Look at WP:RS to see what sort of references count for notability. Others can be used for more info. Can't remember what article this is - very long hard day - but if I've tagged it for references to be improved, you usually get a while. Be careful with IMDb - the info is largely user supplied and it doesn't count as reliable. I've seen cases where someone was citing IMDb to back something up, and the info cited was about someone totally different. It was even physically impossible for it to be right in one case. Why can't I edit some particular pages?

Some pages that have been vandalized repeatedly are semi-protected, meaning that editing by new or unregistered users is prohibited through technical measures. If you have an account that is four days old and has made at least 10 edits, then you can bypass semi-protection and edit any semi-protected page. Some pages, such as highly visible templates, are fully-protected, meaning that only administrators can edit them.

What are references, sources, and citations all about?

All claims must be supported by a book, website, or news organization independent of the subject of the article. The source must be reliable, meaning it cannot be a blog, MySpace page, or personal website. How do I insert a reference into an article?

For inline references:

1. Do a search on Ask.com, Google, or your preferred search engine for the subject of the article that you want to put a reference in.

Thanks for helping me sort out those pages I started (I also started one for makeup winner Ve Niell) I've been a long time user of Wikipedia, just never decided to start an account till recently! Anyway, I decided to put up pages for those that seemed like they can use one. Sadly the sound cats don't have all the links so I don't know if all of them are there. (And of course I've found tons of wrong links, someone else found a intresting one on makeup for Hook though it looked like where instead of leading to the makeup artist it lead to a, well an adult star) Names that I might add soon: Craig Berkey (Sound artist who works with the Coens); Ben Snow (Multiple nominated visual effects artist); Cheryl Carasik (Multiple nominated art director); John Bright (Costume designer who use to work with Jenny Beaven); Janet Patterson (Muliple nominated costume designer); As well as quite a few makeup artist who have no pages yet. No problem, I am currently am skimming through the years looking at films that might need links. What is annoying is how case sensitive it might be (so a film titled "The House of so and so" would have to have the of not captilized) The annoying years are the late 60s to the late 70s where tons of info is missing. Yes, I agree. But, it's a lot better now than it was before. New stuff gets added all the time ... and old stuff gets improved all the time. Well I did help somewhat with a page that someone started a few weeks ago but never did much for, for a 1936 film called "Texas Rangers" Right now I'm continuing looking for names that might link to something else. (like the lady who did the costumes for Raiders of the Lost Ark had a diffrent name on the year she was nominated so she was not linked.) Also I'm finding some foriegn noms under a diffrent title. Hi. (1) Did you see the Oscar charts that I added to your Talk Page? They are related to the earliest/oldest Oscar winners and nominees.

(2) Did you see this page: Talk:Academy Award for Best Actor#Non-fictional roles ...? It lists the non-fictional roles (real people) for Best Actor.

(3) Some of your idea are good ... but some do not deserve/warrant a separate brand-new page. And, if the page were created, it might get deleted. So, I'd hate to see all that work go to waste. As far as a page for Oscar winners/nominees playing non-fictional roles ... I can see that going either way. There are strong arguments (A) that it can have its own page (like many of the other Oscar-related pages) ... but there are also strong arguments that it (B) should just be a separate section in the Best Actor article (or whichever). If I were to be asked, I would vote for "A" ... a separate article ... where we can list all the awards on one page (Actor, Actress, etc.) ... rather than split them up between the four different acting articles.

