Good to see yor name popping up in my watchlist. Thanks for working on Kiwi bird articles. Maybe I'll meet you at a meet up someday. :) Sabine's Sunbird talk 06:27, 24 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Sabine's Sunbird:Thanks for your message :) I'm very new to Wikipedia, I went to the WikiBlitz at Auckland Museum last weekend, created my login, and am now keen to add images to NZ Land Vertebrate pages. Kiwifiwi (talk) 00:52, 25 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Be sure to check out WP:BIRD, the wikiproject for all bird stuff. It's a touch quiet at the moment but we do a lot of work around the place. Sabine's Sunbird talk 06:37, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Double names in boxes

[edit]

Hi Kiwifiwi, I see you have been adding Maori names to species boxes for numerous bird pages. This goes counter the usual practice in species articles; the box is supposed to contain the one principally used name, which is generally identical to the article title, and no alternatives. Consider that most non-European species have multiple names (all of which may be in wide use), and we can't overload the boxes with them all. (In fact I do have some Nelson acquaintances who would not hesitate to subtitle kereru as "illegal Tegel", but I wouldn't accuse you of that :p) The Maori name is usually mentioned, and often explicated, in the text itself, and if it isn't you are welcome to add such a treatment. There should also be a redirect to the article from the Maori name as a search term, if you wish to look into that. Cheers --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 06:48, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Elmidae, Thank you for this information. You'll see that I'm very new to Wikipedia and appreciate this guidance. I'll go back and revert any species boxes where I've added in a Maori name and will link back any others that I've added into the main text. Kiwifiwi (talk) 06:55, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
