Check your AWB sttings

This edit] slapped {{Uncategorized stub}} on 47th General Assembly of Newfoundland and Labrador even though it already sported {{Canada-politics-stub}}, which put the article in Category:Canada politics stubs. -Rrius (talk) 04:49, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for letting me know. I believe that AWB only checks for categories that are not included through templates such as stub templates, as those usually are very generic. Logan Talk Contributions 04:50, 25 September 2011 (UTC)
Then maybe it is a feature not worth using. A huge chunk of articles around Wikipedia use one of hundreds of stub templates to put stubs into categories. -Rrius (talk) 04:53, 25 September 2011 (UTC)

Responding to RFCs

Remember that RFCs are part of Dispute Resolution and at times may take place in a heated environment. Please take a look at the relevant RFC page before responding and be sure that you are willing and able to enter that environment and contribute to making the discussion a calm and productive one focussed on the content issue at hand. See also Wikipedia:Requests for comment#Suggestions for responding.

Greetings! You have been randomly selected to receive an invitation to participate in the request for comment on Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion. Should you wish to respond to the invitation, your contribution to this discussion will be very much appreciated! However, please note that your input will carry no greater weight than anyone else's: remember that an RFC aims to reach a reasoned consensus position, and is not a vote. In support of that, your contribution should focus on thoughtful evaluation of the issues and available evidence, and provide further relevant evidence if possible.

Non-free rationale for File:Arista-networks-logo.jpg

Hi Logan, I saw your comment on my talk page regarding File:Arista-networks-logo.jpg – and I also saw you changed your mind. I updated the logo's page and used the same non-free rationale as that used for the logo of Cisco Systems. Thanks for bringing this up to my attention, I think we're better off now. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tsunanet (talkcontribs) 22:13, 16 October 2011 (UTC)

Office Hours

Hey Logan! Thanks so much for your participation in the Office Hours session; the full logs can be found here, just in case you missed something or want to see precisely who said what. Re your idea for having the feed in a drop-down menu on the talkpage; the devs love it :). It's a "Phase 2" item, which translates into normalspeak as "we'll start working on it in January".

To recap; the barebones plan (without community suggested changes) can be found at WP:AFT5 - if you have any ideas, comments or suggestions, check out the talkpage, which I will be following vociferously. If you don't want to jump in all the time, but do want to participate in topics that particularly interest you, we'll be running a bi-weekly newsletter you can sign up for here. Once again, thanks for the great idea, and your participation so far :). Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 21:46, 4 November 2011 (UTC)

WP:UWTEST update

Hi Logan,

We're currently busy designing some new tests, and we need your feedback/input!

  1. ImageTaggingBot - a bot that warns users who upload images but don't provide adequate source or license information (drafts here)
  2. CorenSearchBot - a bot that warns users who copy-paste text from external websites or other Wikipedia articles (drafts here)

We also have a proposal to test new "accepted," "declined," and "on-hold" templates at Articles for Creation (drafts here). The discussion isn't closed yet, so please weigh in if you're interested.

File source

Hi Logan, regarding File:04 CALDER2.jpg and File:06 BIGFOOT.jpg I have update the source information indicating that both files were given by the author. Thanks for pointing out the problem. Regards, Jeremyjoshua (talk) 10:03, 21 December 2011 (UTC)

That is insufficient, I am afraid. Please communicate the copyright owner's permission via the process set out at WP:IOWN. Note that permission must be for all purposes. Permission for use just on Wikipedia, or for non-commercial use only, is not sufficient. Hope this helps. – ukexpat (talk) 14:30, 21 December 2011 (UTC)
Ukexpat, I have contacted the author asking him to send an email with permission to use the files as indicated on the page you suggested. In the meantime the images have been tagged OTRS pending. Thanks Jeremyjoshua (talk) 15:31, 22 December 2011 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool - notes and office hours

Hey guys! Another month, another newsletter.