(4) As far as looking for someone to create these pages ... I have 2 suggestions. (1) Post a note on the Talk Page of, say, Best Actor (or whatever page). (2) If you scan the Academy Award pages, you will see a lot of the same editors who contribute to -- and are interested in -- Academy Award information. Hi. Thanks. Yes, I think it might be best for now to include it on the main page of the award ... and not create a separate article. As far as reporting a guy for vandalism ... yes, I am sure that there is a way to do that. I don't know the exact procedure, however, as I have never done that. Whenever you need help or have a question, you can type this on your Talk Page: {{helpme}}. If you type that on your Talk Page, along with your question, other editors will get the "help needed" message and will reply to you on your Talk Page. I hope that's helpful. To use that tag, you need to type the words "helpme" (without using the quotation marks) ... but you need to also type in the opening and closing "{{" and "}}" symbols. In other words, type this: {{helpme}} How do I report an editor who keeps vandalizing the Academy Award article? (or something to that effect) I hope this helps. Thanks! (Joseph A. I notice that you tagged the page Capacitive Micromachined Ultrasonic Transducers for speedy deletion with the reason "an article about a company, corporation, organization, or group that does not credibly indicate the importance or significance of the subject". While that's a valid reason for speedy deletion in general, this page does not qualify for speedy deletion under that criterion because this article is not about a company, it's about a type of transducer. If you still want the page to be deleted, please consider tagging it with a speedy deletion template which does apply, redirecting it to another page, or using the WP:AFD process. Your tag was good; don't worry. If you're manually tagging G10, you need to blank the page (which you did), but you need to put {{db-attack|blanked=yes}}; if you don't you have to edit it and remove a random space that gets inserted before it works properly. BLP proposed deletion of Lily Alone

I removed the BLP prod tag you placed on Lily Alone, as the article subject is a book, not a biography of a living person, and therefore cannot be deleted via BLP prod. Tagging

Can I suggest having a good read through Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion? Getting the right tag isn't always easy - I cock up at times, so do we all. But getting the wrong one can lead to it being declined, and then no-one else checking why it should REALLY have gone. Are you working manually or with a tool? If with a tool, you might be hitting the wrong button (or whatever they have). If manually, which is how I work, you may need to bookmark this link and check through it. At first, I went through it every time, and copy and pasted the templates. Later I found I could remember the ones I used most - and just looked up the others. I'm not trying to put you off, just to help you get things right (which saves everyone time...). A tip if doing it manually (if you'll forgive the expression) is to use the names not the numbers. I know db-spam, db-talk and so on, but I couldn't tell you what A6 was (apart from being a rather nice Audi or a small piece of paper...). Sam Bond's Garage

Just a note about your Prod tag. This article is about a bar and music venue in a former garage that happens to be named after someone named "Sam Bond". But it's not actually about Sam Bond, nor is he mentioned in the article (I'm not even sure he's a real person), so it's not subject to BLP. Improper speedy

This edit, tagging Maxwell jordan for speedy deletion for "no credible assertion of notability" was invalid. A "credible assertion of notability" is made in the article, calling Jordan "the pre-eminent researcher and independent scholar in the fields of occult & religious philosophy". While this claim may turn out to be complete bollocks, it is credible on its face, and requires a more deliberative process than speedy deletion. G11 speedies

I don't think Batchalorking and Dj zombie were G11s - they were clear A7s, as they just gave a name and a link, with no assertion of importance, but they were not promotional. WP:CSD#G11 is only for "Pages that are exclusively promotional", and is rather over-used: if there is some promotional element but A7 also applies it is preferable to use that, to avoid a situation where the author takes out a few adjectives, says "now it's not promotion" and has to be told, in effect, "OK, you pass G11, but gotcha under A7!" There is good advice for speedy taggers at WP:10CSD and WP:A7M. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 19:02, 11 February 2011 (UTC)

Welcome pages

Another point about speedy tagging: if the author is a newbie with nothing on their talk page, it is useful to give them a Welcome paragraph before the speedy notice - it is less WP:BITEy, and gives them useful links which may help them avoid the same mistake next time. A useful one is {{firstarticle|<article name>}} - you can see what it looks like at User talk:IAmDee. It has one oddity: it automatically adds your signature, so for once you need not to put four tildes after it. Keep up the good work - New Page Patrol needs all the eyes it can get! And just for you, an extra bonus tip: If you use Wikipedia:Twinkle to help you with your patrolling (and you really, really want to be doing this because it makes these things so much easier :), it will automatically add a welcome template to the user talk page before the speedy deletion notification if the author doesn't have anything on their talk page. You can add it from the "Gadgets" tab in your preferences. Then just click the new "TW" tab at the top of every article. Clicking CSD will bring up the list of CSD criteria, and clicking one of those will automatically tag the page with the appropriate template and take care of notifying the user. You can also PROD articles or take them to AfD in the same way by choosing the appropriate options from the menu. On user talk pages, the "Warn" option lets you easily give warning templates for virtually everything. It's a super handy tool, and I'd say most regular new page and recent changes patrollers use. Another tip

