Activity-based proteomics

Regarding your article "Activity-based proteomics" I would like to point out that the shown structure of the rhodamine derivative is incorrect. It is the substitution pattern at the chromophore. Kind regards, Ruben Bartholomäus (ETH Zürich) 82.130.100.77 (talk) 18:45, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Thanks, but I haven't edited activity-based proteomics much beyond cleanup and most recently flagging it for being too technical and needing sections. The file File:Fp rhodamine.svg is by Ronhjones on WIkimedia Commons. --Kkmurray (talk) 18:55, 6 February 2015 (UTC)

Regarding the use of "van der Waals" or "Van der Waals" in text

It is indeed listed as "van der Waals" in "APPENDIX 9-1: recommended spelling list" of "The ACS Style Guide (2006)". However, their recommendation is wrong. The proper way to write Dutch surnames can be found on Wikipedia at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_name#Surnames. This is a matter of writing names correctly.

The same applies to "Van 't Hoff" or "van 't Hoff".

Furthermore, the ACS recommended spelling list is inconsistent: van der Waals VandenHeuvel van’t Hoff–Le Bel (use en dash, see p 124) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 83.83.182.84 (talk) 21:23, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

From van (Dutch): "Derivative terms like van der Waals radius (Dutch: vanderwaalsstraal) the "v" is not capitalised, unless it is the first word of the sentence." In any case, you need to take your proposed changes to the article talk pages or WikiProject Chemistry. --Kkmurray (talk) 23:31, 7 March 2015 (UTC)

Why spell out NMR?

Trying to figure out the motivation to move paramangetic NMR ... to Paramagnetic Nuclear Magnetic .... Might be something that others would want to have a say in?--Smokefoot (talk) 14:37, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

Motivations are WP:ACRONYMTITLE and naming consistency within Category:Nuclear magnetic resonance. The consensus seems to be spelling out NMR in article titles. If that consensus isn't clear or there is a desire for acronym-only or system of mixed acronym/spelled out titles, then there should be a discussion. --Kkmurray (talk) 15:06, 22 March 2015 (UTC)
Well darn, the time to have that discussion was a few days before the action. Kind of a team sport here in the chem project, or was. When was the last time you discussed a nuclear magnetic resonance spectrum? --Smokefoot (talk) 17:43, 22 March 2015 (UTC)

I see you have deleted multiple posts from March that I had posted from nanoHUB.org. I do not have any of the original messages sent, but some pages we posted to would be semiconductor, quantum mechanics, etc. What should we do differently to keep posts up?

Thanks,

I only see one contribution from User:Toristevoo1223, but presumably you mean the many links to nanohub.org that are being added to article external links sections. You should be aware that Wikipedia is not a mirror or a repository of links, images, or media files (WP:NOTREPOSITORY). See Wikipedia:External links: external links to a site that does not provide a unique resource are not appropriate. The content should be added to expand the article. --Kkmurray (talk) 19:07, 20 April 2015 (UTC)

Hello!

I am new to wiki-editing, so I wondered if perhaps I stepped on a rule or something. In my recent additions to the page "Physics Education", under the "Major areas of research" I included some external links within the paragraph text to different curriculum web-pages.

I see that they have been tagged as "dead links" and removed. Was this because it was inappropriate to have external links in the paragraph text? Should they have been references instead?

They certainly were live, I tested them and they led to the right pages...

Thanks!

The guidelines are at WP:NOTLINK and WP:EL. Concepts should be integrated into the body of the article; unique resources that can't be integrated are potential external links. A good rule from WP:ELNO is that "one should generally avoid providing external links to any site that does not provide a unique resource beyond what the article would contain if it became a featured article." --Kkmurray (talk) 01:09, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

Change in your user rights

Your Wikipedia account was previously granted a user right called "course instructor" by the Wiki Education Foundation. That right enabled you to create a course page through the EducationProgram MediaWiki extension. Starting in fall 2015, the Wiki Education Foundation has discontinued its use of this extension. Going forward, users should create course pages through the Wiki Education Foundation website. That application is more user-friendly, and any content is automatically mirrored to Wikipedia. To prevent confusion, we'll be removing your "course instructor" user right, as it is not needed with the new system. This is simply a notification of the technical change to your account. No action is needed from you at this time.

