Film

Hello there, got the message on my talk page. I was trying to do a film or production timeline list for character appearances as there was already one for Video games (template: video game timeline) can you help me with the film or production timeline thanks Ethan169 (talk) 08:00, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

You should be able to use Timeline of release years with a customized title. I created a demonstration in your sandbox showing that the template could be used for something like the first appearance of characters in a show or series: User:Ethan169/sandbox. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:14, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

Buzz Lightyear

Thanks i done the list for Buzz Lightyear can you also create a page for Rex from toy story he is Main enough and deserves his own page. Ethan169 (talk) 14:49, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

A draft page already exists at Draft:Rex (Toy Story). I encourage you to work on that page. Nice work on the Buzz timeline. Please fix the links to Coco and Small Fry, which do not point to the right articles. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:58, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
I fixed it can you undraft the rex page and make it public i will fix it up. Ethan169 (talk) 16:09, 6 January 2023 (UTC)
The draft article needs references to reliable sources. Detailed instructions for creating a new article and getting it moved from the Draft space to regular article space are at Help:Your first article. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:32, 6 January 2023 (UTC)

1982 Haryana Legislative Assembly election

Hello!

Thanks so much for reverting my edit to 1982 Haryana Legislative Assembly election. I believe I was trying to revert the changes in this edit, but didn't see you'd fixed most of them already, except for a single stray Italic text. Of course I then accidentally restored the wrong version... Anyways, thanks for noticing :) ~ Eejit43 (talk) 01:09, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

You're welcome. I am also glad when people fix my mistakes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:11, 7 January 2023 (UTC)

Updated. The documentation needs updating as well, and it is not protected, so you can do that yourself. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:04, 8 January 2023 (UTC)

Okay, I sort of got it with something like AfC category navbar, but what possible documentation is necessary for User access levels? Primefac (talk) 17:46, 10 January 2023 (UTC)

If it's a page-content template with no parameters, a short note about why the page exists in Template space and where it is used, along with a category, is typically enough. It is helpful to have some bare-bones explanation so that the page doesn't look like something that someone created in the wrong namespace or for a reason that contradicts the template-space guidelines.
I have been shoveling the dung-heap that is Wikipedia:Database reports/Uncategorized templates, and I have found hundreds of templates that were one-off creations that should not exist, or that should be moved into User or Wikipedia space, or that are simply inscrutable. I have documented a few of these, moved others to appropriate locations, and nominated many for deletion. I do not have the expertise to categorize or create documentation for every page that I do not understand, so I am shifting some of the dung into other piles in the hope that more knowledgeable editors, like yourself, will be able to clarify matters. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:20, 10 January 2023 (UTC)
Fair enough, thanks for the explanation :-) Primefac (talk) 08:35, 11 January 2023 (UTC)

Hyphenation

Not sure how it being an adjective changes things, it's still a compound modifier with 'then' modifying 'boyfriend' and the combination modifying the name. I don't see anything at MOS:HYPHEN that suggests it would not be hyphenated. I would hyphenate future in that case too. CWenger (^@) 00:16, 15 January 2023 (UTC)

Nobody would write "the future-president Jane Smith" (for "Jane Smith, who would in the future become president") or "her Italian-boyfriend John Brown" (for "John Brown, her boyfriend, who is Italian"). The word "then" works the same way in this context. It is confusing because "then" is usually an adverb, so our brains get stuck in the wrong frame. I linked to two mainstream style guides in my edit summaries at Rachel Bilson. Feel free to bring it up at Wikipedia talk:Manual of Style and ping me; I don't see a detailed discussion about it in the archives, but it is a difficult topic to search for. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:09, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
I would not hyphenate "her Italian-boyfriend John Brown" because 'Italian' could just as easily modify 'John Brown' as 'boyfriend', But like I said I would probably hyphenate "the future-president Jane Smith", although I admit there is no potential ambiguity so that's probably why it is usually omitted. You could very well be correct, I'm just trying to understand how one would formulate a rule for this case. It's not the adjective-noun compound modifier case that doesn't require a hyphen because we have short-story writer in the MoS. CWenger (^@) 01:44, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
When in doubt, consult style guides. Some style guides are hundreds of pages; MOS tries to be concise. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:06, 15 January 2023 (UTC)
Just a heads-up, I am planning to restore the hyphen. It seems like many reputable sources use it according to the comment at the MoS talk page, and we have only found a single style guide that says to omit it. CWenger (^@) 14:46, 25 January 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for the note. I do not follow MOS talk pages because they make me crazy. I have posted a follow-up note there. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:03, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Duplicate Args

Whack!

You've been whacked with a wet trout.

Don't take this too seriously. Someone just wants to let you know that you did something silly.

remember to use preview! Colorado and Alabama had duplicate args introduced. Zackmann (Talk to me/What I been doing) 01:44, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Yum, trout! Thanks for fixing my errors. That template's documentation was a disaster. The editor who did the merge did not tidy it up very well. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:50, 25 January 2023 (UTC)

Signpost quote template

[moved to Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/Templates/Inline long quote.]
Hi Jonesey, note [1]; the previous edits changed the appearance of many old Signpost articles that were designed to have background shading. It also led to multi-para quotes being broken up. It just didn't look right, and given the potentially large number of articles involved, going back many years, this seems like the easiest solution. Best, --Andreas JN466 15:24, 26 January 2023 (UTC) [moved to Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/Templates/Inline long quote.]

Template:ASEA License Built Rolling Stock has been nominated for deletion. You are invited to comment on the discussion at the entry on the Templates for discussion page. This is because it now duplicates Template:ASEA Export Electric Locomotives. XAM2175 (T) 12:32, 30 January 2023 (UTC)

Trödel box div

Hi, I see you added an end div tag on User:Trödel/box the other day. Its placement, while clear on that page, is throwing a missing div on this talk page Any issues with swapping the div and noinclude end tags, or is that order intended? Thanks, Zinnober9 (talk) 23:41, 5 February 2023 (UTC)

Yes, the order is intended. This template requires the person inserting it to provide their own closing div tag, which apparently was not done, or perhaps the div tag was later removed (I don't care to dig through the page's history, since the problem was easily fixable). – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:59, 5 February 2023 (UTC)
Good to know. Hadn't run across this before, and since you had been the last one to edit the box, thought I should ask instead of adjusting. Thanks. Zinnober9 (talk) 00:29, 6 February 2023 (UTC)

EPA image issue

I just wanted to express my frustration at your reversion of my edit, which somehow I missed in my watchlist. Since you were an active participant in the VPT discussion, you should have been well aware that the problem was not fixed, so you should either have not reverted my edit, or should have undone your edit as soon as you realized it. When the Phabricator ticket was resolved this morning, I went back to check the page and only then noticed your reversion. I guess I'm not sure what to say – would you please be more advertent in the future? Thank you. jhawkinson (talk) 16:07, 8 February 2023 (UTC)

BOTLIKE edits to very old pages

Would you please get a bot to fix linter errors on very old pages. Please do not do WP:BOTLIKE editing from a non-bot account. SmokeyJoe (talk) 06:53, 16 February 2023 (UTC)

There are multiple bots fixing Linter errors, but they are not able to fix all kinds of errors. If I find a page that has only errors that are being fixed by currently approved bots, I usually leave it alone. I review every one of my edits before saving; some of them take many minutes to perform and verify. If you see a consistent pattern in my editing that a bot should be able to fix without errors or false positives, please let me know. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:00, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
Here's a typical recent edit of an old page; I fixed a half-dozen errors that a bot would be unlikely to be able to fix, leaving the obsolete font tags for the two or three bots that are currently working on them. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:08, 16 February 2023 (UTC)
You should not be doing this edits with a non bot account. These pages are important records. They are barely ever viewed, and so your assertion "Fix Linter errors. More needed" is dubious. By fixing them, you are adding noise of random non-bot accounts fiddling with important records. This fiddling needs reviewing. Already, that page had three MalnadachBot edits, three being a problem that has been called out and is being addressed. Your non-bot edits are much worse. When I look at individual edits, such as your adding </del> to unclosed <del> tags, I do not agree that these would be unlikely to be fixable by a bot.
To the extent that old pages have defined problems that need fixing, please have a bot approved to do it, so that you do not pollute Special:RecentChanges or other's watchlists, or violate WP:BOTLIKE. If you do use a non bot account for repeatedly fixing common problems, you establish a precedent that any editor may do this, and any editor may do it poorly. SmokeyJoe (talk) 01:14, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
Human editors have fixed Linter errors on hundreds of thousands of pages since 2018. There is a half-decade of precedent for these edits, and there has been plenty of time for bots to be developed to fix bot-fixable errors. To my knowledge, there have been four or five bots deployed to fix errors. During the development of these bots, repeated discussions have narrowed their focus because some proposed edits were subject to WP:CONTEXTBOT. If you have some foolproof code that would be able to determine how to fix misnested tags without false positives, please post a note about it at Wikipedia talk:Linter. If the code is viable, someone will probably be able to use it to deploy a bot, saving me and other human editors a lot of trouble. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:16, 17 February 2023 (UTC)
In this example, a bot cannot determine that striking was supposed to be from line 27 to 40. This page was giving Special:LintErrors/html5-misnesting, a category of error where most things that can be fixed by bots have already been fixed. There was about 130k total errors, which bots had reduced to 25k. There are still 20k left (1.4k in project space), which human editors are slowly working through. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 04:47, 17 February 2023 (UTC)

Mention templates

I noticed that you tried to ping another user in an edit summary. As noted at Help:Notifications, mention templates don't work in edit summaries. You have to use a normal wikilink in an edit summary, e.g. User:xyz. Schwede66 02:23, 18 February 2023 (UTC)

Talk page div

Hi, I see you nowiki'd the end div here on Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United States regions/temp the other day. That box is called on Template talk:Regions of the United States and is claiming a missing end tag div error over there. I'm commenting here as I'm not seeing a div error with the WikiProject code prior to your addition of the nowiki, (I tested it both in my sandbox and the Wikipedia sandbox and both were clean) and I'm not sure I should just add an end div to the Template Talk page after the call, or if the nowiki isn't actually needed. Was this one of those bizarre ghost issues that only exists in some namespaces but doesn't appear when tested elsewhere, or was it causing issues in other places where the box was called? No complaints of the nowiki'ing, just trying to understand the reason for it, and how I should proceed for the Temp talk issue. Cheers, Zinnober9 (talk) 22:17, 1 March 2023 (UTC)

