March 2014[edit]

Information icon Hello, JBombastus. We welcome your contributions to Wikipedia, but if you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article Jim Donovan (director), you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about ensuring their edits are verified by reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. Jackmcbarn (talk) 03:04, 16 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, thanks for the reminder Jackmcbarn. I thought I had read all the applicable polices about this situation, as I was diligent before I created my first article. I believe I was very careful to maintain NPOV on the subject. Also, nothing in the content of the article promotes any commercial interests; the article is about a noteworthy person; all claims are factual and referenced; and all references are primary or fact-checked secondary sources. If there is a specific issue about the article, that I have overlooked, please let me know-- I'd be happy to fix it.
I don't see anything obviously wrong with it, but I'm also not very knowledgeable in that field. In the future, if you want to write an article you have a COI about, your best bet would be to send it through WP:AFC first, where experienced reviewers will make sure it looks good. Jackmcbarn (talk) 16:55, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Jackmcbarn-- thanks for that! I am learning. For now, I am concerned about the COI banner at the top of the page in question; what needs to happen to have that removed? Or should I take the article down (can I do that?) and then re-try by going through WP:AFC first this time? I do plan to write many other articles-- or at least contribute to existing ones, but I took the chance on writing this one first, as I felt there was a general need (there are numerous other wiki articles that mention this subject, but which link to nowhere.) Thanks again for your help, and if you can, please advise about the COI banner; I felt I was acting in good faith, but the COI banner carries pretty negative implications for the subject himself-- this worries me. JBombastus (talk) 17:15, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to send it through AfC, go to [1] and click "Move page", then put {{subst:submit}} on the top of the page. If it makes it through there, the COI banner can be removed. Jackmcbarn (talk) 17:19, 18 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
