Invitation to wikiFeed

[edit]

Hi Jaketown22! Welcome to Wikipedia!

Figuring out what to edit can be tough. I’m part of a team that has created a tool, wikiFeed, that recommends Wikipedia articles to edit based on news you're interested in. Most news sites have Twitter or RSS feeds that update as new articles are published. wikiFeed takes in your preferred news sources' Twitter or RSS feeds - from politics to pop culture - and finds the most relevant Wikipedia articles for you to edit based on that content. We hope that using this tool will be a lot of fun, and it may help you come up with some new ideas on how to contribute to Wikipedia. Please participate! To sign up, follow this link to our website. Once you're there, click the "create an account" link to get started.

For more information about wikiFeed, visit our project page. If you have any questions, please feel free to ask via my talk page, or by email at wikifeedcc@gmail.com. We appreciate your time and hope you enjoy playing with wikiFeed! Jeremey Bentham (talk) 16:32, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The previous article was very early in the band's history, and was almost entirely about the members and their previous history. The right way to handle that would have been to make it a "redirect" to The Beautiful South where it is mentioned, until it acquired some achievements and notability of its own, but various people kept reverting that, so in the end a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/The South (band) decided to delete it. That means that before you can post a new article about it, you need to approach user Salvio Giuliano (talk), the admin who closed the discussion, and try to convince him that the reasons for deletion cited then no longer apply. As a year has gone by, that may be true. If he does not agree, you can go to WP:Deletion review.

You would do best to make a draft article in your "user space" first, which you can show Salvio. To do that, go to Help:Userspace draft and fill in the title. That will set up a draft page for you.

Some advice:

  • Before you start, read WP:Your first article and WP:Notability (music). Wikipedia is choosy about article subjects, and WP:Notability (music) explains what a band need to have achieved in order to have an article.
  • Also read User:JohnCD/Not a noticeboard. It is important to understand that Wikipedia is quite a different sort of site from Myspace and Facebook, and the sort of promotional writing which is normal there would lead to speedy-deletion as an advertisement here. A Wikipedia article requires a neutral point of view, no opinions, just plain facts cited to reliable sources.
  • If you are connected with the band, you have from our point of view a WP:Conflict of interest. That need not stop you, but you need to be very careful. Read Wikipedia:Best practices for editors with conflicts of interest. Take great care not to think you are writing for the band - you are writing for Wikipedia about the band.
  • Don't (as the previous versions did) go on about the glories of The Beautiful South and the previous triumphs of the band members. This article is about this band and what it has achieved. Notability (in Wikipedia's sense) is not inherited.

If you have any questions, ask below here - I will watch this page. Out of curiosity, why did you choose me to ask, rather than Salvio? Regards, JohnCD (talk) 23:31, 30 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
