Venice Film Festival

Hi! I'm an italian user, sorry if my english is not good enough. the 1940, 1941 and 1942 Venice film festivals were disregarded because of the interference of fascism. if you look the posters of the 1940 festival and the 1947 festival you can see that are both marked as 8th. for example the 1962 festival was the 23rd edition (as confimerd by the official poster) and not the 27th like in the template. furthermore in 1969 the festival was not competitive but took place regularly. --Errix (talk) 10:03, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

It's a disrespectful comment, not to mention off-topic in that particular thread. If you have an issue with his comments, bring it up with him privately on his talk page, though any chance to provide constructive criticism is past. Like WP:DR says, focus on the content. I emailed him about it too since I've provided some Saw sources for him in recent correspondence. However, this kind of back-and-forth will intensify because the other editor wants to have the last word. Like I said, it's not the forum for focusing on the contributor instead of the content. It's one editor, so in discussions, a contrasting viewpoint will not be cancelling out all others. We've all been the minority viewpoint from time to time. I agree that some discussions can be limited, but your aforementioned comments have been hostile. It's possible to suggest in a cordial manner that something is not worth worrying about. The talk page ought to be a place where all editors can feel comfortable asking questions or making requests. In other words, we want it to be okay for stupid questions to be asked, but we should be able to respond and say, the answer's not that important, adding more information about that topic for readers is. We want to avoid a chilling effect on that talk page and should be able to offer advice in a non-brusque manner. I hope you'll consider that if you're going to frequent these discussions. Greetings. I apologize for bothering you, but I already tried in WP:Russia and user:Ezhiki told me they are not very active lately and probably would not be able to respond. Anyway, I wonder if there is any chance that the article about Mikheil Chiaureli's 1950 Stalinist personality cult film The Fall of Berlin (film) could ever be promoted to GA status? Stubs

Yeah, I know. What one objector hasn't pointed out is that actually all the articles meet notability requirements and could be expanded reasonably fully. If notability is not an issue... Is it not our purpose to identify actually notable topics which have been excluded so far due to systematic bias and try to cover them? Unless anybody can point out grave errors and non notability to any of my stubs they should just really be quiet!! It is always those though who never do any work on wikipedia with articles who turn up to moan though. As if I'm not already doing enough on here... ♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:11, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

I can see the all articles must be high quality approach and really I'd rather every article on wikipedia was of GA quality. But unless the system and approach of the project dramatically changes and all stubs and poor articles are deleted/moved to the main space and only GA level content permitted in the encyclopedia then they do not have an argument against mass creation. They have a point about some of the unreferenced ones though, so I'll try to add a source/fact.♦ Dr. Blofeld 09:27, 1 November 2011 (UTC)

You contributed to a recent discussion about an editor who was creating many stubs. The conclusion was that this was just a case of a prolific editor, with no violation of policy. the list is not well sourced. most of its sources are tabloid like news articles, with only a few book sources, and most of the articles are in a foreign langauge- chinese. this list actually constitutes WP:SYNTHESIS and WP:ORIGINAL RESEARCH, by putting together unconnected incidents.

Imagine if I culled news articles regarding every time a burglary happened, and created an article called "list of Burglary incidents", and used those articles as references, while sprinkling in a few book sources about burglaries. My desire to delete the article has nothing to do with the type of content it represents (relating to sexual body parts)Bunser (talk) 01:52, 9 November 2011 (UTC)

And it is also one of the appropriate formats, as he lived part of his life in the US, so we are able to choose from the three formats. Unless a format is not appropriate, we are as I understand supposed to stick with the initial format chosen in the article. You can reply here if you like, but no reply needed. I spent more time than I should have recently looking at the applicable guidances, as I've been communicating with an editor who thinks it is good practice to use two divergent date formats in the same footnote. Sometimes ... Anyway, I know you do great work, and simply wanted to leave a longer explanation than in my edit summary revert. I understand your rationale as well, and had that been the first-chosen usage, would have deferred for the reasons you mention, which of course are quite valid ones as well. There must have been much edit warring over such issues between other editors, because the rule (now) has a "default to initial usage if arguably OK" clause. Btw, I imagine you will be busy soon w/greater focus on the upcoming Olympics. Quick random thought -- do you think that if someone has now qualified for the 2012 Olympics, that they are automatically notable for wp purposes, even though they have yet to compete? 2011 Pension Strikes