Peter James Perry O'Rourke wrote his first maths text book at three. Oh yeh? He created the yoyo. But he was born in 1981. Yoyos were around in 500 BCE. It's a hoax. Your tag is correct, however. He is definitely non-notable. I've put the hoax tag on. Tagging in CSD isn't all that easy sometimes. You were right to stick to the lesser level, though, if you weren't sure. With one like this, look closely. A maths book at three? There'd already be an article about this prodigy. Google (or Wiki search) yoyo. I'm old enough to know that they were around before 1981. You mightn't be. It's better to take a moment and possibly miss the chance to tag it because you're beaten to it. (Unless you are having a tagging race with someone - which is really not recommended. Keep it up - you will learn loads this way. But take a bit of time. Look at what the article says. I'm a speed reader - but I can sometimes miss something. If you're not, you must take time. the page for "Mohammed Mamdouh" appears to be on delete notice with your edits, I try to add sources, it blocks my ip... like imdb page etc

That's because imdb isn't a very good source to link to. Some parts of it are good, like the writing credits marked with "WGA" that are supplied directly by the Writers Guild of America (where applicable), and the MPAA ratings reasons, where they appear, that are supplied directly by the Motion Picture Association of America. The rest of it, though, isn't very good:

1. Any potentially contentious material about living persons (BLPs)
2. The IMDb message boards, which are inherently not reliable.
3. The user comments for each title, which are pure user-generated content.
4. Sections written in wiki-style with minimal editorial control. Those would be the FAQs for particular titles (not the database FAQ), the parents guides, and the plot synopses (not to be confused with the plot outlines or plot summaries, which are subject to editorial control).
5. Newsgroup reviews, which are archived Usenet postings.
6. The trivia and goofs sections that are based on user submissions.
7. The recommendations.

So many people were posting references to the "bad" sections of it that finally it was decided to block references to "most" parts of it. But the good parts are easily found elsewhere. You can also try using one of the templates found on this page: IMDb templates. What other websites did you want to link to? this was just a woefully incomplete article, not a promotional article. Since we regard all colleges (including community colleges) as appropriate for an article, I did not delete it. Please re-read WP:CSD and only use the deletion tags when the really apply--there are other ways of dealing with articles that need improvement, such as giving advice to the author. Don't tag too quickly

Hi. {{db-hoax}} was not an appropriate tag at Fear the Beer, when the article just repeated the words of the title. That is covered by {{db-nocontent}}; but more importantly, you should not have tagged the article only one minute after it was created by a newbie author. Many new authors start off hesitantly, and it is extremely discouraging for them to see a speedy tag pop up while they are thinking about their second sentence. If I had seen that as soon as you tagged it, I would have applied a {{hasty}} template, but 25 minutes had gone by and the author had gone, probably never to return. We have an unfortunately well earned, but unnecessary, reputation for being unfriendly to new users. Please read WP:BITE, and wait at least 10 - 15 minutes before tagging as A1 or A3 a very short new article. JohnCD (talk) 21:31, 14 February 2011 (UTC)

Hoax

I tagged the Foddio Trio as a hoax - it was a real load of rubbish and has gone as vandalism - and put a personal attack warning (level 1} on OpheliaEscaulus. I've removed most of her post here. It happens. When it does, it usually means you were right... Another tip: try shadowing a regular patroller and just see what they tag and work out why (and then see what happens...). It's less painful than charging in and finding out you weren't right. And never be afraid to ask. If someone gets in while you're asking, so what? the job's done and that's the thing. Use Google on suspected hoaxes. I usually do at least three searches per hoax. I can't remember getting knocked back on one yet. Peridon (talk) 15:26, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

