Speciesboxes[edit]

Just to note that it's |taxon= not |binomial= in {{Speciesbox}}es. Peter coxhead (talk) 22:37, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Of course, thanks for catching another slip. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 22:41, 30 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Fixing missing taxon parameters[edit]

Hi, I'm not sure if you know this (apologies if you do), but the easiest way to add a missing taxon parameter when the article relies on the page title is to paste in | taxon = {{subst:PAGENAME}}; it saves having to type something different in each case. Peter coxhead (talk) 10:04, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Peter, no I didn't know about this code. I was using copy/paste for the page name but typing | taxon = in each time. I also just learned of Bambot's template search tool from this very gnomish cleanup task as well (very useful). There is still much more for me to learn, even by doing it slowly and incrementally. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 10:59, 4 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I find there's always more to learn, however long you edit Wikipedia!
{{Automatic taxobox/sandbox}} now uses a Lua version which when made live will put articles with taxoboxes missing |taxon= in Category:Automatic taxoboxes relying on page title. When populated, it will be more up-to-date than the list here. I'm still testing the sandbox version, but hope to make it live later today or tomorrow. Event coordinator granted[edit]

After reviewing your request for the "eventcoordinator" permission, I have enabled the flag on your account. Keep in mind these things:

  • The event coordinator right removes the limit on the maximum number of new accounts that can be created in a 24-hour period.
  • The event coordinator right allows you to temporarily add the "confirmed" permission to newly created accounts. You should not grant this for more than 10 days.
  • The event coordinator right is not a status symbol. If it remains unused, it is likely to be removed. Abuse of the event coordinator right will result in its removal by an administrator.
  • Please note, if you were previously a member of the "account creator" group, your flag may have been converted to this new group.

If you no longer require the right, let me know, or ask any other administrator. Drop a note on my talk page if you run into troubles or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of the event coordinator right. Happy editing! ~Swarm~ {talk} 22:04, 8 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Leucotheidae[edit]

Hi. If the type species of a genus is no longer in that genus, then the genus ceases to exist, even if there are other species placed there. As such, all that matters is the type species of Eucharis (which I think is a junior homonym and permanently unavailable). If the type species of the former Eucharis is now placed in Leucothea, then that's the end of the issue. Dyanega (talk) 19:18, 8 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

User:Jacobmakesstuff[edit]

Hi Loopy30, I hope this is the right way to get in touch. Thanks for your message - my Coral contribution was as the punchline to a family joke we shared at dinner last night. My apologies, I completely forgot to change that back and I've also just read the wiki policy you linked to my page. I will make sure I adhere to it from hereon in!

My alteration to the Mammia Mia! Here We Go Again page was genuine - My 'day job' is acting and producing in Theatre and Film. You'll often find with film credits on pages like IMDB that a lot of cast are left off, this may be due to their scenes being cut or perhaps their name isn't 'big enough' to warrant the effort. Films will credit every single person in the Cinema credits and on Director's Cut edition DVD's but not always on standard commercial DVD's.

Can we either reinstate the edit, or add another a sub page for 'additional cast' which I will be happy to fill in the info for. I can cross reference between my production cast list and the IMDB credits and add in the extra few names.

Thanks, JMS — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jacobmakesstuff (talkcontribs) 10:58, 25 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jacob, while there are many things you can add to Wikipedia articles, it is highly recommended that you avoid anything that you have a personal connection to (see WP:COI). Also, any new information should be referenced and unfortunately as user generated material, IMDb is not considered as a reliable source (see WP:UGC). There is additional information to help start you editing in the welcome message on your talk page and if you have any more questions, you are welcome to ask here. The Original Barnstar
For incredible bravery in formatting and sorting the subordinate taxa at Mycale (genus), which I was too much a coward to undertake. ♠PMC(talk) 03:39, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you PMC, I fear there may be more such pages looming in the future as I work my way through the taxonomy of the Porifera. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 12:16, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ooh, good luck. ♠PMC(talk) 15:01, 8 April 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The IOC has FINALLY published (albeit a draft) of the common name change to Canada Jay. I'll wait until it becomes fully accepted there, but if anyone wants to go through the trouble of changing everything, I won't stop anyone.....Pvmoutside (talk) 00:45, 6 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Precious[edit]

"sharing information is akin to sharing love"

Thank you for basic articles about birds such as Rio Madeira antwren, White-throated toucanet and Mongolian short-toed lark, for adding subspecies and other details, for welcoming and inviting new users, for redirects and disambiguations, for easy suoort, - you are an awesome Wikipedian!