This version of the page had a missing </div> tag, which is why I added one. The div at the top of the page was not closed. Each page that transcludes the "/temp" page, like Wikipedia talk:WikiProject United States regions/1, will also need a closing div tag added at the end of the page. The reason that I put the closing tag inside <noinclude>...</noinclude> (not nowiki) tags is that if I had not, the green box would not have wrapped the entire page content in the transcluding pages. If this all sounds like gibberish, there are literally millions of easier errors to work on. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:27, 1 March 2023 (UTC)
Ah, so the green wrapping is wanted. Ok. I've seen so many unclosed divs from happy holiday mass mailings where the background color spilled to everything after that I hadn't considered it was wanted thing. Good to know. I'll add the end tag to the bottom of the Template Talk page with a note and be done with it. Thank you for the insight, Zinnober9 (talk) 00:23, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
That normally happens when somebody copypastes from the template source instead of WP:SUBSTing the template. Every Christmas/new year I clean up a bunch of missing </div> or missing |}. I think that they are assuming that they only need to copy down to the line above the <noinclude> without appreciating that stuff on the same line might also be important. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 08:40, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
Yes, and sometimes the template itself was broken, resulting in every proper substitution having Linter errors. Back in the early days of Linter cleanup in 2018, I tidied up hundreds of subst-only and transcluded templates and userboxes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:22, 2 March 2023 (UTC)
The most widespread proliferation of Lint errors from proper substitution is 71 and 72 in User:MalnadachBot/Task 12/51-100. They were in 330k+ AFD pages each of which was transcluded in a daily AFD log page, totaling 660k+ errors. This and a lot of other broken massmessages makes me think that subst should be used as little as possible. ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ (talk) 15:08, 2 March 2023 (UTC)

Thanks very much for your attention to detail and helpful contributions at Ian Gibbons (biochemist). Since he was British, should we use that date convention of Day Month Year? Princessa Unicorn (talk) 17:34, 6 March 2023 (UTC)

See Wikipedia:Overview of date formatting guidelines. I do not have an opinion one way or another; I looked for the dominant format and made it consistent. The dominant format prior to my edit may not be the right format per the guideline. Discuss on the article's talk page if it is not obvious which of the two formats to use. Once a decision is made, all dates in the article prose should be changed to match the chosen format. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:37, 6 March 2023 (UTC)
I agree with you that it should be standardized throughout the article. I also don't really care too much either way. I'll start a discussion on the talk page about it, happy to have your feedback there if you wish! Princessa Unicorn (talk) 18:21, 7 March 2023 (UTC)

Regarding my edit of this article that you reverted: [3] As someone unfamiliar with Linter, I don't know what you mean by your edit summary, "Caused Linter image option error." I assume that it was flagged by Wikipedia:Linter but the message does not suggest to me how I might fix it. I think my edit was consistent with the guidance of Template:As of. If so, I wonder if that guidance might be improved, or if a bug report is warranted? I note that in 2017, cscott posted "Parsing of captions for media is fragile" in Linter.[4] That raises the possibility that my edit was fine, it is Linter that is broken. Best wishes, Walter Siegmund (talk) 17:09, 8 March 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Wsiegmund: The problem is indeed the asof but not both of them. It can't be used in |alt=, because alt text must be unformatted plain text (see WP:ALT#Basics), and the 2016 template adds some HTML markup, specifically
<a class="external text" href="https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Usage_of_electronic_cigarettes&amp;action=edit">[update]</a>
plus a category, the first of which breaks the HTML for the alt text. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:46, 8 March 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, Redrose65 for the cogent explanation. I added Asof to caption but not to |alt=. --Walter Siegmund (talk) 00:37, 13 March 2023 (UTC)

Question about T170874 - statistics about template generated issues

Jonesey95, in working on T170874 now that the linter table has a discrete linter_template field. I can create a special page that displays lint errors due to template error or template usage error. The caveat I have run into is that the query time to run the report is many second to produce a top 10, and more for the top 50 templates involved in a lint error. Because the report takes a long time to run on the database, I know the DBA's will not like it, and require some rate limiting on page refresh at a minimum, and more likely as Daniel Kinsler recommended, require me to have the report run off a background job and have the page contents be cached somehow on a timer or with TTL on demand. This later solution would lead to some delay in the updating of the totals and pages affected error counts in the report. But since this is such a specialized report, probably with just a handful of editors like yourself finding it useful, would a cached, maybe hourly report be okay.

separate question I have is beyond making the template name a clickable link to its page, would a clickable link to the first wikipage usage of it also be useful. How the special page works and its features being evaluated.

Thanks Shannon SBailey (WMF) (talk) 22:21, 22 March 2023 (UTC)

A report with hourly updates would be great. Such a report would need to account for Linter errors generated in transclusions of any kind of page, not just pages in Template space, since User and Project and other kinds of pages are often transcluded. As for the separate question, a link to an example page with an error would be helpful. If you want to mock something up, even if it's just a top 50 report based on cached data, I'll be happy to provide feedback. I appreciate you working on this; the major transclusion-related errors are mostly cleared up on en.WP, but I do find Template-space edge cases occasionally, and there are many hundreds of User and Project pages with 3 to 5 transclusions that have not yet been fixed. Commons and other WPs still have a ton of pages where errors are caused by transclusions.
One thing to keep in mind is that there are multiple kinds of transclusion-related Linter errors. One kind is where there is a fundamental error in the transcluded page itself, like <div>bold text with no closing tag</div>, where the transcluded page will cause the error in every transclusion. Another kind is where there is something like {}, where a Linter error is caused only when the parameter is missing or contains ' markup at the beginning or end. Yet another kind is where mismatched tags are caused by the results of conditional statements like #if. It's a nest of snakes. A demonstration report will determine whether your proposed code finds useful links for us gnomes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:51, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
For reference, there is an old report of pages containing Linter errors that are transcluded 5 or more times here: User:Jonesey95/linter transclusions. Many of the pages listed on the report have been fixed, but hundreds of them are still causing Linter errors when they are transcluded. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:03, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Just looking at the report link, I am curious how you captured this data, do you have access to Quarry to run SQL against enwiki? SBailey (WMF) (talk) 16:58, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
I've been lazy about getting access to Quarry/SQL and learning it. It would probably be useful to me. The report came from this request. A refined version of that report showing the number of transclusions along with the number of Linter errors on the identified page would be useful, and it might be the best that we can do in this line of inquiry (see below). – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:10, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
Glad this type of report is desirable and even if constrained to hourly or longer refresh updates is still adequate. So far I have created a test patch that provides some info just as a hack and this latest SQL query produces this result for test2wiki:
linter_template pages_using_template total_errors
Template:Stub 160 160
Template:Dokumentation 78 148
Template:Documentation 79 103
Template:Orphan 61 61
Template:QS-Medizin. 32 32
Template:High-risk 25 27
Template:Peter_Bowman/odm-czas-hiszp 2 26
Template:Tld. 4 26
Template:Infobox_Country 21 21
Template:Header 8 20
Showing 1 to 10 of 10 entries
In this report you can see whether a template has a one to one relationship with how many pages are transcluding it, or whether a few pages have multiple errors using the same template. This ratio probably hints at whether the template itself has an error versus the pages transcluding it are causing the error, though this ratio is not definitive in helping narrow down the source of the error. The link I will be adding to first page in error will use the source range info provided by Parsoid, which should be mostly accurate in a variety of scenarios. Unfortunately, this report will not cover errors that currently report as multi-part-template-block. I need to look further into how that should be reported separately.
The next iteration of the preliminary patch will get the page titles from the linter_page ID and prepend that column as a clickable edit link that highlights to range Parsoid determined, but that requires accessing the page table, making the query even slower, though probably not by much.
Thank you for your comments and desire to be part of this new report ensuring it is most valuable and effective. SBailey (WMF) (talk) 16:53, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
I don't know how test2wiki maps to en.WP, but I suspect, if I may speak frankly, that the above report does not (yet?) contain useful information. The current Linter error pages try to say if an error occurs in a transcluded page, but since we have fixed most of the template pages that contained actual errors, that data is not reliable for finding transclusion-related errors. I suspect that all of the errors within Template:Documentation in the above report, for example, are errors in the wikitext used inside parameters of a Documentation template on a specific page, not errors in Template:Documentation itself. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:10, 23 March 2023 (UTC)
My efforts are to satisfy the description in https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T170874
"Sometimes, a small number of templates are responsible for a large number of individual linter issues that are reported by Linter. In order to enable editors to not get overwhelmed by the counts, it might be useful to provide additional summary statistics:
How many linter issues in a category come from templates, and from top-level page itself? This statistic gives a quick scale of the effort involved.
For those pages with template-generated linter issues, some sort of ordered listing of templates by most # of issues so that editors can address those first."
The new Linter search UI I recently deployed now allows for searching only pages which contain template related errors, and if a single page title is used with the "Filter by template state" selector set to [With Templates] will provide all the linter errors on that page where a template is involved. But the number of pages in error versus the total number of errors associated with a specific template is not available through Special Pages: Linter Errors and would be provided by a new subpage I would be adding.
If most errors currently in enwiki are due to a page misusing a correct template, and not an error in the template itself, then the ratio of total_errors to page_using_template not being 1:1 is indicative of the few pages misusing the template.
If there is little value in this information, even with clickable links to the first page with the error and the template page as well, along with the two error statistics, then either additional info would make it useful, or it doesn't need to be created anymore due to other recently released search features being adequate.
I am glad to get feedback on the utility of a proposed feature and adjust it. If Parsoid needs to produce other info that it currently isn't generating about template related errors so that a more valuable report can be generated, that would be helpful.
Best, Shannon SBailey (WMF) (talk) 14:54, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
If you are able to generate a report similar to the one you posted above, but for en.WP, I will be able to tell you whether it is useful or not. The report should look for transcluded pages from all namespaces, not just template space. For example, if a userbox living in User space contains a Linter error and it is transcluded in 8 pages, the report could show the name of the transcluded page, the number of pages transcluding it, the number of Linter errors on the transcluded page, and a link to an example page, like this:
Transcluded page Number of transclusions Number of Linter errors in transcluded page Estimated Linter errors in transclusions Example transcluding page
User:Sahara4u/Navbar 8 29 232 User:Sahara4u/Templates
If that report does not work, an enhanced version of the quarry query that I linked to, turned into a regular report, would probably satisfy the feature request. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:38, 24 March 2023 (UTC)
Jonesey, yes I think I can gather this information from the existing linter table. There is no reason I cannot gather template info from all namespaces at the same time so that is not a limitation. I will get back to you with a better sample report from enwiki of top 50 errors by total linter errors formatted as your example defines.
To make sure that I understand your example, is the [number of linter errors] column the amount of errors that the example transcluding page has for all linter errors, or just for errors generated due to the transcluded template page?
Your input has been very enlightening, thanks SBailey (WMF) (talk) 14:27, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
My intent was that "Number of Linter errors" would refer to the number of errors in the page named in the left column. If you click that link, you will see that User:Sahara4u/Navbar has 29 errors (until one of my talk page stalkers fixes it). – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:02, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
Excellent, ok, got it, developing query and measuring performance, getting input from DBA on their concerns and how I should approach making this type of report production friendly. SBailey (WMF) (talk) 19:34, 27 March 2023 (UTC)
After some exploration, the ability to have a template page lint error count and a number of times it has been transcluded in the report I am working on is proving a bit difficult. The number of lint errors the template page possess cannot be determined easily as the linter table does not (yet) mark linter records for templates as a template itself, so my query cannot (easily) determine that some linter records are in template page versus a normal page. I was exploring using the templatelinks table which has a from page ID, a from page namespace ID and target (template) link page ID, which I might use to match against the linter_page ID value in a join to see that page is being transcluded, but that table may not be reliably updated as the wiki is updated, pages moved, deleted etc. SBailey (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 7 April 2023 (UTC)
Maybe Cryptic would be willing to give you some pointers. They were able to whip up quarry:query/65736 pretty quickly. Also, quarry:query/31876 shows how to get the Linter error count on a page. So in the table above, you should be able to use a version of query 65736 to get the first two columns, then code from query 31876 to get the number of Linter errors on the page. The fourth column is just math. I don't know how to get the fifth column, but you seemed relatively confident above that you could generate it; it is purely optional. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:22, 8 April 2023 (UTC)

