Colours in your signature
[edit]Your signature has colours how do I do that??? --Adam1213 17:02, 6 October 2005 (UTC)
- I use a "font" HTML tag with a "color" attribute. Write
<font color="#rrggbb">
before the text you want in colour and</font>
after it. The "#rrggbb" part is a # sign followed by three two-digit hexadecimal values, rr means red, gg means green, and bb means blue. If you don't know how hexadecimal works or don't want to try out various combinations, some well-recognised colour names like "red", "green", "blue", "yellow", "brown", "gray"/"grey", etc. also work (but then you don't use the # sign). — JIP | Talk 17:30, 6 October 2005 (UTC)

I have a way of adding signatures to vandalism templates. to speed warning users up. Will you support it
- I have never actually got around to using the vandalism templates. Perhaps I should take the time to learn about them. But anyway, what's wrong with simply writing ~~~~ after the template? It doesn't take many seconds. — JIP | Talk 16:41, 8 October 2005 (UTC)
Look it just speeds up the job. Vandalism needs to be removed as fast as possible. I did not know about colourful signatures until I had seen your own. I noticed that I can add a 3rd link to mine I wanted to have it as add a new section to my talk page but there was some problem. Do you know how I could get it to work?
- Sorry, no I don't. — JIP | Talk 16:54, 8 October 2005 (UTC)

Deleting Articles
[edit]Hello, I would have preferred to email you concerning your misinformed deletion of my page, but you have specified no such email. My creation of the penis-showing game page was not nonsense as the craze is sweeping college campuses nationwide. The word "shizzle" for instance, is nonsense, but to claim a page shouldn't exist because of this is baseless. A better claim would have been it being stupid and/or derogatory, both of which would also have been poor reasons for deletion. The movie "The Aristocrats" is both, yet a page dedicated to it has been formed. So, if a game such as tic tac toe can have a page, then surely so can a nonsensical, stupid, and derogatory game. Thank you. - aghazi@ucdavis.edu
While we're at it, "Wiking Off" is a legit term!.... as is "Wik Off"!....
as in: "My client didn't show up, so I'm going to wik off for the next 45 minutes."
Please undelete "Wiking Off". It is catching on rapidly in the cubicle-office community. Besides, the term is GOOD for Wikipedia. It implies that people can get as engrossed in Wikipedia as the can in doing.... well.... other things. UNDELETE IT, or you will look like a jerk later when many more people write to you and confirm that this is a legitimate term.

- In future, please post questions on user talk pages, not user pages.
- If you'd like to have a page undeleted, this is the place. You'll have to be very persuasive: "If you don't undelete it, you will look like a jerk later" won't wash. -- Hoary 06:33, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- I have opened the VfU discussions on the anon user's behalf and voted keep deleted myself. Thanks for your help, Hoary. — JIP | Talk 06:41, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
JIP, I believe that the "wiking off" was meant as a sarcastic comment on my page. I believe someone was attempting to defend you by using name-calling and capitals. Both of these methods are immature and do not further any point. Futhermore, no real defense is presented by the user to keep my page deleted. I thank you for forwarding my page to the appropriate place and I hope we can proceed amicably. Thank you again. - aghazi@ucdavis.edu

[edit]Greetings, Aluion. You are the first person I've seen to claim a near-native Klingon language skill. Have you studied it for long? — JIP | Talk 10:44, 11 October 2005 (UTC)
- It's the amount of effort I've dedicated to studying it than the length of time.
- I'm a closet Trekkie (though sometimes I drift over to the Dark Side and watch Star Wars). Studying languages and communicating in different languages is also one of my favorite pastimes. I also have a soft spot for constructed languages, and have written several pages on the topic.
- tlhIngan Hol combines two of my hobbies together, so I'm more intrested in learning it than normal (as I was with Quenya/Sindarin due to my enjoyment of Tolkien's works). Having studied it so much -- the only thing that really keeps me from being a native speaker is birthright. (c;

Your sig
[edit]I just thought I'd mention that everytime I see your sig it reminds me of an American brand of peanut butter by the brandname of Jif. No offense meant of course, it's just that the letters in your username being so close to "Jif" and the colors used remind me of it. This also made me wonder if anyone else ever pointed this out to you. Dismas|(talk) 16:29, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

- Interesting that nobody had pointed it out before. It's a fairly popular brand, I'd say one of the top two. The article doesn't show the label but if you go to the company's web site you can see the colors. Dismas|(talk) 19:52, 13 October 2005 (UTC)

