Hello, Kidnike03, and welcome to Wikipedia! Thank you for your contributions. I hope you like the place and decide to stay. Unfortunately, one or more of your edits have not conformed to Wikipedia's verifiability policy, and may be removed if they have not yet been. Wikipedia articles should refer only to facts and interpretations that have been stated in print or on reputable websites or other forms of media. Always remember to provide a reliable source for quotations and for any material that is likely to be challenged, or it may be removed. Wikipedia also has a related policy against including original research in articles. As well, all new biographies of living people must contain at least one reliable source.

If you are stuck and looking for help, please see the guide for citing sources or come to the new contributors' help page, where experienced Wikipedians can answer any queries you have! Jeff Dye

[edit]

Every so often, someone such as yourself comes here and creates an account specifically to edit the Jeff Dye article. Past examples of this include:

And every one of them suffers the same issues. They can't provide reliable and independent sources for information in the article. By independent, I mean sources that aren't Dye himself or someone/company who is trying to advertise their show or their affiliation with Dye. If The New York Times (for example) had written an article about Dye and his career, that would both be reliable and independent. But TBS or MTV or Comedy Central writing about Dye is not independent since he works for them. Of course they're going to provide a bio for him, they have a business relationship to make money on.

So, please, stop making the same mistake and find something from someone who isn't making anything off of Jeff Dye. Dismas|(talk) 01:00, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

will articles from online magazines work better?

Kidnike03 (talk) 02:59, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

What online magazines? Anyone can create their own e-zine. Blogs generally aren't considered reliable, so keep that in mind. See WP:SPS for more on that. Dismas|(talk) 03:07, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, and why not start the article at User:Kidnike03/Jeff Dye first and then you can work out all the issues before moving it to the live article space. Dismas|(talk) 03:09, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

thank you so much for your help. I am not sure how to start an article that way, however would a source such as this be viable??

Kidnike03 (talk) 03:12, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, that's one. Any more?
And starting an article from scratch is no different than what you were doing by replacing the redirect. Just click the link, put in your text and hit save. Dismas|(talk) 03:27, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

nice, I will switch to working in there.. i found this article referencing Just For laughs http://cityweekly.wehaa11.wehaaserver.com/utah/article-13147-jeff-dye.html

and this article refencing Extreme Makeover http://www.dailytidings.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20110907/NEWS02/109070310

or http://www.ktvl.com/articles/home-1201531-lindsay-team.html

also I am wondering if the first two sources (IMDB) are legit seeing as how that is only an online database but also must receive approval for content similar to wikipeida?

once again, thank you for the help

Kidnike03 (talk) 03:43, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The first one is okay but is brief. The second two could be used to cite his involvement in the show but doesn't add much to his notability. To establish a person's notability (WP:BIO), they should have "received significant coverage in reliable secondary sources that are independent of the subject." The Laugh Spin and City Weekly sources help with the "reliable secondary sources" and they are "independent" but is that "significant coverage"? Eh, sort of.
The last two sources, Daily Tidings and KTVL aren't about Dye, they're about the show and happen to mention Dye. So, while they can be used as references about his appearance on the show, they don't add to the "significant coverage".
I'd say that if you could get at least one more solid independent reference that is devoted to Dye (not just something mentioning him) then you'd be able to argue the case of his notability. Dismas|(talk) 04:21, 13 September 2011

OK, so this might be a reach, but i found this article where Jeff says he will be working on Extreme Makeover during an interview.

I actually work for New Wave Entertainment and we manage Jeff, he is asking us to get this page up so I really need to complete this task.

i also found this article which I think adds to his notoriety

http://www.seattlepi.com/ae/tv/article/A-moment-with-Jeff-Dye-comedian-1280736.php

once again, thank you so much, you have been very helpful

Kidnike03 (talk) 06:34, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, now I see. I was hoping that you were just a fan. Please see WP:AUTO. Dismas|(talk) 06:44, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

COI???

Kidnike03 (talk) 07:10, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WP:COI or Conflict Of Interest. Or were you looking for something other than a definition? Dismas|(talk) 07:15, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I was asking if that is why you referred me to the Auto page. Are you saying I cannot create his page? I think it's fairly neutral. Kidnike03 (talk) 07:17, 13 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I'm saying that it's best that you not. And Mr. Dye should be advised that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia and not an advertising medium for his career. There are some article review committees and such but I don't deal with them much at all. And I'll be busy for the next several days. For those two reasons, I'm going to ask for some assistance from another editor with this. Dismas|(talk) 17:21, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Kidnike03. If you are affiliated with some of the people, places or things you have written about in the article User:Kidnike03/Jeff Dye, you may have a conflict of interest or close connection to the subject.

All editors are required to comply with Wikipedia's neutral point of view content policy. People who are very close to a subject often have a distorted view of it, which may cause them to inadvertently edit in ways that make the article either too flattering or too disparaging. People with a close connection to a subject are not absolutely prohibited from editing about that subject, but they need to be especially careful about following the reliable sources and writing with as little bias as possible.

If you are very close to a subject, here are some ways you can reduce the risk of problems:

  • Avoid or exercise great caution when editing or creating articles related to you, your organization, or its competitors, as well as projects and products they are involved with.
  • Be cautious about deletion discussions. Everyone is welcome to provide information about independent sources in deletion discussions, but avoid advocating for deletion of articles about your competitors.
  • Avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or website of your organization in other articles (see Wikipedia:Spam).
  • Exercise great caution so that you do not accidentally breach Wikipedia's content policies.

Please familiarize yourself with relevant content policies and guidelines, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, verifiability of information, and autobiographies.

For information on how to contribute to Wikipedia when you have a conflict of interest, please see our frequently asked questions for organizations. Thank you. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:49, 14 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

There is a discussion at the conflict of interest noticeboard regarding your edits, please see here for the discussion. You are welcome to participate, thank you. -- Atama 17:30, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hey, saw you mentioned there. The article, as they've said, isn't bad. One thing I'd recommend is saying "As of 2011 Dye was" or "In 2011 Dye was" instead of "Currently, Dye is". Currently is too time dependent. Thanks! Jesanj (talk) 17:32, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I changed the wording and at the moment it is at Jeff Dye. Jesanj (talk) 17:47, 15 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thnaks so much for the help! This was my first article, wiki is a lot more complex than i thought. Kidnike03 (talk) 17:01, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article is now live. Now what?

[edit]

The Jeff Dye article is now live. This was accomplished because you could show that Dye was notable and not because he requested the article. Please inform Dye that Wikipedia is not a platform for advertising his career. And in the future, if you have any information that you feel should be added to the article, please put the {{requestedit}} template on the talk page (Talk:Jeff Dye) followed by the information that you feel should be added. When you do so, please also supply a reliable source for that information such as a news article. Thanks, Dismas|(talk) 16:46, 16 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]