The proposed merge with another article is pointing to the wrong vote. Thanks for the support. I could not believe an article had not been started about this. After all there is about 2 million involved - and I was not one of them! I definitely support the strike. It is crazy they make these small cuts to other areas when the bank executives were given 850 billion for "bailouts" (or is that really future bonuses?). The bank execs should pay this back ASAP. Future film projects

Hi There. I think you recently created a number of new articles on potential future films (Arthur & Lancelot, Liberace, etc.) which are currently going through the AfD process as failing WP:NFILM. But I just wanted to flag up for you that a couple of editors have suggest blocking you because of these new articles which they (wrongly, I think) asserted were hoaxes - see: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Magic, Magic (2013 film). I don't know you at all, but you seem to be an active member of the Wiki community, and I think blocks are only for extreme cases, so I just wanted to make you generally aware of those comments and allow you to participate in that conversation if you wanted to do so. --Legis (talk - contribs) 01:39, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

stub templates and botting

ref: this discussion. Can you explain what is so critical about the placement of stub templates that it requires a block? There isn't even much of a reason that we put them after the cats but before the interwikis except that it's a convention we've adopted. It has almost know effect on the display of the article (it does move the category to the beginning of the category list but, other than stubs, categories are in no particular order to begin with). The bot was doing nothing harmful that I could see. BTW, I would consider moving the stub templates back to be a trivial edit and therefore not even allowed.--Doug.^{(talk • contribs)} 13:00, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Yes, but that is just a WP:Guideline and is subject to common sense checking; moreover, the template appears in exactly the same place whether you place it before the categories or after, so the purpose stated in the Guideline (but not referenced in the MOS) is fulfilled. Additionally, bot was moving a minority of templates and it was tested, it was using the highly tested category.py module of pywikipediabot. That is not an untested bot. I believe Reedy meant that he didn't have time to debug the bot script himself - but he did post in #pywikipediabot before the block was in effect, which is how I became aware of the issue. So, my concern is that Reedy was acting in good faith and the bot was doing negligible if any harm, the issue could have been dealt with other ways. I should have posted to the ANI the moment I decided not to block, declining the block so we wouldn't have had so much drama. I believe you should have addressed the matter with the bot handler directly and not on ANI, but moreover, I think your approach to Reedy did not demonstrate AGF and was an over-reaction to a minor issue.--Doug.^{(talk • contribs)} 13:28, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

I'm talking about comments like "Oh the drama indeed. Now go and fix it" was a bit rude, we don't generally order people around here. "Someone block this fool and quick" : 1 - the word "fool", 2- it was anything but urgent. And for lead up, your additions to the thread here go from "please ensure you don't move the stub tag from the foot of the page" (the bot never changed the placement of the template on the displayed page that I can see) to notice of an ANI thread in 11 minutes. You were dealing with a highly trusted dev who said he was going to try to fix it, if he screwed things up he was more than competent to fix them or get them fixed. This just wasn't worth this level of concern and ANI is drama by definition, it rarely helps in situations that aren't serious and often hurts as I believe it most certainly did here. --Doug.^{(talk • contribs)} 13:58, 15 December 2011 (UTC)

Accolades for The Artist

Hi Lugnuts :) Yesterday I edited the table by putting for almost every award the exact date of ceremony but it has been been removed by a non-registered user. I thought it was better to do it my way because I saw it on List of accolades received by Up in the Air which is considered as a model by Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Film. Maybe the person thought it was not neccesary yet but I was thinking since the film will probably win more nominations and consequently have its own accolades page, it was ok to already put the precise dates and even if the section doesn't get its own page, wouldn't it be better to have the dates of ceremony?
