Unsourced birth dates

Hi. I wanted to explain why I reverted a change you made to Lauri Hendler. In this edit, you added a birth date, but you didn't cite a reliable source. Wikipedia has strict rules on content in biographies of living persons because this can impact real peoples' lives. Please be aware that many sites on the internet purport to give information about celebrities, but few of them of reliable. Sites like the IMDb use user-generated content, and they should not be cited in biographical articles. Similarly, celebrity gossip websites should not be used because most of them don't have a history of fact checking or publishing corrections. Fan sites and blogs are self-published and have no editorial control. We also can't use primary documents, such as government birth databases or genealogical websites (which are also typically user-generated, as above). This means that the number of available sources is quite slim, and we often have to either go without this information or wait until a source like Entertainment Weekly or the BBC publishes an interview that includes a birth date. If you're not sure whether a source is reliable, you can ask at Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 03:04, 29 June 2023 (UTC)

Your GA nomination of Samuel Wilber Hager

The article Samuel Wilber Hager you nominated as a good article has passed ; see Talk:Samuel Wilber Hager for comments about the article, and Talk:Samuel Wilber Hager/GA1 for the nomination. Well done! If the article has never appeared on the Main Page as a "Did you know" item, and has not appeared within the last year either as "Today's featured article", or as a bold link under "In the news" or in the "On this day" prose section, you can nominate it within the next seven days to appear at DYK. Bolded names with dates listed at the bottom of the "On this day" column do not affect DYK eligibility. Please stop undoing my edits

Dude please stop messing with my wiki page, I’m trying to get a corporate job and am trying to scrub my wiki of anything that would cast me in a bad light. Please stop touching it. 2600:1700:31E0:3F8F:1C49:2A3C:33BA:6BD0 (talk) 16:49, 20 September 2023 (UTC)

Please stop removing information from the Louis Smolka article. Please know that Wikipedia is not censored for the benefit of any particular group or person. FatCat96 (talk) 01:22, 21 September 2023 (UTC)
You are being unreasonably idealistic right now. I am not asking you to scrub the internet. I understand you want wikipedia to be a beacon of truth and you may add it back if it becomes pertinent, but I don’t think it has any relevance to anyone’s understanding of theetruth 2600:1700:31E0:3F8F:44F2:20DA:5CF4:6849 (talk) 15:13, 21 September 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for creating Hiram, Kentucky. Are you able to locate a source supporting that anyone ever lived in Hiram? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 18:55, 26 September 2023 (UTC)

Yes, its page on the GNIS identifies it as a populated place. If you go to Google Earth and find Hiram, you can clearly see that there are people living there. FatCat96 (talk) 02:11, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
Maps and GNIS cannot be used as proof that a place is populated, per WP:NGEO. Is the something in a book or reliable source showing that people have lived here? Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 13:13, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
The book says that Hiram had a post office for over 20 years, it also says that it was a coal camp, which means that people have and continue to live there. I'm not sure how reliable this is, but it gives an estimated population for the community, and this source gives demographics. FatCat96 (talk) 15:08, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
Neither of those are reliable sources. I also wasn't able to find a reliable source to support that Hiram ever had a population. This source said it had a post office, and was a railroad stop. I'll PROD the article, unless you object. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 16:37, 27 September 2023 (UTC)
A PROD is not needed. I live near Hiram, and I have to drive past the community just about twice a week. There are obviously people living there. The community has several churches, several houses, and a gas station. Now, I have given you every reason to believe that there are people living there. FatCat96 (talk) 00:11, 28 September 2023 (UTC)
Why not just take a photo of the place next time you drive through? Schwede66 17:10, 17 November 2023 (UTC)

Rollback granted

Hi FatCat96. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Please keep the following things in mind while using rollback:

  • Being granted rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle. It just adds a [Rollback] button next to a page's latest live revision - that's all. It does not grant you any additional "status" on Wikipedia, nor does it change how Wikipedia policies apply to you.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear and unambiguous cases of vandalism only. Never use rollback to revert good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war, and it should never be used in a content-related dispute to restore the page to your preferred revision. If rollback is abused or used for this purpose or any other inappropriate purpose, the rights will be revoked.
  • Use common sense. If you're not sure about something, ask!

