User:Omo007 per WP:USERNOCAT

Hi there, this is an urgent massage a user by the name of User:Omo007 has added categories on to User:Omo007's userpage. I know I want to remove all of the categories but it won't let me. I need your help, could you the userpage titled User:Omo007 and remove all of the categories and talk to User:Omo007 to never create and article on it's user page per WP:USERNOCAT. This is an urgent message and reply me back as soon as you can. Thanks for your help. 2001:569:74EF:BD00:6CA5:BC2B:7750:77F6 (talk) 02:37, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

Polygon (Star Trek)

Hi,

I saw you added a redirect to ST:DSC from Polygon (Star Trek) and adding it to Category:Star Trek: Discovery characters. Could you give me details about this character? I couldn't find anything about him/her/it? Thanks, DGtal (talk) 14:09, 28 November 2017 (UTC)

@DGtal: Good question. He was listed here. Finding info on Jimmy Chimarios joining the cast is difficult. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 16:42, 28 November 2017 (UTC)
The name was added by an annonymous IP and the character isn't in IMDb or Memory Alpha or even google. It is either an error (or worse) or a future character yet to be heard of. I recomment deleting the redirect. DGtal (talk) 07:12, 29 November 2017 (UTC)
@DGtal: Agreed. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 07:44, 29 November 2017 (UTC)

1824 vs. 1826 introduction of Imperial Units

I noticed your addition, which I think is great, however I'd like to debate the issue of which year should be referenced. The weights and measures law that created Imperial Units was passed in 1824, to go into effect in 1825, which was later pushed back to 1826. Shouldn't the introduction date be when it was first used in commerce, which was 1826? I've not used the introduction template before, so am unaware of what rules are used in cases like this. Can you provide some insight as to what those conventions are, and why you think 1824 is the better date to reference? I think this is an important semantic issue, and want to learn more. PetesGuide (talk) (K6WEB) 05:47, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

@PetesGuide: That's a good question. I think of something being "introduced" just when it's public in some way--published in a book, passed as a law, etc. Maybe if something were in a private journal in (e.g.) 1822 but weren't published until 1836, it was introduced in 1836. That's my take at least. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 05:55, 30 November 2017 (UTC)

Good morning from Coreca

Good morning from Coreca, I am writing to greet you and know how you are. I'm good enough for now, I'm writing to ask you a courtesy if you like, that is to give a rereading page and maybe refresh the page. In Spanish it is perfect and for the links there is so much stuff in German, Naurally if I can do something for you ask as well. Ah, before you forget! I found another link for Sabrina Ferilli and her Marriage with Cattaneo. there he is!. Would you please insert it and remove that horrendous template above the page? thanks again and see you soon!--Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino (talk) 04:27, 4 December 2017 (UTC)

Peanut as nuts

Hi Koavf,

Regarding this revert. I appreciate your distinction between nuts and legumes and agree that a peanut should not be categorised, or otherwise encyclopaedically defined, as a nut. However, the broader purpose of hatnotes is to help readers locate the articles they are seeking. It is not an appropriate place for technicalities. As such, I'd like you to self-revert and restore my improved version of the hatnote on the Peanuts article.

The Peanut article already raises the distinction in its third paragraph, and future readers of the Peanut article too shall learn about it. This paragraph brings me to my point, which is, that it is linguistically appropriate to refer to peanuts as nuts (in common English language usage, and in culinary contexts, peanuts are usually referred to as nuts"). The Wiktionary usage example that helps define "nut" as a word even uses "peanut" (wiktionary:nut).

Before my unfortunate encounter with the Peanuts article about the comic, I myself had not heard of the word "legume". This, despite having learned English at an early age, and having spoken it on a daily basis for almost ten years. As such, I believe it would be likely for users to find the article easier, and quicker, by disambiguating peanut from a comic book as "the nut", not as "the legume". --Krinkle (talk) 00:45, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

@Krinkle: Thank you for your note. Was the hatnote unclear when you encountered it? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 02:39, 9 December 2017 (UTC)

