Regarding your edit to Germantown[edit]

Hi, do you have any sources that Walter Leighton Clark lives or lived there? I did a brief search and found none. Best wishes! CharonX/talk 08:48, 30 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Source is his autobiography, "Leaves from an Artist's Memory." I have made a PDF copy and need to make accessable -- lots of information. Leightonwalter (talk) 00:26, 10 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Stockbridge Casino.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 08:53, 11 September 2009 (UTC). A tag has been placed on Mercury Cafe requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about an organization or company, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for organizations and companies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. ttonyb (talk) 04:44, 22 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[Previously Removed Image][edit]

I believe you had uploaded an image of Helen Holt Hawley with Walter Leighton Clark at a drawing for the Grand Central Art Galleries in 1933. But it looks as if that image has been removed. I'm working on a book and we at the New York Transit Museum would like to publish that image. Are there copyright concerns regarding that? What or who was the source of the image?Brett72Brett72 (talk) 21:55, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Reply from Leightonwalter: There are no issues. I made the mistake of uploading the image with the wrong public domain tag. I've since determined what the correct one is, and will re-upload. Apologies for the delay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.134.207.224 (talk) 22:08, 22 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

In that case, how would you feel about emailing a hi-res tif file to us? (OK if it comes with print dot distortion. I can fix it on my end.) My email address is Brett.Dion@nyct.com Also, can you include the dimensions of your printed image and how you would like to be credited, if at all. Brett72 (talk) 13:16, 23 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for April 23[edit]

Hi. When you recently edited Edmund Greacen, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages White Plains and Water lilies (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Note from LW: Thanks much. The "water lilies" link was correct; it went to the Monet paintings; I fixed the White Plains, New York reference, however, so we're all set.

James J Montague[edit]

I saw you were involved in editing the James J Montague article and wanted to know if you knew anything about the Memory Street book listed in the References section. I am interested in finding a print copy but can't find one in library catalogues or on Amazon. I'm not sure how to find out which user exactly contributed the citation. Thank you very much for any help you can provide. My email address is: peterpaulward@gmail.com

The page will shortly be deleted. If you plan on editing the page to address the issues raised when it was declined and resubmit it, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}} or {{db-g13}} code. Please note that Articles for Creation is not for indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace.

Thanks for your submission to Wikipedia, and happy editing. JMHamo (talk) 01:49, 28 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Leightonwalter here: Yes, please delete the Loren McIntyre page from the "articles for creation" section. That's a duplicate, as the article is already in the main Wikipedia space.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

Shorenstein Center[edit]

Lots of things to discuss.

  • Yes, there was a better way to change the name. There is a WP:MOVE function that would have done what you needed, but all that is handled now.
  • The center may be a non profit, but WP:NOTABILITY applies to all organizations, with WP:ORG applying to both corporations and non-profits. WP:NONPROFIT are the more narrowly tailored criteria.
    • The center may meet these criteria, but it needs to be shown using WP:RELIABLESOURCES. Having the entire article sourced by the center's WP:SELFPUBLISHED website leads to many issues.
      • WP:Neutral point of view issues (along with WP:COI since it appears you are closely affiliated with the center, or at least Harvard Kennedy School)
      • WP:COPYVIO - major sections of the article are copied directly from the center's website. In addition to the obvious neutrality failure that entails, its also grounds for immediate deletion as it causes legal problems for wikipedia.

As it stands this article is likely to be deleted again, quite soon for the copyright issues, but eventually anyway for the other issues. If you want the article to stick around, it needs to be rewritten to show WP:NOTABILITY (note that notability is not synonymous with importance. Many important things are not notable. Many notable things are not important.) The best way to do that is find WP:NPOV WP:RELIABLESOURCES unaffiliated with the center, to WP:VERIFY all information in the article. The article should not be written as a marketing or promotional brochure, but clinically describe the foundation (including balancing with any negative information that there may be).

Please let me know if you have further questions or need clarification. Gaijin42 (talk) 15:02, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I'm reworking the article now, as indicated. That said, I'm having a little trouble understanding why a Harvard University research center established in 1986 that has hosted hundreds of fellows -- journalists, politicians, and media figures -- and published a similar number of research papers is somehow not "noteable" enough for inclusion in Wikipedia. Many other Harvard Kennedy School centers are in Wikipedia, including, for example, the Ash Center for Democratic Governance and Innovation. For what it's worth, the Shorenstein Center site is Creative Commons, like Wikipedia. While I am rewriting and expanding what's there, there are no copyright issues with their text, period. But again, I'm doing a rewrite and expansion, and will prioritize neutral sources. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

