GAR notification

I have started a good article reassessment for Kiss (band), an article that you are one of the top contributors to. You can see my concerns listed at Talk:Kiss (band)/GA1. Cheers, Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 18:04, 2 January 2010 (UTC)

Why do you keep removing the allmusic reviews of the first few black sabbath albums? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.251.236.173 (talk) 19:44, 9 January 2010 (UTC)

nah, that's no problem. i actually didn't see that it said "professional" reviews. and yep, rate your music is not professional and allmusic obviously is. no hard feelings whatsoever man. you're doing a good job —Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.251.236.173 (talk) 12:18, 12 January 2010 (UTC)

Album articles assessing

Hi.

I noticed you assessed like 50 albums in the last couple of days and there is a couple of suggestions a would like to make:

1.- Please not only assess the articles but also place the stub template in the article.

2.- If possible make a search for info in the article, (Allmusic will do most of the time) and add the info you find, like personnel section, authorship and/or track lengths. I know is a pain but it could help the project way more. Thanks. Zidane tribal (talk) 03:07, 14 January 2010 (UTC)

Also, please remember that unreleased albums shouldn`t receive stub rating but future rating. Thanks. Zidane tribal (talk) 03:20, 17 January 2010 (UTC)

The article Wicked Lester you nominated as a good article has been placed on hold . The article is close to meeting the good article criteria, but there are some minor changes or clarifications needed to be addressed. If these are fixed within seven days, the article will pass, otherwise it will fail. See Talk:Wicked Lester for things which need to be addressed. Cannibaloki 00:06, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Lets roll

lets roll. I will start. First thing to do is to create the wikiproject subpage and category, I will do this now. I suppose the next step is to alert the music wikiproject community on their talk page. Would you like to write up a explanation?

If you are not up to this, find out all of the categories which music has, by visiting music pages at WP:Unreferenced BFPs and start compiling them on User:J04n/music.

I can't see you on gmail chat. Maybe you can figure out how that works and how to chat together.

Let me know what you think, what you would like to do, etc.

I would be seriously surprised if we don't receive backlash tonight. Focus on our work, and don't let editors try to distract you, because they will sure try. Ikip Frank Andersson (45 revisions restored):an olympic medallist for f**k's sake 03:09, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

Rollback

Hi J04n, I noticed you doing some vandalfighting, would you be interested in rollback? If so have a read of wp:rollback and tell me when you would and wouldn't use it. ϢereSpielChequers 00:29, 31 January 2010 (UTC)

Thank you for noticing my work and asking my interest in rollback. I I had the tool I would use it against obvious vandalism and only when the vandalism was the most recent edit on the page and the vandal the most recent contributer. If I believe something is vandalism (but not 100% sure) I would not use rollback, I would revert and leave a detailed edit summary. Mass rollbacks can also be done, in an instance when all edits in a contributers visible history need to be undone, I would be hesitant to use this feature because I would fear that I would be undoing a constructive edit that was done after one of the intended reverted edits was made. Thanks again and happy editing J04n(talk page) 03:23, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Done. Yes its for vandalism by others, though you can also use it to revert yourself. By the way if you ever fancy running for admin again I'd be happy to nominate you, I think you'd make a good admin and have the tenure, temperament and contributions to not only to meet my RFA standards, but perhaps more importantly to meet the rather stricter standards required by the RFA crowd. PS. Nice work on referencing those BLPs. ϢereSpielChequers 09:47, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
Thank you times three. I'll try to make good use of rollback, vandalism fighting isn't my primary interest but I do keep an eye on a number of pages that get vandalized regularly so it will come in handy. If you think that I'm ready for another round at RfA I would appreciate your nomination. I feel much more prepared than I was last go around. It would also make some of the stuff I'm doing a lot easier if I could see deleted pages. Take care J04n(talk page) 12:27, 31 January 2010 (UTC)
OK I've started Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/J04n 2, so you can start answering questions 1-3. But don't transclude it yet as I want to expand on the nomination statement. ϢereSpielChequers 00:59, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter

We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Isle of Man Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.

Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Hello, J04n. You have new messages at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Unreferenced_Biographies_of_Living_Persons/Contest#suggestions:.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Thanks for the message. I already have the toolbar enabled (the old one, not the new one, because the new one disables colorization of the text field at edit), but I can't find the reference button. At the time of the edit, I had ~200 windows open, so alt text was taking about 15 seconds to show up. However there have been other instances where I have been unable to find the button. The link you gave me is for the new toolbar, which for some reason deletes the old toolbar as well as the colorization. Can you just tell me what the button looks like on the old toolbar, if you know. Thanks.                      ~Rayvn  11:06, 16 February 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by RayvnEQ (talkcontribs)

That button must be on the NEW toolbar, because the old toolbar has no button that looks like that. I can infer the basic coding from that button but reference areas in the text editor are generally pretty complicated. But thanks for trying to help me anyway.                     ~Rayvn  15:27, 16 February 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by RayvnEQ (talkcontribs)
Please see: Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Biographies_of_living_people#Part_1_Disagree

As other editors have pointed out, there has been several intentional moves in this request for comment:

  1. Arguing that change is inevitable. As anyone who has tried to change policy here knows, change is never inevitable.
  2. In closing Phase I, only one position is advocated, marginalizing or ignoring all other positions.
  3. Repeated attempts to silence editors, particularly me. See Wikipedia:Arbitration/Requests#Ikip and Wikipedia:An#Page_ban_for_Ikip_from_the_BLP_RFC
  4. Attrition, having the argument drag out so long, and editors get so tired of the discussion, that editors will either:
  1. drop out of the discussion, or
  2. accept a proposal which if originally proposed, would get wide spread opposition.

The end result is that editors who support radical, disruptive change, control the conversation, and less involved editors think that they only have a narrow list of choices, and !vote to accept bitey proposals which will only further hurt wikipedia growth and bite newcomers. Compromise means that both sides give up something.

I would possibly support this proposal if it includes strong WP:BEFORE language, to help protect new editors contributions, as the Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Biographies of living people#WP:BEFORE proposal, which has 19 supports, advocates.

I would strongly encourage you to reconsider your position Okip 12:50, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

J04n, I agree, we have to comprise, but is this really a comprimise? Ask yourself that. This "comprimise" is exactly what these same editors have stubbornly and in some cases disruptively pushed for all along. See #4 attrition. I understand editors wanting comprimise, but some of these editors advocating comprimise only want comprimise on their terms. It is okay to change your mind based on further consideration, it is okay to oppose something you feel will be bitey and will hurt wikipedia retention. Okip 13:02, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
See also Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_comment/Biographies_of_living_people#Consensus_is_forming:_an_alternative_view_and_table_summary_of_all_positions Which completely supports the idea that this is a false consensus. Okip 14:20, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
I would like to note that an editor accused me of canvassing by writing the above, which I simply don't understand.[2] Here is my response.[3] Okip 17:13, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
Of course! Everyone would like to see unreferenced articles referenced! I want all of these articles referenced too!
The question is whether it should be done in a negative and forceful way, as is being proposed, or in a positive way which has shown to work, for example User:DASHBot. Okip 17:39, 20 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. Sorry, I won't be competing. I only do about one a day, just enough to contribute to the effort. But I hope it goes well; it's a neat idea. Maurreen (talk) 06:20, 23 February 2010 (UTC)

