List of Arab scientists and scholars

[edit]

Thanks alot for clearing and tiding up that list. I added the info about the format back to the notice section. I hope you don't mind. Its less than a line and a half, and it will help make the list more consistent. Jidan 08:35, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thats very great! It was very professional of you to post an excerpt from his book about jabir bin hayyan. The info is not new to me, but perhaps you should post that in his discussion page and accordingly alter the main article. I think personally you should use your time in creating new articles and expanding them(specially yemeni), rahter then be caught in an ethnic war. Every school kid knows that Geber is an Arab. If its possible and not too much work, can you make a list of all muslim scientist in his book with the same format as this[1] and a short note what their nationalites was and their major contribution?
BTW: Have u read this [2]. Is it true? My answer to him was this [3] Jidan 21:58, 13 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Could you keep an eye on this article? It was just unprotected. AucamanTalk 06:07, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ajam means non-arab and is considered an insult when you say this to a non-arab, although the meanig itself isnt an insult. I have corrected the article. Jidan 06:40, 14 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spanish words of Arabic Origin

[edit]

Thanks for helping me out with this article. Im still quite new to wikipedia and writing it is getting difficult. Perhaps you could help me, as an arab speaker, with the etymologies.

Cheers

--Guzman ramirez 12:05, 23 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Inahet! Well Im slowly getting through the words. Some will be missing I guess but the bulk of them will be there. As for the etymologies, we will have to either write them in the arabic script or in the proper latin-alphabet transcription of arabic. I dont really know the latter. I know that in the internet the 7 the 3 and the 5 are used to represent some letters. I dont think this is the proper way though. Could you give me some guidance on this or ask some fellow muslim/arab wikipedians for help.

Cheers!!--Guzman ramirez 18:17, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Another thing, how do you redirect an article or change its name? thanks!!!--Guzman ramirez 19:21, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Iraq is a British invention, there was no country called Iraq back then, and it would therefore be inaccurate. —Khoikhoi 16:12, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, I'm quite certain that the Iraq was used to refer to that region in that time. You probably mean that the modern country of Iraq was created by the Brits.

Also, I just found out that Iraq even predates Islam: "Beginning in the seventh century AD, Islam spread to what is now Iraq. The prophet Mohammed's cousin and son-in-law moved his capital to Kufa "fi al-Iraq" when he became the fourth caliph. The Umayyads ruling from Damascus in the 7th century ruled the province of Iraq." Taken from Iraq. --Inahet 16:29, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You are wrong Khoikhoi!! All of mesopatamia was called Iraq by the Arabs, even prior to islamic conquest. And during the rule of the arab caliphies, it was adminstrated as the province of Iraq.jidan 16:46, 28 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yemen before the Advent of Islam

[edit]

Yemenis spoke South Arabian/Sabaean in the west and Eastern South Semitic (predecesors of Modern South Arabian languages) in the East (and on Socotra). "Arabia" was a geographic designation (the peninsula), not the language they spoke. Yemen was called "Arabia Felix" during times when we know that they spoke Sabaean, so that designation doesn't mean that they spoke Arabic. The burden of proof is not on me, the evidence shows that they spoke Sabaean (or Eastern South Semitic), which has been recorded in writings since at least the 6th c. BC through the Islamic conquests, whereas Arabic inscriptions have only begun in the 4th & 5th c. AD (and first in Saudi Arabia, not Yemen). The burden of proof is on you.

Inahet, I don't think any of his attacks against me have reached the level of vitriol that would have me running to the admins. arab americans

[edit]

Yesterday, I removed a number of people from the 'Arab American' category because 'Arab' was not mentioned in the content of the articles nor in any external links from the articles. You have re-added at least one of the articles. Fine, but could you see about modfifying the articles to add information about the people's Arab connections, hopefully country of descent. And some of the articles I decategorized seemed clearly out of place. Thanks Hmains

There seems to be a number of editors who are objecting to ethnic articles, categories and lists of all kinds. Best to not leave openings for them to attack. Thanks Hmains 04:10, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mani

[edit]

Perhaps you noticed, while on my page, that Mani has also accused me of making a personal attack, by saying "Zereshk and his friends." I believe that any comment suggesting that there's a group of Iranian editors who support each other is an attack. However, suggesting that Luka and I are in the pay of sinister entities out to destroy Iran is NOT a personal attack.