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 13:47, 4 October 2023 (UTC)

Kentucky connection and quick question

Hi FatCat96, I noticed you are from the Appalachian side of Kentucky. I have occasion to be in that area as my retired parents currently reside in the town of Berea, Kentucky. Small world!

Quick question: as I am new I'm just learning but in your instructional blurb you mention an option to click a 'New Section' link at the top of this page but it appears that it currently is called 'Add Topic', is that correct? Thehoneybear (talk) 20:37, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

Hi and thanks for the question! I usually don't meet too many other editors from or related to Eastern Kentucky. To add a new topic to a talk page, you just click the 'Add Topic' button between the 'edit' and 'view history' button. Wishing you a good day! FatCat96 (talk) 02:17, 7 October 2023 (UTC)

Reverted change at James Farish page

Thanks for your notification that you undid my edit at https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=James_Farish&diff=prev&oldid=1178930523 because you considered it unconstructive. I must say I am bewildered by this reaction. I did provide an edit summary "Undid obvious vandalism", and if you look at the revision which I undid (i.e. the one where a one-time editor had added the sentence "Rumor has it that he has [sic - we're talking about someone who lived in the 1830ies] one of the largest phalluses in Bombay history") I think you might understand why I didn't elaborate any more on my reasons for qualifying this as vandalism. It is true that superficially it may have looked to you as if the statement I deleted was referenced, but if you look at either the quoted page on google books itself (which, unsurprisingly, contains no information of this kind whatsoever), or at the history of the James Farish page itself (where you will see that the editor whom I consider a vandal simply inserted the above-quoted sentence before a reference which had already been in the article before, and which only provides information on which a preceding sentence is based), you will see that there is absolutely no reason to believe the edit I removed was based on reliable sources, or indeed made with any other intention than that of making a childish dick joke. So you may understand why I am bewildered that what you chose to treat as vandalism would have been my removal of this sentence, rather than the addition of it last year. In any case I would ask you (as someone who in contrast to me is knowledgeable about the correct formalites of wikipedia editing) to consider removing the bit that I attempted to remove, or to explain to me what makes it a valid, non vandal edit that should not be removed. 2A01:C23:5D4C:8600:34B6:A570:DD6B:3E80 (talk) 21:33, 6 October 2023 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi FatCat96. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at the permissions page in case your user right is time-limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page or ask via the NPP Discord. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page, including checking for copyright violations using Earwig's copyright violation detector, checking for duplicate articles, and evaluating sources (both in the article, and if needed, via a Google search) for compliance with the general notability guideline.
  • Please review some of our flowcharts (1, 2) to help ensure you don't forget any steps.
  • Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. If you can read any languages other than English, please add yourself to the list of new page reviewers with language proficiencies. HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 21:47, 18 October 2023 (UTC)

HJ Mitchell A bit concerned here. New Page reviewer was just granted, and it is near impossible to miss the unambiguous copyvio at 2023 Venezuela election agreement. You don't even need to speak Spanish when the text says, "Below is the agreement signed by both parties, translated from Spanish to English". SandyGeorgia (Talk) 21:52, 19 October 2023 (UTC)
Hi @SandyGeorgia. I tried to run the article through Earwig, but it wouldn't work for me. I didn't want to tag it for speedy deletion without knowing for sure that it was a copyvio. I would also like for you to know that Venezuelan laws and proclamations are in the public domain. Hope this clears things up. Wishing you a happy and blessed day! FatCat96 (talk) 01:04, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
In which case, this should have been added. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 01:37, 20 October 2023 (UTC)
FatCat96 and HJ Mitchell I just remembered to return to this, after getting distracted for days. FatCat, my apologies for being unaware of (or forgetting) that this Venezuelan material was in the public domain. Because I rarely have occasion to cite the government, because of the issues with Venezuelan propaganda, the matter of public domain just wasn't on my radar, so I do owe you an apology, and hope your new page patrolling is going well. Regards, SandyGeorgia (Talk) 16:41, 5 November 2023 (UTC)

Pending changes reviewer granted

Hello. Your account has been granted the "pending changes reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on pages protected by pending changes. The list of articles awaiting review is located at Special:PendingChanges, while the list of articles that have pending changes protection turned on is located at Special:StablePages.