Term Limits for Admins

Are you still interested in term limits for Admins?Malke2010 08:05, 24 February 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking of something like Congress where it's two years and they have to run again. They have to earn it. It seems to me, just being on Wikipedia since last July, that admins in general seem reasonable, but I've seen a few whose behavior is clearly not admin-like, yet nothing happens to them. There's really no recourse for an editor, and what editor wants to stick his head up? But with term limits, the admins would have to be accountable.
Two years is a good long time to be accumulating a record the community could look at. The basic idea is to prevent admins from abusing their power.Malke2010 16:42, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
  • The subject seems worthy of entertaining Mlpearc (talk) 17:45, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
There are logistic issues that should be hammered out before proposing it, mostly dealing with current admins. What would you suggest for admins that already have >2 years of service? There is currently an RfC on community de-adminship going on and I did see a few posts stating that finite terms would solve a lot of the problems so there would be support. I would suggest putting something together within your userspace trying to hammer out the technicalities before making any kind of formal proposal plus the result of the community de-adminship might make this a null point. I was last brought up recently here, received a lot of comments and went nowhere. J04n(talk page) 18:25, 24 February 2010 (UTC)
As regards admins who've been onboard for > 2 years, it would be a simple matter of making their next anniversary date of getting their adminship, the end of their term. And then they have to run again. I'm not sure I'm for de-adminship as much as I'm for term limits. You see if somebody is not playing fair and gaming things, then that will come out. Editors who have experiences with admins in that regard will speak up or at least one hopes they will.Malke2010 02:11, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 February newsletter

Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Hungary Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.

Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Hi j04n, and thanks for your contribs to WP:CONTEST. I'd like to ask you, would one ref for a stb like Cristian Cigan count as refimprove of FullSourced? I'm tristing that you will give an honest answer, no showing the fact that you are also a contestant.

Sorry to continue the discussion, but for moviemakers, like Irwin Daayán, do we have to ref every movie or just the begining "He was born in yadda yadda" stuff? I'd like to move that one up to full source if you only have to source the birth and death.

A WikiProject Albums Barnstar to a VANDAL?

I find it awkward, worse yet, ghastly and sickening, what you have done: to reward an individual (user:Aspects), who with dubious motivations and a background of very dubious "contributions", is dedicated to the systematic destruction of images in this encyclopedia, images that contributed to the value of articles, that took time and work of several dozens of true contributors to duly upload. He is an hypocrite, who uses bogus "justifications" when harming articles which others have created, while he shrewdly remains silent about images having the same characteristics but which happen to adorn his pet articles.

What he does is to delete the specification of an image in an article, then proceeds to tag the image file as being "an orphan", leaving it defenceless against bots and admins looking for orphaned files to delete; and finally he has the nerve to notify the image uploader that "the image has been orphaned and will be deleted", but voila! User:Aspects is the orphaner. He is completely heedless of the fact that the image may have a legitimate written, policy-compliant justification for non-free use. In this way he has succeeded --so far-- in destroying hundreds of images. This is not only irritating, it is revolting!

This whole matter is not only hard to understand, it is astonishing, this accompliceship of yours (and of some others), supporting this vandal who ought to be expelled permanently from Wikipedia! A destroyer (a fact that he is evidently proud of!) is hailed, while valuable editors, genuine contributors, are ignored and/or discouraged. This is disgraceful, immoral. Where are you leading Wikipedia to? --AVM (talk) 12:04, 2 March 2010 (UTC)

Just a statement

  • I just feel the need to make a statement as to your recent edit atBlack Sabbath, I came across a similar instance with Evel Knievel where an editor called Evel a "Motorcycle Stunt Man" the statement is true but have you ever heard Evel Knievel referred to anything other than a "Daredevil". In the same regard Ozzy Osbourne is refered to as "Ozzy", yes I will omit not always, it's kind of the same with Cher, her article is named "just" Cher. I do realize this is an Encyclopedia and we have a higher bar to uphold and in no way am I trying to start a discussion, or challenge your edit, I have to much respect for you, I just saw the edit and had to vent. Maybe I should just go back to bed, I am Honored to be your associate. Thanks Mlpearc MESSAGE 15:15, 6 March 2010 (UTC)

While adding same I was always comming across a thunmbnail parameter "alt=" I had no idea what this was for but I noticed if left blank it had no affect on the outcome of the thumbnail, I thought. Then curiosity got me, so naturally I had to look into it. Here is what I found Wikipedia:Alternative text for images which explained the use of the parameter. But moreover there is even a better motive (in my mind to use it) which I found HERE and HERE. So I have made a commitment to every thumb I come across to add "something, anything". Ok enough build up. I want to get this message out to the community as just a reminder or to inform those who are not aware of the use of the parameter just like I was, or why it's important to use it. If I were to guess, about 80% of the thumbnails do not use this option. This is now a permanent post on my User and Talk page,

I know pic of the day is out of the question. but why not Quote of the day, once seen it's really self explanatory. I guess I'm asking for input on how to get this out to the masses. Your thoughts please.