Once again - do a quick Google. It's not a points race. Sometimes you can even find someone has tagged wrongly while you were Googling, and you can then either change the tag or remove it - giving your reason in the edit summary, of course. The example I quote is 'Bobble-head doll syndrome'. I mean, it's so obviously a hoax. But it wasn't. It is a rare condition, but real. The object here is to get accuracy. The object of some people outside is to get wrong stuff in either because they are vandals or because they are saboteurs. I suspect some of the better hoaxes are sabotage - being planted so that they can be publicly exposed to show how lousy we are at catching them. Until you really get good at them, ask for advice or leave 'em. Someone will catch them. The new stuff patrolling is way better now. Peridon (talk) 15:41, 15 February 2011 (UTC)

One more thing - when you tag or edit, do use the edit summary. Just put db-hoax, prod blp, or typo if it's simple, but explain concisely if it's a bit more complex. It saves going into prevs when checking what's going on. (I put db-spam if it's not 200% blatantly obvious, and just spam if it is. Just a personal thing.) The article has now been deleted, so you may not have a clear recollection. You had tagged the article for deletion under WP:CSD#A7 (notability), but you blanked the content of the article (which, admittedly, was less than completely flattering). Page blanking is only supposed to be used in the case of a blatant attack page, in which case the proper tag to apply is {{db-attack}}. Properly tagging pages gets them the proper attention -- attack pages tend to get deleted more quickly than merely non-notable pages. Speedy Deletion and New Users

I object to your use of the speedy deletion tag within the first few hours of an articles life. As a new user of Wikipedia (with regard to writing articles) it was a surprise to see your request in my talk page and the article I constructed. As it happens I didn't have time to write more information on that article and was planning on returning to it later, your instant and aggressive stance made me think twice about contributing to Wikipedia. I appear don't appear to be the only person on WIkipedia with these concerns either... If an administrator moves an article to another title without a redirect, the article will still show up on Special:NewPages as an unpatrolled article; however, when you click on it the article doesn't exist. Pages blanked by their author

Hi. If a page is completely blank, you need to have a look at the history. Often, as with Revd Professor David Wilkinson and Trimammium just now, it has been blanked by its author, probably because he has seen a speedy or copyvio notice and realises it is inappropriate. In that case, don't tag it {{db-nocontent}} (though that is true) but {{db-author}} or {{db-g7}} author requests deletion, and there is no need to give the author a notice of speedy deletion. What is worse and often happens (but not what you did here) is when the author is given a vandalism warning for the blanking. Regards, JohnCD (talk) 18:12, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Lumprachaun

Yes, you were right to tag it as a load of rubbish, but it had someone's name in it as an example of the creature - therefore it is an attack. (I've blanked it and tagged it.) (Same with Porn gorillas.) I would suggest suggest again you shadow one or more of us to see what we do. I did quite a bit of watching when I started on New Accounts. I looked at what someone had tagged, and worked out why. And I kept a copy of Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion to hand for quite some time. (I still use it if not sure, but can remember the ones I use most - spam, bio, hoax, inc, and vandalism.) Spend a little time without tagging, but just watching. imdb

