DYK Nomination[edit]

Hi. I've nominated Transmission Electron Microscopy DNA Sequencing, an article you worked on, for consideration to appear on the Main Page as part of Wikipedia:Did you know. You can see the hook for the article here, where you can improve it if you see fit. Jayron32 01:58, 25 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please avoid edit warring. I would revert my edits myself if you have read my edit summary and provided an adequate explanation. As to the image, see this. Materialscientist (talk) 04:20, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting. I haven't imaged DNA myself and thought there is some heavy atom staining in File:RibosomaleTranskriptionsEinheit.jpg visible as dark dots. I understand your concerns, but still believe that in absence of a better alternative this image is usable, perhaps in another article part (upper) and with a clarifying caption. Do you have a suggestion for that? Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 04:48, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I might be utterly wrong in pushing this picture through because I've just realized that I don't fully understand what it shows and how exactly it relates to the article. Do you? Can you point to an internet example of an image which would fit to the article? This free-access article might be useful to the article. The priority for me is to make it accessible to a broad audience. Another question/request - there are multiple company links in the article, one is dead and some go to irrelevant pages. Sooner or later someone will remove them as spam. Would it possible to relink them to the actual TEM DNA sequencing pages? Regards. Materialscientist (talk) 06:50, 26 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Materialscientist: There is no heavy atom staining in File:RibosomaleTranskriptionsEinheit.jpg. The dark spots are ribosomes that are transcribing RNA from DNA. Since this technology is still in development, only limited TEM DNA sequencing images have been released. ZS Genetics has some limited images at http://www.zsgenetics.com/index.html, but these are copyrighted and the article has a link to this page. Halcyon has released no images.

The only relevant aspect of this image is that it is a TEM image of DNA. However, the inclusion of ribosomes (protein/RNA) and RNA molecules in the picture is misleading, and others may mistake, like you, the dots as heavy atom labeling.

If you could point to a proper image (upon cursory look, I haven't found such - only talks), we could include it to the article even if copyrighted - wikipedia allows that, and there is a good excuse of having no free alternative, but it should be a high-resolution (CS-corrected microscope) image.