George Hamilton of Greenlaw and Roscrea

Dear Jonesey95. Thanks for your attention to the article George Hamilton of Greenlaw and Roscrea. The use of italics in the timeline was indeed confusing. I fixed this so that all timeline entries concerning the subject are in Roman and those for background events are in italics. Do you feel that this needs to be explained? With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 16:40, 15 April 2023 (UTC)

Yes. Any non-standard use of italics (link to the Manual of Style) needs to be explained. Also see MOS:DATEFORMAT for guidance on fixing the dates in that table, and MOS:DONTHIDE for an explanation of why the table should not be collapsed by default. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:20, 16 April 2023 (UTC)
Dear Jonesey95. Thank you very much for your quick response. I see that you are an expert on the interpretation of the various guidelines such as the MOS. I want to do things right but am still learning. To get this timeline table right is important to me as I have created about a hundred of them in various biographical articles on people of the 17th century in Ireland, e.g. Charles MacCarthy, 1st Viscount Muskerry. Besides, I use the format of the timeline since a couple of years and user Twofingered Typist had copyedited Donough MacCarty, 1st Earl of Clancarty in February 2021 and had left the timeline table unchanged with all the defects listed by you.
Regarding MOS:ITALIC, I have added a remark in the header. I could also have added Efns to the concerned column headers, or expressed the distinction in another way or dropped the distinction entirely. I am not sure what would be best.
Regarding MOS:DATE, the offending date format was chosen because the rows are ordered chronologically, so the year is the most important and was therefore given first. I have changed it now in the article in question trying to make it comply. Should it be "24 Mar 1603" or "24 Mar 1603"? I still think the table was more readable before. Is this really an improvement?
Regarding MOS:DONTHIDE, if navboxes are allowed to be collapsed, why not a timeline table? I have changed it now to be displayed, but I find it takes too much place and looks too important. Is this an improvement?
Should I go ahead and do this now on all of these timelines? Or should I just remove all theses timelines? I found them useful when I was working on these articles. Obviously, paper encyclopedias do not have tables, but I thought Wikipedia being online could well have them. With many thanks for all your efforts, best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 11:07, 17 April 2023 (UTC)

Hello @Jonesey95, I am once again reaching to you for help. Please can you locate lint errors on here and help me fix them? Page information shows Missing end tag: 1, Obsolete HTML tags: 1, and Stripped tags: 1. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:38, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Fixed with this change. In general, span tags can't wrap multiple lines of text. You need to use div tags for that. I also replaced an obsolete <center>...</center> tag with updated markup. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:53, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
ohh wow. You are so amazing. Thanks for the help. ─ The Aafī (talk) 17:59, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Once again @Jonesey95: What are misc. issues? For example see m:History and Timeline of Deoband Community Wikimedia. The images in 2023 section are not even aligning properly. ─ The Aafī (talk) 19:14, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
The best way to learn about these errors is to follow the links at Special:LintErrors. I fixed a template that the History page was using, and now it has no errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:33, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
Not sure if it is solved entirely. I am still getting (misc-tidy-replacement-issues) errors on this. ─ The Aafī (talk) 20:54, 24 April 2023 (UTC)
It can take some time, even a few days, for those report pages to catch up if the page is not modified. I added a space to the page's wikitext without changing how it displays, and that made the error report refresh. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:06, 24 April 2023 (UTC)

Syntax question

Have a question for you. Does Wikipedia prefer to <b>? Made a protected page change request, and got asked this question, and I do not know the official answer. They asked "Should we be using <b></b> (and the like)? Won't the wiki ignore those since we have wiki markup?". Both regularly work and display correctly for me in edits, with no lint errors, and this is the first time hearing of this.

Was proposing

<font color="#006400">frood</font>
to
<b style="color:#006400">frood</b>

My intuition is there is no issue, but

<span style="color:#006400">frood</span>

is an easy replacement if there is such an issue.

Thoughts? Zinnober9 (talk) 20:44, 22 May 2023 (UTC)

Both of those are the same, functionally, and the use of <b>...</b> tags is common throughout some parts of Wikipedia. There are many ways to make text appear as bold. See Help:HTML in wikitext for some explanation. The "b style" markup is less common, so some editors may not understand it or may think that it is an error. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:02, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
Thank you, that was what I thought. Their question caught me offguard and while everything I knew from experience was telling me they are equivalent, I know there are some markup oddities here and there. Just wanted to check in with you and make sure I wasn't incorrect before replying to them, since you are aware of a wider array of markup peculiarities. Thanks, Zinnober9 (talk) 08:11, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
The <b>...</b> tags and ... markup are equivalent, the latter is one character shorter and also commoner. But when used in conjunction with <span>...</span>, there may be redundancy which may be possible to eliminate. The span element on its own does nothing. It groups one or more characters together so that the same style=, class=, id= (or any other global attribute) may be applied to the enclosed text. Since all of the attributes supported by the span element are also supported by all other HTML elements (without exception), and
<span style="color:#006400">frood</span>
is equivalent to
<b><span style="color:#006400">frood</span></b>
that style= attribute may be moved from the inner element to the outer
<b style="color:#006400"><span>frood</span></b>
without change of effect, meaning that the do-nothing <span>...</span> pair may then be removed, and so it follows that
<b style="color:#006400">frood</b>
is also equivalent, besides being the shortest (and simplest) form. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 14:09, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
I've gotten so that I prefer <b style="color:#006400">frood</b> over the wiki markup for bolding with a style change. <b style has fewer "parts" and can't be confused with italics as the wikimarkup can be. I've seen some messes where people used to correctly bold and italics something (a signature let's say), and while that part is all correct, they dropped an italics elsewhere in their paragraph, so it steals from the correct section causing a chain reaction of stolen and "misnested" bolding/italics issues when it's only one missing end tag. Zinnober9 (talk) 15:50, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
Don't forget about <span style="color:#006400;font-weight:bold;">frood</span> and I'm sure there a few other options as well. -- WOSlinker (talk) 20:20, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
Indeed. That's one of the variants I was thinking of when I wrote There are many ways to make text appear as bold above. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:36, 23 May 2023 (UTC)
It's longer, and has no semantic meaning. Semantics are important, we can't rely on pure visual appearance alone, otherwise we could build an entire page using <a>...</a>, <img />, <span>...</span> and almost nothing else. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:58, 23 May 2023 (UTC)

How to userfy a template?

Hi Jonesey95,

I saw your note on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Templates_for_discussion/Log/2023_May_31#Template:Symptoms_man and couldn't find any documentation on how to userfy a template? Would you be able to point me to relevant documentation, please?

Thanks,
cmɢʟeeτaʟκ 18:11, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

See WP:USERFY. That is jargon for moving the page to an editor's User space. To do it yourself, go to the page, click the Move link in your Tools menu (this appears somewhere in the upper right corner of your page, depending on which skin you are using), then select "User" in the first box under "New title" and put "Cmglee/Symptoms man template" in the second box. See Wikipedia:Moving a page for detailed instructions. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:15, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Template categorization

Hi again Jonesey. I have recently noticed on a couple occasions that you have created /doc pages for templates shortly after I had categorized the template itself. ([7], Template:2019 Pan American Games profile/doc; [8] Template:Constitutional law of Wales/doc). This resulted in the pages being tagged as uncategorized despite just getting a category. I have fixed both the cases mentioned above by moving the cats to the /doc pages.[9][10]

As I continue to categorize uncategorized templates, should I be removing them from both User:Jonesey95/sandbox3 and Wikipedia:Database reports/Uncategorized templates as I go? It would help prevent any trip ups like above, though personally I do see benefit in leaving them be until the next update because it's more likely my edits get a second set of eyes on them before the templates disappear; you know, just in case my categorization is not optimal or I just get it plain wrong somehow. --DB1729talk 17:08, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Those were both my mistake. I sometimes load up a batch of pages from /sandbox3 and then work on them over a period of time, so if something happens four minutes before my edit, I might miss it. I have seen some of your changes upon loading a batch of pages, and when I see them, I close the page and do not edit it. I will try to do a better job of checking my saved pages for errors. You are very welcome to remove batches of processed pages from my /sandbox3 page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:15, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
Alright, maybe if I clear them from your sandbox only, as I work through them, might be best for now. Thanks. --DB1729talk 17:23, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
That sounds good. In a few weeks, we should not need the /sandbox3 page, because all of the templates will be listed on a single report page. I created my page only because I wanted to alphabetize and sort the whole list at once. – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:30, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
I see. Ok that's good. I'm done clearing the ones I've catted. There were a lot from earlier last week (maybe something to do with Xtools being down). I was going to tell you that the low-hanging fruit from the database report and your sandbox was becoming harder to find, so I will soon shift my focus more to the tagged uncategorized templates at Category:Uncategorized pages. --DB1729talk 18:40, 31 May 2023 (UTC)
That sounds like a good plan. I am still finding many templates in the /sandbox3 list that should be deleted or moved to User or Wikipedia space instead of categorized. If you see a TFD nomination on any of the templates in the list, you can skip them. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:29, 31 May 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for discussing. The article in question is Todd Sickafoose. Please read MOS:IMAGEQUALITY, and compare the two photos. A good-quality representation of the article's subject is much more important than recentness. The newer photo shows the person smaller and blurrier. Hi Jonesey95. I was perusing through the Special:Linterrors page and found Template:Userxx as a potential multi-colon escape candidate. I've been watching that specific category for about 7 days now and it wasn't listed when I started watching it. Strangely, the space that you removed from the template seemed to cause it to report the error. I didn't want to undo the edit since you have more experience with templates, but I also wonder if this should be a bug report to mediawiki. Thanks. Inomyabcs (talk) 05:46, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

I removed the space to see if the Linter error would go away. I think that something changed in the MediaWiki code recently to make this page appear in the list; it looks like a false positive to me. The best place for this discussion is WT:Linter. – Jonesey95 (talk) 05:48, 8 June 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. Didn't know about WT:Linter. Inomyabcs (talk) 05:53, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Jonesey95,

Please do not tag drafts early for CSD G13. Now we have to wait another 6 months before this draft is eligible again which will be in December 2023. And this draft has been around since 2020 and been declined 12 times! I was looking forward to it being deleted tomorrow but, alas, that is not to be. Liz Read! Talk! 05:55, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

I tagged it in good faith as a page that had not been edited in six months, which was the case (7 December 2022 to 7 June 2023). Please also see the CSD criteria, which read Adding a CSD template to a page does not reset the six-month clock, but removing a CSD template does. I think that if you revert your removal of the CSD tag as an error, it should be fine to delete. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:16, 8 June 2023 (UTC)

Campaignbox edits

Regarding your hasty reverts of my recent work and your message on my talk page:

resize can't wrap multi-line content. In general, sidebar and navbox text is the right size; leave it as it is. This edit, for example, changing the text size to 99%, appears to be useless.

