Hi, what you could do while waiting for me to look over the article (if you haven't done this already) is check out US court case articles recently promoted to FA (and their FAC noms while you're at it) -- I'm sure there have been some this year, e.g. Smith Act trials of Communist Party leaders. Cheers, Ian Rose (talk) 02:51, 23 July 2012 (UTC)

Okay, had a quick read through -- interesting case. I can't really comment on the coverage/detail, as it's not my area of expertise, so most of what I've got to say relates to prose, referencing, and style:
  • Per my comment earlier, I'd check that the formatting of the infobox is in line with other legal cases articles at FA-level (it may well be, but I haven't checked myself).
  • We need to see "Jackie Washington" in the second sentence of the lead, not just "Washington".
  • At FA-level I'd expect to see every paragraph end in a citation. A number don't at the moment, e.g. last one under Washington's trial, but check the rest of the article.
  • "The Court's due process jurisprudence was expanded with the 1948 decision in In re Oliver which revised the breadth of the 'fundamental fairness' right." and "Chief Justice Earl Warren wrote the unanimous opinion of the Court which reversed the decision of the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals." -- this is pedantic but generally a comma should precede "which", and if that doesn't work then "that" should be used instead; in the sentences I've quoted, probably a comma before the "which" works best, while in the second you could either insert a comma before "which" or replace it with "that".
  • Don't think you need to link majority opinion in the Warren image caption -- it's linked in the paragraph next to it.
  • Prefer not to see one-paragraph subsections, e.g. Harlan's concurrence, although I don't think there's a law against it... ;-)
  • "Justice Harlan wrote a separate concurrence which only disagreed to the reasoning of Chief Justice Warren's opinion" -- aside from switching "which" to "that", it should be "disagreed with", not "disagreed to".
  • I'd try to keep things all in one tense, at least per paragraph, if possible. For instance, Subsequent developments begins "An article in the Georgetown Law Review, by attorney Martin Hewett, was critical of the decision [past tense]. Hewett's main criticism of the Supreme Court's decision in Washington is based on on the Court's lack of a standard in which to evaluate whether certain evidence is "material" to a defendant's case [present tense]. Hewett noted that in a post-Washington decision in 1973, the Court applied a 'case-specific' decision rather than a "general constitutional standard" [past tense]." -- the second sentence could just as easily be made past tense.
  • "...the "actual reliability of the evidence" in cases..." -- consider putting "(italics in original)" after the quote (assuming the italics are in the original); I only bring this up because you employ italics yourself in "states of other procedural guarantees", where it's not a quote, and so it might appear you've added the italics to the "reliability of the evidence" quote as well. The Tea Leaf - Issue Five

Stop by for a tasty glass of wiki-iced tea at the Teahouse, today!

Hi! Welcome to the fifth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Guest activity increased in July. Questions are up from an average of 36 per week in June to 43 per week in July, and guest profile creation has also increased. This is likely a result of the automatic invite experiments we started near the end of month, which seeks to lessen the burden on hosts and other volunteers who manually invite editors. During the last week of July, questions doubled in the Teahouse! (But don't let that deter you from inviting editors to the Teahouse, please, there are still lots of new editors who haven't found Teahouse yet.)
  • More Teahouse hosts than ever. We had 12 new hosts sign up to participate at the Teahouse! We now have 35 hosts volunteering at the Teahouse. Feel free to stop by and see them all here.
  • Phase two update: Host sprint. In August, the Teahouse team plans to improve the host experience by developing a simpler new-host creation process, a better way of surfacing active hosts, and a host lounge renovation. Take a look at the plan and weigh in here.
  • New Teahouse guest barnstar is awarded to first recipient: Charlie Inks. Using the Teahouse barnstar designed by Heatherawalls, hosts hajatvrc and Ryan Vesey created the new Teahouse Guest Barnstar. The first recipient is Charlie Inks, for her boldness in asking questions at the Teahouse. Check out the award in action here.
  • Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania! The Teahouse was a hot topic at Wikimania this past month, where editor retention and interface design was heavily discussed. Sarah and Jonathan presented the Teahouse during the Wikimedia Fellowships panel. Slides can be viewed here. A lunch was also held at Wikimania for Teahouse hosts.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Bulgaria Info Boxes Dispute

Hi Lord Roem,

Any update on the dispute. Again, I've added tons of references, why am I being neglected? Isn't WP about the correct content? Please, help bring this forward or advise on next steps. Ximhua (talk) 01:01, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

I haven't been following the recent changes to the Bulgaria topic articles, nor am I knowledgable in that area to make such a determination. However, I can advise you on future courses to take in terms of dispute resolution. I think the best option is to start an RfC to gain broader community input on the debate. If that fails, have another go at DRN, but always try to keep regular lines of communication open. Best, Lord Roem (talk) 06:02, 14 August 2012 (UTC)

Don't forget to make your new host profile!

