Re: li value

I can answer that. Thanks for your curiosity. Well, I did the li value thing for the track listing and how the numbering is distributed in front of each track. Below displays how the track listing was before.

Side one

  1. "Computer God" – 6:10
  2. "After All (The Dead)" – 5:37
  3. "TV Crimes" – 3:58
  4. "Letters From Earth" – 4:12
  5. "Master Of Insanity" – 5:54

Side two

  1. "Time Machine" – 4:10
  2. "Sins Of The Father" – 4:43
  3. "Too Late" – 6:54
  4. "I" – 5:10
  5. "Buried Alive" – 4:47

Notice how the track listing goes like this: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5. Now, with the addition of the li value code, I made the track listing appear like so:

Side one

  1. "Computer God" – 6:10
  2. "After All (The Dead)" – 5:37
  3. "TV Crimes" – 3:58
  4. "Letters From Earth" – 4:12
  5. "Master Of Insanity" – 5:54

Side two

  1. "Time Machine" – 4:10
  2. "Sins Of The Father" – 4:43
  3. "Too Late" – 6:54
  4. "I" – 5:10
  5. "Buried Alive" – 4:47

Notice how the track listing's numerals are 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. That's what the li value did. So, if you want to put down a different number for a track listing or any other listing, without having the default labeling of 1, 2, 3, etc. then use this code: #<li value = desired number>.

There are various other codes involving the li code, but that is the one I prefer to use. Thanks for your curiosity, once again.

Track numbers

About your recent edits adding the "li value" tag to Grateful Dead album articles, I was really thinking that the track numbers in the article should correspond to the actual CD track numbers. They do that when you add the tag to single CDs that were originally released as LPs, like this, but not when you add the tag to have track numbers cross discs, like this. In other words, I really think it's better not to have track numbers span multiple discs. (If you reply here, I will see what you say.) — Mudwater (Talk) 15:29, 1 March 2009 (UTC)

I'm looking at the guidelines at Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums#Track listing. It's a bit ambiguous but I think they're saying the same thing: "If the album was released primarily on CD and spans multiple discs, these should be listed separately under sub-headings named 'Disc one', 'Disc two' and so on." Also if you look at other album articles about albums that have more than one disc, you'll find that the track numbers pretty consistently start over with each disc, to correspond to the CD track numbers. Edit to Black Sabbath

Heya. In this edit [1] you changed "Ozzy" to "Osbourne". Normally I'd agree in that the latter is far more encyclopedic-sounding, but it was in a direct quote; and I suspect the quoted person actually did say "Ozzy". Oh I totally agree. It's endlessly frustrating to always look at my watchlist and see more damn IP edits ignoring the guidelines :/ And even when you explain the guidelines to them they just ignore them. I've seen stats quoted about IP users mostly making useful contributions, but I refuse to believe that. The fact is that the majority of IP edits are disruptive, and the majority of disruptive edits are from IP users. It just causes trouble and lets people treat wikipedia like their own personal website rather than a community. Prophaniti (talk) 11:19, 17 March 2009 (UTC)
It's an unfortunate problem in wikipedia, dealing with IP users. You can't explain things to them, because they just tend to ignore it; you can't revert them, because then you get blocked for "edit warring"; and you can't inform admins of it because they usually just say "It's just an IP user" or some such. Protocol for edits (re "Smoke on the Water")

In the "Smoke on the Water" article, you completely reversed an edit by IP 74.59.161.59 on 2009 March 27. I partially reversed your reversal. I can see where the edit needed correction as verbose (in that left/right panning issues are superfluous, not part of composition), but recognizing the introduction of distorted organ along with the hi-hat was a valid correction in my opinion.

I add this note not to argue these issues, but to comment on two things that I thought were wrong with your edit.

1) The edit was flagged as "minor". I see the change as material to the meaning, and in no way superficial. Reviewing the article on what is considered a minor edit in Wikipedia, I see this as an error.

2) Your description ("unreference change to accepted section") was incomprehensible to me; even looking at the history of the article, I still contort to apply it. Does it mean that the edit reverses a change to an "accepted" (i.e. what? long lasting without debate or change?) section because the change was made without reference to any authority?

I must say, Wikipedia is a momentous project. It'll be interesting to see if we can manage to agree with each other, at least concerning the meaning of things. Cheers.

RE edits to Ronnie James Dio discography

The certification I listed was in the UK. RIAA = Recording Industry Association of America. The British website is www.bpi.co.uk, that is where these things should be checked. I sourced my facts from Black Sabbath discography which cited having checked the BPI website.