WikiCup 2010 March newsletter

We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. thanks for work on the cup, i doubt i can continue at the same rate. the backlog continues to decline. Pohick2 (talk) 01:00, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Belated congrats

I saw I had an old e-mail from you, and I wanted to get back to you about it... but I see the time for that has passed now. As you noted, I've been mostly inactive recently and so I haven't been keeping up with goings-on (aside from some glances at WP:TDD), but I'm really glad to see you made it through RfA. I hope we'll get more chances to work together soon! Dekimasuよ! 06:28, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

For unlocking the Kid Rock article.--Greg D. Barnes (talk) 23:30, 3 April 2010 (UTC)

Thoughts?

Any thoughts on the latest? I, like the other editors on that article, was under the impression that consensus had been reached and enforced. How do you propose we should proceed to deal with our one dissenting voice? Blackmetalbaz (talk) 18:55, 5 April 2010 (UTC)

I was largely talking about the list of nu metal bands article, having not been active on the Kid Rock article, though a cursory look over there suggests they are applying a similar approach. So what is procedure? Blackmetalbaz (talk) 19:08, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Whilst that would save a lot of arguments, the sad thing is that it would still make writing music articles more difficult rather than less :-) Blackmetalbaz (talk) 19:25, 5 April 2010 (UTC)
Just a note to say you may wish to revisit your last post on Talk:List of nu metal bands, you forgot to sign it and you also seem to have misread the date of the first band. Thanks! ~ mazca talk 22:11, 6 April 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 April newsletter

Round two is over, and we are down to our final 32. For anyone interested in the final standings (though not arranged by group) this page has been compiled. Congratulations to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), our clear overall round winner, and to Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) and Norway Arsenikk (submissions), who were solidly second and third respectively. There were a good number of high scorers this round- competition was certainly tough! Round three begins tomorrow, but anything promoted after the end of round two is eligible for points. 16 contestants (eight pool leaders and eight wildcards) will progress to round four in two months- things are really starting to get competitive.

Judge iMatthew has retired from Wikipedia, and we wish him the best. The competition has been ticking over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. A special thank you goes to participants Bavaria Stone (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) for their help in preparing for round three. Good luck everyone! Hi John,

Could I borrow you for a minute to help convince Poncheaux to stop vandalizing The Black Crowes? His edits typically consist of copyedits of arguable improvement, but sometimes he tries to sneak in erroneous facts and POV. For example: Edit 1, Edit 2, Edit 3, Edit 4. As you can see, he's been at this for months.

Thanks, Zeagler (talk) 18:29, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

I, too, wasn't sure whether he was a vandal or just misinformed...initially. But he's made the same edit about the gender of the Amorica cover model three or four times, and that convinced me. Anyway, thanks for looking into it. –Zeagler (talk) 18:53, 11 May 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. Yes, I realized that kind of textbook was about as "objective" a source as we could find. Regards, DocKino (talk) 20:14, 28 May 2010 (UTC)

Re: Good Luck

Thanks, you're a real friend. It took me about two months of work before I was really ready and comfortable with the list being put up for nomination. Well I'll see how it goes and have a happy Memorial Day. RG (talk) 22:01, 30 May 2010 (UTC)

File source and copyright licensing problem with File:Nobody Sings Anymore.png

File Copyright problem
File Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading File:Nobody Sings Anymore.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, we also need to know the terms of the license that the copyright holder has published the file under, usually done by adding a licensing tag. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Unsourced and untagged files may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the file will be deleted 48 hours after 10:09, 31 May 2010 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Sfan00 IMG (talk) 10:09, 31 May 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 May newsletter

We are half way through round 3, with a little under a month to go. The current overall leader is Hungary Sasata (submissions), who has 570 points. He leads pool C. Pools A, B and D are led by Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and White Shadows (submissions) respectively.

