Article 2 (part.) of the Treaty establishing the European Community

The Community shall have as its task, by establishing a common market and an economic and monetary union and by implementing common policies or activities referred to in Articles 3 and 4, to promote throughout the Community a harmonious, balanced and sustainable development of economic activities, [..] equality between men and women, […] and economic and social cohesion and solidarity among Member States.

Roadmap for equality between women and men

The Roadmap outlines six priority areas for EU action on gender equality for the period 2006 2010: equal economic independence for women and men; reconciliation of private and professional life; equal representation in decision-making; eradication of all forms of gender based violence; elimination of gender stereotypes; promotion of gender equality in external and development policies.

Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women

On 18 December 1979, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly. It entered into force as an international treaty on 3 September 1981 after the twentieth country had ratified it. By the tenth anniversary of the Convention in 1989, almost one hundred nations have agreed to be bound by its provisions.

The United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM) provides financial and technical assistance to innovative programmes and strategies that promote women’s human rights, political participation and economic security.