BCE editnotice template

Hello Koavf. I looked for a template similar to {{use dmy}} for eras but couldn't find it. I then noticed that an editnotice existed for Abraham (using Template:Editnotices/Page/Abraham). I tried to create a similar Template:Editnotices/Page/Tetragrammaton but then realized that the template editor right is necessary. Since you created the Abraham one, I wondered if you'd like to also create this one, if you also consider that it is warranted. Lately someone invoked MOS:ERA in an edit summary while converting dates to BC/AD, but the article already used BCE/CE consistently except for one instance of AD and one instance of BC, which I fixed after reverting their change. Hopefully that an editnotice would reduce the likelyhood of future inconsistent additions. Thank you, —PaleoNeonate – 05:22, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

@PaleoNeonate: No problem: Template:Editnotices/Page/Tetragrammaton. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 05:25, 11 December 2017 (UTC)
Many thanks, —PaleoNeonate – 05:26, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

Alphabetization

So the rule for alphabetizing parameters in the album reviews template is to go by someone's last name (e.g. Christgau) rather than their first name (e.g. Robert)? I assume so, given your recent revert of my edit to 3rd (The Baseball Project album). Everymorning (talk) 22:56, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

@Everymorning: Well, yes--this is just an individual and the others are publications. Note also that I was wrong about some of those publications and I fixed it on that page too. Thanks a lot for doing that. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 23:05, 11 December 2017 (UTC)

New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Koavf, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 12713 pages. Please consider reviewing even just a few pages each day! If everyone helps out, it will really put a dent in the backlog.
  • Currently the backlog stretches back to March and some pages in the backlog have passed the 90 day Google index point. Please consider reviewing some of them!

Outreach and Invitations:

  • If you know other editors with a good understanding of Wikipedia policy, invite them to join NPP by dropping the invitation template on their talk page with: {{subst:NPR invite}}. Adding more qualified reviewers will help with keeping the backlog manageable.

New Year New Page Review Drive

  • A backlog drive is planned for the start of the year, beginning on January 1st and running until the end of the month. Unique prizes will be given in tiers for both the total number of reviews made, as well as the longest 'streak' maintained.
  • Note: quality reviewing is extremely important, please do not sacrifice quality for quantity.

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL has resulted in a significant increase in the quality of new submissions, with noticeably fewer CSD, PROD, and BLPPROD candidates in the new page feed. However, the majority of the backlog still dates back to before ACTRIAL started, so consider reviewing articles from the middle or back of the backlog.
  • The NPP Browser can help you quickly find articles with topics that you prefer to review from within the backlog.
  • To keep up with the latest conversation on New Pages Patrol or to ask questions, you can go to Wikipedia talk:New pages patrol/Reviewers and add it to your watchlist.

If you wish to opt-out of future mailings, go here. TonyBallioni (talk) 20:27, 12 December 2017 (UTC)

A tag has been placed on Category:1804 in the Louisiana Territory requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section C1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the category has been empty for seven days or more and is not a disambiguation category, a category redirect, a featured topics category, under discussion at Categories for discussion, or a project category that by its nature may become empty on occasion.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Again

Athletes who played sports in Indiana are not automatically from Indiana. Going to school or playing professional sports somewhere does not automatically make a person from that place. That is a longtime consensus here and if you bothered to check, other states don't categorize sportspeople in such a way. I have reverted this in the past[4] and am doing so again. If this continues, maybe ANI is my only course of action left....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 21:12, 15 December 2017 (UTC)

@WilliamJE: If you don't tell me what this is in reference to then I can't help you. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:28, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
My first sentence says 'Athletes who played sports in Indiana are not automatically from Indiana.' The link to my talk page above is pretty darn clear to what I'm talking as are the edits of yours I've undone which come up under your alerts. Notre Dame, Purdue, Ball State, South Bend Cubs, Indianapolis Colts, etc etc athletes or players aren't from Indiana....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 01:41, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
@WilliamJE: I solicited feedback from the relevant WikiProject on this but it just didn't get much traction. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:47, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
See also Category:Indy Eleven players. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:50, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
The one reply is pretty clear about the difference between sportspeople from and sportspeople in. 49 other states don't do it that way. City or town article notable people sections don't list someone as from Foo only because they went to college there. That's a consensus that I pointed out to you on my talk page. In some cases you incorrectly took categories categorized as 'Sportspeople in Indiana' and changed them to a from Indiana category. Playing or working somewhere doesn't make a person automatically from that place either....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 01:57, 16 December 2017 (UTC)
@WilliamJE: You linked to me something about colleges specifically. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 02:00, 16 December 2017 (UTC)

The article Post–Secondary Education Quality-Assessment Board has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence of notability (organizations and companies). Possible minor notability, but I'm in Ontario and never heard of this Board.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. New Years new page backlog drive

Hello Koavf, thank you for your efforts reviewing new pages!

