GMO and pesticide related articles[edit]

I recently saw your Wikipedia:Wiki_Ed/Ohio_University/Writing_in_the_Life_Sciences_(Fall_2016) course and noticed some students had chosen Genetically modified maize and Colony collapse disorder as articles to work on. I'm not sure what you plan to have students do over the semester, but I wanted to give you a heads up that these are controversial topics amongst Wikipedia users that have gotten bad enough that we needed to impose discretionary sanctions related to content, behavior, etc. on topics related to genetically modified organisms and pesticides, especially on the scientific consensus related to GMOs.[1] I don't want to discourage student interest in these topics, but they can be difficult areas for a first time editor to try to navigate through. I would still encourage these students to pursue the topics, but if any questions come up along the way (such as following WP:MEDRS and relying on secondary sources rather than primary literature), I'm happy to give some guidance either on my user talk page or at either of the articles since I watchlist them.
