Help me!

[edit]

I am brand-new to Wikipedia. I’ve been reading the wiki and making some small changes here and therefore as an anonymous user for a while, but I’m starting to be interested in making significant contributions. I have some questions before I get started:

  • Am I allowed to upload a photograph of myself on my user page? The photo is mine, but it’s not officially copyrighted.
  • Why do some pages of a certain general topic have big notices that appear at the top when editing them? Can I put one of these above my user page and talk page? If so, how?
  • Why do some pages have a “View source” tab instead of an “Edit” tab?
  • I’ve noticed that in some discussions, editors can reply directly to another by typing “@<username>“ and the user seemingly gets notified. What is this and how does it work?
  • What are “categories” at the bottom of a page?

Thank you. — Kay Marie Talk 19:43, 1 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Old Trails Bridge

[edit]

I tried to move the contents of the page Old Trails Bridge to Old Trails Arch Bridge, as there is another pipeline bridge right next to the arch bridge that is a suspension bridge. However, for some reason I couldn’t create the new article and paste the contents there, even though registered users can create new articles. Help? — Kay Marie Talk 16:13, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not seeing any indication that the pipeline bridge is called the "Old Trails Bridge", and additionally it is not called the "Old Trails Arch Bridge", so I don't think there is any confusion and thus the page shouldn't be moved. Further discussion should take place at Talk:Old Trails Bridge so that other interested editors will be able to see the conversation.
On a related note to your post, it is improper to copy/paste a page in order to change the title. Doing so breaks the attribution history and such page "moves" will be deleted. If you want more help, change the {{help me-helped}} back into a {{help me}}, stop by the Teahouse, Wikipedia's live help channel, or the help desk to ask someone for assistance. Primefac (talk) 16:50, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Primefac: See http://bridgehunter.com/ca/san-bernardino/old-trails-arch/. That link clearly states that the name of the pipeline bridge is the Old Trails Arch Bridge. Additionally, many, many sources refer to it as the Old Trails Bridge, including Google Maps. — Kay Marie Talk 16:53, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot create pages

[edit]

I thought that the above might just be a one-time incident, but upon investigating further, I’ve realized that I cannot create any pages, even though registered editors can do that. Is this is a technical bug? If so, where/to whom do I report it? — Kay Marie Talk 20:59, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That's not a bug. See WP:ACTRIAL. Huon (talk) 21:07, 2 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