  • Please sign your posts by adding 4 tildes to the end of your comments.
  • WP:NOTABILITY is WP:NOTINHERITED. As for the other centers, WP:OTHERSTUFFEXISTS and each center would be evaluated on their own merits. As I stated above, notability is not synonymous with importance. Notability is shown by "being noted". Have other people, not associated with the foundation, noticed the foundation and written about it? If so, its probably notable. If not, well, then its not.
  • There are in fact copyright issues. period. The CC license used by the center is "NoDerivatives" which explicitly prohibits redistribution of the material - clearly wikipedia would be distributing.
  • Even if that were not the case, it still leaves a neutrality problem. We don't let people's own PR write the encyclopedia articles about themselves. We are not a press release site or marketing brochure. We must present a neutral portrait of subjects, and relying primarily on the subject themselves for that description is a non-starter.
  • To the above points, find articles written in 3rd party sources (preferably newspapers, magazines, books, academic papers, tv segments, etc from sources completely unaffiliated with the foundation) about the center, and base the article on those. The centers own website, press releases etc are not acceptable to base an article on.

Thanks for the insight, much appreciated. Four tildes like this? Leightonwalter (talk) 15:34, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, like that :). Now we can work on indenting, which is done by adding colon characters to tab inward (instead of adding a long line like you were above) ;). Good luck in improving the article, and let me know if you have further questions. Gaijin42 (talk) 16:01, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks much. Does one progressively add more colon characters as the conversation continues? I have three in place here. I do have one question: I know how to reference a wikipedia article -- Al Franken, for example -- but how does one reference a section within an article? The URL I'm looking at is this one: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harvard_Institute_of_Politics#John_F._Kennedy_Jr._Forum. It's the IOP's page, and they run the Forum at HKS, apparently, and that's where the Shorenstein Center often holds events. Just want to reference "John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum," and have it go to that section specifically of the IOP Wikipedia page (assuming that's a good strategy). Thanks! Leightonwalter (talk) 16:24, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you keep adding colons to keep tabbing. If it gets too deep, you can outdent. (An example follows here)

You can make the link to a section like this Harvard_Institute_of_Politics#John_F._Kennedy_Jr._Forum but you could also change the text of the link, which may be more readable, by using the pipe character within the link such as John F Kennedy Jr. Forum (You can also make the link without the _ chars, using spaces instead, if you don't need to change the lettering) Gaijin42 (talk) 16:31, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent, thank you. So you know, right now I'm primarily doing a rewrite on the core text, emphasizing external links. Will probably take me several hours, as I'd like this to make the grade. :) Leightonwalter (talk) 16:47, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I'm glad you were able to save the article on Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics and Public Policy, Leightonwalter. Such a well-known institute, I'm surprised there were any questions on its importance. Liz Read! Talk! 20:47, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the note. It was more a matter of having sufficient external references, and I'm the process of putting everything in place now. The top is already upgraded, and I'll fill out the body over the next week. Fun! Leightonwalter (talk) 20:50, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

about us refs[edit]

This may be moot, if you plan on removing the links anyway, but the majority of the links pointing to centers website are all redirecting to the same minimal about us page eg

both go to http://shorensteincenter.org/about-us/ (it looks like the URL scheme was changed and now those links should be like http://shorensteincenter.org/about-us/history/building-the-center/)

So they aren't really usable as citations as is. It would be better to not rely much on the foundation's site, but if you do need to do so for some basic fact (year of founding etc) , it may be wise to use something like http://webcitation.org/ to create more stable links which would still be valid even if the foundation changes its website in the future. Gaijin42 (talk) 18:53, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the note. I'm eliminating those as I move down the article; I've knocked out the majority up top -- I spent the last however-many hours just doing four paragraphs (!) -- and will continue as I go down. That said, I am still referencing some Harvard.edu and HKS content simply to verify people's formal titles (something that doesn't always appear in external sites), to link to event landing pages, and so on. This is always augmented with external links, however. If you'd prefer that I never link to any Harvard sites, just let me know. Hope what I've done so far (just the top, at present) is up to snuff. Thanks! 128.103.18.91 (talk) 19:08, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Use of the foundation site for information like positions/titles/dates is acceptable. If its uncontroversial, one might even consider not citing those facts as WP:BLUE to avoid cluttering the references (or perhaps reusing the same reference for all such information) Wikipedia:Citing_sources#Repeated_citations Gaijin42 (talk) 19:13, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
WP:BLUE indeed. I'll do a reference de-clutter after the rewrite. I'm trying to group and smooth references as I go, and there will be a final pass to make sure all is optimal. Thanks as always for your help -- much appreciated. 128.103.18.91 (talk) 19:17, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm done working on the page for now. There's some more material coming on the center's initiatives as well as a highly selective list of prominent former fellows. Leightonwalter (talk) 21:40, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

This probably would have been helpful earlier, but this link may be useful for you in understanding how to do various wiki things like those answered above Help:Cheatsheet Gaijin42 (talk) 22:21, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Fantastic, thanks much. More to come tomorrow. Leightonwalter (talk) 22:23, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