The example you refer to isn't useless. It helps the title Abyssinian–Persian wars fit into a single line of the width-restricted campaignbox, instead of wrapping awkwardly to two lines, which the other campaignboxes are back to doing now that you've undone my edits on them. (Also, a template's title is not multi-line content!) Farolif (talk) 05:48, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

I have responded at your talk page per WP:TALKFORK. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:30, 9 June 2023 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:Templates suitable for conversion to use Template:Mbox indicating that it is currently empty, and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion. If it remains empty for seven days or more, it may be deleted under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself. Liz Read! Talk! 20:05, 17 June 2023 (UTC)

Liz, I do not see a button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion" anywhere on the page. I have adjusted the page so that it should no longer be suitable for deletion. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:58, 18 June 2023 (UTC)
(talk page stalker) I've declined the speedy given that the page is now properly marked as a tracking category. Mackensen (talk) 17:56, 18 June 2023 (UTC)

While, admittedly, it isn't reproduced accurately by the Met Museum - a strangely common thing, the number of A Sensational Novels or The Yeoman of the Guards I can point to, the cover itself gives the title I used. Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.4% of all FPs. 15:45, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

Update: Title page disagrees. I don't even know anymore. I guess we'll go title page? Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.4% of all FPs. 15:47, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
I was going with the title page and the multiple listings in WorldCat of the 1866 version (notwithstanding the apparent liberties taken with the title on the 1977 reprint cover). Librarians are usually pretty good sources for this stuff, although I have seen some crazy bibliographic listings too. Either way, great job with the doggerel. It made me smile. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:59, 19 June 2023 (UTC)
Thankee! I've reverted back to your version, it's... confusing, but bindings aren't always original, so I'd rather trust a title page, which matches WorldCat, etc. But, aye, I think the doggerel is just... more fun. I can't imagine people want to read opening paragraphs of ten, twenty, thirty articles and lists, but a short summary that includes either an interesting fact or a little humour...
Do feel bad for the Filipina actresses, though. I do not know enough about them to really do a good job, though, to be fair, the articles tend to be of the "After early appearances in X and Y, she achieved fame with a role in Z... [carries on in this line the rest of the article]" which is fair, but how do you even summarise that? Adam Cuerden (talk)Has about 8.4% of all FPs. 16:40, 19 June 2023 (UTC)

Template:Attached KML

I've modified the Module:Attached KML to register template transclusions. Hopefully I didn't mess anything while doing that. But if everything is OK, then we can re-add these templates to the list. See Template:Attached KML/Arkansas Highway 13 which is transcluded vs Template:Attached KML/100 Avenue, Edmonton which isn't (probably because 100 Avenue was moved). Gonnym (talk) 18:28, 20 June 2023 (UTC)

It looks like there are 21 pages at Category:Attached KML errors that could lead to fixing a few untranscluded KML pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:50, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
If your tweak worked, the transcluded pages should disappear from Wikipedia:Database reports/Unused templates/1, I am guessing. Let's see what happens in ~17 hours when the report refreshes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:56, 20 June 2023 (UTC)
Wikipedia:Database reports/Unused templates/33 change diff is −119,167. Not bad considering a lot (most?) transclusions haven't registered yet. But results already show unused templates such as Template:Attached KML/19th Avenue (San Francisco). Gonnym (talk) 09:58, 21 June 2023 (UTC)

Template

Hello, Jonesey95,

You tagged a template for CSD that was deleted in this discussion but there are two other templates that have been recreated. Did you also mean to tag them for deletion as well? Liz Read! Talk! 06:05, 24 June 2023 (UTC)

I looked at those as well. The original rationale for deletion was that the templates were not used. The recreated templates are used, so I let them stay since the original rationale does not apply. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:04, 24 June 2023 (UTC)
Okay, I appreciate the explanation. I typically don't delete templates because I've run into problems doing that before but thank you for offering the reason why you chose to tag this one for deletion. Liz Read! Talk! 01:57, 25 June 2023 (UTC)

template programming help

Hi, I wonder if you could possibly please see Template talk:NRHP header#modify to allow naming of table so rows can be counted. I think that either what I am trying to do is impossible, or I am merely getting tripped up in passing a text string and using it simply in code at Template:NRHP header/sandbox. Any attention would be appreciated. --Doncram (talk, contribs) 23:24, 28 June 2023 (UTC)

Responded there. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:52, 28 June 2023 (UTC)
I made some further comments there which you might not have seen. Including I was trying to suggest the programming of a new NRHP table counter template, which you started, might be made simpler than the more general approach your programming try was taking on. I do very much appreciate your substantive response already, but wonder if my suggestion (basically just search for an "id=ARGUMENT" string) would help.
But about being stuck in Lua coding, and perhaps getting some help, I wonder if it would be okay or good if I could make a request at WP:TEMPREQ, a place "to request a new template written in wiki code or Lua" (mention I just happened to notice at wp:botrequest. Or would that just come back to you? --Doncram (talk, contribs) 12:21, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
I have reached the limit of my skills. A posting at WP:TEMPREQ or WP:VPT seems like a logical next step. I suspect that someone skilled in Lua would be able to fix my new half-built module pretty quickly. – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:24, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Template:Earthquake magnitude

Hello, Jonesey95,

I hope your summer is going well. I don't think you can tag all of the pages associated with this template as CSD G7. I mean, you created the pages as redirects when you moved the pages around but according to policy, WP:G7, the page mover is not considered the creator of a page, it has to be the editor who created the page that was moved. This comes up fairly often so I'm pretty sure that's how these G7s have been handled and why these pages are still sitting in a CSD category and haven't been deleted. If they were valid CSD G7s, they would have quickly been deleted. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 02:47, 4 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks. I tried to figure out what I did in 2020 that led to the current mess; maybe something was changed at the other end of the redirect. At present, these earthquake redirects point to ship templates, so they are nonsensical. Since none of them are used, they should be safe to delete one way or another. Whatever the correct tag for that is, they should get it. Should I RFD them instead? – Jonesey95 (talk) 12:10, 4 July 2023 (UTC)
Sorry I didn't circle back soon enough to provide a useful reply. But it looks like some admin took care of those pages. I'm just leery of doing questionable deletions that can get me brought to Deletion review which is a very unpleasant experience. Other admins don't second guess themselves though and just go with their gut. But we used to have an admin who deleted anything with a CSD tag on it, without ever looking at the page, and they aren't an admin any longer. So that makes those of us who patrol CSD categories be extra careful. Liz Read! Talk! 07:13, 5 July 2023 (UTC)
I think these deletions will be safe; I may or may not have created them in error, but they were definitely unused and pointing to the wrong place. As for avoiding DRV, I get it. I try to avoid all such boards where drama may be found. It's one of the reasons I have declined administrator nominations over the years. Thanks for mopping! I appreciate your work. – Jonesey95 (talk) 11:48, 5 July 2023 (UTC)

Tagging templates as uncategorized

Hi Jonesey! I've noticed you tagging a bunch of templates recently as uncategorized; thanks for doing that! If you're using a tool where it's easy to change the default edit summary, I was wondering if it might be possible to use something a little more descriptive than "uncat", as editors who have templates on their watchlist might be prodded to add categories if it was clearer without clicking through what was happening. (If you're not using a tool, it's totally understandable to just use "uncat" given it's quick to type.) Cheers, Sdkbtalk 23:27, 7 July 2023 (UTC)

I was hoping that "uncat", since it matches the name of the template redirect (uncat) in the diff, would be clear enough, but I enjoy a friendly talk page message. I'm doing hundreds of them manually, since every one is different – some need documentation subpages, some need to be TFD'd or CSD'd, some need to be moved, and I even add categories sometimes, although since it is not my area of expertise, I prefer to leave most pages for those with more skills rather than do it wrong and hide a page in the wrong category. My browser does remember edit summaries, though; I'll try to come up with a more descriptive edit summary and save it in my history for easy recall. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:53, 8 July 2023 (UTC)
Sdkb: Feedback is welcome. I'm trying to do better. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:13, 10 July 2023 (UTC)
I think that summary should hopefully prompt more editors to add categories! Fingers crossed. Cheers, Sdkbtalk 15:30, 11 July 2023 (UTC)

I walk through the Signpost PrefixIndex with fire and with sword.

Please let me know if you notice I've fucked anything up during my recent rampage; I think I may have caused (or fixed) some lint errors. jp×g jp×g 06:33, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

I saw the scorched earth and can still smell the aftermath from here. I don't see any new issues (pun intended) of note; the main Linter problem remaining is still the missing end templates. See "waiting for JWB run to add article-end templates" at the Technical page, and the discussion below that. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:06, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Thoughts?

Running this by you, as I'm baffled. Page has one fostered content error. Without the table line |, it displays correctly, but has the fostered content error. With the |, it's error free, but displays an extra, full width blank row under the headers. I see why Headbomb reverted it, but I'm now puzzled how to get the error removed AND display correctly so we are both satisfied. Any thoughts? Zinnober9 (talk) 07:32, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

I can probably help you with this because I wrote that template and the one it depends on. Pinging everyone at Wikipedia talk:Wikipedia Signpost/Technical. jp×g 09:01, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
Fixed, I think. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:36, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Second

Also baffled on the fostered content error on User talk:Fabartus/Archive08, so if you (or a talk page stalker) want it, have at it. Otherwise, the Fostered content on unprotected user talk pages are all gone (15 or fewer Full protections remain). Zinnober9 (talk) 07:32, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

If you're not using the syntax highlighter gadget, I don't know how you have been so successful. Some stray braces were turning the whole wikitext orange in the highlighter and were a quick fix. I didn't even try to figure out why Linter thought there was a broken table there. Sometimes it's easiest to just fix very broken markup and then run LintHint again, then check the page output to ensure that I didn't break anything. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:39, 23 July 2023 (UTC)
I saw the syntax leak (orange text) from the two {default};" phrases above that, but I some how completely missed the actual error causing culprit. Odd. Guess I was trying to force it one way and overlooked the simpler correct solution. Thank you, I'll go clean the egg off my face. Zinnober9 (talk) 17:44, 23 July 2023 (UTC)

Tangential to this: do you think there are good reasons for linking such common, dictionary words? Tony (talk) 12:50, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

I forget things too. I just didn't expect you to make the same edit after being dressed down a month ago. That struck me as odd. And re tangential, yes: Consensus. It can be a bugger, but it's the pond we all swim in. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:17, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
So do you agree that no one's going to click on a link to "Song" in an inbfobox? A better idea might be to simply apply discrete colour to those head words. Tony (talk) 00:03, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
I have no opinion on the matter, and this is not really a good place to discuss it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:59, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
OK, could be RfCable, but I've never launched one. Maybe, maybe not. Tony (talk) 03:58, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