Two of last year's final 8, Sweden Theleftorium (submissions) and Iceland Scorpion0422 (submissions), have dropped out of the competition, saying they would rather their place went to someone who will have more time on their hands than them next round. On a related note, a special thank you goes to White Shadows (submissions) for his help behind the scenes once again. There is currently a problem with the poster, perhaps caused by the new skin- take a look at this discussion and see if you can help. The competition has continued to tick over well with minimal need for judge intervention, so thank you to everyone making that possible. Good luck to all! Re: How things happen

As I dive deeper into wikipedia, it is interesting to see how the policies and rules are developed. There are many subtleties in wiki-ethics that I never realized were formulated into stringent policy. I do agree with your suggested edit regarding biographies of living people. Any person moderately famous in a community should have at least one source about them. Hovden (talk page) 09:09pm, 10 June 2010 (GMT)

Davin Wood has composed the theme music for several notable television shows... the best known are Tom Goes to the Mayor and Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!. This has him meeting WP:MUSICBIO #10 "Has performed music for a work of media that is notable, e.g. a theme for a network television show". So as that particular guideline recomends, why not simply redirect? Schmidt, MICHAEL Q. 07:09, 15 June 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 June newsletter

We're half way through 2010, and the end of the WikiCup is in sight! Round 3 is over, and we're down to our final 16. Our pool winners were Ian Rose (submissions) (A), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) (B, and the round's overall leader), Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions) (C) New South Wales Casliber (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions) (D, joint), but, with the scores reset, everything is to play for in our last pooled round. The pools will be up before midnight tonight, and have been selected randomly by J Milburn. This will be the toughest round yet, and so, as ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Though unaffiliated with the WikiCup, July sees the third Great Wikipedia Dramaout- a project with not dissimilar goals to the WikiCup. Everyone is welcome to take part and do their bit to contribute to the encyclopedia itself.

If you're interested in the scores for the last round of the Cup, please take a look at Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Round 3 and Wikipedia:WikiCup/History/2010/Full/Round 3. Our thanks go to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for compiling these. As was predicted, Group C ended up the "Group of Death", with 670 points required for second place, and, therefore, automatic promotion. This round will probably be even tougher- again, the top two from each of the two groups will make it through, while the twelve remaining participants will compete for four wildcard places- good luck everyone! RE: Colin Brooks

Howdy

I was looking to see what kind of background there is hereabouts on Colin Brooks of Band of Heathens. I think that the article may be confusing him with another musician by the same name. As far as I know, he is not a drummer, and certainly is not in that role for BOH. I am not sure, but thought I would drop a note as I noticed you added the information about BOH, and may have just added it to an existing article about drummer by the same name. I know nothng about the drummer or the bands listed for Colin 1. I really don't know much about Colin of BOH, either, or I would do some editing.

WikiCup 2010 July newsletter

We are half-way through our penultimate round, and nothing is yet certain. Pool A, currently led by Hungary Sasata (submissions) has ended up the more competitive, with three contestants (Hungary Sasata (submissions), Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions) and New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions)) scoring over 500 points already. Pool B is led by New South Wales Casliber (submissions), who has also scored well over 500. The top two from each pool, as well as the next four highest scorers regardless of pool, will make it through to our final eight. As ever, anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.

Planning has begun for the 2011 WikiCup, with open discussions concerning scoring and flags for next year's competition. Contributions to those discussions would be appreciated, especially concerning the flags, as next year's signups cannot begin until the flag issue has been resolved. Signups will hopefully open at some point in this round, with discussion about possible changing in the scoring/process opening some time afterwards.

Earlier this round, we said goodbye to Pennsylvania Hunter Kahn (submissions), who has bowed out to spend more time on the book he is authoring with his wife. We wish him all the best. In other news, the start of this round also saw some WikiCup awards sent out by Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions). We appreciate his enthusiasm, and contestants are of course welcome to award each other prizes as they see fit, but rest assured that we will be sending out "official" awards at the end of the competition. Joyce Schwarz listing in Wikipedia -- you edited out -- said no books signivicant

I truly take objection to the fact that none of my books ae significant. This was the first mainstream book published on Multimedia EVER -- it was published in 1994 by Harcourt Brace Academic Press to be used as a textbook for colleges & universities and as a reference book tot he burgeoning multimedia professional community.