Announcing the NPP New Year Backlog Drive!

We have done amazing work so far in December to reduce the New Pages Feed backlog by over 3000 articles! Now is the time to capitalise on our momentum and help eliminate the backlog!

The backlog drive will begin on January 1st and run until January 29th. Prize tiers and other info can be found HERE.

Awards will be given in tiers in two categories:

  • The total number of reviews completed for the month.
  • The minimum weekly total maintained for all four weeks of the backlog drive.

NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Taxonomic authorities

Hi, I reverted the edit you made on the page Ceratonereis but not because I believe that you were editing other than in good faith. It's a convention for lists in these types of articles, lists of subordinate taxa such as species in a genus or genera in a family to have the authorities in small text. There is currently a proposal to have this convention formally adopted as policy, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Organisms#Sources and authorities. I would ask you to bear that in mind when making these types of edits. Quetzal1964 (talk) 06:57, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Doesn't make any difference. You are the creator and are therefore strictly prohibited from taking off the tags. No exceptions. I will report you if you continue....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 12:08, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
@WilliamJE: As you can see at Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion, a page should not be tagged for speedy deletion if it has survived its most recent discussion (this generally applies to articles). If the discussion isn't even over then why would you tag it for speedy deletion? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 12:16, 8 January 2018 (UTC)
It says in bold that creators can't take tags off. You are being very selective in your reading....William, is the complaint department really on the roof? 12:31, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Deletion discussion

@WilliamJE:

This is a waste. See Wikipedia:Deletion policy: "Once there is an objection or a deletion discussion, a page may not be proposed for deletion again." There is a deletion discussion (which you know), therefore, the category. cannot be nominated for speedy deletion simultaneously. Please post to the actual CfD if you have feedback. If not, why do you think the CfD process can't run its course? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 12:25, 8 January 2018 (UTC)

Talk:American Utopia

The article you have created is currently start class. There are plenty more upcoming albums that don't have future in the class but assessments of their length and content. How we can't assess the class of an article when it's already start class is beyond me. I'm well aware "future" is an option and I don't have a problem with it existing, but American Utopia is a start class article as it is and thus should say that. Regardless, I have rated its importance low because it does not appear to be of significant cultural importance yet/if ever. There is no future option and there is nothing saying we can't have an assessment of that. Ss112 10:03, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

@Ss112: Upcoming articles have special considerations; that's why Future class exists. Since this is unreleased, it is assessed that way. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 10:31, 9 January 2018 (UTC)
Yes, but I'm saying not every upcoming album is assessed as "Future". I've seen users more experienced than I who generally know what they're doing create a talk page for an album they've created that is upcoming, and put an assessment that is not "Future" in the template but rather an assessment of its actual quality. Ss112 10:34, 9 January 2018 (UTC)

Three Billboards and Shape of Water

I suggest you try to ignore the edit warring IP at Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri and The Shape of Water (film). I blocked him for violating 3RR, but you're nearing the same. These aren't obscure articles, and disruptive edits are likely to be seen by others. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 07:46, 12 January 2018 (UTC)

Stop icon

Your recent editing history at The Shape of Water (film) shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See BRD for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in your being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly.
I'm tired of handing out warnings. More edit warring means a block. NinjaRobotPirate (talk) 08:31, 16 January 2018 (UTC)

NPR article

Hello, I removed the NPR article because, while generally true, the page in my view should remain as politically neutral and the article mentioned is the title of a single article describing the results of a single poll, not a summary of general public opinion conducted during the president's tenure. Please don't add it back. Thanks! -Benwitt, 19 Jan 2018

