Hi. Welcome to Wikipedia, and thanks for contributing to the improvement of the Mike Manning article! I thought I'd give you a few tips to make your editing go more smoothly:

  • First, sites with user-generated content, like imdb, tv.com, open wikis, etc. cannot be used as sources under Wikipedia:USERG. Neither is Starpulse, based on my inquiry at the Reliable Sources Noticeboard.
  • The Lead section of a biographical article should be limited to summarizing the things for which the subject is notable. The article already describes Manning as an LGBT rights activist, which is something he is notable for, as it was the activity he participated in on the TV show with which he became famous. But going beyond that by saying he is an activist for a variety of causes, while true, isn't appropriate for the Lead. There are many public figures who work for various causes, and we don't mention that in their articles.
  • Most importantly, make sure you do not add information to articles that is not supported by the accompanying sources. The source cited or Manning being awarded the 2011 Courage Award indicated that this was for his dedication to the youth development and mentoring program, but it did not specify "at risk or homeless children", nor anything in particular about the children he works with.

If you ever have any other questions about editing, or need help regarding the site's policies, just let me know by leaving a message for me in a new section at the bottom of my talk page. Thanks. :-) Nightscream (talk) 06:56, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. Thanks for adding more material to the Mike Manning article. For future reference, here are a few other points regarding Wikipedia's content guidelines:
  • Mike Manning first gained notability as a reality TV personality. In addition, given the millions of people who saw him over the course of those 14 episodes of The Real World, and before his acting work (which range from small, independent films to TV guest spots), he is arguably known more for the former than the latter (at least for now). For this reason, his time in reality TV should be mentioned first. We do not order the Lead section based on what the subject's main occupation is (at least not in and of itself), and removing mention of his reality TV work by removing the word "reality" from the phrase "reality TV personality" is inappropriate. While User:Kendra5 has informed me that Mr. Manning desires his Wikipedia article to de-emphasize his reality TV work, Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and not a platform for article subjects to promote themselves. While Wikipedia will certainly address concerns by an article subject regarding things like defamatory content, vandalism, information that raises privacy issues, etc., it does not allow them to control the content of their articles.
  • Because Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, it needs to be written in a formal tone. For this reason, subjects, in most instances, should be referred to by their surname, and not their given name. Similarly, passages like "[Manning] has a passion for skiing, wake-boarding, surfing, and anything outdoors." Are better described with wording such as this: "Manning enjoys outdoor activities, including...". "Anything outdoors" is not very formal. Similarly, the passage regarding his appearance in Crash & Bernstein is a bit clunky as written, and didn't mention the name of the episode, even though that information was available. Take a look at how I rewrote it to get an idea of what I'm talking about.
  • Speaking of that passage, it appears to be taken verbatim from his official bio. Make sure you paraphrase material you find in sources. Copying them verbatim is copyright infringement, which can get Wikipedia into legal trouble, and is a blockable offense. For now, don't worry about it, as I broke up the passage and paraphrased it for you.
  • A more minor point, but the names of long-form creative works, such as books, TV series, movies, etc. are italicized. The names of shorter portions of those works, such as chapters, episodes, stories, etc., are quoted.
  • I know that writing citations may seem a bit tricky or labyrinthine, but WP:Citation templates may prove useful in both providing the different types of citation templates, and explaining which information goes in each value. Here are some pointers pertinent to the citations in your edits:
    • The author and publication date of a source should always be provided in the citation. While sometimes these are not present, these were both present in the Zap2it story you cited, yet you left them out. While you did include the access date, this is only necessary when the publication date is absent. The publication date, when available, is more important than the access date.
    • A "publisher" is not the author of a source, it's the name of the publication (newspaper, magazine, website, book publisher). The author's name goes in the author field, not the publisher field. Also, who's Josh Rachford? The blurb under the bottom banner of the mikemanning.com webpage you cited just says, "Site design by Rachford Web Design". It does not indicate what Rachford's given name is, much less that he authored that biography. Similarly, the title of the source is the name or title of the individual piece--that is, the story or individual webpage, which can be usually gleaned from the heading at the top of the story or at the top of the browser viewing it (though sometimes these two are not the same). This should not be confused with the name of the website, which as aforementioned, is the publisher.
    • Btw, the bio from Manning's official site was already cited twice in the article, so you don't have to write it out again.
    • There are a number of different ways to write dates that are considered acceptable on Wikipedia, but forward slashes are not used to do so, as indicated by WP:DATESNO. Also, whatever method is used, it should be consistent across all the citations in an article.
    • The ref name tag should only be used if a given source is being cited more than once in the article. It is not necessary if a source is only being cited once, in which case the opening ref tag should simply be <ref>.
    • As indicated by WP:PAIC, spaces do not go in front of citations.

Hi. Please do not add unsourced material to articles, as you did with this edit to Mike Manning (actor), as this violates Wikipedia's Verifiability policy. Wikipedia requires that the material in its articles be accompanied by reliable, verifiable (usually secondary) sources explicitly cited in the text in the form of an inline citation, which you can learn to make here. If you ever have any other questions about editing, or need help regarding the site's policies, just let me know by leaving a message for me in a new section at the bottom of my talk page. Thanks. :-) Nightscream (talk) 22:12, 8 February 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I have reverted your content removal from the article, which was accompanied by the edit summary "Took out a fact about dating that is irrelevant to the page." While in retrospect, I agree that the specific men he dated, while arguably appropriate for the Real World DC article, and probably appears more sensationalistic in Manning's biographical article, removing the entire passage is not appropriate, because it is not irrelevant. The content of "slice of life" reality TV shows like The Real World, usually centers on, among other things, the personal issues that affect the cast members' lives, and this includes things like religion, politics, sexual identity, etc. Mentioning the salient conflicts that were depicted in Manning's storylines, therefore, is perfectly appropriate, in particular his conflict between his sexuality and his religion, how being in DC allowed him to openly date men when he could not do so back home, etc. I compromised by leaving out the details about the different men he dated, but I left in the content about his personal conflicts. Thanks. Nightscream (talk) 04:18, 16 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again. In regard to your question about italics, you can italicize text by placing two apostrophes on either side of it, like this. Similarly, you can boldface it by putting three on either side, like this. For more information on text formatting, see Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Text formatting. And if you ever have a question you can't find an answer for, feel free to leave a message for me at the bottom of my talk page. Hope that helps. Happy Holidays! Please cease your non-constructive edits. In your most recent edits to Mike Manning:
  • You removed mention of Manning's work as a reality TV personality and activist from the Lead. Manning's appearances as a reality TV personality are both the first and the primary way in which he is known. We are not removing that from the opening sentence simply because you and he do not like it. Wikipedia is not Manning's personal résumé.
  • You again unsourced material to the article, specifically mention of him producing 22 episodes of Youthful Daze, when the source you cited makes no mention of this, as it merely mentions that he will guest star in an upcoming episode.
  • You also referred to the subject as "Mike". Article subjects are not referred to by their given name. They are referred to by their surname. Please see WP:SURNAME. Nightscream (talk) 08:33, February 23, 2014
This is the last warning you will receive for your disruptive edits. The next time you violate Wikipedia's policies on [[WP:|verifiability]], original research, or source citation, with the aim of treating the Mike Manning (actor) article as his personal résumé, as you did yet again with this recent edit to that article, I will contact an adminsitrator to have you blocked from edting. Please do not make that necessary. Thank you. Nightscream (talk) 15:53, 14 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]