Multimedia: Gateway to the Next Millennium is sited in literally hundreds of future books and articles on new media. It went into its 4th printing and is still being used at more than 50 universities across the USA as a text book for new media programs.

Here are 6 pages (word document) of citations for Mutimedia: Gateway to the Next Millenium with the preface by Brannon Bragga, creator Star Trek Next Generation

I wanted you to see just some of the many references to this book and even the actual professor lists of textbooks for college and graduate level courses that feature this book today -- more than 16 years later. Remember, please that in 1994 when this book was published (prior to Mosaic) there was little or no worldwide web coverage available:

A question

Would you mind checking my edit on Kourosh Zolani's article lead section? I added three examples of his compositions. I want to make sure that they are OK. Thank you Thomasshane (talk) 01:37, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, I will remove the YouTube links. One of the editors asked only for some examples. These are some examples of the artist's works not conforming notability. Thank again,Thomasshane (talk) 02:26, 17 August 2010 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thomasshane (talkcontribs)

Can really a user delete a country ‘s history of music and art from WP?

Hi,

The same user who was highly involved in Kourosh Zolani’s AfD discussion and deleted a huge part of the comments from the opponent side on August 15 and Agust16, has nominated almost every Iranian musicians articles for deletion or speedy deletion today. Here are links to two pages of names: (page 1) and (page 2). The user is proposing to delete almost all the history of Iranian classical music from WP. This act sounds totally racial and discrimination to me. Is there any policy in Wikipedia to stop this user’s suspicious act? Thank you, Thomasshane (talk) 19:49, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Hey I wanted to let you know that the picture isn't the offical it's Tiemblo - Single can you change it to the offical one Thx.

I found that file at Allmusic which is normally reliable for album covers, can you tell me where I can find the official cover? J04n(talk page) 18:05, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions) was awarded top points for in the news this round. Toronto Gary King (submissions) contributed a variety of did you know articles. Finland Suomi Finland 2009 (submissions) said "I'm surprised to have survived so far into the competition", but was extactic to see Finland in the semi-finals. Norway Arsenikk (submissions) did not score this round, but has scored highly in previous rounds. We also say goodbye to Ian Rose (submissions), who withdrew earlier this month after spending six weeks overseas. Anyone interested in this round's results can see them here and here. Thank you to Bavaria Stone (submissions) for these.

Signups for next year's competition are now open. Planning is ongoing, with a key discussion about judges for next year open. Discussion about how next year's scoring will work is ongoing, and thoughts are more than welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiCup/Scoring. Also, TonyTheTiger is compiling some information and statistics on the finalists here- the final eight are encouraged to add themselves to the list.

Our final eight will play it out for two months, after which we will know 2010's WikiCup winner, and a variety of prizes will be awarded. You offered your help

This is User:2tuntony. I hope you can understand why I am loathe to trust any Wikipedia administrator at this point. However, you do appear to be one of the good ones. As you can see, my block has been increased to "indefinite" (which I suppose means "permanent"), and my talk page access has been restricted (largely making it "permanent" by default, as I can't use the page to request to be unblocked). I have made many good contributions here. I have done nothing to disrupt any articles, and I don't see how I have "disrupted" the project with a message on my talk page. I admit that it may seem offensive, but the administrator who blocked me himself has the words "go fuck yourself" written on his talk page. another administrator has a picture of herself with her middle finger raised on her user page. As usual, I guess that's OK because they're admins, to whom the rules don't apply. I placed the template on my page out of frustration. I have twice; once by an administrator, been accused of "edit warring" by users who had made a number of reverts equal to mine to the page in question. Somehow, in each case, I was "edit warring", while the other user, who's behavior was literally identical to mine, was apparently following the rules. I placed the template there not to be offensive, but to let people know that I will not tolerate hypocracy. And this seems to be yet another double standard, which I find extremely frustrating. However, with that having been said, if the template is the sticking point here, I will agree to not put it back if I am unblocked. If that is not possible, could you at least unblock my talk page, so that I may continue to adress this matter? Thank you for your time! User:2tuntony.

