[edit]Hi, Innotata, do you have any suggestions for a next date or place for a Minnesota meetup? I was disappointed to miss last Sunday's meetup once a work meeting coincided with the time announced for the meetup. I would be happy to arrange a meetup soon. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 14:13, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- No; I won't go to any I can't bike to; there was some mention of more frequent meetups in the Cities, but otherwise no interest. —innotata 14:17, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Thanks for the reply. I've been doing a lot more biking this year than for the last twenty years, and I'll keep bike access in mind as suggestions come up. -- WeijiBaikeBianji (talk, how I edit) 15:02, 3 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Beetles, bugs, it's all the same to me. ;) Thanks for cleaning up! Drmies (talk) 01:41, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- A pleasure, especially adding the photo.
- I always get a laugh out of Calvin and Hobbes, and this is no exception. I probably know much less than Ucucha about insects; I just haven't got any capitalised games to see for a while. —innotata 02:37, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Bugs doesn't really mean anything, but with the pearl of wisdom that Corthylus columbianus is in Kingdom Animalia (and the photo, now), you'd be forgiven for thinking the thing is a bug. Anyhow: surprising the article didn't exist before; and here are some images as with Ucucha's page. —innotata 03:19, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Hmm, you learn something on Wikipedia every day. Well, I do anyway. But as far as I am concerned every insect is a bug, and so is our new dog. Bugs don't mean anything? You clearly don't live in the Deep South. Come around for summer and I'll show you very meaningful bugs, in the two- to three-inch category. I like to joke to my students that they need professional clear plastic binders--but they don't even know C & H anymore. It's a sad and beautiful world! Take it easy, Drmies (talk) 04:40, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- By the way, I was going to write Corthylus as a conciliatory gesture toward you, Ucucha, and all your science friends, but I gave up when I realized I didn't know what the difference was between genus and subfamily. Mucho difficult for an English major. Drmies (talk) 04:42, 21 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Innovate,
I volunteer to help a group of ornithologists in Armenia with bringing information to the web. The group produced a well known field guide to the 300 plus birds of Armenia.
We are trying to add this as a reference to each wikipedia bird page and have converted all the bird data and plates to web format and do not charge any money.
We understand birding and ornithology and conservation but not wikipedia and it's anti spam endeavors.
Is there a way you can suggest we build consensus or explain the addition of this reference so people can have access to this? The field guide really is a superb reference and can help provide scientifically gathered data on all these birds.
Any help would be appreciated.

- If you're the same person as Boajeff, please use one account: see Wikipedia:Sockpuppetry. I think references or links to the Acopian Center for the Environment or the field guide should be given here and there where useful, not indiscriminately added to every bird found in Armenia. [1] I replaced the image because the one I replaced it with has a much higher resolution and ducklings are in focus. I very much doubt you could come up with any good explanations why low resolution and low quality image illustrates the article better. your edit summary was made in a bad faith. please stop.--Mbz1 (talk) 16:32, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I think the purpose of the infobox illustration for Anas should be to illustrate the typical body and plumage of Anas species, which the old image did better, with the adult taking up more of the image. The old one is a featured image here; though the one you added is a new quality image. Certainly, yours is not significantly better than the old image, so it is odd to replace it like that. In any case, I think neither really is ideal for the infobox (though both would be good in the body), and I was about to see if there are any better featured or quality images. —innotata 16:41, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- Now that I've been thinking about it, I actually think your image simply would not do: as I noted, the adult is not framed (I think that's how it's put) suitably for the infobox. Using an image like File:Female Chestnut Teal duck.jpg is probably best (though maybe no tthis particular one), for what it shows (and since mallards are not exactly typical Anas). —innotata 16:56, 27 November 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]I was wondering why you think this is PD in the United States. SlimVirgin talk|contribs 05:59, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- It isn't PD, but I think the Bundesarchive release makes it free use in the United States. —innotata 15:30, 2 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Hello! I'm The Arbiter, one of the coordinators for WikiProject Zoo. I am proud to announce the launch of a new portal: Portal:Zoos and Aquariums! ZooPro, ZooFari, and I worked hard to create a new portal for information on zoos, aquariums, and the associated projects and articles on Wikipedia. If you could head on over, take a look at our work, and maybe learn some more about zoos and Wikiproject Zoo, it would be great! Cheers and Happy Editing!