I'm guessing

... that when you nominate a template for deletion, there's a NOTIFY TEMPLATE CREATOR box you can uncheck. Since DePiep's talk page is now approaching 50 gigabytes, almost all of it TfD nominations, maybe you could start unchecking that box. EEng 18:03, 26 July 2023 (UTC)

I understand the concern, but I have been dunned for not notifying the template's creator in the past. And yes, I know that the creator is blocked. Feel free to manually archive those notices if they are causing trouble. There will be more coming in the future. The editor in question left behind a big mess in template space. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:13, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Not just in template space. EEng 22:03, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Wait! What? 50 gigabytes? Really?
Trappist the monk (talk) 22:09, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Possibly an overestimate. EEng 22:15, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
EEng has a tendency to use words that describe situations in flowery, sometimes downright fishy, language. The mess-leaving editor in question's current talk page is currently only about one-third the size of their latest User Talk archive page, or about 140K. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:36, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Then I was off by a factor of 300,000. So sue me. EEng 15:28, 27 July 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the tweaking and testing. That should definitely make it more robust.  — SMcCandlish ¢ 😼  07:28, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

It was fun. I had to fix Plain text before my fix to Glossary link would work, so it was a fun little project that fixed a couple of minor but annoying edge case bugs. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:10, 28 July 2023 (UTC)

Latest TfDs

I knew that they've had a lot of unused templates, but I would never have guessed it to be this many already. Gonnym (talk) 09:35, 25 July 2023 (UTC)

I would have. I've been avoiding anything resembling interaction for a few years because of some awful experiences, so they had been piling up. There are more TFDs coming. Sometimes taking out the trash is very satisfying. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:19, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
I had the same bad interactions with them as well so I know exactly what you mean. Gonnym (talk) 14:27, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
I started with a list of 5,000 template pages created by this editor. After removing /doc, /testcases, /sandbox, and a few other undeleteable pages, I ended up with about 1,000. I have 400 left. It's exhausting, so it might take me a few days to get through them. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:16, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Done with the list! I expect that a few more pages and subpages will filter into the unused template report as pages from current nominations are deleted and additional pages lose their transclusions. Rather than sort out every last transclusion, I figured it would be easier to let the stragglers reveal themselves naturally. – Jonesey95 (talk) 18:48, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
Good job! Yeah I'm pretty sure we'll get a round of new ones in 7 days. I was looking at some of the templates and noticed some "used" only in other unused templates. So once the 200ish templates are deleted, it will be much easier to find the rest. Gonnym (talk) 19:20, 26 July 2023 (UTC)
I just got back from a week-long wikibreak and found another 20 or so to nominate after the first big round of deletions were done. I was expecting more. – Jonesey95 (talk) 11:53, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

Question about your uncat tag

So I noticed that you tagged the template (Template:LGBT people by nationality and century category header ) I recently made as uncat[11]. I'm confused because I had added several categories to it (Category:Chronology category header templates;Category:LGBT people by nationality and century; Category:LGBT templates; Category:People and person category header templates), on the documentation page. Should those go on the main page of the template? I've only recently started using templates, so there's probably something obvious I'm missing. Mason (talk) 19:28, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @Smasongarrison: When a template has documentation, the categories that the template belongs in should always be inside the documentation. See Help:Template#Categorize templates also Wikipedia:Template documentation#Categories and interwiki links. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:40, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
My mistake, mostly. The template was on an "uncategorized templates" report, and when I viewed it, I'm guessing that a cache hadn't been updated or I just didn't see the categories. When I edited the documentation page and saw no categories where they usually live, I tagged it. I should have looked again after saving my edit; the categories should have been shown at that time. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:09, 9 August 2023 (UTC)
No worries! I appreciate you and redrose being so responsive, and pointing me in the right direct to where I can learn more about how categories work with templates. Keep up the good work with tagging those templates. :) Mason (talk) 23:14, 9 August 2023 (UTC)

It's not a tag, it's a marker like this: b. It's shown only in your watchlist, between the "hist" link and the link to the page that was edited. For that marker to be shown against an edit, the user concerned needs to be a bot, and that bot also needs to have enabled the bot flag for the edit concerned. When viewing your watchlist, if you select "Hide ... ⬜ bots", it hides these bot edits, but not edits that were made by bots where the bot flag wasn't set. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 22:56, 14 August 2023 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Database reports/Uncategorized templates

Hey, question about Wikipedia:Database reports/Uncategorized templates. Shouldn't this report include template sub-pages? So pages like Template:1896 Canadian federal election/Oxford South are added to categories and can be found? Gonnym (talk) 09:49, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

I think that on balance, it would not help. There are zillions of subpages of the type /core and other pages that are used by the template, do not have documentation or categories, and work just fine.
What I think we need on that page are templates that have one of a subset of automatically applied categories that do not help with discovery or organization, like Category:Userboxes with insufficient color contrast. See, for example, User World War II service, which is otherwise uncategorized. There are other categories of this type, but I have been avoiding making a list of them and asking for refinement of the report until the current database report has been cleared. It's close to being done. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:11, 17 August 2023 (UTC)

John Ogilby

Hello, Jonesey95. I've been working on John Ogilby to get it up to GA standard. Before I submit it formally, I'd really appreciate someone giving it a "stand back and take the long view" of it for any blatant errors or omissions. I've been squirrelling away on the detail for so long that I may have missed something obvious. So if you can spare a few minutes, would you look it over for me please. TYVM if your can.

(I have also been working oj Britannia (atlas) but that has some way to go. I have a section on the copyright dispute to do, most of all. So it is certainly unfinished.) 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 19:05, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

I gave it a cursory read and it looked pretty good to me. I made a few copy edits and MOS-related fixes. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:43, 18 August 2023 (UTC)
I see now that you are a member of the GoCE and, since you have already in effect done the CE already, it seems pointless to leave it in the CE queue. Should I just remove it (from the queue) or would you prefer to tag it as done? 𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 09:15, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
I did not do a complete copy edit. I just looked for minor style-related problems and obvious errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:54, 19 August 2023 (UTC)
Ok, I'll leave it the queue. Meanwhile, TYVM for your kind remarks about the article and for fixing my silly errors. --𝕁𝕄𝔽 (talk) 16:50, 19 August 2023 (UTC)

Duplicate page creation by user creating confusion

A user has created a duplicate page for Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023's draft making it a duplication. Requesting your review towards it for further action.

Duplicate article - The Digital Personal Data Protection Bill, 2022 Thewikizoomer (talk) 07:00, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Hi @Thewikizoomer: the second of those articles has been flagged as a possible copyright violation so there's not much Jonesey or anyone else can do until that issue has been investigated. You can ask for the articles to be merged here. Cheers, Baffle☿gab 07:49, 18 August 2023 (UTC)

You are again doing mass BOTLIKE editing

You are again doing mass WP:BOTLIKE editing of very old project pages. You are polluting my watchlist, disrupting surveillance of old pages that are important records that should not be commonly edited. Stop. Get a bot approved so that you can flag the edits both bot and minor. Do not challenge me back to write the bot for you. If you’re unskilled with bots, that’s your challenge to overcome. SmokeyJoe (talk) 21:53, 20 August 2023 (UTC)

Similarly, your friend User:Zinnober9, although he is doing it only sporadically. But still, these edits are obviously efficient, if you look at the sequences of sequential similar edits, clearly review of the editing plan is needed, which is one big benefit of doing bot editing according to policy. SmokeyJoe (talk) 21:58, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
My response is the same as before, when you made this claim and provided zero diffs to back it up. Please stop harassing me with unsubstantiated claims. My edits do not match the description at WP:BOTLIKE. The onus is still on you to provide diffs and/or other evidence. Until you do so successfully, I will continue to make manual edits to fix errors that cannot be fixed by any known bot's code, leaving bot-fixable errors for bots to fix. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:21, 20 August 2023 (UTC)
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/Jonesey95&target=Jonesey95&offset=20230821&limit=500
eg from 22:00, 20 August 2023 to 22:01, 20 August 2023 you performed eighteen near identical edits, edit summary "‎(Fix Linter errors.)". These are obviously not manual edits, but also, they are performing small systematic edits to very old pages. The systematic aspect means a bot could be written. Very old means there is no urgency. As previously, I have absolutely no issue with edits like these to live articles, but when done to talk archives and old XfDs, there is negligible or no benefit to any reader, and disruption due to watchlist pollution. I also note that many of these lint fixing edits have needed repeated applications, which shows that they were not reliably or well done.
Looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Earth_(5th_nomination)&action=history for example, even with User:ಮಲ್ನಾಡಾಚ್ ಕೊಂಕ್ಣೊ's approved bot, there are five sequential lint fixes. This indicates that the whole job, possible the whole Linter project, is running at low standards. The obvious remedy is to look at the bot approval process, but you are ignoring that policy-required step.
I cannot understand how you do not see your lint fixing editing as obvious botlike. SmokeyJoe (talk) 10:46, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
there is negligible or no benefit to any reader that argument was previously made, over and over again, and yet was never enough to reach a consensus to prevent these fixes. There is currently no bot. There is no requirement for one. You are more than welcome to code one and do it yourself. You can also stop watching very old pages. Finally, if you still have an issue, I'd recommend ignoring it and stop complaining. Gonnym (talk) 14:03, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Re the eighteen near identical edits, many or all of those were manual edits, because, as you figured out, they were not identical. A bot could not have made all of those edits, because determining which edit to make to each page required parsing the context. In any event, it would not have been reasonable to set up a bot to make just eighteen non-identical edits.
For other page watchers: you may note that it looks like I am editing very quickly. What is actually happening is that I am saving quickly after editing slowly. I often open many tabs, perform edits in each one, preview and check the edits before saving, and then save all of them when I believe that I am done with my edits. Since I am not a bot, I sometimes need to do a follow-up edit to catch something that I missed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:21, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Publishing page for Prince Alexander Dlamini

Hi I saw you on Wikiproject eSwatini. We have a draft for Alexander Maier-Dlamini, who married into the family and is now supposedly divorcing after less than a year. Could you help me clean up the formatting to make it ready for publication? I was also wondering if the citation of western sources regarding rights analysis should be removed from the personal life section.

Thanks Nyhn2023 (talk) 00:38, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

That page is an undersourced mess of a BLP. It needs more references to reliable sources. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:01, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
Can the under sourced information be removed and the rest published? This biography does include a lot of information outside of the individual Nyhn2023 (talk) 02:20, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
The subject of the article has to meet Wikipedia's notability criteria in order for the article to be published. Without more coverage by reliable sources explaining why this person is notable, I don't think the article can be moved to the main article space. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
The criteria both in the public space in the USA/UK and somewhat internationally can be found easily as he’s been established for over a decade. I do agree that it would be helpful to go through current and additional sources for more information and citation. Nyhn2023 (talk) 02:23, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
If you’d be willing to team with me on this, I’d really appreciate it. When it comes to rounding out eSwatini this is a related LGBT+ issue so there’s potential for expansion in other areas. I find it very interesting that they usurped Swazi law. I found the marriage license in public domain if there’s anything that can be pulled from there. It mentions two middle names for the spouse, who also seems to be related to Dr. Mwale from the former Northern Rhodesia Zambia. Nyhn2023 (talk) 02:22, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
I am not interested in working to develop this draft article. I do not generally work on content creation. I focus primarily on maintenance and fixing errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:28, 21 August 2023 (UTC)
I understand and respect your work, thank you for that. I’d ask if you’d take a few days to consider deviating from your usual mode of contribution for this piece, it’s a good one. I am quite surprised that it didn’t exist before, was expecting to find a few sentences and a hefty controversy section. If not, would you know a user who might consider? Nyhn2023 (talk) 02:31, 21 August 2023 (UTC)

Jonesey, just an FYI: the editor moved the "undersourced mess of a BLP" into main space, and I moved it back. Thanks. Drmies (talk) 13:56, 23 August 2023 (UTC)

Few things

First, your "away message"(?) appears out of date. The instructions state to notify you if those have passed. They have!