There is a lot of information, but I will start here if it's cool with you. This is is just some stuff I found. There is too much to do in one sitting. There is a ton of material on Scars on Broadway which mentions the shows we played with Metallica, namely, The Wiltern for the Silverlake conservatory of music, KROQ Weenie Roast and at the Pima Fairgrounds in Arizona.

Sorry to bother you sir, I noticed that you have promoted articles to good article status, reviewed two good article nominations and are a member of the WikiProject Musicians. Since joining wikipedia, I have worked on the Loaded article trying to expand it as much as I could (article prior to edits) and I was considering nominating it for a good article after looking at the good article criteria. I was just wondering if I could have your opinion, wither it would be worth nominating, edits to improve the page, etc. Would be appreciated if you have time :) (HrZ (talk) 19:40, 25 October 2010 (UTC))

The 2010 WikiCup is over! It has been a long journey, but what has been achieved is impressive: combined, participants have produced over seventy featured articles, over five hundred good articles, over fifty featured lists, over one thousand one hundred "did you know" entries, in addition to various other pieces of recognised content. A full list (which has yet to be updated to reflect the scores in the final round) can be found here. Perhaps more importantly, we have our winner! The 2010 WikiCup champion is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), with an unbelievable 4220 points in the final round. Second place goes to New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), with 2260, and third to New South Wales Casliber (submissions), with 560. Congratulations to our other four finalists – White Shadows (submissions), William S. Saturn (submissions), Connecticut Staxringold (submissions) and Colombia ThinkBlue (submissions). Also, congratulations to Hungary Sasata (submissions), who withdrew from the competition with an impressive 2685 points earlier in this round.

Prizes will also be going to those who claimed the most points for different types of content in a single round. It was decided that the prizes would be awarded for those with the highest in a round, rather than overall, so that the finalists did not have an unfair advantage. Winning the featured article prize is New South Wales Casliber (submissions), for five featured articles in round 4. Winning the good article prize is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for eighty-one good articles in round 5. Winning the featured list prize is Connecticut Staxringold (submissions), for six featured lists in round 1. Winning the picture and sound award is Jujutacular (submissions), for four featured pictures in round 3. Winning the topic award is Colorado Sturmvogel_66 (submissions), for forty-seven articles in various good topics in round 5. Winning the "did you know" award is New Orleans TonyTheTiger (submissions), for over one hundred did you knows is round 5. Finally, winning the in the news award is Republic of Ireland Candlewicke (submissions), for nineteen articles in the news in round three.

The WikiCup has faced criticism in the last month – hopefully, we will take something positive from it and create a better contest for next year. Like Wikipedia itself, the Cup is a work in progress, and ideas for how it should work are more than welcome on the WikiCup talk page and on the scoring talk page. Also, people are more than welcome to sign up for next year's competition on the signup page. Well done and thank you to everyone involved – the Cup has been a pleasure to run, and we, as judges, have been proud to be a part of it. We hope that next year, however the Cup is working, and whoever is running it, it will be back, stronger and more popular than ever. Until then, goodbye and happy editing! Country Yossi

Hi JO4n: Please note that the Country Yossi article has now been re-structured, upgraded and considerably improved with 22 new references and sources that describe and explain why this article is important. By the way, "Country Yossi" is actually a brand name that is derived from its originator, (just like Newman's Own does not equal Paul Newman even though he is the supposed creator of it). Please withdraw the AfD. Thank you, IZAK (talk) 20:55, 1 November 2010 (UTC)

