A tag has been placed on Draft:Lawn Buddy, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Please read the guidelines on spam and Wikipedia:FAQ/Organizations for more information.

Hello! Thank you for the quick review of my article. I've definitely made some mistakes and am trying to figure out how to proceed. Thanks for helping a newbie be better at this.
1) Would you be able to retrieve our deleted article for our reference? It would help us rewrite the article, if needed.
2) I was unaware that using my company's name as the username would be problematic. Believe it or not, it's recommended rather prolifically out there that you should use your company name. Very sorry about that. I feel like this didn't help. I've added a request to the bottom of this page asking for me to both be unblocked and for a username change.
3) After looking through Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, it looks like I, as a company representative, am allowed to write an article for my company, as long as proper conflict of interest is disclosed (which I think I did). Is this correct? We have had a a good number of reputable publications write articles about the company. Some of these are national publications and others are regional/local. I guess I'm confused on why we failed the 'notability' criteria. Were the publications cited not deemed credible? Every fact presented had a citation and only facts were provided in what I thought was an objective tone. Was the issue how the facts summarized from these articles were presented, that there weren't enough facts, or something else? Clearly, I'm biased here, but I don't see how the article was so quickly deleted with the way it was written and with everything (I think) properly cited. Any guidance you could provide would be helpful.
Thank you for your time,
Phil Matthew Lawnbuddy (talk) 18:36, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hi,
  1. I can't restore your deleted draft, as I'm not an administrator. You need to contact the administrator who deleted it (and you can see who this was, by clicking on the Draft:Lawn Buddy redlink.
  2. I don't know which sources are recommending using the company name as your username, but this is wrong on two counts: it is considered promotional, and it also implies shared use (whereas Wikipedia user accounts are strictly for the use of one person only).
  3. You are right, it is allowed to edit an article about your business, but you must disclose your conflict of interest (COI) and the fact that you are paid. (I will post a message on the bottom of this page with information on how to do this.) You are also not allowed to publish an article directly, but must go through the AfC review process (as indeed you did).
Hope this helps, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 18:57, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Your account has been indefinitely blocked from editing because of the following problems: the account has been used for advertising or promotion, which is contrary to the purpose of Wikipedia, and your username indicates that the account represents a business, organisation, group, or web site, which is against the username policy.

You may request a change of username and unblock if you intend to make useful contributions instead of promoting your business or organization. To do this, first search Special:CentralAuth for available usernames that comply with the username policy. Once you have found an acceptable username, post the text {{unblock-spamun|Your proposed new username|Your reason here}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your proposed new username" with your new username and replace the text "Your reason here" with your reasons to be unblocked. In your reasons, you must:

  • Disclose any compensation you may receive for your contributions in accordance with the paid-contribution disclosure requirement.
  • Convince us that you understand the reason for your block and that you will not repeat the kind of edits for which you were blocked.
  • Describe in general terms the contributions that you intend to make if you are unblocked.
Appeals: If, after reviewing the guide to appealing blocks, you believe this block was made in error, you may appeal it by adding the text {{unblock|reason=Your reason here ~~~~}} at the bottom of your talk page. Replace the text "Your reason here" with the reasons you believe the block was an error, and publish the page.
This user's request to be unblocked to request a change in username has been reviewed by an administrator, who declined the request. Other administrators may also review this block, but should not override the decision without a good reason (see the blocking policy). Do not remove this unblock review while you are blocked.

Requested username:

Request reason:

I was unaware I couldn't use our company's name as a username when creating the account. While trying to understand if it was allowed to write an objective Wikipedia article as a representative of the company, many sources of guidance recommended using the company name as the username. Had I know, I would have used my own name. I had the strong, but false, belief that using our company name was a requirement as part of disclosing a conflict of interest. Please reconsider this block and allow me to continue to use the site under a different username that is my own name. Thank you for your time and consideration.

