Review for "Water Mass" page additions

[edit]

Hi Jackmetzger99, good work adding information about water masses to Wikipedia! You've made some great improvements to this page. What follows is a review by an external reviewer who based their comments on the version of your page that's available at this link.

Reviewer Comments

[edit]
Overall Structure
[edit]
  • You might want to put headings into your Wikipedia page, such as “Overview”, “Water Masses Around the World”, and “Characteristics of Water Masses”.
Paragraph 1
[edit]
  • You might mention that water masses can also be considered as sea water types to help the reader grasp term (https://os.copernicus.org/preprints/os-2018-139/os-2018-139.pdf)
  • The first paragraph mentions that the “… similar properties include temperature, salinity, chemical - isotopic ratios, and other physical quantities”. Perhaps reword this to group into conservative and non-conservative tracers so that the second paragraph makes sense when respective tracers are mentioned. Here is an article that you might reference that breaks the water mass properties into conservative (potential temperature and salinity) and non-conservative tracers (silicate, oxygen, phosphate and nitrate) https://os.copernicus.org/preprints/os-2018-139/os-2018-139.pdf.
  • Don’t forget to add citations in-text and at the bottom of the page.
Paragraph 4
[edit]
  • This paragraph doesn’t read smoothly. It seems like you need an opening sentence that sets the stage for the subject of the paragraph, and then you can go into details of specific water mass characteristics and how these characteristics determine known water masses.
Figures
[edit]
  • Add some text to make your caption a bit more descriptive - for example, if the different colors of the water masses means something, could you describe that briefly? (for example, the turquoise water masses are colder/saltier, and therefore sink or sit along the ocean bottom)

I hope the above is helpful as you wrap up your edits on your Wikipedia page! If you have any questions about this review, please let me know and I'll help you contact the reviewer. JoGDelta (talk) 22:37, 30 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]
