Some topics that are almost always accepted

[edit]

Topics that almost always meet Wikipedia's notability guidelines include incorporated cities, counties, and larger layers of government meet the notability guidelines. School districts that are independent of cities and counties also typically qualify.

They don't qualify because they are cities, counties, etc. but because they get significant coverage from reliable sources. Now, the reality is that they get significant coverage from reliable sources because they do what cities, counties, states, etc. do.

Likewise, almost all "general" high schools that have a 12th grade will do things that generate significant coverage from reliable sources, but some may not. Specialized schools, particularly those with a "low profile" in the press such as those without sports teams, usually will not generate enough significant (i.e. non-routine) coverage to qualify. Schools that do not have a 12th grade (i.e. junior high schools and elementary schools) rarely qualify - while they almost always get "local press" that is considered "routine coverage" by most Wikipedia editors, so it's best not to try to write an article about such a school unless there is something exceptional about it that gets significant, usually non-local, coverage.

Most specialized taxing districts (e.g. fire protection districts, hospital districts, etc.) will not meet this requirement even if they are larger than a city.

There are many equivalents to US counties and cities in other countries without articles.

Other topics that generally qualify for articles:

Olympic athletes, prize-winners of major prizes like the Oscars or Tony Awards, the Nobel Prizes, etc., heads of state or heads of countries, members of national-level parliaments, congresses, and the like, holders of high-ranking titles of nobility (this varies, but anyone granted a rank roughly equivalent to a Duke in the United Kingdom likely qualifies, as do many who were born into nobility), high-ranking religious leaders (head of a major church, as well as most Cardinals and Archbishops in the Roman Catholic church), nation-states past and present, hurricanes and typhoons, and many other topics. There are major gaps in most of these areas if you go back in history.

If you want to work on animal species that do not have the significant press coverage needed to have a stand-alone article in Wikipedia, try Wikispecies. Wikipedia will generally accept articles on any species with at least two species even if there is little or no press other than that of the discoverer, provided that the genus has been generally accepted by the academic community, but Wikispecies is really the place you want to be if you are working on species that are not "commonly known" to laypeople. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:27, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Topics that draw scrutiny

[edit]

Any topic that someone - even someone other than the contributor - might want to insert into Wikipedia to meet their own agenda (typically advertisement/promotion or pushing an ideology - Wikipedia articles tend to rank high in search-engine searches) tends to draw extra scrutiny. This includes articles about living people, existing companies, existing organizations, current topics of scientific research, and politically-charged topics.

Generally, if an article on one of these topics clearly shows that the topic meets Wikipedia's notability guidelines by a clear margin (i.e. it's neither "barely notable" nor does it rely on a weak premise of notability), it steers clear of sources which anyone might have an issue with (typically biased sources), and it is clearly not biased, it will be left alone or improved upon. Otherwise it may draw heavy scrutiny and be proposed for deletion or nominated for deletion at WP:Articles for deletion.

The list above is NOT meant to be exhaustive, they are just a few areas where you may run into "pushback" if your topic isn't clearly notable, your article isn't sourced almost entirely with acceptable sources, and the article doesn't use these acceptable sources to clearly show that the article's subject is clearly notable. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 15:43, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what to think

[edit]

Either you had the very bad misfortune of editing in a manner very similar to those who try to use Wikipedia for promotional purposes, or you are such a person and are doing a passable job at convincing me you are not. So, either I owe you an apology or you owe everyone one. I'll assume the former and apologize here and now for anything that I said or implied against you personally and against your classmates, professor, and university both personally and as a group. I stand behind what I said regarding the article though - even if Jimbo Wales (the co-founder of Wikipedia, Jimbo Wales (talk · contribs)) had written that exact text, my opinion of it would have been the same (well, that, and I would wonder if he had received a bump on the head and forgotten everything he knew about how to edit Wikipedia ).

I have a suggestion for your professor: Before the next term, he should read Wikipedia:School and university projects. Wikipedia has an entire group of people who specialize in helping professors and teachers use Wikipedia in the classroom. They also have specialized tools and user-rights to make it easy for professors and teachers to manage class projects. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 21:10, 10 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

was adding books to the article

[edit]

I added 2 books with references and when I did you deleted the listing why please explain why you delete after the books were added.

Do you work for a competitor and why would anyone delete the article when adding books to it.

Did we add the wrong book

Perpetual Income: How-to Generate Cash Flow from Low-End House Investments by Bryan Wittenmyer (Jul 1, 1999)Page 32
Rent Reviews and Variable Rents Hardcover – December 1, 1984 by D.N. Clarke(Author) J.E. Adams (Author) PAGE 38

The next article I write will be to the company rent my vacation home and let them handle this.

What reason do you have to delete when we are working on references. At this point please terminate me form my membership if this is not put back on the site. I will also never forget what was done here for the rest of my life and I worked for free. Just delete me as I suspect this is corruption on a good day.

I will also recommended everyone in our class cancel the membership and never help again. goodbye forever Jay Frank