Hi Roem! Thanks for being a host at the Teahouse! We're working on the Host lounge renovations and we've created a new way for hosts to become hosts. Please take a few minutes and test it out here, by creating your new host profile. It's also a good excuse to update your image, quote, and information about yourself :) You can join in on the host discussion about the new feature here. See you at the Teahouse! Hey there Lord Roem, I noticed that you haven't been very active at the dispute resolution noticeboard lately where you listed yourself as a volunteer - I was hoping if you had some spare time if you could take a look there and offer some assistance. The Tea Leaf - Issue Six

Hi! Welcome to the sixth edition of The Tea Leaf, the official newsletter of the Teahouse!

  • Teahouse serves over 700 new editors in six months on Wikipedia! Since February 27, 741 new editors have participated at the Teahouse. The Q&A board and the guest intro pages are more active than ever.
A lovely little teahouse nestled in Germany from Wiki Loves Monuments
  • Automatic invites are doing the trick: 50% more new editors visiting each week. Ever since HostBot's automated invite trial phase began we've seen a boost in new editor participation. Automating a baseline set of invitations also allows Teahouse hosts to focus on serving hot cups of help to guests, instead of spending countless hours inviting.
  • Guests to the Teahouse continue to edit more & interact more with other community members than non-Teahouse guests according to six month metrics. Teahouse guests make more than twice the article edits and edit more talk pages than other new editors.
  • New host process implemented which encourages anyone to get started as a Teahouse host in a few easy steps. Stop by the hosts page and become a Teahouse host today!
  • Host lounge renovations nearing completion. Working closely with Teahouse hosts, we've made some major renovations to the Teahouse Host Lounge - the main hangout and resource space for hosts. Learn more about the improvements here.

As always, thanks for supporting the Teahouse project! Stop by and visit us today!

Invitation to comment at Monty Hall problem RfC

Because of your interest in dispute resolution,, I am inviting you to comment on the following RfC:

Talk:Monty Hall problem#Conditional or Simple solutions for the Monty Hall problem?

This dispute has been going on for over ten years and there have been over 1,300,000 words posted on the article talk page (by comparison, all of the Harry Potter books together total 1,084,170 words). Over the years the dispute has been through multiple noticeboards, mediators, and even the Arbitration Committee without resolving the conflict, so a lot of wisdom is needed here. --Guy Macon (talk) 00:52, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

Lord Roem, please check the recent history of this article and the attendant AfD. You approved this for DYK (this version or thereabouts, I suppose) so you may have an opinion on it. I found nothing in the article or its history that independently verified the claims to fame, and I note that most of he work referred to in the article (and cited in the hook) wasn't even done by herself alone. In short, the article struck me as vanispam, a pretty clear example of it, and after pruning and searching I saw no option but AfD. Thank you. Drmies (talk) 03:55, 7 September 2012 (UTC)

WikiProject Good articles (Participant Clean-Up)

Hello, you are receiving this message because you are currently a participant of WikiProject Good articles. Since the creation of the WikiProject, over 200 user's have joined to help review good article nominations and contribute to other sections of the WikiProject. Over the years, several of these users have stopped reviewing articles and/or have become inactive with the project but are still listed as participates. Sorry for having to send out a second message but a user has brought to my attention that a point mentioned in the first message should be clarified. Friendly reminder

Lord Roem, I'd like to take the opportunity to remind you (or perhaps make you aware of?) Wikipedia:Arbitration_Committee/Clerks/Procedures#Managing_and_closing_cases point #16. In particular, "If the decision includes the use of restrictions on the editing of an individual editor, list the details at Wikipedia:Editing restrictions". You recently closed the clarification request on civility enforcement, but did not post the restriction to Wikipedia:Editing restrictions. Thank you for your attention, --Hammersoft (talk) 20:23, 25 October 2012 (UTC)

Yes, I am aware of that point, but I see where the confusion is. That specific note - going to the Editing restrictions page - is just on the 'closing cases' section but is not duplicated in the WP:AC/C/P section on amendments, which I had in front of me while enacting the motion. -- Lord Roem (talk) 22:04, 25 October 2012 (UTC)
  • Yeah! I agree. I'll put it on there in a moment. I was just explaining why I didn't put it there in my initial cross-posting of the notices. -- Lord Roem (talk) 00:30, 26 October 2012 (UTC)
