President Pohamba to get salary hike[edit]

President Hifikepunye Pohamba is to get a salary increase for the first time in seven years. The prime minister Nahas Angula on Tuesday motivated the presidential salaries and other benefits bill in the national assembly. Since the mid-2001, the head of states earned about N$2.1 million in total gross earnings per year,which include fringe benefits ,such being exempt for paying tax. This is divided as follow,1,68 million in cash and N$419177 in non-cash earnings per year, the president basic salary is about N$692465 a year.The president remuneration in the past has been decide on ad-hoc basis by the cabinet and there was no legal framework.The bill states that the salary of the president should be no more than 10% to 15% higher than that of the prime minister,which said to be a standard practice in South Africa,Kenya,Botswana and Australia,Angula salary stands at N$1.25 million,made up of N$720 174 in cash and in non-cash N$5389 999 per year.The bill which Angula said is a product of independent study,also seeks to "appreciate" the role of the first,Penehupfo Pohamba ,By paying her allowance,currently the first lady receives an annual allowance of N$60 000,a yearly entertainment allowance of N$50 000 in addition to other benefits. if the bill is approved,the first lady's allowance will equivalent to the annual salary of the deputy permanent secretary-a gross annual salary and benefits of 611 582.the bill also look at the issue of the president medical aid,savings,and post retirement housing benefits and allowance which are payable. Angula also motivated that the president pensions and other benefits amendment bill to be adopted,Act passed by parliament 2004,and it will all start with Pohamba.Pohamba is currently serving his second term as a president,a clause in the bill states that" a former president is entitled to be paid at a gratitude in an amount equal to the annual salary which was payable to such president immediately before ceasing to hold office for each term as a president"that means with his current basic salary at about N$692 265 a year,it means that he will get at twice that amount after having served two terms,under this bill,Pohamba and the future president will continue to be cover by the states medical schemes after retirement,received a furnished official resident anywhere in Windhoek,be eligible for telephone,water and electricity allowance and have two waiters,two domestic workers and two laundry persons,they will also get beneficiaries including beneficiaries of three vehicles ,former president already receives all these benefits ,Angula appealed for the changes to the bill not to be viewed as"action intended to benefit individual but as an exercise to promote transparency and good practices".This is all about the annual payment and allowance as an remuneration to the president and the former president of the republic of Namibia currently and in future presidents and some of the changes done to this bill mentioned above.