Isn't Wikipedia FUN? I've really got to start writing fiction again. I could write so many interesting characters :) Zora 06:39, 30 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your compliment, but it still needs a loooot of work. I will add from time to time new info. There is discrepancy and spelling mistake throughout the article. If you have time, then please have a look at it professor Inahet ;-). Jidan 23:22, 1 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ancient yemen userboxes

[edit]

Hi, Great thing with the ancient yemen userbox. I added a second userbox with a different picture.I think the picture I added is better, because its shows the yemeni characterstic thing found nowhere. You can see the ancient sabaean writting. The yemeni face. Tell me what you think about it, so that later we can turn it into a template,i.e. something like {{user yemen_history}}. Jidan 02:30, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have made a page for the templete in my userpage here User:Jidan/templates, so that I stop vandalizing your userpage :). In case you haven't realized, the color of userpages is light blue not white! So white makes a good contrast with blue IMHO. Regarding the templetes, every one makes one, and that text you read is there since the creation of wikipedia!. A templete for History of Yemen is certainly more important than for example this:
This user exercises regularly and drinks a lot of water to stay hydrated.

And regarding the size of the templete, not all templetes have a standard size. Jidan 06:33, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just add this:

{{User Yemen History}}

.

This user is interested in the history of Yemen.
ohh, feel free to change color, picture, or whatever. The page is here: Template:User_Yemen_History. The original code is here: user:Jidan/templates. Jidan 06:57, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, the background of the teplate is not white, but rather light sand-brown. Jidan 07:22, 3 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know why you still haven't created the project yet, but I did it. Its here Wikipedia:WikiProject Yemen. The template for it is this:

I should have done this ages ago. I should be studying, but what the hell. I want to make the basis for this project, and I hope it will encourage the others to contribute to it, even if its one word. Can you do me a big favor? Can you please put this template {{WikiProject_Yemen}} in all yemen-related article talk pages you encounter? and also (more important!) the appropriate yemeni catogry, e.g. yemeni people, Cities in yemen, etc. Thank You. Ohhh, and dont forget the stubs template. Jidan 01:40, 4 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Anti-Arabism

[edit]

Although the poll results that you added to the anti-Arabism article is useful information, it is more pertinent to the Islamphobia article. But, the article is right now protected, so when it becomes unprotected you can add that information to it. --Inahet 22:33, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's probably useful for both (it says "from muslim countries" not "by Muslims"), but I'll try to remember to add it. // Liftarn

Barnstar - Something you should have got long time ago!

I just knew that I can hand out awards! You will give me honor if you accept this:

Inahet is awarded this Barnstar for the tremendous contributions made in regards to Yemen related articles and for dedication of promoting fair and un-biased articles on Wikipedia. Jidan 13:43, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ohhh sorry I forgot, regarding the size of history of yemen template, just go here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jidan/templates, copy the code for the template, go to the template page, and change where it says "50px" to whatever size you want. Jidan 14:37, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, but...

[edit]

Hi Inahet, Thanks for the barnstar, but you shouldn't give me one just because I gave you one. This sentence you wrote is certainly wrong: ...and for always maintaining a cool composure in difficult situations., because I was blocked 3 times becuase of 3RR violations, thats the opposite of "maintaining a cool compusre". Your barnstars will be worthless if you gave them to users that don't deserve them! Thats why I advice you to remove the barnstar from my talk page. Jidan 11:01, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Why should "...and for always maintaining a cool composure in difficult situations." make me feel uncomfortable? LOL. I think you misunderstood what I wrote you. Jidan 12:16, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Arabic and Spanish

[edit]

Perhaps you are right although I do get the definitions and the etymologies from the same source at www.rae.es. The only problem is that there are alot of words. And I think that, so far, I only have found about half of the words of arabic origin.

--Guzman ramirez 17:37, 16 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inahet!

Well, I have as good a source as you can get! The Real Academia de la Lengua Española (www.rae.es) is the official dictionary of the Spanish language. It gives the translation of the arab etymologies in most cases. In the cases in which it doesnt I can only assume that this means that the word has the same meaning in Arabic and in Spanish. Actually there are many more words in Spanish of Arabic origin (some 4000) than of English origin. I dont know where you have read that English is the second biggest influence in the Spanish language. Maybe they were referring to the Spanish spoken in the US. I very much doubt that English is even the third biggest influence on the language. Although it is true that in Latin America there are many more anglicisms than in Spain. In Spain most modern foreign words are borrowed from French.

