23 FG

Thanks for your response re annexes; the standard I work to is MOS:APPENDIX. Regarding removal of ext links, my intention with 23 FG was to remove all links that weren't about the group - all the fighter squadrons have their own pages, largely thanks to the work of Bwmoll3 et al., so the ext links should go there. Same for 2 ALS/AS. Ext links about the wing should go at the wing article, etc. Does that make my intention clear? Cheers Buckshot06 (talk) 20:12, 30 July 2012 (UTC)

Merger of Operations Group and Wing articles

Fair enough, as they are easy enough to restore. I spent a significant amount of time several years ago splitting the OG off into separate articles from the Wing articles. Over time I've thought a lot about this and much of the post Korean War history is redundant, especially after the the implementation of the Objective Organization plan in the early 1990s.

I've completed the Air National Guard and there are some ANG Wings which had World War II Groups, I didn't create a separate article for those OG; just merged them in with the Wing. Started to revise the AFRC units and this was a good opportunity to merge the Troop Carrier Groups, which, although they were combat units and thus notible, really aren't that significant. I'll go back and revise the three I've merged and initiate a discussion. Take care Bwmoll3 (talk) 23:02, 23 January 2013 (UTC)

Template:unit awards table

The legend of all added unit awards and their parameter is now located on the template page. Do you have any other ideas that would improve the template? — -dainomite   03:16, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

I'd add Distinguished Unit Citation to the Presidential Unit Citation description under the Army and Air Force awards. That was the award name in WW II and Korean War. I don't know if a note is needed about this, or if we can expect editors using the template to know what they are talking about.

The "French-Pattern" unit awards (Croix de Guerre and VN Cross of Gallantry) are always "with palm" when awarded to a unit. The awards can also be made to individuals with different devices on the medal. At least for the RVN GC, there is no differing device to indicate multiple awards for either the units (same way for US unit awards -- you get another streamer for the flag) or individuals (my squadron earned three while I was assigned, but my gong just has one palm on it). --Lineagegeek (talk) 20:41, 7 June 2013 (UTC)

471st Special Operations Wing

Now this is one consolidation I just do not understand at all. From what I'm reading it appears that AFHRA consolidated an inactive World War II training group with a Korean War special operations wing that was inactive since the 1950s and consolidated them in 1985 into a new designation and never activated it ? Yup, and did the same thing with all of the AC&R Wings in July '85:

580th with the 480th Antisubmarine Group as the 480th SOW (although that's been active as an intel unit)

582d with the 472d Bomb Group as the 472 SOW

At the group level the 580th and 581st were left as they were, the 582d was redesignated the 472d Combat Support Group

As an aside, the 583d was activated in July 1953, but that was revoked retroactively in August.

At the squadron level

580th Air Resupply Sq redesignated the 480th ARS in July 1985 but consolidated with the 480 TFS in September

581st Air Resupply Sq redesignated the 471st ARS

582d Air Resupply Sq redesignated the 472d Civil Engineering Sq!

The Airborne Materials Assembly Squadrons became the 480th and 471st Psychological Warfare Sqs and the 472d Supply Sq

Hi! I'm looking for the 5th volume of the Portuguese book "Os nossos almirantes". According to this link there are copies here and here.

I want to improve the featured article that I wrote about Joaquim José Inácio, Viscount of Inhaúma. If I'm not mistaken, volume 5 (published in 1932)[1] has a chapter about Inhaúma. You'll find it under the name "Joaquim José Ignacio" (notice the extra "g" in Ignacio) or "Visconde de Inhaúma". I believe it begins on page 67[2]. There is also a following chapter that begins on page 135 titled "Centenário do Almirante Visconde de Inhaúma" (Centenary of Admiral Viscount of Inhaúma). --Lecen (talk) 22:29, 8 October 2013 (UTC)

proper terminology

Hey LG, I was curious what the proper vernacular is for a unit being awarded an award with valor. I'm not sure if it's "Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with valor device" or "Air Force Outstanding Unit Award w/ "V" Device" or just "Air Force Outstanding Unit Award with valor" or "... w/ Combat V" etc. Here's two examples of what I mean: User:Dainomite/720th Special Tactics Group#Awards and 24th Special Tactics Squadron#Unit Awards. I believe that the Wiki article has it right and it is "with Combat V Device" although I think omitting the "Combat" is acceptable. Calling the device a "valor" device isn't accurate. The AFOUA was the (second after the Bronze Star?) award to have the V available and it was intended to designate that the award was earned for performance in combat conditions, not for a valorous act. (Presumably, that would merit a PUC). To illustrate, the periods for the PUC and the AFOUA w/V that were awarded to my unit overlapped. The PUC was awarded to the squadron for a fairly specific operation. The AFOUA w/V was awarded to the entire wing, including support organizations, for its superior performance of its mission in combat, which included some operations the wing supported. On the other hand, the RVN issued a Gallantry Cross with Palm for each.

This is different than the DFC for example. Since it was created in the 1920s, the DFC has been awarded for two different things, one involving extraordinary achievement and one involving heroism -- Which Distinguished Flying Cross (United States) does not distinguish. In the 1990s (IIRC) sometime, USAF (but not other services) authorized the V device retroactively to the establishment of the AF to distinguish between the ones awarded for heroism and the ones awarded for extraordinary achievement. (Awarding orders had always made the distinction). It is possible to earn either type of DFC in combat. (In Viet Nam it was common for aircrew members who had completed a combat tour without earning a DFC for heroism to be awarded one for extraordinary achievement.) I would have less objection to calling the V on a DFC a valor award (same for the Bronze Star, which can be awarded for "heroic" or "meritorious" achievement), although it still would not be entirely accurate. --Lineagegeek (talk) 15:48, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

Very very interesting! Thanks for the in-depth explanation. I never knew they gave DFCs for meritorious service; I assumed they were all for heroism. Although I guess I never wondered why some had the "V" device and some did not but it makes sense since I was aware that the BSM uses the "V" device in the same manner to distinguish heroism from meritorious service. This causes me to ask another question. What's the difference between an AFOUA w/ "V" device and an AFMUA since both say "combat support operations" as a reason for the award. I assume the AFOUA w/ "V" device for "combat" would go to specific units partaking in combat whereas say support units not involved in the actual combat itself would get the AFOUA w/ "V" for "combat support operations", is this right? —  dainomite   16:55, 21 October 2013 (UTC)

The multiplication of unit awards started about the time I retired, so anything I know about the AFMUA I got from Wiki or official USAF websites. The Organizational Excellence Award was just coming in and was intended for headquarters that were too high up the chain to get a "unit" awards. --Lineagegeek (talk) 15:49, 22 October 2013 (UTC)
