Movement Charter Drafting Committee's monthly newsletter

The Movement Charter Drafting Committee at the Wikimedia Summit in September.
  • Movement Charter Drafting Committee's participation at the Wikimedia Summit: The MCDC members presented initial drafts of the three chapters of the Movement Charter: Preamble, Values and Principles, and Roles and Responsibilities. The three chapters were prioritized to lay the groundwork for the rest of the Charter. MCDC members attended breakout rooms to discuss the progress with all attendees - both online and offline. The drafts received valuable feedback from the affiliates in many sessions. The Committee also launched a survey to gather feedback and suggestions on the Movement Charter development. Report for the Wikimedia Summit can be found here.
  • Learn about Movement Charter Drafting Committee’s work in September: The Committee released its regular monthly update from September 2022. It includes highlights about the Committee's progress in creating the Movement Charter content, results of the Wikimedia Summit, and an important announcement about membership.

Educational institutions - Wikipedia cooperation

Hi LiAnna, I had a for me interesting experience when I learned that an editor from the Boston College was not able to get his draft approved in an unlucky way, here and here (as to me, all involved acted in good faith) which lead to several discussions which in part are still going on. I am trying to find and support a mechanism with which the drafts and articles from editors from educational institutions can be labeled so interested reviewers can act in a collaborative way. Similar like the women in red. I was told that such a mechanism or a similar one already exists and would be glad to learn more about it.

I believe if the editor would have been prepared and welcomed better for/by the wikipedia community they'd have had a more pleasant start for their wikipedia experience. Now their draft has been declined twice, a merge discussion is going on and actually their article Miss Zhao's suicide is/was rather well elaborated from the beginning.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 06:17, 23 September 2022 (UTC)

Thanks for the question! We have an extensive program where thousands of students each term contribute content to Wikipedia; you can see the students in action this term here. Wiki Education provides a series of training resources that help guide the small numbers of students who create new articles each term into effectively doing so (here's our moving out of the sandbox training), but occasionally some students simply don't follow our guidance. In this case, it looks like the issue was compounded by the student putting quotes on the article title in our Dashboard software, which meant the automatic hidden category on the article and the note on its talk page never posted. (You can see how this works in action at Thraustochytrids, another new article created by students in our program that term.) It looks like this student didn't actually engage with our trainings and tried to do it without understanding what was happening, since they created it in both mainspace and draft space. (It's elaborate in main because the student also created it there -- the student's work is already in mainspace, so I think they'll be fine with an extra draft they accidentally started being declined.) Please feel free to ping User:Ian (Wiki Ed) if you see other work from our student editors who need some help -- we're happy to jump in on those! --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 16:33, 23 September 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the answer, I sincerely must admit it was a long answer and it took me some time to think over it. I am not so much worried about the editors thoughts about a declined draft. I am rather sure their tutor prepared them for what is to expect from the wikipedia process. But I worry about if an editor who created a fairly elaborated article (close to a GA) would recommend editing on Wikipedia. I have learned that there exists the hidden Category:Wikipedia Student Program. But there the articles can hardly be found. Has there been thought about creating the hidden AfC category about drafts/articles created by members of WikiEd. There exist many subcategories already and I'd support the creation of such a category. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 08:25, 29 September 2022 (UTC)
I learned there are other categories around the Wikipedia Eduction Program and will try to find a category over which articles created or edited by editors of the Wikipedia Students Program. While writing this I just realized the Student program is a different program than the Wikipedia Education Program. Its a rather large nucleus I wasn't aware of it for years and am interested in supporting it. Paradise Chronicle (talk) 02:26, 7 October 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! I'm pinging @Sage (Wiki Ed): to this conversation, as he runs our technology, including the Dashboard application that is adding those categories, so he might have a better sense of the categorization. --LiAnna (Wiki Ed) (talk) 15:59, 10 October 2022 (UTC)
Paradise Chronicle: Hi! It looks like you've found the existing categories that our system adds to the sandboxes of student editors. If there's anything related to that you want to inquire into further, please give me a ping.--Sage (Wiki Ed) (talk) 17:15, 12 October 2022 (UTC)
Hi @Sage (Wiki Ed), well this is great. What kind of category is this? I have checked this sandbox, but it didn't have any. If I knew, I might help to wikify (add wls from and to) the articles once they are released into main space.Paradise Chronicle (talk) 22:51, 28 October 2022 (UTC)
The only one we use is the hidden category you linked above, Category:Wikipedia Student Program. It gets added via the preload templates we use for several sandbox exercises as well as the sandbox draft pages where student editors start their main contributions, like here. It does not get added to the default `/sandbox` page because we discourage student editors from using that so that they don't end up trying to go through AfC (since submissions often won't get reviewed before the course ends). Although I guess it would make sense to add it to the template we use for those sandboxes, {{dashboard.wikiedu.org sandbox}}, for the not-infrequent times when student editors use that sandbox anyway.