If you plan on teaching with Wikipedia for the fall 2015 term, please email me (helaine@wikiedu.org) for instructions how to create your next course page using our new system. --Helaine (Wiki Ed) (talk), sent by MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 02:34, 21 July 2015 (UTC)

Chemistry handout

Hi. Wiki Ed is preparing to print a handbook to help student editors working with chemistry articles in higher education across the USA and Canada. You can find the draft text here. I'd really appreciate input from other editors on the Talk page. We've already reached out to WikiProject Chemistry, but I would be interested in your feedback, as an experienced instructor. Any feedback is especially helpful prior to Nov. 13 (this Friday). Thanks! Ian (Wiki Ed) (talk) 01:11, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Department of the Gulf

Thanks for adding the additional references to the page. I'm working on Winfield Scott Edgerly. When I looked for the department (ones of his last commands), I found it was a redirect to Army of the Gulf. I didn't realize that your internal text used the word "Department," so I turned the redirect into an article. I hope I haven't confused anything you had on your to-do list. I don't know right now if the department on "my" page traces its lineage to the department on "your" page. The Army probably doesn't know either. More research to follow. Regards, Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 03:45, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Are they the same Departments or should there be a DAB page? --Kkmurray (talk) 14:31, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
I think they're the same and we should probably treat them like the Department of Texas. Maybe a merge, which I don't know how to do?--Jim in Georgia Contribs Talk 14:38, 17 November 2015 (UTC)
If it is the same entity, it can be one article. A DAB is probably needed in any case since there was a Confederate Department of the Gulf (see Dabney_H._Maury#Civil_War) Here is Dyar on the Union Department: Dyer's Compendium (Union) Western Departments and Armies. --Kkmurray (talk) 15:35, 17 November 2015 (UTC)

Mass spectrometry template

Dear K K Murray,

In the template {{mass spectrometry}}, you removed the item "NEMS" which I added recently. You said in the comment "reverted good faith edit. That is a size of a mass spectrometer, not a type". Well, at least thank you for the "good faith".

I am afraid that this is a misunderstanding. NEMS-MS does not mean a microminiaturised mass spectrometer (as e.g. developed by the UK start-up Microsaic, see Miniature mass spectrometer). It refers to a new kind of analysis by detecting the frequency shift caused by the adsorption of the particles on a NEMS resonator. I invite you to consider the articles cited in the stub I created Nanoelectromechanical systems mass spectrometer (and to which the item "NEMS" on the template was linked).

It is not (yet?) a commercial instrument, but I think it deserves being mentioned in the Wiki encyclopedia. It is being developed by several research groups.

Would you consider undo your removal?

Thanks for your attention, Ileresolu (talk) 09:04, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

Yes, you are correct. I thought that you meant a MEMS based mass spectrometer. I didn't realize that nanoresonator mass measurement devices were being referred to as mass spectrometers, but it has made it to the secondary MS literature (e.g. doi:10.1002/mas.21495). This doesn't fit the IUPAC definition of mass spectrometer, but the question of where mass spectrometry stops and particle size and mass measurement begins seems to be an open one. --Kkmurray (talk) 13:55, 19 April 2016 (UTC)

Henry William Brown Template Use

I noticed you've used Template:Top_US_World_War_II_Aces for Henry William Brown, an article you created, despite the fact that the body of the article explicitly states that he was credited with 14 enemies destroyed in the air. The template should not be used in a way that makes aircraft destroyed on the ground inclusive, since the template specifies aerial victories. Cheers, Finktron (talk) 10:14, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Who is "Henry W. Brown (17.2)" in Template:Top US World War II Aces? Typo? --Kkmurray (talk) 12:22, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
This may well be a typo, since the sources in the article itself, Mustang Aces of the Eight Air Force and the website link to the American Air Museum, list Henry Brown with 14.2 confirmed. I'll remove him from the template. Cheers, Finktron (talk) 13:09, 13 June 2018 (UTC)

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages.
