Hi Jadolfo. The original quote was: "another steam locomotive at Newcastle, employed for a similar purpose, and moving along without any rack wheel, simply by its friction against the rail road". However this does not make clear what "a similar purpose" was. It is clear if you read the whole entry but not in a short quotation. To assist readers' comprehension "hauling coals" is inserted to clarify what the purpose was. Were parentheses to be used it would appear as if it was part of the original.