Secondly, and what ultimately brings me here: I have very little experience with the Sports Links template, however I have made a request here that has gone unanswered. Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I'm doing something out of order, but since you were the last person besides me to have written something, I'm assuming you know more of the process and procedures than I do! Can you review my requests there and help me navigate the waters? TIA! GauchoDude (talk) 12:45, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for the wikibreak note. I am grateful, as promised.
I don't know that template, but edit requests are intended for uncontroversial changes or fixes. Your proposed change was questioned/opposed by the only person who responded. If you would like more people to see your proposal, I suggest posting a link to your request at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cycling. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:10, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
I believe we may be looking at different things. I have not requested anything relating to cycling ... I'm attempting to add a few gymnastics-related links. As such, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Cycling likely would not be the correct place. My post I believe is directly under a cycling-related request, hence the confusion. I'm not sure how to direct link, but you can see my most recent posts in the history of the page. GauchoDude (talk) 16:13, 6 September 2023 (UTC)
Sorry, I was looking at the wrong section. My mistake. As for your gymnastics-related request, I have no opinion on it, and I tend not to make Wikidata-related edits, since I do not understand its workings. That template page has fewer than 30 watchers, so you may not get a response to your request. If you are able to modify the template's sandbox code to implement your request as a test, you may be able to add an edit request template to the talk page. If that is all gibberish to you, a posting at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Gymnastics might help attract a template editor to your request. – Jonesey95 (talk) 16:44, 6 September 2023 (UTC)

Need page history removal

Dear admin,

could you be so kind enough to remove the last 2 edits on my User:Qwerty284651/subpage for privacy reasons?

Best, Qwerty284651 (talk) 15:37, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Sorry, I'm not an admin. If you place Edit fully-protected on your talk page, followed by an explanation of what you want, an admin will stop by to take a look. It might not be quite the right way to do it, but it should get the job done. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:20, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
(talk page watcher) @Qwerty284651:  Done. The edits are still visible to admins; if you want them to be suppressed even for admins, you need to contact the oversight team by email, as described at WP:OVERSIGHT. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 23:17, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, Redrose64. It's nice to be watched. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:20, 12 September 2023 (UTC)
@Redrose64, thank you. Admin level protection is more than enough. Qwerty284651 (talk) 23:42, 12 September 2023 (UTC)

Airntd

Your recent edit to Airntd left a gigantic trail of redlinked "Soviet (something) aircraft" categories on Special:WantedCategories. Content can't be left sitting in redlinked categories at all, so they all have to be resolved by being either created or emptied out as soon as possible — but I don't have the necessary background knowledge of the subject matter to create them myself, and since they're being autogenerated by the template they're impossible for me to remove without completely reverting your edit to the template, so since they're related to something that you did, could you please look into how to resolve the following?

Again, these can't just be left there as redlinks, and it's critically important that they have to be either created or emptied, so they need to be dealt with as soon as possible. Thanks. Bearcat (talk) 21:31, 14 September 2023 (UTC)

Unfortunately, the change was caused by a single category renaming that affects these other categories. See this thread for details. I have reverted the change; the template will need to be changed in a more sophisticated way, or someone will need to rethink the CFD that led to the change. I expect that the revert will lead to a different set of redlinked categories; you'll have to talk to the CFD participants about those, I think. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:51, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
Courtesy ping to Ymblanter, who may know where the original CFD happened. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:57, 14 September 2023 (UTC)
Thanks, I will probably have to go for a manual solution. Ymblanter (talk) 05:23, 15 September 2023 (UTC)
The CFD was here: Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2023 August 28#Category:Soviet and Russian attack aircraft, plus a bunch of similar nominations on the same page. Ymblanter (talk) 05:26, 15 September 2023 (UTC)

Change on my talk page?

Hey Jonesy I suppose there is a reason for why you made that small change on my talk page and I could just leave it at that but I'm really curious so can you tell me why exactly you did it? Thanks and have a nice day! also how did you come across my account on here I've been inactive for a while now - Scuraball (talk) 09:52, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

The people who maintain the Wikimedia software created a tracking list of all of the pages with invalid options in File: invocations. One of those is the use of px sizes with the "frame" option. There is a group of us working to clean up these minor errors on the English Wikipedia, so we are going down the various lists of pages and fixing errors. Your page was on the list, and now it is free of errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:55, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi, thanks for reverting my edit to Template:CCI. I don't recall actually editing it directly, but I think I accidentally edited it when I forgot the "subst:" in the template when I was adding it to an article's talk page, and tried to replace the ~~~~ with my signature. I had noticed that it didn't appear in the talk page's history, but didn't think much of it. It must have edited the actual template page. Sorry about that, and thanks. ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 18:05, 24 September 2023 (UTC)

Hi there. For consistency, were you intending to nominate Template:WIG-1 and other wrappers in Category:Women in Green templates? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:10, 29 September 2023 (UTC)

Dear Jonesey95, i'm sorry you had work with my article. Meanwhile i do have a "vademecum" (in Word) with all the various info on the German and the English wikipedia, and i sincerely hope that i won't make so much mistakes anymore. Kind regards, and again, Thanks! Naomi Hennig (talk) 20:11, 30 September 2023 (UTC)

Linter errors on fresh Signpost articles?

Hmm... I just noticed this. Has this been going on for longer than just this issue? Is there something in the publishing script that needs to be fixed? jp×g 06:34, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

One of the pages was missing its ending block/article templates. I don't know whether the addition of those templates is semi-automated or manual. Other pages were missing closing italic markup, which has nothing to do with the publishing scripts. Unfortunately, there is nothing in the MediaWiki software that prevents or warns against the creation of new syntax errors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:14, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Template:uncat

Hi. See diff. I am confused. I saw categories on both the template and the doc page before you added uncat back.

--Timeshifter (talk) 21:24, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

That's just a tracking category auto-added by a template, not a category that helps editors find the template, see other templates like it, and figure out which one they should use. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:26, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks. I added a topic category to sticky header. I will leave out a topic category for header test since it is just for testing stuff. It has come in very handy for that. --Timeshifter (talk) 22:27, 4 October 2023 (UTC)
OK. Being in Category:Uncategorized pages will keep it off of the report, so as long as that stays, I don't have a problem with it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:41, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

GOCE script hangs up

Hi again, Jonesey. I've had good luck with the script the last couple of drives, but this section has brought me to my knees:

SAMBOT2000xp (talk)
I've corrected their input errors to the drive page on my input file (which is copypasted here), but the script won't get past this and I can't see anything else wrong; do you? Thanks for your help and all the best, Miniapolis 18:45, 5 October 2023 (UTC)

I don't see a problem. Are you sure it's getting hung up on this one? It may be processing this one and getting stuck on the next one. Is there a weird hidden character that is left over from your removal of the zero-word article line? If so, it didn't survive the copy-paste above. I haven't run the script for a few years now, but I'd be willing to take a look at your input file and the script output if you post them in a sandbox. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:58, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks for your offer to help, Jonesey. The input and output files are at User:Miniapolis/GOCE sandbox, and I've already tried reformatting the all-caps username :-). All the best, Miniapolis 22:40, 5 October 2023 (UTC)
I found an extra hidden character after "371" in one of the counts. Copy out what is on the page now. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:32, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
Thanks so much! Unfortunately, though, the script still hung up there. I removed SAMBOT2000xp, and it worked; I'll add them manually. I wonder if it's a thing with that uppercase sig. One of these days, please tell me how you found that hidden character. Thanks again and all the best, Miniapolis 12:57, 6 October 2023 (UTC)
Ah, well. That's not too many to add manually. I copied the entire text into a text editor on my computer (in my case BBEdit for Mac OS) and told the software to show me all of the spaces and invisible characters. There was one right after "371" and before the closing parenthesis. I was able to backspace to remove it, even though I couldn't see it. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:13, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Incorrect Edits to Lester Fuess Eastman page in 2020

A team of colleagues, Cornell administrators, and former PhD students all worked together in 2019 and 2020 in preparing a comprehensive wikipedia page for Prof. Lester Fuess Eastman late of Cornell University and you removed very large chunks of content from this article. We would like it restored but it appears we will now need to redo the entire article. Do you have a sense of why you took this action? Please respond at your earliest convenience. LEVlamb (talk) 03:50, 15 October 2023 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @LEVlamb: You refer, presumably, to the reversion by Jonesey95 of these three edits. I fully agree with Jonesey95 on that one. The edits completely broke the referencing used in the article and created a mess at the bottom of the page. The additional content was entirely unreferenced, and so failed the policy on verifiability; it also failed the policy on neutrality. Further, you would appear to have a conflict of interest. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 07:54, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes, what Redrose64 said. Refer especially to the conflict of interest link, given your explanation. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:00, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
The material was prepared by the former students and colleagues of Lester Eastman. I do no agree that their description of his research would be a conflict of interest or biased. His research is well know and he had many patents and published articles to reinforce this description of his work. I was the aggregator of various contributors and not its author. 2600:4040:5E0A:8000:F4E8:922A:C9B5:B6D4 (talk) 19:18, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
In this case, the Wikipedia parameters in the COI policy seem overly restricitve. Who better than scientific colleagues and associates to describe a peer or mentor's contribution to science or technology? I am conferring with the authors to see if they would like to pursue it further, but it appears that another venue will be a better platform for capturing additional dimensions related to his research and the important scientific developments stemming from it.If they agree, we will leave it as limited by jonesey95 and review the relevance and accuracy of more recent additions / edits. 2600:4040:5E0A:8000:F4E8:922A:C9B5:B6D4 (talk) 20:16, 15 October 2023 (UTC)
See WP:COIEDIT, which explains how to request changes to pages for which you have a COI, including pages about people who are your friends, employers, mentors, or colleagues. It is not difficult. In any event, the primary reason for the revert was a technical one: the edit in question introduced a large batch of technical errors onto the page. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:42, 16 October 2023 (UTC)

Page mover right

Shall I go ahead and give you the page mover user right so you can move categories with history instead of having to move them by cut-and-paste? * Pppery * it has begun... 00:32, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