Being granted reviewer rights neither grants you status nor changes how you can edit articles. If you do not want this user right, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time.

November Articles for creation backlog drive

Hello FatCat96:

WikiProject Articles for creation is holding a month long Backlog Drive!
The goal of this drive is to reduce the backlog of unreviewed drafts to less than 2 months outstanding reviews from the current 4+ months. Bonus points will be given for reviewing drafts that have been waiting more than 30 days. The drive is running from 1 November 2023 through 30 November 2023.

You may find Category:AfC pending submissions by age or other categories and sorting helpful.

Barnstars will be given out as awards at the end of the drive.

There is a backlog of over 2500 pages, so start reviewing drafts. We're looking forward to your help! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:24, 31 October 2023 (UTC)

If I did something wrong, I would like to know the reason why my edit was reverted. I would correct my mistake (if there is one) and would contribute to Wikipedia accordingly.

Autopatrolled granted

Hi FatCat96, I just wanted to let you know that I have added the autopatrolled user right to your account. This means that pages you create will automatically be marked as 'reviewed', and no longer appear in the new pages feed. Autopatrolled is assigned to prolific creators of articles, where those articles do not require further review, and may have been requested on your behalf by someone else. It doesn't affect how you edit; it is used only to manage the workload of new page patrollers.

Since the articles you create will no longer be systematically reviewed by other editors, it is important that you maintain the high standard you have achieved so far in all your future creations. Please also try to remember to add relevant WikiProject templates, stub tags, categories, and incoming links to them, if you aren't already in the habit; user scripts such as Rater and StubSorter can help with this. As you have already shown that you have a strong grasp of Wikipedia's core content policies, you might also consider volunteering to become a new page patroller yourself, helping to uphold the project's standards and encourage other good faith article writers.

Feel free to leave me a message if you have any questions. Happy editing! HJ Mitchell | Penny for your thoughts? 20:54, 27 November 2023 (UTC)

Following that, New Page Patrol organized another backlog drive for articles in January 2024. The January drive started with 13,650 articles and reduced the backlog to 7,430 articles. Congratulations to JTtheOG, who achieved first place with 1,340 points in this drive.

Looking at the graph, it seems like backlog drives are one of the only things keeping the backlog under control. Another backlog drive is being planned for May. Feel free to participate in the May backlog drive planning discussion.

It's worth noting that both queues are gradually increasing again and are nearing 14,034 articles and 22,540 redirects. We encourage you to keep contributing, even if it's just a single patrol per day. Your support is greatly appreciated!

2023 Awards

Onel5969 won the 2023 cup with 17,761 article reviews last year - that's an average of nearly 50/day. There was one Platinum Award (10,000+ reviews), 2 Gold Awards (5000+ reviews), 6 Silver (2000+), 8 Bronze (1000+), 30 Iron (360+) and 70 more for the 100+ barnstar. Hey man im josh led on redirect reviews by clearing 36,175 of them. For the full details, see the Awards page and the Hall of Fame. Congratulations everyone for their efforts in reviewing!

WMF work on PageTriage: The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers deployed the rewritten NewPagesFeed in October, and then gave the NewPagesFeed a slight visual facelift in November. This concludes most major work to Special:NewPagesFeed, and most major work by the WMF Moderator Tools team, who wrapped up their major work on PageTriage in October. The WMF Moderator Tools team and volunteer software developers will continue small work on PageTriage as time permits.

Recruitment: A couple of the coordinators have been inviting editors to become reviewers, via mass-messages to their talk pages. If you know someone who you'd think would make a good reviewer, then a personal invitation to them would be great. Additionally, if there are Wikiprojects that you are active on, then you can add a post there asking participants to join NPP. Please be careful not to double invite folks that have already been invited.

Reviewing tip: Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages within their most familiar subjects can use the regularly updated NPP Browser tool.
