Hi, I became very interested in the origins of the Roma as I am of Romany descent after looking into the Sara-La-Kali connection with the Hindu goddess Kali and the similarities between the worship of the to two. The day of the pilgrimage honouring Sarah is May 24; her statue is carried down to the sea on this day to re-enact her arrival in France. The ceremony in Saintes-Maries closely parallels the annual processions in Kolkata India, the country in which I believe the Roma originated, when statues of the Indian goddess Durga, also named Kali, are immersed into water. Durga, the consort of Shiva, usually represented with a black face.

I have been to India several times and see my family characteristics both Roma and Irish (west coast)in the faces everywhere but especially in Rajahstan I've read a little and have also witnessed myself similarities in the costume of some Roma notably the Kalderash of Poland.

My ultimate aim is to physically retrace the Roma's journey from my front door back to the Thar desert. It is believed that once reaching what is now the Pakistani border that the Roma then spread which is why this journey is obviously possible had they simply gone one way directly west due to obvious reasons this journey would not be possible.

I would be grateful of any input however tenuous it may seem thank you.