@Benwitt: Of course it should be neutral: every page here should be. How is your objection any different than the first, third, and fourth citations in the article, which are not meta-analyses of surveys but single news reports? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 01:56, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
@Koavf: My only objection is that Trump's widespread disapproval has been seen and tracked since day 1, and reiterated in the articles published. I think it's a little too early to say that a majority think his presidency has been a failure because it has not been tracked as frequently, and as a president, Trump is still fairly new. I think mine is a minor objection- if you want to repost it, please feel free. Thanks. Benwitt
@Benwitt: My claim is not that it's a failure (altho that is also true) but that it's perceived as one by Americans and having a poll indicating as such on his first anniversary is a tidy place to track it (in addition to all of the extensive daily/weekly/monthly polling data). ―Justin (koavf)TCM 02:58, 19 January 2018 (UTC)
@Koavf: I think it couldn't hurt to wait, but if you would like, please feel free to add it back. I'm not going to be up much longer for much of the night, so I won't be adding much to this page. I also agree w your previous point. You can use pollingreport.com/trump_ad.htm as a resource if it helps.Thanks - Benwitt
@Benwitt: Thank you. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 03:22, 19 January 2018 (UTC)

Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors

Hi Justin! I came across two categories, Category:Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors for Spring 2012 and Category:Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors for Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis, of which you are the only member. New Page Reviewer Newsletter

Hello Koavf, thank you for your efforts in reviewing new pages!
The NPP backlog at the end of the drive with the number of unreviewed articles by creation date. Red is older than 90 days, orange is between 90 and 30 days old, and green is younger than 30 days.

Backlog update:

  • The new page backlog is currently at 3819 unreviewed articles, with a further 6660 unreviewed redirects.
  • We are very close to eliminating the backlog completely; please help by reviewing a few extra articles each day!

New Year Backlog Drive results:

  • We made massive progress during the recent four weeks of the NPP Backlog Drive, during which the backlog reduced by nearly six thousand articles and the length of the backlog by almost 3 months!

General project update:

  • ACTRIAL will end it's initial phase on the 14th of March. Our goal is to reduce the backlog significantly below the 90 day index point by the 14th of March. Please consider helping with this goal by reviewing a few additional pages a day.
  • Reviewing redirects is an important and necessary part of New Page Patrol. Please read the guideline on appropriate redirects for advice on reviewing redirects. Inappropriate redirects can be re-targeted or nominated for deletion at RfD.

“Category:Basketball coaches from State Foo”

Hi - I noticed that you added a number of schools and/or professional team coach categories to this (example, adding “Basketball coaches from Indiana” to “Indiana Hoosiers men’s basketball coaches”). People who coached at schools or pro teams in these states are not valid subcategories of these categories. You have a mix of long-time coaches and people who move through on their way to another job in another state, so you just can’t assume they will be “from” that state. For example, Vanderbilt’s current head coach is Bryce Drew, who is from Indiana. Just wanted to let you know why I removed these. Thanks. Rikster2 (talk) 18:00, 17 February 2018 (UTC)

@L293D: I have been for awhile and contributed a lot but being an admin requires some other skills such as patience, trust from the community, understanding of policy, discretion, etc. Simply editing a lot or for a long time doesn't ensure those things. Dashes rather than hyphens in citation titles

Hi Koavf. As far as I can recall, you change hyphens to en dashes in article text and citations (I think I've even see you run a script that changes hyphens to en dashes). An editor, Life of Tau, disagrees that hyphens should be changed to en dashes, and has made a bit of a deal about it at God's Plan (song) when I changed them to en dashes. I know it's not a requirement, but I also don't believe it's a requirement we replicate exactly what a source's title is in the citation title parameter. If you know some bit of a better reason/standard for why en dashes are changed to hyphens (other than MOS:ENDASH), can you please drop a line at User talk:Life of Tau? It'd be much appreciated. Thanks. Ss112 07:28, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Thanks for sorting part of the problem out by removing the YouTube citations—however, there are still other sources on the page that use en dashes over hyphens in the title, and I believe this is part of what Life of Tau had an issue with. Ss112 07:35, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
@Ss112: I posted to his talk. I'm definitely not perfect, so maybe there is something that I'm missing here but yes, I do believe that we should use our in-house style even for external titles. I don't see the incentive to not. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 07:36, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
Is there a specific page other than MOS:ENDASH that states we should use en dashes rather than hyphens? Is there any other page where this is stated? Life of Tau was saying that they believe ENDASH doesn't apply to citations but only article prose. Ss112 07:42, 21 February 2018 (UTC)
@Ss112: Other than WP:DASH, I don't believe so but it does certainly apply to title as well. I don't see why it wouldn't apply to citations--we're not obliged to accept anyone else's styling. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 07:56, 21 February 2018 (UTC)