[edit]"Oppose. I do not normally oppose for editcountitis reasons, but this is an exceptional case. Only 40 edits, of which the vast majority are to his own userspace? That is clearly too few. — JIP | Talk 05:24, 14 October 2005 (UTC)"
I was wondering what edits had to do with the adminship I requested? not to mention, like I said in half of the articles I started under my userspace, that the only reason why they aren't in the main namespace is because wikibooks is too big of a mess right now and I don't have time to clean it up on top of my studies.
I don't mean to be rude or anything, but I'm just curious what any of that had to do with my basic understandings of the rules and just asking for admin for the specific purpose of being able to quickly revert vandalism when applicable (which doesn't matter at this point as I got the proper script from other admins) and to ban spammers. It often occurs in #wikipedia-en-vandalism where the same user or IP address blanks/adds a ton of useless text to ~20 different pages, but because people who do the reverts are trying to go after more vandalism and don't have the time to edit his discussion page they get left to keep on doing it. I just wanted access to stop that before it happens. The other thing I wanted to be able to do is delete the pages that come up that can't even qualify to be a revert, what good are those?
Please let me know why my lack of edits would affect my knowledge of how the process works when I monitor all mailing lists and talk to many people, both on irc, on the phone, and in person at wikimania all related to Wikipedia. (Preferably my userspace, but I'll try and monitor this) --AppleBoy Talk 06:54, 15 October 2005 (UTC)

SIGFUD
[edit]In reference to the replies to Wikipedia:Reference_desk/Science#SIGFUD. Why ask the question what SIGFUD is when you were the original author of the SIGFUD article?. This is especially worrying as there is some consensus that this article is a hoax. Span statements around comments on RfAs
[edit]With all due respect, the span statements around your comments on RfAs such as this one [1] are a bit visually annoying. Further, now User:Firefox is taking after you. I don't see that these boxes around your comments add any information, and I think they are a distraction and a detraction. Would you please explain these? It can only get worse :) --Durin 18:17, 17 October 2005 (UTC)
- Durin! Did you think we would succumb to such a hopeless ruse? HA HA HA! Ha... Actually, I'd been wondering when people would notice it. See Transformers (comic) or Thunderwing for an explanation. Or [2] for further resources. It was all a joke. Saying "we" instead of "I" in the green-bordered span should have been a giveaway. — JIP | Talk 18:51, 17 October 2005 (UTC)

Savusavu
[edit]Please stop inserting your irrelevant information in the Savusavu article. What a word of the same name means in Finnish is totally irrelevant to the topic of the article. I am keeping an eye on the article, and will keep on removing it. Throwing that kind of irrelevance into Wikipedia articles only trivializes the project. David Cannon 10:15, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
- As I said in the edit summary, I have added similar comments to other articles, such as Nicolette Palikat and Mahakala, and AFAICR they have not been removed. So I thought the comment would be fine in Savusavu too. — JIP | Talk 10:19, 18 October 2005 (UTC)
As usual, the shadow main page that I keep trying to make gets deleted again. Almost immediately. Why?!?!?!?!?
Because it is often vandalised, I know the main page is protected. However, sometimes there are silly errors in it eg wrong spelling/grammar. So why cant I have an editable shadow main page?
- Because it would serve no purpose. The only reason the main page serves is to be the first thing a user sees when he/she goes to "http://en.wikipedia.org". Your "shadow main page" does not have that purpose, because the user would have to know about its existence beforehand and type "Shdw Main Page" into the search box. I know the difference is that the main page is protected and the shadow main page is not, but as edits in the shadow main page don't show up at the main page, or vice versa, they don't really seem to have anything to do with each other. Also, creating a "shadow main page" in the main article namespace is definitely wrong - it would then be an article about something called a "Shdw Main Page". If you really insist on a shadow main page, you can create it in your own userspace. — JIP | Talk 12:05, 18 October 2005 (UTC)

I mentioned this on the talk page, where a few of them talked about the changes. I have still been going through the rest of them making sure they are protected. I didn't protect that one yet though. «»Who?¿?meta 07:55, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
a heads-up on the List of Guantanamo Bay detainees
[edit]Greetings,
Since you voted to keep the article List of Guantanamo Bay detainees I thought I would give you a "heads-up". A copyright violation was filed against the article, on October 11th. It was filed by someone who had voted to delete the article on October 5th.
I believe that the copyright violation is entirely bogus. I believe it is bogus because, as explained in Feist Publications v. Rural Telephone Service, lists of facts, like lists of names, cannot be copyright. This Feist v. Rural case went all the way to the US Supreme Court, which made the possibly counter-intuitive ruling that the amount of effort someone put in to compiling a list plays no role in determining whether that list is eligible for copyright protection.
Even if alphabetic lists of names could be copyright, I believe the wikipedia list would not be violating copyright since the list was compiled from various sources.
Yes, I have considered that this user invoked a bogus copyright violation to achieve a result that failed in the {AfD}. Yes, I asked them to terminate the copyright violation process, in light of Feist v Rural. They declined. The backlog in the administrators dealing with copyright violations seems to be on the order of a month long.
Anyhow, I wanted the people who had shown interest in the article to not freak out, or feel betrayed, by seeing the copyright violation tag. -- Geo Swan 11:38, 19 October 2005 (UTC)
