Group Partner[edit]

Hi Jason, I look forward to the Wiki project. I'm new to editing in Wikipedia so thankfully it seems to be well explained so far! This is my first semester in the Bioinformatics program. I have a background in research but have always been hands on in the lab so a lot of the computer work is new to me. I currently live in Pensacola, FL (recently moved from CA). Yeah, I'm also new to the editing process. Most of my experience with Wikipedia is trying to get my students to realize that it is not a primary source of information when submitting research papers and projects. There seems to be an abundance of tutorials and other materials though that do a good job of explaining how to do things. Just out of curiosity...what made you choose bioinformatics? It took me a while to choose which field I wanted to get a higher degree in. I graduated college in 2007 with a BS in Chemistry. I worked a few years in industry at DuPont and then a few years in genetics research at The Scripps Research Institute. I found the genetics research I was involved in to be so very cool that I knew that it was the field for me. After being in the lab for almost 7 years I wanted to switch gears a little and give the data analysis / bioinformatics side a run. Rebeccachappel (talk) 21:02, 28 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Jason - how do you want to go forward for the next assignment? It seems like we will each make a contribution (though the Turnitin.com site Dr. Ogg posted) and then move it to the page. I'm not sure if we wait until the contribution is accepted before moving it to the Wiki page or not...I can ask Dr. Ogg that. Do you want to each take a section or two and make an initial contribution? Then we both can comment on the progress on the group page. Hi Rebecca, that is exactly what I was thinking...that we should each work on a section or two. Response to your question about images[edit]

Hi, Jason,

Very nice image!!

Here is a template that you can use whenever you want to put an image into a WP article: [[File:FILENAME|thumb|RIGHT/LEFT|SIZEpx|CAPTION]]. For example, the following code produces the image to the right:

[[File:Andromeda annotated.png|thumb|right|200px|Andromeda as it appears in the night sky, with the superimposed figure.]]

Make sure you put the wiki code before the text in the article that you want it to appear alongside.

Regarding moving the image to Wikimedia Commons, you can do that, or not, if you want. Because of the license you've given it, someone else might also do it, without even telling you about it. If you would like to upload it yourself, it is very easy. Start here: Wikimedia Commons: Upload your own work.

Final Updates to Article[edit]

Hi Jason - I think the article is looking great. The reviewers did give some good feedback and some things to change. Overall, based on the reviewers, I had a few suggestions. I wanted to see what you thought before changing anything too big:

I think we should move the Viruses section towards the end. A lot of reviewers didn't love this section (I think it should be in there) but it might be better received if it lies AFTER the eukaryotes / prokaryotes section.
I really like your input for a separate 'Relevant Research' section and I definitely think we need to keep it. The alphabetizing seemed like a good suggestion.
I'm still looking for some general images and will hopefully have a good one to add by the end of this unit.

I agree that the article is shaping up very nicely. I have no problems with moving the Virus section after the Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes sections. I noticed that one reviewer had a concern with us defining extrachromosomal DNA as being any DNA outside of the nucleus (since bacteria and viruses don't have nuclei) so we may want to tweak the definiton ever so slighty to account for that. I will make a note of it in the prokaryote section if you would like to mention it in the virus section. I will be working on the page on Sunday or Monday of this week, and in the process I'll fix the headings as suggested by Klortho and I'll get the relevant research section cleaned up and alphabetized. I too will continue to look for some usable graphics- it's rather difficult with the fear of plagiarism all around. I do think though that we both can be very proud of the improvements that we've made to the article thus far, thanks! Jfitz1974 (talk) 01:35, 24 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Also, would you like me to add something the biotechnology section, or do you have something ready for it, or do you think we should just leave that section out? For now, maybe add what you have on bacterial plasmids to the prokaryote section. After I got some comments that the viral section felt "out of place" I have to rethink some of my biotech information to try to stay more on topic. I have some good information on inheritance of extrachromosomal DNA also - explaining how it is passed down etc. I wonder if that has a place? I'll experiment where to put it.
