Images[edit]

I took a quick look at the letter. It looks like you mentioned only free licenses in your original query, and the librarian said we could use the images but did not tell us under what license. It would be ideal if the library actually used the phrase "We release these images under the GFDL license" or "We release these images under the Creative Commons license" or something similar.

I think we are on solid ground to use the images, but which license to apply is the problem. I think I would use {{cc-by-2.0}}. Most people think it is less cumbersome for images than GFDL. On the image page, you should also place info about the image such as its source. More info is at Wikipedia:Image_use_policy#Adding_images. Images without a source may be deleted. You should also link to that permission letter from the Image page. There is also an e-mail address to which you should send the permission letter, but I can't find that at the moment. I will get back to you on that.

Following these guidelines is very important. We take this very seriously. There are even some users who take it too seriously and may hastily delete an image on a small technicality. I'd hate to see you spend a lot of time and energy finding and uploading images, only to have them deleted.

I'll look for that e-mail adress. Please let me know if you have any other questions. Johntex\talk 22:46, 17 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image copyright problem with Image:William_H_Sewell.JPG[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:William_H_Sewell.JPG. The image has been identified as not specifying the copyright status of the image, which is required by Wikipedia's policy on images. If you don't indicate the copyright status of the image on the image's description page, using an appropriate copyright tag, it may be deleted some time in the next seven days. If you have uploaded other images, please verify that you have provided copyright information for them as well.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

Notification of arbitration case[edit]

This is to notify you that I am making an arbitration request concernining the University of Wisconsin redirect at [Wikipedia:Requests for arbitration]. Miaers 00:32, 19 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Wisconsin Field House[edit]

I would move it to Wisconsin Field House, not The Wisconsin Field House as Miaers has redirected it to. When I did the rename it was as most people know it as (UW Fieldhouse) in casual conversation, as I could not find an official page at the time. But going by g-hits, Wisconsin Fieldhouse definitely outranks "UW Fieldhouse" and "The Wisconsin Field House". I leave it to others to debate this as I did the article name change very early in its infacy and much more information has been added since then. Nate 00:36, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Endowment[edit]

The economic impact is the amount UW receives from the society not what it gives. If you look at those numbers from UW website, you can see that they are the funding sources. The 300 million you want to use is obviously wrong. The endowment of both UW-Madison and UW-Milwaukee are larger than that figure. It is ridiculous to see the total endowment of the system is less than that of an individual campus. Also the number from the UW website should be the authoritative and accurate. The source you pointed out is just an unkown organization on the internet that doesn't have any credit at all. Miaers 15:11, 10 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, does my reply make sense to you? Miaers 21:42, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That's odd. The endowment of the system should be the total of all the individual universities. What you just said basically sounds like that the Board of the system has an endowment of 300 mil. That will be ridiculous. Also the UW website provides its funding sources. It is totally appropriate to use it as a source for the endowment figure. Miaers 03:35, 12 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Your logic is totally wrong. These foundations are part of the individual campuses which are also part of the system. What do you mean they are separate from the UW system. Miaers 04:06, 12 May 2007 (UTC)

DEFAULTSORT[edit]

When you put the DEFAULTSORT template in an article, the article is sorted as if all the categories listed have something like "Category name|Smith, John" after them, even if they don't. So, if you have a lot of categories listed, rather than having "Category name|Smith, John" for each, just use DEFAULTSORT:Smith, John and the article will be sorted surname, first name in each of the category lists. It's a way of saving time; even if all the categories are already sorted, additional ones won't have to be. I noticed that a template had been created for faculty of the University of Wisconsin, and that the individual listed categories had been sorted by surname, but that the template-created ones had not, so I put DEFAULTSORT in those articles so they would be listed surname-first in those categories as well.

Any sorting listed on the actual categories takes precedence over DEFAULTSORT. Say if you got "DEFAULTSORT:Smith, John" and then later on "Category|John Smith": in that individual category the article will be sorted as "first name surname". Hope this helps. T@nn 04:30, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (File:Tara Calico Polaroid.jpg)[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Tara Calico Polaroid.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 04:07, 6 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page.
