When I met Nick I was a shy, confused, girl who didnt know anything about life. Until i met Nick. Nick taught me things that you can learn in school or by reading books and watching TV. He saved me from being a victim of societies mess, he taught me how to analyse people and to pick and choose the people that i wanted to associate myself with. And above all else he taught me how to live my life for me, and thats something i will forever be greatful for. I only had the pleasure of knowing Nick for 3 months. And it was nothing short of amazing. Now id like to think im pretty well rounded because thanks to Nick i have as much street smarts as i do book smarts. Below is the essay i had to write for my journalism class that i was taking over the summer. The topic was the story of someones life. My Name is Jessica Beckham and this the story of Nick LaBean
Nick was born in a small town in Michigan and lived there until he was 5. His parents got divorced and him and his mom moved to Deltona Florida. He started going to Discovery Elementry and this is where he met Kyle Gilliam, Chris Seremeta, and Mike Lewis. He never knew that he had started a life long friendship with the three of them. when Nick was 7 his dad past away from struggling with cancer. This really tore Nick apart. And it was then that he gave up his beliefs in God.
Nick got older and started going to Deltona Middle School. His grades started to drop and he was always in detention with Kyle. Nick wanted more than anything to fit in. and he tried but couldnt. There was one teacher who never gave up on Nick. His name was Mr. Noyes (pronounced Noise). Mr. Noyes saw something in Nick. On the last day of 6th grade he told Nick something that would make a huge impact on him. He told Nick that if he wanted to fit in all he had to do was take control of his life and live it his own way. He told Nick to not give up because he had bad grades because all they are, are letters on a piece of paper.
The during the summer of 6th grade going into 7th. Nicks best friend Kyle moved away. Nick was heartbroken. There he was feeling alone. His best friend had moved and Nick wasnt sure if he'd ever see him again. Nick got braces over that summer. Nick started discovered punk rock music and fell in love with it. He also started listening to Heavy Metal. When he went too school and it was like a whole new world for Nick. He had taken what Mr. Noyes told him and used it. And just like he told him he became popular. But his popularity would come at a price. He got mixed up in the wrong crowd and started smoking weed almost everyday. He would get high in the alley by his house every day with his best friend Mike. Nick started dating girls. The only problem was he was more concerned with girls than he was anything. He cut classes and his grades suffered. That year Nick failed 7th grade. It was then he realized that he needed to do something about it.
Nick was stuck in 7th grade when all his friends were in 8th grade. Him, Chris and Mike were still good friends. And Nick a bunch of new people. And he became friends with everyone in his new 7th grade class. This is the year Nick started skateboarding. and from the time he stepped on his board he fell in love with it. He loved ever aspect of it. The sound his board made when he popped and ollie, the sound it made when he rolled over cracks, everything, he loved it all. He met Brandon Kellis who still to this day is one of Nicks closest friends. He also met Kirsten Brooks and Jen Dyess. Nick started dating Kirsten and that went on for 10 months. Then shortly before 7th grade ended they broke up, but still remained good friends.
In 8th grade Nick was known by everyone in the school and he wasnt failing. He was happy. Then this kid by the name of Micheal Hernandez started going to school. him and Nick didnt like eachother from the moment they met. Nicks old friend from 5th grade DJ Flynn started going to that school as well. DJ and Nick were at one time really close. and the DJ turned on Nick. DJ and Mike would try to start fights with Nick and his good friend Tom Devito. That turned into and everyday fight between the skaters and the "wiggers." The fight finally ended at the end of the year. Nick and Tom both failed. but a teacher at the school by the name of Dr. Robare told the school that if they didnt pass them he would quit. Next thing you knew Nick and Tom both got letters in the mail saying that they passed.
By 9th grade Nick was tired of school. But his best friend Kyle moved to Florida. Nick basically lived with Kyle. and the two would skate everywhere. and were always together. The year went on with no fights or anything. Kyle started dating Amanda Meyers and began hanging out with her everyday. Nick liked Amanda so he understood so he was happy for Kyle even though he barely saw him. So he started skipping school everyday with brandon. They both passed and went onto 10 grade. And Kyle moved again but to Ohio.
Nick was friendless. Then he started going to New Generation Skateshop which is where i met him. he came in a few times and i was really shy around him. Then one day he started talking to me. He came in a couple more times and we'd talk the whole time. Then one night he was helping me hang up shirts, when he asked me on a date to go see a movie. Me and Nick spent a lot of time together over the course of the three months. He taught me things that you cant learn in school. Nick is a very smart person when he applies himself. I often asked what the purpose of living was, one day nick told me. " The purpose of living is to make changes for the next generation of people. Were put on this earth to make changes." Those words will forever stick with me. Nick made quite an impact on my life. I am no longer shy, and thanks to him i know a lot about how the world works. And I owe it all to him.
This is nicks best friend chris and this story isnt all right, nick did drink and smoke but it wasnt a PROBLEM or an addiction. Kyle moved back n forth from where ever he had to go and back to deltona it was maybe 3 times he went away and came back. Nick and Kyle werent best friends it was the three of us it was a Tri-pod!
