Administrators' newsletter – March 2019

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2019).

Guideline and policy news

Technical news

  • A new tool is available to help determine if a given IP is an open proxy/VPN/webhost/compromised host.

Arbitration

  • The Arbitration Committee announced two new OTRS queues. Both are meant solely for cases involving private information; other cases will continue to be handled at the appropriate venues (e.g., WP:COIN or WP:SPI).
    • paid-en-wp@wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private evidence related to abusive paid editing.
    • checkuser-en-wp@wikipedia.org has been set up to receive private requests for CheckUser. For instance, requests for IP block exemption for anonymous proxy editing should now be sent to this address instead of the functionaries-en list.

Possible error with bot?

Hello! I'm looking at the dashboard for relisted AfDs and it seems the bot doesn't like the attempt I made to capitalize internet to Internet for the right AfD category - [[:Category:AfD debates (Web or Internet)|Web or Internet]]. – The Grid (talk) 21:15, 26 February 2019 (UTC)

(talk page watcher) @The Grid: Presumably you refer to this edit which was nullified one minute later. It is pointless amending a bot-built page, the bot will only overwrite it again with what it believes to be the correct content. The category was renamed three years ago; it would appear that the people who agreed on the move (see Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Log/2016 January 6#Category:AfD debates (Web or internet)) and who carried it out (Black Falcon) didn't consider that Legobot would need to be reconfigured. If Legoktm is unwilling to amend the bot, the category should be moved back to its previous name, and ancillary amendments performed. --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 21:53, 26 February 2019 (UTC)
@Redrose64: Thank you for the response and the history of the category. All I noticed was the different capitalization and how it didn't point directly to the respective AfD categories. – The Grid (talk) 13:04, 27 February 2019 (UTC)
Redrose64, thank you for pinging me. You are correct, we didn't consider the fact that Legobot uses this category.
Legoktm, would you kindly reconfigure Legobot to reflect the name change: Category:AfD debates (Web or internet)Category:AfD debates (Web or Internet)? Thanks, -- Black Falcon (talk) 20:04, 3 March 2019 (UTC)
Friendly ping. -- Black Falcon (talk) 20:02, 17 March 2019 (UTC)

Legoktm, just pinging to be sure that Legobot won't be affected by the Ubuntu shutdown and migration to Debian mentioned under "future changes", which in this case is only next week. Both DYKUpdateBot and WugBot have had to move, and there were some minor bumps, so if Legobot also is, I hope the move goes smoothly. Thanks. BlueMoonset (talk) 18:49, 21 March 2019 (UTC)