Thanks for your help with the article. I sometimes feel abit lonely working on it. Its going to take some months to finish it though. Unfortunately there are no good English articles on the subject. Even all lists in Spanish are incomplete so the only solution is reading the dictionary page by page. I think we have over 50% of the words though.

Spanish is the European language (bar Maltese which is really a dialect of Tunisian Arabic) which has most been influenced by Arabic. In fact, Arabisms in other European languages have mostly been take from Spanish. This makes this article all the more interesting.

--Guzman ramirez 10:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I transliterate the Shams words phonetically. Do you know how to put dots under letters ,for the letter Sad for example? --Guzman ramirez 10:38, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for ur help Inahet, I am a bit busy at the moment. Will get back to you soon!--Guzman ramirez 11:56, 19 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok I agree with your format. What is a semi colon is it this ":" or this ";".

Are you sure you can find the definitions for the words? Even I am having trouble with many of them... --Guzman ramirez 09:09, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inahet!

Don't worry about the definitions. Ill take care of it (bit by bit). You need a native Spanish speaker otherwise the task is literally impossible. It seems you are struggling with an English-Spanish Dictionary and I am struggling with an English-Arabic one.:-) All these words exist, some are just very hard to translate. If I cant for some, Ill just explain what they mean.

I need help with the article in every other respect though:-) --Guzman ramirez 23:10, 21 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cool. If you need more help with the etymologies: Try this. Go to www.rae.es. Click on the top lefthand box which says "Diccionario de la Lengua Española". On the page it takes you to, type in the word which you are interested in in the space given, and then click on "consultar". It will immediately give you the definition and arabic etymology.

It is useful even if you dont speak Spanish.

--Guzman ramirez 09:44, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I do have a basic knowledge of Arabic and I tried studying it at one point. I suck though and I have forgotten alot:-) When I write Andalusi Arabic I mean the Andalusi darja of Arabic, which, as all other dialects, can be different to Classical Arabic. I guess when I mention Andalusi Arabic for a particular word it was because the Andalusi etymology was considerably different from classical arabic.

e.g. Carrot: Spanish: Zanahoria, Andalusí Arabic: Safunaria. In other arabic dialects or in Fus7a, this word is not used so a reference to Andalusi Arabic must be made.--Guzman ramirez 20:20, 22 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Yemeni is very close to Hassaniya which is spoken in Western Sahara (as far away from Yemen as you can get). Apparently some centuries ago Yemeni tribes moved into the area.

I think I have not managed to explain myself. I was trying to say that Arabic spoken in Spain, as in Yemen, had its own dialect. The name of this dialect is called Andalusi Arabic, and it is quite different from classical. Many words in Andalusi Arabic do not have Arabic roots. The same is the case for Morrocan Arabic which is largely berber.

--Guzman ramirez 09:18, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Etymology of Albatross:

Arabic qatras arrogant walk ---- Spanish Alcatraz a small seabird called Gannet in English ----- English Albatross Big sea bird (corruption from Alcatraz) ------ Spanish Albatros Same meaning as English.

complicated eh?:-) Albatross is a word taken from Spanish corrupted and sent back to Spanish meaning something else.--Guzman ramirez 13:55, 23 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

no the word is of arabic origin and should remain in the english list. but in the spanish list there is no point since alcatraz is already there.

Hi Inahet... Sorry I havent done much on the page over the last couple of days...been very busy. Will resume tommorrow hopefully. One thing, you may be wondering what a bishop has to do with an elephant (from Alfil). In Spanish we call the bishop in chess alfil. In Arabic chessboards, that same peice (which moves diagonally) is not a bishop but an elephant. Another word you may like: Marrano means pig/pork in Spanish. It comes from Arabic "Moharram" which, as you know, means forbidden. --Guzman ramirez 10:05, 26 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hehehe you are going to know quite a bit of Spanish by the time we are done...--Guzman ramirez 09:19, 1 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yes thats common to all latin languages including French, Italian, Portuguese and Romanian. So are gendered nouns. Arabic shares these traits with this group of languages. Although arabic only has one type of definite article "el" where as Spanish has the masculin "el" and the feminine "la".

For example: "La casa roja" (the red house) and "el coche rojo" (the red car).

The letter J in Spanish is pronounce Kh as in Khaled. The letter H is silent. And both the letters B and V are pronounced as B. Double l (LL) is prounounced as Ya as in yom.