You HAVE however alerted me to a discrepancy there; the BPI website does not list the certifications listed on the Sabbath discography page. As you've taken an interest, any ideas what I should do? I think the BPI website must be wrong, the sales figures it gives don't sound at all right to me though it's never failed me before since it's an official record:

  • We Sold Our Soul for Rock And Roll - Silver
  • Sabbath Bloody Sabbath - Silver
  • Sabotage - Silver
  • Heaven & Hell - Gold
  • Mob Rules - Silver
  • The Collection - Gold
  • The Best of Black Sabbath - Gold

There's no way in hell that Heaven & Hell is their best selling album in the UK and no way that the best selling Ozzy era albums are SBS and Sabotage. It appears the official source is wrong. Advice? (The Elfoid (talk) 14:37, 30 March 2009 (UTC))

Roma/Romani disambig

Hi! I saw that you've made some clean-up in various Roma/Romani articles. I have to ask to be more cautious because Roma is used with a double meaning: once as a name for all Romani people, and once as a proper name for the Roma - roughly the Romanies from Eastern Europe. So, when the article (or the section) talks strictly about the Roma, you can disambiguate to "Roma (Romani subgroup)", but when it talks about other Romani groups, or, generally about the Romani people, then you disambiguate to "Romani people". Watchlists

I would like to see the feature described in Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Articles_on_no_watchlists implemented. I made an identical suggestion at Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Watched_counter and it's pretty far along. I don't feel encouraged about actually getting anything done on that proposals page, given that what seems like a well-discussed, advanced, and solid variant of your proposal has been slowly dying for a couple weeks. The problem might just be that it's not at the bottom of the page, or has too much text to read through. Thoughts? –MT 03:16, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

If not much happens with yours, I think I might end up waiting a couple of weeks, and then re-proposing with a clearer and shorter outline. The thing is, even if the bored kid (nevermind having a registered account - just an ip) edited a bunch of "unwatched" articles, those vandal edits would end up smack at the top of the very slow-moving "recent unwatched changes" page. Link changes

Hi J04n! I have noticed that you have been changing a lot of links in a clearly good-faith attempt to avoid disambiguation pages and such. However, some not-so-good edit fall through the cracks. For example, here you replaced a relevant disambiguation link with an irrelevant one. I have seen a few more examples but mostly decided to ignore them at this point (didn't have much time). Hi again! I have indeed noticed that you were not just mindlessly changing the links, but actually thinking about the context. However, it's not always correct or relevant. For example, linking to Palestine when the text says Palestinian is not helpful, because of the many definitions that both terms have. At least the term Palestinian gives the reader a general direction (and who doesn't know what a Palestinian is?), which Palestine brings them to an article about a vague geopolitical region which usually has nothing to do with what is said in the original article. Levaquin article

Appreciate your interest in the Levaquin article, but unfortunately I had to remove your recent edit. You had provided a link from "side effects" to an article about adverse reactions. There is a definate distinction to be made between the two. A side effect is NOT the one and the same as an adverse reaction. A side effect is something that takes place WHILE you are taking a drug and abates once the drug is discontinued, or shortly there after. Whereas an adverse event is the damage done to your body as a result of being on the medication and an adverse event does not abate when you discontinue the medication. The damage has already been done. And at times such reactions result in permanent injury, disability, or even death. A side effect is a minor annoyance in comparision to an adverse reaction which is a serious medical complication that requires immedate intervention to prevent further harm to the patient. Comparing apples to oranges as they say.

Ooops – I might have spoken first and thought second. From Rod Beckstrom's background, I assumed that his law was 99% about Computer networks (and indeed, his paper starts with an example using the Internet), but when I went to "fix" the dab I noticed that it claims to cover more general networks. When checking, I can't find another dab problem but I did find that you have used Computer networks in at least one case, so sorry – my mistake and I have not changed anything. Dab epoch

I think this edit [3] was a mistake. You linked to Epoch (reference date) which is a point in time, quite different from the meaning of 'epoch' as an interval of time in geology. In this case, in fact the relevant article is already linked to as Series (stratigraphy) so the most appropriate action IMHO is to remove the link altogether.   • I've actually seen your edits somewhere, though I can't remember where, and I remember thinking they were reasonable :) . I've been on wikipedia for a number of years, and have generally been ok with it, though recently I have been noticing that I simply don't have the energy to battle it out with some of the more abrasive bullies (I believe I use the term accurately) on some of the music pages. I do try, every now and then, but they won't even really discuss it on the talk page - I have many questions left unanswered by people who just don't want to bother and hope I'll go away (and I do because there are places I can improve on here where it won't be as problematic). Just my rambling. I was curious about the SotW page, but it's probably not worth watching since nothing interesting is going to change on it :) Luminifer (talk) 03:56, 5 August 2009 (UTC)

