ArbCom 2023 Elections voter message

[edit]

Hello! Voting in the 2023 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 11 December 2023. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2023 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:50, 28 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Orania first sentence

[edit]

The first sentence of Orania was decided in an RFC, here. It cannot be changed substantially from that (particularly removing the words "white separatist", which were central to the question the RFC asked) without another RFC. You participated extensively in the RFC, and are therefore aware of that "white separatist" is the consensus version of the lead's first sentence; why have you removed it repeatedly? --Aquillion (talk) 01:00, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]

a) Orania is an Afrikaner only town. Not a whites only town. If it was a whites only town they would be open to whites from England or America, they are not. If anything they should be called Afrikaner separatist.
b) Afrikaners are not white. DNA analysis clearly shows that they have European, African and Asian origins.
c) They do not describe themselves as white, but as Afrikaners or Boers.
d) "White separatist" is a loaded word, could even considered a slur with very negative connotations. Wikipedia does not condone dehumanizing language to describe vulnerable minorities. Johnmars3 (talk) 06:44, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As I recall, you raised all those arguments during the RFC and they were rejected; WP:RSes don't agree with your analysis. Our responsibility as an encyclopedia is just to summarize what reliable sources say. But either way, ultimately, language in articles like those are decided by consensus, and the 2022 WP:RFC made the consensus plain. If you disagree you can start another RFC on talk (the old one was two years ago, after all) but I don't think it's likely that it's going to change when the sources are so clear-cut. --Aquillion (talk) 17:29, 17 April 2024 (UTC)[reply]