First off - the first bits of AFT5 are now deployed. As of early last week, the various different designs are deployed on 0.1 percent of articles, for a certain "bucket" of randomly-assigned readers. With the data flooding in from these, we were able to generate a big pool of comments for editors to categorise as "useful" or "not useful". This information will be used to work out which form is the "best" form, producing the most useful feedback and the least junk. Hopefully we'll have the data for you by the end of the week; I can't thank the editors who volunteered to hand-code enough; we wouldn't be where we are now without you.

All this useful information means we can move on to finalising the tool, and so we're holding an extra-important office hours session on Friday, 6th January at 19:00 UTC in #wikimedia-office. If you can't make it, drop me a note and I'll be happy to provide logs so you can see what went on - if you can make it, but will turn up late, bear in mind that I'll be hanging around until 23:00 UTC to deal with latecomers :).

Things we'll be discussing include:

  • The design of the feedback page, which will display all the feedback gathered through whichever form comes out on top.
  • An expansion of the pool of articles which have AFT5 displayed, from 0.1 percent to 0.3 (which is what we were going to do initially anyway)
  • An upcoming Request for Comment that will cover (amongst other things) who can access various features in the tool, such as the "hide" button.

If you can't make it to the session, all this stuff will be displayed on the talkpage soon after, so no worries ;). Hope to see you all there! Thanks, Okeyes (WMF) (talk) 04:50, 2 January 2012 (UTC)

Non-free rationale for File:Suddenlink Logo.png

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Suddenlink Logo.png. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. --Geniac (talk) 01:29, 5 January 2012 (UTC)

Hey there. Sorry, I was intending to put two pages into the Pennsylvania German Wikipedia, and I did not realize I was in the English Wikipedia. I did notice, though, that the reason for the deletion was listed as "clear copyright infringement," which is not the case. The page was simply in the Wikipedia of the wrong language. Thank you for deleting it from the English Wikipedia. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Verzannt (talkcontribs) 23:55, 8 January 2012 (UTC)

Article Feedback Tool - things to do

Hey guys! A couple of highly important things to do over the next few weeks:

  • We've opened a Request for Comment on several of the most important aspects of the tool, including who should be able to hide inappropriate comments. It will remain open until 20 January; I encourage everyone with an interest to take part :).
  • A second round of feedback categorisation will take place in a few weeks, so we can properly evaluate which design works the best and keeps all the junk out :P. All volunteers are welcome and desired; there may be foundation swag in it for you!

Update: new user warning test results available

Hi WP:UWTEST member, we wanted to share a quick update on the status of the project. Here's the skinny:

  1. We're happy to say we have a new round of testing results available! Since there are tests on several Wikipedias, we're collecting all results at the project page on Meta. We've also now got some help from Wikimedia Foundation data analyst Ryan Faulkner, and should have more test results in the coming weeks.
  2. Last but not least, check out the four tests currently running at the documentation page.

Thanks for your interest, and don't hesitate to drop by the talk page if you have a suggestion or question. Maryana (WMF) (talk) 19:26, 20 January 2012 (UTC)

Two Pilots

Hello,

I'm the author of the Two Pilots page and i'm wonder why you put speedy deletion. I'm using this page as a starting point: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toy_Kingdom and i don't see any difference, why some company can have page on the Wikipedia and some other is not. Can you explain this ? I even did not finished the page yet.

Hi

I saw on your userpage that you would like to become an administrator one day. Can I nominate you? Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 16:56, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your offer, but I feel that I am not currently active enough to accept this nomination. It wouldn't make sense. Logan Talk Contributions 22:06, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Invitation to Berlin hackathon, and possible sponsorship - template makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon, 1-3 June in Berlin, Germany. Registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, then please register by May 1st and mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, teaching, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

We want to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Check out the the developers' days preceding Wikimania in July in Washington, DC and our other events.

Best wishes! - Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation's Volunteer Development Coordinator. Please reply on my talk page at mediawiki.org. Sumana Harihareswara, Wikimedia Foundation Volunteer Development Coordinator 00:59, 20 April 2012 (UTC)
