Sinhalese names

Hi, how are you doing? I have seen you have edited some Sinhalese name articles. For example, Shanaka. I got the feeling you are unfamiliar with Sinhala naming conventions. So I thought of giving you a brief intro. Before the 16th century, Sinhala personal name had the following order.

  • Family names + Personal names

The family name is called the ge name because they usually end with the suffix ge, Sinhalese possessive suffix. After the Portuguese contact in 1505, the naming convention mixed with European naming conventions.

  • Family names (some used/some did not) + Personal names + European surname (Mostly Portuguese ones, rarely British. Only those who lived in maritime provinces influenced by this) + Sinhalese Surname

In future, I'll probably leave it to people who know more on the subject (as there's no way I'd be able to tell which of those names is the "surname", if any).     • I can understand that foreigners would find it difficult to identify the surname by contemporary Sinahala naming customs. You don't need to apologise for that. I recently learned that in Korean names, family name precedes given names only after watching the movie, Parasite. We are all more or less, unfamiliar with foreign naming conventions.   • The new version of MediaWiki will be on test wikis and MediaWiki.org from 1 February. It will be on non-Wikipedia wikis and some Wikipedias from 2 February. It will be on all wikis from 3 February (calendar).

Future changes

  • A change that was announced last year was delayed. It is now ready to move ahead:
    • The user group oversight will be renamed suppress. This is for technical reasons. This is the technical name. It doesn't affect what you call the editors with this user right on your wiki. This is planned to happen in three weeks. You can comment in Phabricator if you have objections. As usual, these labels can be translated on translatewiki (direct links are available) or by administrators on your wiki.

Reverted bot

Hi! You reverted my bot here as a cosmetic edit. This is not cosmetic - short descriptions are displayed in several different locations (search results, related articles, {{Annotated link}}) and the convention is to capitalise them. ― Qwerfjkltalk 07:08, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

I know but However, the term cosmetic edit is often used to encompass all edits of such little value that the community deems them to not be worth making in bulk, even though those edits might change the output HTML or readable text in subtle ways. I don't see the value in bulk changing the capitalisation on short descriptions, because most readers wouldn't know the difference, so I don't see how this adds any value. Edits to change articles to conform to MOS, or in this case WP:SDFORMAT, are not cosmetic. This bot was approved in a BRFA. It can be appealed through the appropriate venue. – Jonesey95 (talk) 14:54, 9 February 2022 (UTC)

A deletion alert for this article was posted a while ago by an account which is now blocked. That being said there are questions about the notability of this Wikipedia page. The article remains on Wikipedia primarily for the subject's notability as a researcher that may be the case, though arguably not. It appears that this page is on Wikipedia as a researcher, though the article seems to be written almost as a political candidate page/flyer. Looking at the subject's name on Wikipedia, though only appear as a political candidate on various pages. The subject of the page has only run as a candidate in multiple elections, finishing second. As a politician this subject does not meet WP:NOTABILITY at all. The work as a researcher and as an advocate does appear to be substantive. The question remains as to whether this really meets notability to remain on Wikipedia. If the conclusion is the article meets notability, it should be rewritten to a neutral tone and all deletion templates removed.

For my part I doubt this article is a notable one and it appears to be a page to boost political profile of a secondary political candidate. I would nominate to delete though I would love to hear others opinions to resolve. Words in the Wind(talk) 22:11, 11 February 2022 (UTC)

    I guess I will add, for anyone reading this who is unfamiliar with Canadian politics, that the "boost political profile of a secondary political candidate" assertion has no real basis - the riding he runs in hasn't flipped since 2000, and is in no serious danger of doing so in the 2025 federal election either. A Wikipedia article isn't going to make much of a difference to his political profile. -- asilvering (talk) 03:57, 19 February 2022 (UTC)
  • Keep: definitely meets GNG. There is sufficient significant coverage by independent, reliable, secondary sources including The Atlantic, The Guardian, and The National Post. No comment on any issues with the article, except to say that they aren't issues for AfD and none seem significant enough that WP:TNT would be reasonable.   • Advanced item In the AbuseFilter extension, the rmspecials() function has been updated so that it does not remove the "space" character. Wikis are advised to wrap all the uses of rmspecials() with rmwhitespace() wherever necessary to keep filters' behavior unchanged. You can use the search function on Special:AbuseFilter to locate its usage. [4]

Joseph, please stop attacking me personally, such as in sneaky snide remarks via the supposedly hidden edit summary, which isn't hidden from knowledgeable users.

I've never said any IP user had an "obligation to create an account." I only suggested that the person at issue "consider registering as a user."

In commenting on that suggestion, you in effect implied something that's not true. That's beneath the fairness expected of an administrator.

WP:AFC Helper News

Hello! I wanted to drop a quick note for all of our AFC participants; nothing huge and fancy like a newsletter, but a few points of interest.

  • AFCH will now show live previews of the comment to be left on a decline.
  • The template {{db-afc-move}} has been created - this template is similar to {{db-move}} when there is a redirect in the way of an acceptance, but specifically tells the patrolling admin to let you (the draft reviewer) take care of the actual move.

Short and sweet, but there's always more to discuss at WT:AFC. Stop on by, maybe review a draft on the way? Whether you're one of our top reviewers, or haven't reviewed in a while, I want to thank you for helping out in the past and in the future. Recent changes

  • Special:Nuke will now provide the standard deletion reasons (editable at MediaWiki:Deletereason-dropdown) to use when mass-deleting pages. This was a request in the 2022 Community Wishlist Survey. [5]
  • At Wikipedias, all new accounts now get the Growth features by default when creating an account. Communities are encouraged to update their help resources. Previously, only 80% of new accounts would get the Growth features. A few Wikipedias remain unaffected by this change. [6]
  • You can now prevent specific images that are used in a page from appearing in other locations, such as within PagePreviews or Search results. This is done with the markup class=notpageimage. For example, [[File:Example.png|class=notpageimage]]. [7]
  • There has been a change to the HTML of Special:Contributions, Special:MergeHistory, and History pages, to support the grouping of changes by date in the mobile skin. While unlikely, this may affect gadgets and user scripts. A list of all the HTML changes is on Phabricator.

Future changes

  • The software to play videos and audio files on pages will change soon on all wikis. The old player will be removed. Some audio players will become wider after this change. The new player has been a beta feature for over four years. [8][9]
  • Toolforge's underlying operating system is being updated. If you maintain any tools there, there are two options for migrating your tools into the new system. There are details, deadlines, and instructions on Wikitech. [10]
  • Administrators will soon have the option to delete/undelete the associated "talk" page when they are deleting a given page. An API endpoint with this option will also be available. This was a request from the 2021 Wishlist Survey.