That would probably be quite useful! Is there a primer somewhere that explains how to use this user right and how to avoid its potential pitfalls? As with template editing, I can imagine it being a source of interesting screw-ups. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:33, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
I think the standard template below should explain everything relevant. When it comes to categories, I think you already know how to avoid most of the pitfalls (since template-generated categories are the most common one), except that even though you have the ability to push the button the social expectation is still that all moves go through CfD. * Pppery * it has begun... 00:37, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Jonesey95. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Thanks for the links. I have read the relevant pages. For now, I will stick to pages affected by this CFD. I suspect that it means that I will run afoul of Liz and Bearcat, and possibly others, who keep a close watch on category problems. I hope that they will be willing to post here with gentle messages when I do something out of order.
I also suspect that since there are 1,000+ categories involved in that CFD, that the category error reports will be in a bit of turmoil over the next couple of days as gnomes work to edit userboxes, other templates, and individual pages that assign categories, and then move the categories, or possibly do those things in a slightly different order. I don't see an efficient way to do it without leaving some temporary red links lying around for a period of hours or even a couple of days, but I'm open to learning if there is a standard workflow. – Jonesey95 (talk) 03:34, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
I am tracking these member/participant category moves at User:Jonesey95/sandbox4 if anyone is interested. Many category moves require a template edit followed by a few individual page edits to tidy up before the member category is empty. – Jonesey95 (talk) 06:12, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
If you haven't noticed already, you might want to look at the ucat param in Template:User WP/switch. -- WOSlinker (talk) 10:57, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Yes, I've looked at it a few times. What I take away is that when User WP is used in a userbox, you have to move the category first so that it exists and passes the ifexist test. At that point, the pages will reassign themselves. I haven't figured out what to do with category redirects that already exist, so I'm leaving those for later, or for more experienced editors. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:27, 19 October 2023 (UTC)

You change the name of category on WikiProject userboxes

Hi, hope you are doing well, I have notice you have changed name of usercategory of userboxes in WP:CVJK but the old category is still there. Kindly move the category from Category:WikiProject Chenab Valley members to Category:WikiProject Chenab Valley participants which is actually supposed by you. Thank you. ❯❯❯ Chunky aka Al Kashmiri (✍️) 04:41, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Done. Over 1,000 category pages are being moved, so you may see red-linked categories over the next couple of days. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:46, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Hello, Jonesey95,

I see you moved the category page over to its new title. Are you also going to move all of the category contents? Moving the category page is just the easy, first step in the process of recategorizing all of these pages. Thank you. Liz Read! Talk! 07:09, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

In short, yes. In general, I am moving pages to the new category before moving the category page itself (by adjusting template or userbox code), but sometimes the process reverses those steps. As I wrote above, there are over 1,000 of these categories, populated by hundreds of templates. Some of the pages move automatically because they use User WP, and some of the pages need to be adjusted manually or moved by modifying templates. The process will take a few days. I am keeping a master list of all of the categories to ensure that I don't leave behind any stragglers. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:20, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
PS to Liz: If you or another admin adds the rest of the category list to Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working/Large, the bot will take care of most of the categorization of individual user pages. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:17, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

Speedy CFD

Categories proposed for speedy renaming need to wait 48 years hours. Can you please not jump the gun on ones that weren't in the original nomination? Timrollpickering (talk) 21:41, 20 October 2023 (UTC)

I would be happy to comply if I knew which categories you were talking about. I think I have applied speedy tags only to categories related to the CFD that were in the way of moves. – Jonesey95 (talk) 21:48, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
Category:WikiProject Animation members by work groups was only tagged today yet moved immediately. Timrollpickering (talk) 22:00, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
Hmm, I didn't notice anything different about the banner; I must be a bit banner-blind after a couple thousand edits related to this CFD. I think I found that category by trolling through Category:Wikipedians by WikiProject and looking for any remaining categories with "member" in the name. – Jonesey95 (talk) 22:27, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
48 years? How is that 'speedy'?

Broken linter fix

Hi Jonesey95, thanks for fixing linter errors! I hate broken HTML and am happy about everyone who fixes it. Would you mind re-trying at Template:Editnotices/Page/Wikipedia:Administrator intervention against vandalism? Thank you very much in advance! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 15:45, 21 October 2023 (UTC)

DYK lints

Per this diff: I'm using User:SD0001/DYK-helper.js for my noms, so that is where the bad tags are coming from. Might be worth pinging them about or making a TE request. jp×g 04:06, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

@SD0001: Looking at this, I see what is up: line 443 and line 452 can be changed.
Line 443 from
 ' | hook = ' + params.hook + (params.source ? (' <small>Source: ' + params.source + '</small>') : );
to
 ' | hook = ' + params.hook + (params.source ? (' ') : );
Line 452 from
 (params['source' + n] ? (' <small>Source: ' + params['source' + n] + '</small>') : );
to
 (params['source' + n] ? (' ') : );
Haven't tested this so I am not 100% on it working properly but I can't think of a reason why it wouldn't work. jp×g 04:11, 25 October 2023 (UTC)
It may need a line break before the smalldiv. This may break the bullet continuity. It will need some testing, I imagine. I see five or so of these per month, and other editors are probably fixing more, since template space is essentially free of Linter errors and we work hard to keep it that way. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:38, 25 October 2023 (UTC)

Lint lint lint lint lint lint lint lint

yet another bizarre thing from signpost history.... this time it's Template:S-s which is apparently used in many old Signpost issue pages, and also transcluded onto approx 2.7k user talk pages. The situation is basically this:

are basically the same template with some minor differences. I have experimented with (and succeeded at) coming up with a way for the current form of S-s (i.e. the version in user talk space) to be easily substed. The rest of its 5k transclusions are just from Signpost issue pages and archive pages and single pages themselves, i.e. very easy to just fix. What I think would probably be best is to:

 1. Subst current user talk instances of S-s (I think this is what's causing the fostering errors)
 2. Move the code from Signpost/item to S-s
 3. Update Signpost pages that invoke Signpost/item (approx. 1k) to invoke S-s
 4. Profit (all Signpost issue/archive pages use the same templates for cover items).

I think this should go hand-in-hand with some other mass changes, since it's going to be a very long AWB run, that goes over a bunch of pages: what else in user talk space needs to be fixed? Do you have a script that you can add regexes to? Is there something I can add to my own script? jp×g🗯️ 01:02, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Alternately, maybe all of that damn substing could be avoided if we just figured out what was causing the fostered content errors and fixed it (?) jp×g🗯️ 01:04, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
I don't think we should do substing of s-s on 21,000 old user talk pages. Also, it might be OK to have two templates if they had reasonable names. I think we should just (a) figure out the problem and fix s-s if necessary and then (b) move one or both templates to much better names, leaving redirects. s-s is a bad name left over from the old Wild West days of Wikipedia. No judgment on the old-timers who made it; we have just learned how to name templates better in the past 15 or so years. Does s-s actually need to be changed, or is renaming enough? – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:55, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Ha! I was quite frightened by that 21k number as well. It is misleading, though. Nearly all of those are caused by the Signpost issue pages themselves using s-s, so fixing them has nothing to do with editing user pages (the upstream issue pages can be fixed and the userspace transclusions will disappear). There are only a couple thousand userpages which have them hardcoded into their own source. I am still somewhat concerned about that, because it is a large number of pages. But I don't think it is impossible. jp×g🗯️ 02:32, 8 November 2023 (UTC)
Either way, can we just move s-s to Signpost article link old or Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/Templates/signpost-article-link-old or something similar, adjust its documentation, and be done with it? I don't see anything broken. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:46, 8 November 2023 (UTC)

Not me. You could ask the bot operator or VPT, or wait a day to see if it fixes itself. It may have been a temporary server issue. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:35, 16 November 2023 (UTC)

Tidy Fonts

Thanks, but I have the tidy fonts well in hand per my edit agreement with Primefac for these pages with Tidy Fonts that you were aware of. I have been asking him for small sets that I found manageable and despite my agile response in delinting these pages, you forced nearly all pages of my request yesterday to take two edits. If you could ignore the remaining 140 or so pages with Tidy Font errors so that we aren't duplicating efforts and unnecessarily bothering these admin with multiple edits, that would be great. Thanks, Zinnober9 (talk) 16:55, 26 November 2023 (UTC)

What I'm reading is that you own the tidy font link list. Hmm. OK. I generally make sure to leave behind only obsolete tags, mostly font tags, since they are lower priority and more readily fixable by bots. If Legobot ever comes back, it can clean up most font tags and should be able to add other easy obsolete tag patterns. Thanks for being part of the de-linting team! – Jonesey95 (talk) 17:15, 26 November 2023 (UTC)
Normally I wouldn't care and would be very happy for the assistance, but I feel I'm more on the hook for these since these are admin archives and they've been special requests that I've instigated. I want to bother the admins as little as possible and not leave things behind for later when we have access now, especially since there isn't a bot running obsoletes and other easier stuff at the moment. I should be done with the remainder in the next few days.
Not sure which error I'll focus on next, but whatever it will be, it won't be something that I feel any sort of ownership over, and I'd be very happy to have your knowledgeable assistance on if you so desire! Zinnober9 (talk) 00:20, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Stop icon This is your only warning; if you remove or change other editors' legitimate talk page comments again, as you did at Template_talk:Infobox_drug, you may be blocked from editing without further notice.
You know...you've already pissed me off several times by making false claims, don't add to it by editing my comments. Lint schmindt. Don't do it. This. Likewise: You can not like it, but stop falsely portraying my proposed edit as adding unreferenced info to wikipedia and not following the RFC. Be aware that that false assertions of personal attacks are themselves personal attacks. Knock it off. All of it.
RudolfoMD (talk) 12:04, 29 November 2023 (UTC)

You're in the wrong here. That was a syntax error, the only one of its kind in all of Wikipedia at the time, that was negatively affecting the display of the rest of the page. My fix was routine and was clearly allowed by Wikipedia guidelines. Please take a deep breath and assume good faith. – Jonesey95 (talk) 13:21, 29 November 2023 (UTC)
Partly. Struck warning. You too. This is worth reading and links to a relevant guideline: Information icon Welcome to Wikipedia. Everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia. However, discussion pages are meant to be a record of a discussion; deleting or editing legitimate comments is considered bad practice, even if you meant well. Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting. Take a look at the welcome page to learn more about contributing to this encyclopedia. Thank you.. It's standard warning uw-tpv1. I have now figured out that while your edit messed up the indentation of my comment which followed, which I had to fix, your edit did reduce later indentation back to normal also. Can you accept this? : "Even making spelling and grammatical corrections in others' comments is generally frowned upon, as it tends to irritate the users whose comments you are correcting." Why not act in good faith and stop falsely portraying my proposed edit as adding unreferenced info to wikipedia and not following the RFC? FYI, I presume you'll be pleased to hear I added the black box warning sourcing to wikidata too, so now it's redundant.
WP:TPO. I fixed a formatting error in your post that broke the formatting for the rest of the page, including indenting subsequent section headers. If I hadn't done it, another gnome would have come along within the hour to do exactly the same thing. You keep accusing me, someone who assumes good faith, is a trusted and experienced template editor, and links to guidelines, of things that are untrue. Does that sort of behavior work for you in the rest of your life? In my experience, that sort of behavior is not going to help you get the edit you want at Infobox drug. You continue to accuse me of disruption and libel, and I would rather not hear from you again. – Jonesey95 (talk) 01:00, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Nonstandard font color names don't translate