I was wondering why you chose Powerlifting instead of Olympic weightlifting, since this woman appears to be an Olympic athlete. Cool-down blocks

I think you've misunderstood the section on WP:CDB which you've used to make your answer. A "cool down block" for someone who is angry about a content dispute but is not generally a vandal is not the same thing as a preventative block on someone who just wants to cause problems. However, it's a matter of terminology only: a block is a block, so I can see your case for your answer being correct. It happens that this question is used as a trick question on many RfA's and people will oppose over any answer other than "never". -- Soap Talk/Contributions 01:47, 7 September 2009 (UTC)

Not many people would agree with me that it's a trick question. My saying so is primarily because the question doesn't define what a cool-down block is, and the term isn't all that widely used outside of RfA, which means the question is really a test of whether you've been reading up on the various policy pages in preparation for an RfA, rather than a test of your ability to respond appropriately in a real situation. I would rather the question be replaced with a description of a situation and a "what would you do here?" at the end. Hi; you're the first to leave me a message! It's always nice to be noticed, and oops, I should have been consistent by using last names, but I was mostly reacting to the "M.A.R.F." reference. (Very sad that I'm your age, 42, and I'm watching - and paying attention to - Nickelodeon cartoons!) Since you seem to know Kiss pretty well, I just left a message on the discussion page about the "Killers" album/LP/compilation/whatever it really is. I'm sitting here listening to all the Kiss albums I can get my hands on, and reading the biography, in preparation for seeing Kiss in October (haven't seen them before) -- and "Killers" is mentioned, but I can't find much information about it. In short, I was wondering whether the fact that 4 new songs seemed to have been released as part of the album would warrant its mention in the text of the article (or whether it should just stay hidden in the discography).

BTW, I have been looking at the Judas Priest main article; nobody has responded to a message on that discussion page (I think I posted about 3 weeks ago) regarding a now-completed 2008 tour. The dates and locations (and even the days of the week) of the concerts are listed in what I think is nauseating (and confusing) detail, and until I edited it in a minor fashion, the whole section was still in future tense. Changing it to past tense only helped a little but I am VERY leery of starting to delete the details unless I can get someone more experienced than I to look at it and help decide whether the details were only relevant when the concerts were truly in the future! Perhaps you could take a look (see the section on "Nostradamus" and the 2008-2009 tour).

REGARDING THE DELETION OF THE "ALVIN FIELDS WIKI PAGE

I I'm not at all impressed with the condescending and deletion of the Alvin Fields wiki page. The suggestion that he appears to be no more than a lounge singer is more than inaccurate. Alvin is an extremely talented individual. However his explanation of fame is that in the world of show biz, Fame is a booby prize for being good at what you do. In his case, that would be excellence in music. Alvin's career started at a very young age and he did not take it seriously until he began to hang out with Jean Michelle Basquiat the late painter.("A Quick Killing In Art" by Phoebe Hoban Page 24, Paragraph 5), Alvin is mentioned as Jeans roommate) Alvin started as street musician and Jean Michelle would collect money for him from the crowds that would gather to hear him play the guitar and sing. Repairing links to disambiguation pages

Please be careful with making rapid fire edits to remove links to disambig pages. If you end up sending the user to the wrong page, that's worse then sending them to a disambig page. If you don't have time to read the article and be sure you understand the context, I think it would be better to put a note on the talk page, asking those who know the topic to correct it. Thanks for the note and I'm sorry I wasn't more specific. The efficiency ones were what I noted. I redid three--Malone engine, Work output, and Rural society in China. I'm not sure I did the latter right, but I think it is better than it was. It might actually be best to send it back to the disambig page and let someone who knows the topic better than either of us fix it. I'm not convinced that a dictionary page is better than a disambig page--it still lists multiple meanings, and the user has to pick between them. And then the problem is buried, rather than fixed. I suspect there are a bunch more that are like Malone engine where it's the physics meaning rather than efficient energy use.
But my point is not that I'm going to check all your work and tell you specific things that need to be changed. My point is to encourage you to be a little more careful because pointing the user in the wrong direction is a lot worse than giving him a map. Quality, while hard to track, is hugely more important than making progress on an automatically generated list of potential problems, especially when the "fix" drops it off the list of things that need attention. It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:

  • Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
  • Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
  • Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
  • Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
  • Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
  • Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
  • Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
  • In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.

The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!

Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup.