Any thoughts on what's best to do at that article? We have an irritating IP edit-warring, but it hardly seems worth the bother of protecting the article. Ghmyrtle (talk) 22:47, 28 February 2018 (UTC)

Hello wikipedian. Based on your experience in editing, I wanted some help from you. I wanted to know if Wikileaks can be mentioned as a reference in articles or as a reliable source?  M A A Z   T A L K  09:03, 1 March 2018 (UTC)

@Ma'az: I don't see why not. A good rule of thumb for me is to see if reliable sources consider a source reliable--other news outlets certainly do (even tho many are critical of Wikileaks). Do you have a particular use in mind? ―Justin (koavf)TCM 09:06, 1 March 2018 (UTC)
So, you are saying that it can be mentioned. I agree with you. There is also a template available on how to mention wikileaks references https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:WikiLeaks_cable. This should imply that it can be used as reference. Thank you for your input. And I was just using it in an article Research and Analysis Wing activities in Pakistan, and thought I should inquire about it. Ellipses in quoted material

Hi Koavf, I assume you're quite well-versed in how we use quotes on Wikipedia and where to use ellipses for omission of quoted material and where we don't. A user by the name of GWFrog thinks here that ellipses are required at the start of quotes because that somehow to them means "omission of quoted text" (which I quoted to them as part of WP:MOSQUOTE), whereas there is no omission in that quote—we have just chosen to start quoting the material at a certain point. If you get the time, can you please explain to them that these ellipses are not required? Because I don't really see these ellipses used all over Wikipedia every time somebody chooses to start the quotation of a source at a certain point. Taking up part of a quote is not an omission, and I'm surprised that this user has been given copyediting awards without understanding this. Thank you! Ss112 19:00, 8 March 2018 (UTC)

Good evening, dear Justin. I am writing to greet you and know how you are. I am well enough for now, busy between Coreca and my agricultural campaign. I am writing to ask you a little favor that I hope you will not deny me. I saw this article here, which I'm going to report, is a young Nepalese rapper, very smart for what I could understand. Already some friends gave me good information about him and I translated it into Italian. What is the practice for it to be even formalized in English? you know, could you help me? Thank you for what you did, do and you will do for me. a greeting from Calabria--Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino (talk) 14:22, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

@Luigi Salvatore Vadacchino: Sorry, I don't think I can help at the moment. I would recommend seeing the Translation Tool. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 17:45, 13 March 2018 (UTC)

The standard for charts sections is to have the reference next to the chart name and not the peak, and generally the peak position column should not be that wide, so we break the value with a line break. Template:Album chart even generates the reference next to the chart and not the peak, because when more charts are added, if the reference is next to the number value, it will not sort correctly (and this would be an WP:ACCESS concern, would it not?). So 2 will appear before 20 instead of before 3. (Try it out for yourself with dummy entries.) I've added chart wikitables to pages you've created or extensively edited before and you didn't seem to have an issue with it then, so I'm confused as to why you do now. Ss112 09:20, 16 March 2018 (UTC)

@Ss112: Nice point about accessibility--I was not aware of that. In my mind, the fact you are citing is that it reached "2", not that it was on [X] chart, so that is the fact that needs to be cited. (e.g. When I say the population of Indianapolis is 880,985, I am citing the number, not that Indianapolis has a population.) Regarding the width of the table, there is no real prospect of it being too wide to render, so I don't see the necessity for the line break. Alternately, it could just say "Peak". ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Thanks. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 09:24, 16 March 2018 (UTC)
I don't agree with combining commercial performance and the chart section. MOS:ALBUM separates the two; I'm not sure if you've combined these sections on other David Byrne articles, but even still, they don't need all need to be uniform. Not saying all album articles need to be uniform either, but some conventions suit the greater project. I don't think a table in the middle of the page rather than towards the bottom (as track listing, charts, certifications and release history generally are) aids the reader. Also sure, the column could say "peak", however I don't see the need to stray from convention here. I've kept the prose of the commercial reception, and kept your reference style per WP:CITEVAR. Ss112 07:20, 19 March 2018 (UTC)
Sounds fair. Thanks again, Ss. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 07:37, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

Upcoming changes to wikitext parsing

Hello,

There will be some changes to the way wikitext is parsed during the next few weeks. It will affect all namespaces. You can see a list of pages that may display incorrectly at Special:LintErrors. Since most of the easy problems have already been solved at the English Wikipedia, I am specifically contacting tech-savvy editors such as yourself with this one-time message, in the hope that you will be able to investigate the remaining high-priority pages during the next month.

