Speedy deletion nomination of IRI, The CoSort Company
[edit]A tag has been placed on IRI, The CoSort Company, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, product, group, service or person and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become an encyclopedia article. Please read the guidelines on spam as well as Wikipedia:FAQ/Business for more information.
If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}}
to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. WuhWuzDat 21:32, 21 July 2009 (UTC)
FYI conflict of interest guideline
[edit]If you have a close connection to some of the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest. In keeping with Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy, edits where there is a conflict of interest, or where such a conflict might reasonably be inferred from the tone of the edit and the proximity of the editor to the subject, are strongly discouraged. If you have a conflict of interest, you should avoid or exercise great caution when:
- editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with;
- participating in deletion discussions about articles related to your organization or its competitors; and
- linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
Please familiarize yourself with relevant policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

Scuse the interruption
[edit]I passed through someone else's talk page and noticed this from you "1) the first commercial sort software provider off the mainframe; 2) with a host of firsts in that space alone (like full SQL join and aggregate functions outside the database for flat files, parallel sorting); 3) the only ISV with field-level encryption for flat files; 4) the only one sorting and converting huge LDIF and XML files; 5) the only one parsing data models to create test data; 6) the only one generating CJK test data. These would be notable things within the products listed, which is more than the other ISVs with listed products are saying. But to say these notable technical things might seem like so much product advertising, so it's like a catch 22." Being a nosy cow, I came over for a look at the article.
Seeing as you are asking for advice, I hope you don't mind, but here's some, just about your first paragraph:-
- According to its website, IRI software products are used by - yes, and according to the Acme Phishing Company's website, they have the best anti-phishing solution money can buy. You can in some circs use a company (or artist or musican's) website as a source, but only for facts such as lists of products, albums or whatever. You cannot use them for claims of notability
- "according to its website...." also falls foul of Wikipedia's rule about fudging claims that you cannot source. "Babe Ruth is listed in the 100 greatest baseball players" is a fact that you can source from whoever compiles the list. "Babe Ruth is considered by some to be one of the greatest..." is weasel words
If you could change that to something like this, you have got more chance of success -
"Innovative Routines International (IRI), Inc. is an American software company, notable for being the first commercial sort software provider off the mainframe with full full SQL join and aggregate functions outside the database for flat files, parallel sorting [1]. It is currently the only ISV with field level encryption for flat files, capable of sorting and converting 100Gb XML files and generating CJK test data[2] IRI software is used by Pan-Galactic Airlines[3], the HongKong and Shanghai Bank [4]

Hope this is of some help. Elen of the Roads (talk) 19:29, 30 July 2009 (UTC)
That sounds like terrific advice, and it is MUCH appreciated, especially because it's exactly what we'd been asking for. It's unfortunate that the same rules evidently did not apply to the competitor article mentioned in the chat, but we will endeavor to remedy IRI's accordingly. I hope you'll take another look at a sandbox link in the near future and let me know what you think. Thanks again! Jtree09 (talk) 19:17, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
- If you notice, the Syncsort article cites its website for facts - over 90 of the Fortune 100 companies - not potential weasels like "the world's largest airlines, banks etc". It would be better if that sentence could be more factual. Other than that, I note you have added many references, so have a significant chance of keeping this version. If you have a word with the admin that deleted (Hersfold) to check that they haven't put any block on recreating, you can move it back into mainspace.
As an aside, I note that DrugLogic has been tagged with a no-notability tag.Elen of the Roads (talk) 20:53, 4 August 2009 (UTC)
Hello again. Could you please let me know what you think now of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Jtree09 ? I tried to follow your advice with different wording and available references. Jtree09 (talk) 19:31, 6 August 2009 (UTC)
Re: Another look
[edit]I'm sorry, but this is still advertising. The article needs to focus on why the company itself is notable, not serve as a listing of all their products and their features. I don't see that there's much of a difference between the version you have now and the version that was deleted.
If you don't mind my asking, do you by chance work for this company? Hersfold (t/a/c) 20:10, 1 September 2009 (UTC)
Thanks again for the feedback. As stated in prior chats on this subject, I've worked there for 20+ years and have posted a request for another author to take over (to no avail). The interest is simply to have an accurate, neutral, and compliant piece posted, similar to other equally notable companies in this space. For example, the Syncsort article which has lasted for some time, despite what appears to be meeting your objections that my article attempts to overcome. I would be most grateful for specific advice on how to modify the IRI piece to meet your qualifications. Please advise Jtree09 (talk) 18:56, 3 September 2009 (UTC)
- Hersfold, this user came to the IRC help channel today, and I spent a considerable time helping them to improve the proposed article. Following various edits and discussions, and working specifically on COI concerns, I am now happy that it is 'acceptable', and I am therefore taking the responsibility for making it live. Cheers, Chzz ► 16:18, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

How references work
[edit]Simple references
[edit]These require two parts;
- a)
Chzz is 98 years old.<ref> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> He likes tea. <ref> [http://www.nicecupofteaandasitdown.com Tea website] </ref>
- b) A section called "References" with the special code "{{reflist}}";
== References == {{reflist}}
(an existing article is likely to already have one of these sections)
To see the result of that, please look at user:chzz/demo/simpleref. Edit it, and check the code; perhaps make a test page of your own, such as user:Jtree09/reftest and try it out.
Named references
[edit]Chzz was born in 1837, <ref name="MyBook"> "The book of Chzz", Aardvark Books, 2009. </ref> in Footown.<ref name="MyBook"/>
Note that the second usage has a / (and no closing ref tag). This needs a reference section as above; please see user:chzz/demo/namedref to see the result.
Citation templates
[edit]You can put anything you like between <ref> and </ref>, but using citation templates makes for a neat, consistent look;
Chzz has 37 Olympic medals. <ref> {{Citation | last = Smith | first = John | title = Olympic medal winners of the 20th century | publication-date = 2001 | publisher = [[Cambridge University Press]] | page = 125 | isbn = 0-521-37169-4 }} </ref>
Please see user:chzz/demo/citeref to see the result.
For more help and tips on that subject, see user:chzz/help/refs.
Disambiguations
[edit]Hi there,
I noted some more things on IRC, but you might've left...
- [17:53] <chzz_> Florida08 Some of the links are links to 'disambiguation pages', JCL, SAS, DEC, VMS, ETL, AES, CSV. They don't link to the correct specific article. Can you fix them, like e.g. this?
- [17:53] <chzz_> [[Job Control Language|JCL]]
- [17:55] <chzz_> ooh, microfocus, Florida08; I used to work for them, once upon a time
- [17:55] <chzz_> Good old COBOL/2
- [17:57] <chzz_> Florida08 re. disambiguation - also, "open systems" and "join" - click 'em, you'll see what I mean