Jewish bios and notifications -- a complex subject

Hi again JO4n: Thanks for your recent notifications at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism and thanks for your interest in articles pertaining to Wikipedia:WikiProject Judaism/Unreferenced BLPs. It is going to take time. Just on a point of procedure, that once articles generally directly pertaining to topics within Category:Jews and Judaism have been officially nominated as AfDs, then notifications should be placed at Wikipedia:WikiProject Deletion sorting/Judaism (an official Deletion sorting project), and of course it helps that an additional note is also left at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Judaism (a forum for talk about Judaism topics). Here are some points for your consideration:

  1. There is a great difference between Jews notable in academia and many famous rabbis and personalities, especially the more Haredi and Hasidic they are, because it is such an insular and hard-to-penetrate world they live in.
  2. Over the years, various editors have taken a stab at writing articles about such rabbis and subjects. The articles are known to many Judaic editors and they have let them stand because they are themselves familiar with the subjects and therefore know of their importance.
  3. But now along comes a new push to cite references in biographies and it's not easy. I have tried to deal with this issue over the years, see User:IZAK/Useful templates and pages#Notability in the field, not notability in general media, is the standard and User:IZAK/Useful templates and pages#Finding Internet sources for biographies about Haredi rabbis.
  4. That is also why I am a firm believer in the editorial philosophy espoused at Wikipedia:Don't demolish the house while it's still being built and at Wikipedia:Give an article a chance. Articles take many years to be built up.
  5. Perhaps it would be a good idea to notify a broad range of the most active Judaic editors about the current need to update articles to inspire them to improve articles, but on average few are very active at one given time.
  6. But please remember, things often move at a snail's pace and it would be extremely foolish to throw out the baby with the bath water by depriving Wikipedia of a solid nucleus of excellent biographies.

Thanks again for all your efforts. Let's keep up the dialogue. Most sincerely, IZAK (talk) 15:52, 2 November 2010 (UTC)

Input?

I hope you don't mind me following you over here from Wikipedia_talk:Notability_(sports)#Conflict_between_WP:NFOOTBALL_and_Wikipedia:Notability_.28sports.29.23Gaelic_games.3F, but I saw that you have done some work creating some BLPs and I was wondering if I could get your neutral feedback on a sticky wicket at Michelle Thomas. There has been a recurring debate over the sources for her birthdate for the past year or so. I added some notes here [5] today to get an idea as to what we can do with reliable sources conflict. If it's not something you have the bandwidth for right now, I completely understand. Erikeltic (Talk) 01:17, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Thank you!

Thank you for your support at my RfA last week. I'll do everything I can to live up to your expectations and trust. Can I also take this time to say thank you for signing up to help with the Great Backlog Drive. There'll be a lot of announcements this week and I want to say thank you for signing up at such an early date. It means a lot to both me and the team. In addresing your concern that you were unable to "unable to find significant coverage in any reliable sources independent of the subject", editors did find reliable secondary reliable sources and have expanded and properly cited the article Janette Luu since you commented. You need not change your "delete" comment, but I thought I might stop by and let you know that what was once an unsourced stub is now a somewhat better start class article. references and sources

Hi John, I am working on an article and it keeps getting removed because the info is not referenced. I know for a fact that this person exists, what kind of sources do I need to show Wiki that he does?

Happy Holidays

Hey, J04n. Thanks for the message and I wish you the best this season. As you know I haven't been editing very much over the last few months, but I've just been very, very busy. Though I still check my account every week and I hope to get back in the saddle pretty. Well, have a good one, ciao. RG (talk) 19:11, 19 December 2010 (UTC)

Jacques Bourboulon

  • Don't worry. By the way I was not considering that saying that Bourboulon was shooting pictorials of nude teenagers was libelous. Indeed my point was to say that at the time (the crazy 70s) it was perfectly ok. But now we have a different set of standards regarding underage erotism and that it is no longer acceptable. I saw that as a kind of illustration of the evolution. I could probably find a source, like a copy of Photo of the seventies to reference the fact that his models were 14, but that would mean spending money since I don't think Photo is available in public libraries. Indeed I miss the Discussion page more than the article, there were some good points there. The article is ok now, although it does not establish the notability clearly enough.