Perhaps rather than nominate an article for proposed deletion saying it needs imdb references at least, you could look for the imdb reference yourself and add it for a start, if it's there. If it isn't, as seems to be the case for at least some of the articles you nominated for deletion, you should say that; it facilitates the necessary deletion. I've deleted some of your nominated articles where I did fail to verify on imdb. Ideally, one should look further before nominating or deleting, but I myself do not always do so if there appears to chance of notability. I've seen the discussion there NPP is an essential, and t's great that you like to do it. I still try to do some occasionally, along with everything else; I find my accuracy decreases sharply after the first 100 or so: what happens with me, is that I delete an excessive number of articles--seeing so many bad article inclines me to see everything as being bad. Other people will show other symptoms. The way I look at it, is the need to balance getting it all done, with the need to get it right--to tag the appropriate issues, send the proper notices, to make sure the notice are personalized, to sometimes make some easy fixes oneself to save work for other people later on. It's great that you like to do it, but there is no , and I urge you not to go too long or too fast. On the 23rd, you were going much too fast. An article such as Mormon Literature & Creative Arts should have been tagged for having no third party sources, and Norfolk Christian Football League as unsourced, and probably also as possibly not notable, to look at the first two I happened to check. If these problems are not caught immediately, they may not be noticed. I'm not tagging them myself right now, so you can see them. There's also the matter of indicating articles about subjects which are clearly not-notable , like Brawely Middle School--middle schools are almost never notable and are merged to the district or other jurisdiction. I don't think you[['ve been tagging or nominating for deletion excessively, but rather, not being sufficiently critical. DGG ( talk ) 01:56, 28 February 2011 (UTC)

I agree, it appears that Kamkek typically marks most articles as patrolled without addressing any of the issues with the article (either by fixing them or by tagging them for cleanup). This is highly problematic, especially considering the sheer number of articles he is marking as patrolled. I've recently tried to start a page that lists the minimum checks that patrollers should be doing on new articles, perhaps it would be helpful in this case although it is still a work in progress. Kamkek, please see User:Snottywong/NPP checklist for ideas on how to more thoroughly patrol new articles. The point of WP:NPP is quality, not quantity. —SW— ^babble 19:23, 4 March 2011 (UTC)

Screencast for new NPP tool design?

Hello. This is Ian Baker. I'm a developer over at the Wikimedia Foundation.

tl;dr: We’re designing a much-improved UI for NPP tools, and we’re seeking guidance—and hopefully, screencasts of your NPP workflow—from expert New Page Patrollers like yourself. We’re asking for this so we can see (literally) what actions you take during patrolling which could be better supported through software.

I'm contacting you because, according to our statistics, you're a particularly active New Page Patroller on the English Wikipedia. Here at the WMF, we're working on a design for a much-improved NPP user interface. We hope that it will (as part of a larger strategy) address many outstanding issues in the article creation process, while also providing a more modern, streamlined and efficient UX for patrollers.

To do this successfully, we are relying upon the guidance of our most experienced patrollers. I'm sending this message to the ten most prolific patrollers in 2011, and a few other people who've been participating actively in this discussion.

Specifically, I'm hoping you can take a few minutes to record a screencast of yourself doing NPP. We're looking for a 10-15 minute session, but more is okay if you feel it's needed. Ideally, you'd first walk us through your process, explaining as you go, and then switch to doing NPP at your usual pace.

Our preliminary examination of this feature has shown that many experienced patrollers have evolved their own specially-tailored interface and workflow, often using external tools and plugins. Making an interface that works well will require understanding those tools and the motivation for using them. However, even if you haven't done that, observing your NPP technique will still be valuable, giving us insights into what factors inform your judgement, how you use the existing interface, and how long NPP generally takes an expert patroller such as yourself.

If you'd like to help, great! I've posted a set of instructions over at the relevant thread on the Article Creation Workflow talk page, which should get you everything you need to know. If something's missing or you have a question, post it there. That's also the place to go if you want to learn more about the reasoning behind this request.

I understand that people have differing expectations of privacy with regard to their own computer and voice. Therefore, you can either post this screencast publicly (place a link in the talk page above) or if you'd prefer, send it to me privately at ian@wikimedia.org.

This new project is dedicated to improving the Wikipedia coverage of the history, works, people, places, events, etc, that are associated with the cinema, theatre and arts of Africa, African countries, the carribbean, and the diaspora. Furthermore, In the months of October and November, the WikiProject is organizing a global on-wiki contest and edit-a-thon tagged: The Months of African Cinema. AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.