There are approximately 10,000 articles (and many more non-article pages) with high-priority errors. The most important ones are the articles with misnested tags and table problems. Some of these involve templates, such as infoboxes, or the way the template is used in the article. In some cases, the "error" is a minor, unimportant difference in the visual appearance. In other cases, the results are undesirable. You can see a before-and-after comparison of any article by adding ?action=parsermigration-edit to the end of a link, like this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arthur_Foss?action=parsermigration-edit (which shows a difference in how {{infobox ship}} is parsed).

If you are interested in helping with this project, please see Wikipedia:Linter. There are also some basic instructions (and links to even more information) at https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-ambassadors/2018-April/001836.html You can also leave a note at WT:Linter if you have questions.

Thank you for all the good things you do for the English Wikipedia. Whatamidoing (WMF) (talk) 21:18, 19 April 2018 (UTC)

Disambiguation link notification for May 3

An automated process has detected that when you recently edited African diaspora, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Great Migration (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver).

Hello, Koavf, and thank you for your recent clean-up of African diaspora. The first sentence of the article ("The African diaspora is made up of communities throughout the world that peoples descended peoples from Africa, predominantly to the Americas and among other areas around the globe.") seems to be a bit of a mess, though. Maybe it's missing a word or two? Or maybe you were interrupted in the middle of an edit and never finished it? It's a big improvement over what was there, but it seems a shame not to finish it. Thank you. — Malik Shabazz Talk/Stalk 02:24, 4 May 2018 (UTC)

NPR Newsletter No.11 25 May 2018

Hello Koavf, thank you for your work reviewing New Pages!

ACTRIAL:

  • WP:ACREQ has been implemented. The flow at the feed has dropped back to the levels during the trial. However, the backlog is on the rise again so please consider reviewing a few extra articles each day; a backlog approaching 5,000 is still far too high. An effort is also needed to ensure that older unsuitable older pages at the back of the queue do not get automatically indexed for Google.

Deletion tags

  • Do bear in mind that articles in the feed showing the trash can icon may have been tagged by inexperienced or non NPR rights holders. They require your further verification.

Backlog drive:

  • A backlog drive will take place from 10 through 20 June. Check out our talk page at WT:NPR for more details. NOTE: It is extremely important that we focus on quality reviewing. Despite our goal of reducing the backlog as much as possible, please do not rush while reviewing.

Editathons

  • There will be a large increase in the number of editathons in June. Please be gentle with new pages that obviously come from good faith participants, especially articles from developing economies and ones about female subjects. Consider using the 'move to draft' tool rather than bluntly tagging articles that may have potential but which cannot yet reside in mainspace.

Paid editing - new policy

  • Now that ACTRIAL is ACREQ, please be sure to look for tell-tale signs of undisclosed paid editing. Contact the creator if appropriate, and submit the issue to WP:COIN if necessary. There is a new global WMF policy that requires paid editors to connect to their adverts.

Subject-specific notability guidelines

  • The box at the right contains each of the subject-specific notability guidelines, please review any that are relevant BEFORE nominating an article for deletion.
  • Reviewers are requested to familiarise themselves with the new version of the notability guidelines for organisations and companies.

Not English

  • A common issue: Pages not in English or poor, unattributed machine translations should not reside in main space even if they are stubs. Please ensure you are familiar with WP:NPPNE. Check in Google for the language and content, tag as required, then move to draft if they do have potential.

News

  • Development is underway by the WMF on upgrades to the New Pages Feed, in particular ORES features that will help to identify COPYVIOs, and more granular options for selecting articles to review.
  • The next issue of The Signpost has been published. The newspaper is one of the best ways to stay up to date with news and new developments. between our newsletters.