The arabic sound "sh" (which is extremely rare in Spanish) has invariable been converted into J (or kh), with few exceptions. For example, Shaqiqa has become Jaqueca, pronounced Khakeka. The only exception I can think of is the region of Axarquía in southern Spain, where the sh sound (represented by the letter x) has been mantained and thus the original arabic pronounciation.

One characteristic which is unique to Spanish is that we have 2 verbs "to be": Ser and estar. Ser describes the thing or person in itself whereas estar describes its present condition. Foreigners have ALOT of trouble working out which one of these verbs to use when learning the language.

--Guzman ramirez 12:49, 3 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually I have often wondered about that very issue (the article), I guess it is from Latin as Hraefen says...--Guzman ramirez 22:20, 4 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

This is very interesting. I have never found a source which supports the arabic root of usted. It was my own speculation. All Spanish sources I know simply claim it comes from vuestra merced. What is the name of this book? Perhaps a new section should be made for controversial etimologies... --Guzman ramirez 21:35, 5 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well Usted is a pronoun and it means "you" but in the formal/respectful sense. I think in Arabic "antum" is used in the same way.

ex. Usted tiene razón. = you (respectful) are right.

Anyways the article basically says that Usted comes from Arabic Ustadh but is also influenced by old term "Vuestra Merced" which is Romance. It kind of goes both ways without giving preference to either explanation...

In my opinion Usted and Ustadh are too similar both in meaning and phonetically for there not to be a connexion between the two.

Also, Inahet we must also remember that many words passed from European languages to arabic (such as those you included in the talk page). Btw what is Yemeni arabic like? Is it very different from Syrian or Lebanese? Can you understand someone from Somalia?

Im also constantly putting off writing an introductory section with other arabic influences apart from vocabulary... Im still quite busy until august:-(.

--Guzman ramirez 08:44, 6 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Inahet!

Got User:Garcilaso who is also Spanish to give us a hand with the article. Im still drowning in work. You seen whats happening in Beirut? Have a couple of very close friends who are stuck there. Were visiting family... Real bad luck. --Guzman ramirez 18:39, 14 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Inahet you have found a new word of arabic origin in the most random way. Babel fish could not translate "Ben Abdala" (Ibn Abdala) because, for some reason, it could not recognize the word "ben" as part of the Arabic name. Apparently the word "ben" exists in Spanish (I didnt know) because it translated it into "Horseradish tree". I looked this word up on the RAE and it exists and is also of Arabic origin... Apparently its a tropical tree of some kind... --Guzman ramirez 09:25, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Whats up Inahet?

Ar. Hisp is Arabe Hispanico or Hispanic Arabic. It basically means : Andalusi Arabic. How you enjoying your summer? Im in France right now...

What the hell is going on? I'm gone for one day, and all hell broke loose?

Yeah. That’s why Wikipedia’s a full-time job, and they’re not paying me enough.

Wiki Wikardo, your comments are abusive and counterproductive.

Unproductive, I’ll grant, but “counterproductive” I find arguable. It’s become clear that there cannot be a discussion about the logistical and linguistic merits of including the Arabic abjad without persistant accusations of bias, language being integrally tied to political identity as it is. Screwing up the talk page certainly doesn’t help, but at this point I’m doubtful it hurts. Loss of faith 01:41, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

POV

[edit]

Thanks for making me aware of the POV in the Israel-lebanon article, ill do the best i can. --Doge120 02:55, 6 August 2006 (UTC) It looks like not enough is said in the article about life in Lebanon under Israel's bombs. The article dosent seem to provde any information at all and "laundry lists" what is attacked in Lebanon. AND the POV part is that everything Israel does always looks as if it is a "response" from something Lebanon did. The article lacks information and more words and facts.--Doge120 03:44, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I am reading Targeting of civilian areas in the 2006 Israel-Lebanon conflict and it is very POV. They keep justying Israel's reactions in Lebanon by getting quotes from that terrorist olmert and other Israelis. Very unacceptbale. --Doge120 23:06, 6 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I wonder if you wouldn't mind taking a look at the article above, and expanding it further, or adding any sources appropriate for our English Wikipedia. I've already built it from a one-sentence stub using the sum total of my knowledge on the subject. Specifically, someone raised questions about the etymology of Semitic definite articles that I just couldn't answer. So I'm trying to recruit other Wikipedians with Arabic/linguistic expertise, such as yourself. Thanks very much! -Fsotrain09 23:14, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