Decline reason:

Closing as unresponsive; you may make a new request when you are able to engage with us, should you still want to be unblocked. 331dot (talk) 16:58, 11 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I'd be curious as to where you obtained your incorrect advice- but regarding this matter, we usually discourage people from using their real names as a username, but you may if you wish. In looking at your edits, I think that you have a common misunderstanding as to what Wikipedia is. Wikipedia is not a place for businesses to tell the world about themselves and their activities, or what they consider to be their own history. A Wikipedia article about a business must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the business, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable business. Press releases, interviews, brief mentions, announcements of routine business activities, or niche industry awards(unless the award itself merits an article, like Academy Award) do not establish notability. What edits do you intend to make? 331dot (talk) 18:47, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your reply. Good advice on using my real name. I've added a different username for going forward.
To be honest, I don't know where I had seen the recommendation for a company name as a username. It was several months ago and it's possible/likely I misread things. I do remember questioning myself though. If I come across the reference(s) I'll be sure to share them.
I had thought I had done a reasonably good job of summarizing 6-8 dedicated news articles about the company without injecting any commentary or bias. I must have missed the mark. I have additional citations that I can use in the article, some of which are from additional sources, but I'm hesitant to resubmit my request because I feel like I was summarizing the cited references properly and was under the assumption that those citations, at least in a significant part, would aid in establishing our status as "noteworthy". I could probably add a few more citations from additional publications, but other than that am a bit stumped at how to move forward.
Is the issue that the cited references aren't credible or that the volume of the references is too small? Something else? Would providing a section summarizing our product offering based on citations be better or worse? I almost included this, but thought it would make it read more like a promotional website.
Thanks again for your reply and sharing guidance. Very much appreciated! Lawnbuddy (talk) 19:48, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As an admin I can view deleted pages. I can say that your references were exclusively announcements of routine business activities like the raising of funds, or interviews with the founder of the company. These do not establish notability.
You've done a great job of summarizing the activities of your company- the trouble is, that's not what we are looking for in terms of establishing notability. Please read WP:ORG carefully. An article must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the company. Broken down, this means
  1. independent- wholly unconnected with the company and not based on materials from the company(like interviews and press releases)
  2. significant coverage- more than just documenting the activities of the company, especially if routine(like the raising of funds, commencement of operations, or opening of locations) the source goes into detail about the significance or influence of the company.
None of the sources you offered met this criteria. Please understand that not every company merits a Wikipedia article, even within the same field.
The gist of what I'm getting at is, we won't unblock you to edit about your company in the near term; we want you to demonstrate your understanding of Wikipedia content guidelines by first editing in other areas completely unrelated to your conflict of interest as a general contributor before permitting you to submit a draft about your company again. If your only interest is in writing about your company, you will not be unblocked and you should withdraw your request. What would you like to do? 331dot (talk) 20:09, 7 December 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Requested username:

Request reason:

I totally understand the above reasoning. I would like to use this account for personal use and not for promotion of my business or others. I don't receive any compensation from anyone for any future contributions. I understand that I was blocked because of trying to create a page for my business, which would, hopefully, help us with SEO, a benefit larger businesses receive. I will not be attempting to create pages to any business or organization I am affiliated with unless it follows community guideline. I was going to propose an edit to the completion date and height of an upcoming tallest building in the state of Vermont on the article with title "List_of_tallest_buildings_by_U.S._state_and_territory" in the "Tallest buildings proposed or under construction" section.

Decline reason:

Procedural decline only. This unblock request has been open for more than two weeks but has not proven sufficient for any reviewing administrator to take action, or you have not responded to questions raised during that time. You are welcome to request a new block review if you substantially reword your request. To be unblocked, you must convince the reviewing administrator(s) that
  • the block is not necessary to prevent damage or disruption to Wikipedia, or
  • the block is no longer necessary because you
    1. understand what you have been blocked for,
    2. will not continue to cause damage or disruption, and
    3. will make useful contributions instead.
