adoption stuff

[edit]

Hi there AMFilmsInc, Yes, I would be glad to adopt you. I have changed the box on your user page to show you are now adopted.

I did an analysis of your edits on Wikipedia to get an idea of your history here and your areas of interest and will give you some comments on that first.

Your interests are mostly music and gaming and I see you have already made a few contributions in those areas, thanks! Even small things help add to the project.

I see you also reverted some vandalism to the Lance Armstrong article, very good. You can also go to the talk page of the person who did the vandalism and leave them a warning, the page to read to learn about reverting vandalism is WP:VANDAL, it tells you how to revert or remove vandalism and also how to leave a warning on the user's talk page. If you leave a warning and they continue to vandalize, an admin can then block them later on. I see you also made a few inappropriate edits early on but none since then so no big deal.

You need to get in the habit of adding an Help:Edit summary whenever you edit a page. Even putting 'fixed typo,' or 'reply' is helpful. The 'Edit summary' page above will explain more about why this is important.

You asked about notability for new articles. The page you need to read is WP:NOTE that spells out in detail what Wikipedia considers notable for different subjects, it is different for new bands or schools or porn stars, but the basic requirement is that there are published, independent sources for proof of notability. As an example, a review in a music magazine would be a good source for a new band but a blog about music would probably not be. IMDB is not usually considered a reliable, independent source because anyone can edit there (also one reason Wikipedia is not considered a reliable source), so I could go there and say, "AMFilms is the greatest movie production company in the world because they have the best directors and all their flicks have hot babes with big tits." Maybe its true, but how do we know for sure? Now if Variety or Newsweek say the same thing I would probably believe it. See the difference? If you have a specific person or topic in mind with your notability question, let me know and I will be able to give you better advice.

As far as finding out if what you want to add to the page is already on the page without reading the page, nope, sorry, there is really no way. You just have to read it.

One more thing, I will probably answer most of your questions by having you first read the WP policy about that particular issue, there is really no other way to learn how things work here. I learned alot by hanging out at WP:AFD because the people !voting on the various articles being considered for deletion quote and refer to the applicable policies. Look at the articles then look at the arguments for and against deletion and you will quickly see what is and is not notable.

One other thing, when you post on a talk page that already has conversations on it, use the '+' tab rather than the 'edit' tab so that your comments are added to the bottom of the page. This keeps things in chronological order and is less confusing.

Alrighty then, if any of this is not clear or if you have other questions or want to give me the subject of an article you are considering writing, let me know. I have a special page for adoption talk here, put it on your watch list and post any questions that you want to ask me on that page rather than my regular talk page. I am putting a copy of this message there also--killing sparrows (chirp!) 00:21, 30 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

That helped a lot. I love your hilarious comparisons (Why AMFilmsInc is the best) and they make me laugh. Also, how do you have that little "Chirp" next to your name in the signature? AMFilmsInc 03:00, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Glad you got a laugh out of that! You can read all about creating a custom signature at WP:SIG. Are you at all familiar with HTML coding? Wikisigs use the same types of tags for color, font, size etc. If you open the edit window on this page and look at the code for my sig...

--killing sparrows (chirp!) 04:10, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

...you will see the tags I used. I don't really know all that much about it but I saw other sigs and looked at the code and just modified it for my use.

For instance, you could have yours like this...

AMFilmsIncand, action!

If you look closely at that sig in the edit window you can see that there are two wikilinks in there, one to your user page and one to your talk page.

You can change the colors and font and such with the appropriate tags. When you get the sig you want you have to go to your preferences tab at the top of the page and paste the code into the sig box and then check the 'Raw signature' box. Done!

Please do go to the WP:SIG page though and read it first because there are some things you cannot use in sigs and also overly long sigs with lots of code are frowned upon because they clutter up the edit box on discussion pages.

If you want to experiment you can create your own sandbox. Just type... User:AMFilmsInc/Cutting room floor (or /sandbox or /whatever)...into the search box. You will get a page that says no such page exists and there will be something like 'create this page' in red. Click that link and when the edit box comes up just start playing around and then click the 'save page' box at the bottom (don't forget to add an edit summary like 'creating user sandbox'), and. bingo!, you've created you own litterbox! Have fun!--killing sparrows (chirp!) 04:10, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

So, like this? [[User:AMFilmsInc|AMFilmsInc</font>[[User talk:AMFilmsInc|<font color="Green" > (and, action!)</font>]]]] 02:48, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Move the two brackets at the very end (right after the 'sup' at the end) and put them after the second AMFilmsInc in your User page link (just before the first 'font' tag) and you've got it. --killing sparrows (chirp!) 04:12, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