Blank lines

Hi. I was trying to follow the guidance on blank lines of MOS:INDENTGAP in an edit in the Pedro Perebal AfD talk but it didn't work. Could you tell me what went wrong and how in the future I can add the blank lines to my wall of text following the guideline? Thinker78 (talk) 06:16, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

@Thinker78:
The middle colons need text in them to keep from running together. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 06:55, 28 May 2018 (UTC)
But, unless I'm wrong, that's how they are supposed to be used to render blank lines according to the example provided in MOS:INDENTGAP. Thinker78 (talk) 19:13, 28 May 2018 (UTC)

Editor seems to think t in "the" is a special exception to normal caps

Hi Koavf, I know I've asked you to help me explain several things to editors before, and it looks like there's another instance of this. The editor Wikisian seems to believe that the production company Off the Dock, which redirects to Lakeshore Entertainment, is some kind of special exception because its "literal name" and "literature" use a capital t for "the". I've explained it's not an exception to normal capitalisation rules, but they don't seem to get it. This editor has been around since 2011 but doesn't seem to get very simple things like this. We had a disagreement over overlinking several months back as well. They also are trying to use WP:NCCAPS to claim that "proper name" means we capitalise all first letters in a title. Obama caption

Why would you claim there was consensus on the Talk page of an article, when there most clearly was not? Dave Dial (talk) 13:30, 1 June 2018 (UTC)

@Dave Dial: I didn't say there was consensus. What I implied was that there was an argument offered on the talk page to support this, which there is. If we are doing a tally, Koavf, Brendon, and SoWhy are all in favor with AnimalParty and Dave Dial not in favor. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 17:15, 1 June 2018 (UTC)
Why are you lying? There is obviously 3 editors that opposed a caption, including Corky who reverted you the first time. And even if it were true, that is not consensus. Use the Talk page and don't edit war. You are the one that wants to make the change, you don't just keep adding it. Dave Dial (talk) 00:04, 2 June 2018 (UTC)

Alec Stevens

Dear Koavf,

I added a photo to the Alec Stevens (comics artist and illustrator) article this morning, only to find the entire second half of the article (and all external links) edited out of it. Do I need a wiki editor to put the relevant info back in, and with footnotes? Would you be willing to help? I can provide the necessary links, fact-checking, etc.

For example, this line was removed:

Since 1992, Alec Stevens has served as an instructor at The Kubert School. Many of his former students are now industry professionals.

The proper reference to prove this is: http://www.kubertschool.edu/faculty/Alec_Stevens.html Some of the notable professionals who were his students include Sergio Cariello, Brandon Vietti, Micah Gunnell, and Alex Maleev, to name but a few.

Much of the second portion of the deleted article had to do with the Christian books, graphic novels, tracts, and the like published under his Calvary Comics imprint over the past 18 years, as well as his musical work in secular venues as well as serving as guitarist at Times Square Church from 2010-16, not to mention evangelistic and Gospel music work in Nigeria, West Africa in 2002.

@Chrisart7: Hi, Chris. I can tell you're new here and looking for help—I'm glad you reached out to me. I agree that the article is better with this expanded content but it needs to have sources. So I can work with you in expanding it if you want to do that. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 21:06, 3 June 2018 (UTC)

Yes, I do! What is the best way to proceed? Should I paste the deleted text in here, then interject the appropriate links as sources/references? Yes, I'm quite new at this.

```` Chrisart7
Did it, but wasn't able to keep the original Wikipedia links to keywords in the article. I'm sure you can solve that problem faster than I'm typing this. ```` Chrisart7
P.S. If you go to my talk page you'll see links to correspond to the deleted sections for sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Chrisart7#Alec_Stevens
Let me know if you need anything else for footnoting. Thanks again! ```` Chrisart7 —Preceding undated comment added 21:56, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
@Chrisart7: Here's my recommendation: copy and paste the text that you want at User:Chrisart7/sandbox and then we can start from there. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 22:05, 3 June 2018 (UTC)
Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for calculation the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. RonBot (talk) 17:07, 10 June 2018 (UTC)
Non-free rationale for File:Zook.png
Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Zook.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.
If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described in section F6 of the criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 18:11, 13 June 2018 (UTC)
DYK for Action Comics 1000
On 14 June 2018, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Action Comics 1000, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that two weeks before its release, retailers had already reportedly bought more than half a million copies of Action Comics #1000? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Action Comics 1000. You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Action Comics 1000), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