I noticed in your edit of 20:23, 29 November 2023 (UTC) of User talk:Jimbo Wales/Archive 201, you changed

<font color="vermillion">QuackGuru</font> (<font color="burntorange">talk</font>): (uncomment to show rendering:)

to

<span style="color:vermillion;">QuackGuru</span> (<span style="color:burntorange;">talk</span>): QuackGuru (talk)

As noted at MW:Help:Lint errors/obsolete-tag: <font color="x"> accepts some nonstandard font color names such as burntorange and vermillion, which are not on the list of 16 HTML colors or the list of 124 X11 colors. The replacement <span style="color: ..."> markup recognizes only color names on these lists. So, Quackguru's signature font colors get lost in translation. Not sure if you want to do anything about it, just passing this along. Feel free to remove the fonty display from this comment to remove two obsolete HTML lint errors. —Anomalocaris (talk) 09:16, 30 November 2023 (UTC)

Those colors do not appear to be supported by font tags either (they both show as red – possibly #E00000 and #B00000, respectively, which do not appear to match valid CSS named colors – here on my talk page in the browser), so I'm inclined to consider this a GIGO and not worry about it. Blue links to both pages are a reader-friendly degradation mode. I'll give it a thought, but I don't see a great way to fix my regexes. I suppose I could have a giant list of all of the colors in each of my color-replacement regexes, but ugh. Thanks for the note; I appreciate knowing when I'm doing something that doesn't work exactly as I expect. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:45, 30 November 2023 (UTC)
This may be a browser thing - it is known that some browsers are more tolerant of incorrectly-formed HTML than other browsers may be; and colour values may be among those where different browsers have different ways of failing gracefully.
As a historical note, the early HTML specs only allowed the 16 basic colour names; one or two browsers provided 100 or so extra color names, and once these began to be recognised by the majority of browsers, they became formalised as what we now know as the X11 colours. Other changes have occurred: orange was added to the basic set at some point, which now has 17 colour names; and more recently, rebeccapurple was added to the X11 set for CSS Color Module Level 4, but not all browsers recognise it yet. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 00:07, 1 December 2023 (UTC)
As another historical note, it was QuackGuru's signature that led me to put in that note at MW:Help:Lint errors/obsolete-tag. —Anomalocaris (talk) 09:38, 1 December 2023 (UTC)

George Hamilton of Greenlaw and Roscrea

Dear Janesey95, I wanted to report progress on one of the problems you pointed out concerning the MOS compliancy of the timeline tables that I have added to certain biographies. On 14 April 2023 you pointed out to me on the example of the article George Hamilton of Greenlaw and Roscrea that I should:

 1. explain the use I made of non-standard (MOS:ITALIC) Italics
 2. comply with MOS:DATE
 3. comply with MOS:DONTHIDE

I made progress on No. 2 by finding that right-aligning solves the problem. In this way I can comply with MOS using the dmy format and still have the year stand out more to help the reader browsing for an event in a certain year.

I have implemented this on the cited example (George Hamilton of Greenlaw and Roscrea) and some others (e.g. Antoine Hamilton) and will slowly change it in the many other timelines I made. Concerning problem number 1, I still just explain my particular use of italics in a initial remark (is this good enough?) and concerning number three my timelines still do not comply. I consider that it is admissible to present them collapsed. The DONTHIDE rule suffers many generally accepted exceptions such as collapsed ahnentafels and many collapsed navigational boxes. I find that DONTHIDE treats Wikipedia like a paper encyclopedia and forbids us to take advantage of what can be done in a web-based one. Besides the table shows and hides itself without problems in mobile view. With thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 19:32, 2 December 2023 (UTC)

The date alignment looks better. I made a couple of adjustments for accessibility and formatting. – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:03, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Dear Jonesey95, thanks for looking into this. Sorry to still bother you. I struggle to understand your "ajustments for accessibility and formatting". You made two changes: the first concerns the table caption (or title), in the second you reduced the italics to just "italics".
1. You changed:
|colspan=3|Timeline -> |+Timeline
With your version we fall into the case of a table with caption in Help:Table#Collapsible tables where the collapsed version shows the caption and then the "show" control in the next line below it. I find this is not very satifactory because it is not obvious for the reader that it is a table that has been collapsed. The caption looks like a section heading. Also it wastes space by occupying two lines.
I therefore thought it better to pretend that the table had no caption by including the caption in the first header row. The collapsed table then shows as a table cell holding the caption and the "show" control. I feel this is much more satisfactory. The reader can tell immediately that it was a table that has been collapsed. This is similar to the way navboxes are collapsed, which are essentially also tables.
2. Another example of me abusing italics contrary to MOS:ITALICS. I intended to indicate that this is a remark, not really a table content. Perhaps I should prefix this with "Remark:".
An example of the newest type of timetable can be found in the article Felim O'Neill of Kinard, which also has a collapsed navbox. Dear Jonesey95, thank you again for your attention and for letting me profit from your deep understanding of the MOS. Best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 20:30, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
All data tables need a table caption for accessibility. Accessibility is a core policy of Wikipedia. See MOS:TABLECAPTION. I think "Remark:" is fine. You could also put the note at the bottom of the table, since it's a sort of table legend. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:53, 3 December 2023 (UTC)
Dear Jonesey95. Yes, I want to comply with MOS:TABLECAPTION, even if it is only a how-to guide and not a Wikipedia guideline and there are many tables in FAs that do not have a "|+" caption. If the collapsed table is displayed in two lines; that is not a major obstacle. I think I found a neat way how to display the "caveat" about the lack of precision and the "remark" about the use of italics for historical background dates. Please have another look at George Hamilton of Greenlaw and Roscrea. With many thanks for your patient guidance. I learned a lot from you, Johannes Schade (talk) 20:42, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
This would all be easier for you if complied with MOS:DONTHIDE, but if you are OK with a two-line table header when it is collapsed, I'm not going to fight about it. As for "it is only a how-to guide", I linked to it because Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Accessibility#Data tables, a guideline, is not as detailed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 23:18, 7 December 2023 (UTC)
Dear Jonesey95, of course you are right, MOS:Accessibility#Data and WP:Manual of Style/Tables both explicitly prescribe table captions. I looked a bit at tables in recent FAs and found that "class=wikitable ..." is usually preferred over the use of the "Table" template; also that "class=nowrap" on the |+ line keeps the collapsed table on one line. So I made corresponding changes. I am not so sure about my use of the "border:none" style that displays the caveat and remark as if they were not part of the table but above it. Is that acceptable? Some might use footnotes, but I find footnotes can be too easily ignored. Quite a few recent FAs have collapsed tables, e.g. the FA Argosy (magazine) (6 December 2023). Despite MOS:DONTHIDE they do not seem to be forbidden. WP:Manual of Style/Tables#Appearance states "Consideration may be given to collapsing tables which consolidate information covered in the prose." I think the timeline table does "consolidate information covered in the prose" and is not direct content. With many thanks and best regards, Johannes Schade (talk) 16:21, 8 December 2023 (UTC)

Would you consider becoming a New Page Reviewer?

Hi Jonesey95, we need experienced volunteers.
 • New Page Patrol is currently struggling to keep up with the influx of new articles. We could use a few extra hands on deck if you think you can help.
 • Reviewing/patrolling a page doesn't take much time but it requires a good understanding of Wikipedia policies and guidelines; Wikipedia needs experienced users to perform this task and there are precious few with the appropriate skills. Even a couple reviews a day can make a huge difference.
 • Kindly read the tutorial before making your decision (if it looks daunting, don't worry, it basically boils down to checking CSD, notability, and title). If this looks like something that you can do, please consider joining us.
 • If you would like to join the project and help out, please see the granting conditions. You can apply for the user-right HERE.
 • If you have questions, please feel free to drop a message on my talk page or at the reviewer's discussion board.
 • Cheers, and hope to see you around — ❯❯❯ Raydann(Talk) 16:13, 11 December 2023 (UTC)
Raydann, thanks for the invitation. By the way, there is an unclosed <div> in this message. Please adjust your template or copy/paste wikitext, and please fix the pages where you have posted this message. I have added a closing div tag above. Thanks. – Jonesey95 (talk) 02:49, 12 December 2023 (UTC)
Duly noted. Thank you so much for noticing this. I'll fix this asap. Cheers! ❯❯❯ Raydann(Talk) 08:03, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Seasons Greetings!

signpost barrage

I am raising some major hell with WegweiserBot, let me know if there are any huge panoplies of lint errors I need to fix. S jp×g🗯️ 06:32, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

The only Linter errors I am seeing in the Signpost area are the same missing closing div tags that have been in Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2014-12-17/Featured content and friends. I think I listed them at the Signpost page a while ago. – Jonesey95 (talk) 15:08, 21 December 2023 (UTC)

Thanks for cleaning up PostgreSQL

Hi,

Thanks for the cleanup to PostgreSQL, especially the lead, which I mostly introduced the problems into.

I'm curious why you added the comma to the sentence: "After a review in 2007, the development team decided to keep the name PostgreSQL and the alias Postgres." (I'm hoping for some guide I can use to improve my future writing.)
kop (talk) 19:59, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

I strongly prefer the addition of a comma after an introductory prepositional phrase. I think it improves clarity and flow. See here and here for grammar explanations. – Jonesey95 (talk) 20:04, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

Documentation

I feel like the templatedata at Template:Section header/doc is enough for documentation. Any more I should add? Aaron Liu (talk) 18:01, 22 December 2023 (UTC)

TemplateData is not documentation; it is code that tells the Visual Editor how to interact with the template. A couple of examples are always helpful. You may know what format |3= accepts, for example, but anyone else would have to use trial and error or look at the code. – Jonesey95 (talk) 19:57, 22 December 2023 (UTC)
I have discovered that not showing up in TOC was only because of the __NOTOC__ magic word, not because it was transcluded... I've converted the template into a wrapper.
However, why does being JSON that tells VE (and TemplateWizard) how to do stuff preclude being documentation? Or do you mean that the only thing missing was full examples and an example for |3= Aaron Liu (talk) 03:24, 23 December 2023 (UTC)
I admit that I was trying to help you learn from your own errors; I find that the lessons stick better that way. In creating examples, you appear to have discovered that |3= was not functional. That is a good reason to create a testcases page, but you can usually find basic errors like this when writing documentation with a few examples. – Jonesey95 (talk) 04:48, 23 December 2023 (UTC)

What a Brilliant Idea Barnstar
Thank you so much for your innovative idea to help with my problem at infobox album and your quick implemention! J04n(talk page) 00:04, 30 December 2023 (UTC)
You're welcome. It looks like that category's population is dropping fast! – Jonesey95 (talk) 00:05, 30 December 2023 (UTC)

can you check the documentation , its my first time making it and i have added template to the appropriate articles. DSP2092 (👤, 🗨️) 08:06, 31 December 2023 (UTC)

Nicely done. I cleaned it up a bit. Now we just need to move the template to a better name. I will do that once the TFD discussion is closed. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:46, 31 December 2023 (UTC)
