re: Dead external links[edit]

ooops, no-one even responded to this, so *I* will! Well, that's a good idea, but the problem is the legality of us hosting the information. Beyond linking to the Internet Archive's backups, I really don't know that we can go making copies of something without nasty problems, or at least having to set up a complex legality reasoning page like the Archive has.

The easiest option would be to create a screenshot compilation (say 800x1600) of what the entire page showed and host it off of WP itself. That way the questionable fair use of such a capture would be in the hands of the provider. Or... something... one current idea for Wikiversity is that linked-to sites be archived by WV itself, so I guess when they get their proposal ironed out we could mimic it. Nineteen Eighty-Four[edit]

Wow, thanks for your nice comments James. Like you I have often found that people take 1984 to be an anti-communist novel and when I try to explain that it is about all totalitarianism they find it difficult to believe, as the misinterpretation seems to have become accepted knowledge.

Similarly many people seem to think that Animal Farm is anti-communist, when plainly Orwell has deep sympathies for the animals and animalism. He was still a socialist, the novel was purely a warning about those who would usurp the revolution for their own gains.

Hi, Luca: firstly, I'm not too hot on how to reply to these messages. Should I cross-post to your talk page? How does one go about doing that? I guess I'll reply here and see what happens - if you could reply back and let me know the protocol I'd greatly appreciate it!

Now, to answer your question. This is a bit of a controversial point, but I actually added one of my essays as a reference to the Nineteen Eighty-Four article. I suppose this is kind of breaching rules regarding self-interest, but to be quite honest my essay is the only thing available on the net that served my purpose. It's fully referenced and kind of peer reviewed, in the sense that it was good enough to get me into Graduate School), and is called Hope Begins in the Dark: Re-reading Nineteen Eighty-Four; it's published under the name James Benstead. It is not massively to do with public perception; it is more to do with reading NEF in a more positive/optimistic way; but it does carry a bit of material that would be of use and a number of references that would be of more use (in particular, I think Stonor Saunders' book Who Paid the Piper?: The CIA and the Cultural Cold War would be of use. My essay isn't brilliant, but it does summarise a lot of other people's interesting ideas. I keep meaning to re-write it and publish it "properly", but other stuff (like the 8,000 words I currently have to write for my Master's) keeps getting in the way! I would be interested in hearing what you thought of it, and also your opinion on whether it should be a reference in the NEF article at all... --James Kemp 22:59, 27 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Novels worklist[edit]

Thanks for coming back, I tend to suggest that the most desired novel articles are loaded into the worklist. If we put "too" many the efforts of everyone will be diluted and nothing will get done. Pele goals[edit]

If you do a diff you can see what I wrote :) Basically the first four competitions in the columns are all league competitions and the Taca de Prata evolved from the RSPS. I think a note should also be left saying something along the lines of: "Santos did play other competitive games during this period, for example the Taça dos Campeões Estaduais [1], the 1968 Campeonato Nacional [2] and the Intercontinental Cup [3]. However it can be extremely difficult to quantify which were truely competitive, and which were merely friendly tournaments.. blah..."

It might be an idea to add an "Others" column to the end to stick a few of these results into, and which can be added to upon new infomation. The Intercontinental Cup should definitely be recognised. Rivelino[edit]

Hi Jim! I got the Rivelino information from the Corinthians Almanac(an actual book). His club did not play international games at the time, so my mission was easier. I got the information for Fluminense from hthe club website; and the international games from the RSSF Brasil.

There was not a proper Brazilian league until 71, so it is generally accepted that the "Rio Sao Paulo" and "Copa Brasil" are considered as domestic leagues. Besides that, the regional championship (Paulista for Corinthians, Carioca for Fluminense) are played officialy in the beginning of the year). I do not see any problem in using the same criteria for Pelé.

Jim, the story about Pelé's goals is about improving his image, but not as a conspiracy theory of sorts, just art of the media circus. Actually, people do not see anything wrong with that or care that much; you can see the same thing happening now trying to get Romario to 1000 goals.

If I remember well, there is about 11 goals in the army, plus 60 in Cosmos.

Brasil is a big country, and travel was very difficult, so the games were played regionally. Many teams to today cannot afford to travel all across the country to play, and play the regional competitions to qualify to the third division.

It was an article published in Folha_de_S._Paulo on May 14, 1995 in a special supplement, four pages. It has all the goals recounted up to the number 1,000; The book from Orlando Duarte has all the goals, in editions after 1996. No matter the promotional reasons, at least you can *choose* what to count.

Rv on Pele article[edit]

Did you revert my change to the Pele article because you thought I had restored the copvio picture? I didn't restore the copyvio picture, I restored an older picture than used to be on the page. Granted, this second picture is the subject of unknown provenance but it is not copyvio as far as I know. Could you restore my edit if you were mistaken? As I said, I'm not familiar with Scottish poetry, so I don't know which phrase is more prevalent. So if the term Burns stanza is more prevalent then perhaps it should hold the article content. Hello James Kemp. I want to thank you for reverting the anonymous users comments on my userpage. The constant change in their IP address made it difficult to contact them and explain the need for verifiability in their edits. Realizing that they might be trying to enter correct information I took a different tack on checking their facts and I have written a new comment on the Craig-Morgan discussion page about what I found. As a wikignome I am not one who likes to get into an edit conflict and I know that, in the grand scheme of things, this specific article is only a small part of Wikipedia. But, I am also proud of what Wikipedia is trying to accomplish and if this editor can provide reliable sources I will be as happy as anyone else to see the article changed and improved. Well the user has signed up to get around the semi-protect. The user still does not provide any sources. I propose a compromise wherein we list the shows that IMDb agrees with, but not the ones that the user claims are for another R C-M or the ones the user claims to be in that aren't verifiable. Also, the users edits don't completely reach the MoS requirements. I wnet looking in another direction to get to the root of there being two different actors and found this [[4]] and this[[5]] which I think helps back up an important part of his story. I am not sure he will take suggestions from me in good stead, since I have made the mistake of making a mountin out of a molehill with his article. Hm. Do we know anything about American Reporter? Is there any kind of editorial oversight there? It claims to be an online newspaper, but what exactly separates it from a blog? I guess that my answer to you is "I don't know", as I'm not sure whether this is a reliable source or not. I don't think the fact that it can only be found by Google cache is of much importance.