More detail[edit]

Rather than saying Move to accepted name as per ASW 6.0 without any link to a discussion, please include a link. I can see that Ranoidea is used in US sources but not in Australia (which still uses Litoria), so it makes it hard to understand the reasoning for the move when it is a frog native to Australia and not the US. Bidgee (talk) 22:31, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bidgee, the move was done as part of the Amphibians and Reptiles project to convert to automatic taxoboxes. Although the latest Amphibian Species of the World (ASW 6.0) is hosted by an American institution (the AMNH), it is being used as the accepted project standard for amphibian taxonomy world-wide. You are likely to see more such moves in the near future as project editors bring existing amphibian taxonomy in line with the project standard. For more information on the background to this activity, see the discussion here. 'Cheers, Loopy30 (talk) 22:48, 1 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Your help desk question[edit]

Regarding this question, have you tried WP:VPT?— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 19:22, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Vchimpanzee, I started there but it led me to VP where I asked the question. As it is not resolved yet, it wouldn't hurt to ask there as well. Loopy30 (talk) 21:56, 22 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]

"Prostherapis" dunni[edit]

We do, I think, need a better way of handling "quoted" genera in automated taxoboxes. I think the way "Prostherapis" dunni set up now is the best that can be done at present. I don't think it's right to say that the genus is "incertae sedis", because by the logic of a binomial, the first word is the genus, however uncertain. Peter coxhead (talk) 13:25, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Compare with "Dryosaurus" grandis. Peter coxhead (talk) 13:32, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Peter, in this case though, I thought that the genus was incertae sedis and the quoted genus was just included as a placeholder to form a binomial until the taxonomic situation was resolved. In that way, the genus listing is Incertae sedis, as the species isn't currently placed in any genus at all, not Prostherapis, or even "Prostherapis". Also, having recently moved quite a few frog articles to pages with quotations around the genus name, I was looking to see how best to automate their taxoboxes. Speciesbox doesn't seem to work but Automatic taxobox does seem to come close. Is there a way that the taxobox script can abbreviate the genus name in the species entry line? For example, instead of repeating the full binomial on two succesive lines, render the output as "P." dunni? This would reduce redundancy while also maintain better consistency with other species articles across the TOL? Loopy30 (talk) 15:26, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this is one of the items included under my comment we .. need a better way of handling "quoted" genera in automated taxoboxes. There's always a trade-off between handling more cases in automated taxoboxes and not making the code so complicated that it's hard to maintain. My initial thought is that the best approach might be to continue to use {{Automatic taxobox}}, but if the genus name has ".." around it, then leave out the genus line altogether, so for "Prostherapis" dunni, the taxobox would have:
Family: Aromobatidae
Species: "P." dunni
Binomial name
"Prostherapis" dunni
Leaving out the genus line can achieved at present by setting |parent=Aromobatidae in Template:Taxonomy/"Prostherapis" dunni, but the code that italicizes and abbreviates species names needs to be modified to handle the quote marks to produce "P." dunni.
What do you think? (I alerted Plantdrew to this thread, because he does a lot of work with taxoboxes.) Peter coxhead (talk) 17:25, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it will achieve the aim. However, I am also aware of the balance needed between code complexity and the limited number of users available over the long term to maintain it. Loopy30 (talk) 21:25, 10 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It certainly bothers me that the only editors who currently appear to work on the underlying code for the automated taxobox system are me and Jts1882. I have no desire to claim ownership! Peter coxhead (talk) 14:03, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I've updated the system so that it abbreviates a binomial like "Prostherapis" dunni to "P." dunni (ideally the double quote marks shouldn't be italicized, but I haven't fixed this yet). So there are now two ways of handling such a species, which I've described at Wikipedia talk:Automated taxobox system/Archive 3#Quoted genus names. Peter coxhead (talk) 17:06, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As a temporary alternative to coding the italics you could use “Prostherapis”. The left and right double quotes seem immune to italicisation (unless very subtle). This is sometimes used in the literature, e.g. here.   Jts1882 | talk  17:39, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Jts1882: the MoS enthusiasts wouldn't like that solution! MOS:CURLY is very clear, although I don't find the rationale for it very convincing. Peter coxhead (talk) 20:35, 11 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Crocodylus quotes[edit]

Is there a reason why "Crocodylus acer" has the entire binomial quoted while "Crocodylus" affinis has just the genus? And Crocodylus" megarhinus is missing a quote. Plantdrew (talk) 16:19, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Plantdrew, "Crocodylus acer" seems to have been an error on my part (corrected now, thanks for pointing it out), but Crocodylus" megarhinus seems to have been caused by a bot (EmausBot) as it was moved to correct a double redirect on 07 Nov. I will have to ask an admin or someone with file mover rights to fix that one. Loopy30 (talk) 16:55, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Page mover granted[edit]

Hello, Loopy30. Your account has been granted the "extendedmover" user right, either following a request for it or demonstrating familiarity with working with article names and moving pages. You are now able to rename pages without leaving behind a redirect, move subpages when moving the parent page(s), and move category pages.

Please take a moment to review Wikipedia:Page mover for more information on this user right, especially the criteria for moving pages without leaving redirect. Please remember to follow post-move cleanup procedures and make link corrections where necessary, including broken double-redirects when suppressredirect is used. This can be done using Special:WhatLinksHere. It is also very important that no one else be allowed to access your account, so you should consider taking a few moments to secure your password. As with all user rights, be aware that if abused, or used in controversial ways without consensus, your page mover status can be revoked.

Useful links:

If you do not want the page mover right anymore, just let me know, and I'll remove it. Thank you, and happy editing! TonyBallioni (talk) 01:34, 8 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