I dispute the stsatus of this pic seems clear to me, I don't see its status as a speedy, can you please send it for discussion, thanks. Off2riorob (talk) 22:42, 18 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]
- I should bring it to discussion. Previously the explanatory text of the permission section made it appear to be eligible for speedy deletion. Now, I don't know what the true story on copyright in the Maldives is, and there is no evidence yet that the file was published before 2010. —innotata 15:23, 20 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]User:ZooPro has suggested that I request your feedback and/or modifications to this proposal. If you think that it has worth, I would like to post an RfC, notify relevant groups, then announce it at Wikipedia:WikiProject Manual of Style. If this is unlikely to be helpful or achieve anything, please be frank. I won't be offended.

At WikiProject Amphibians and Reptiles, in which you are listed as a member, we're working on a pretty massive backlog (1000+ articles!) of unassessed articles. We would appreciate it greatly if you would help assess the articles in the link. It's simple to do!
- Read over the article.
- On the discussion page, look for the {{AARTalk}} template. Add in a "class" and "importance" parameter if the template does not have them already. Example: {{AARTalk|class= |importance= }}
- For the class, fill in the article's quality using the WikiProject's quality scale: stub, start, C, B, GA, A, or FA. Most unassessed articles will probably be stubs or start class articles, and definitely B or lower.
- For the importance, fill in the article's importance to the WikiProject using the importance scale: low, mid, high, or top. Most unassessed articles will probably be low or mid importance.
- Then you're done!
It's not a difficult task, but there's a lot to get done. Our hope is that we can chip through the backlog and assess every article within the auspices of the project. Thanks, bibliomaniac15 00:31, 12 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hello WP:TURTLE member, the project needs your help. We have recently created a portal (Portal:Turtles), and would like you to choose two or three captivating turtle images for its "Selected picture" section. These images must to be chosen from commons and have a small (three sentences or so) paragraph describing the species in the picture. When you have several that you like, please place the images and a possible caption on the portal's talk page (Portal talk:Turtles). Thank you so much project member!--NYMFan69-86 (talk) 16:07, 18 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Why are you updating the American University of Armenian page. are you connected, have you been connected.

We are doing a little push to get 10GAs by 01APR. How about pounding one out? There are several "plum" turtle articles available that have notability and sources (and even hits) available. You could pound one out and then see if it was something to stay involved with or not. But best way to see if it's any fun is to give it a try.
TCO (talk) 05:25, 23 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Not now, sorry. I probably won't get time to work substantially on articles for a while, and I have a lot of articles I'd like to finish improving before I move on to new ones. —innotata 17:12, 24 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, I've put the citation you requested on the Nicolls page - is the reference to the letters page of The Times enough in itself, or do you think it requires more of a quote? The opening paragraph of Nicolls's letter, before he mentions his time on Fernando Po, is the bit where he says he is writing because of the Creole case: ‘The Creole : To the Editor of The Times : Sir – In reading the comments made in your journal on the 1st Instant, relative to the seizure of the brig Creole by the slaves confined on board, it has occurred to me, that having had several almost similar affairs to manage...if you think the manner in which I managed those matters can be of any consequence to the cause of the long and cruelly-oppressed Africans, the annexed description is at your service.’ Then follows his account of his actions relative to escaped Africans landing on Fernando Po.RLamb (talk) 22:34, 28 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- It probably is good enough, and I put it there expecting you'd confirm he said it, though of course something secondary, if it exists, would be better. —innotata 02:21, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- I'll have to leave it as is then. I don't know of any other sources on this. There is some reference in The Times to a running quarrel in the columns of other newspapers between Nicolls and a man named John Hughes, who'd complained that the behaviour and dress of British naval officers off the African coast left much to be desired. Nicolls resented these allegations strongly and was not shy of saying so: Hughes counter-accused him of factual inaccuracy, semi-senility and monstrous egotism. (Egotistical? Nicolls?? Surely some mistake:) )RLamb (talk) 13:53, 29 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
