Template in signatures

{{helpme}}

According to WP:SIG#Transclusion of templates, I'm not allowed to transclude templates. However, I have a | in my signature. I'm currently using {{!}}. Is this allowed? Or do I have to use <nowiki>|</nowiki>? MC10 | Sign here! 17:44, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

It isn't allowed as it causes massive server lag, as it is still a template. If you are using {{!}}, you need to change it to what you suggested. This is because every time the signature is used, a template call is issued. I suggest you find all instances of this that you used and change it to something that will not cause lag.— dαlus Contribs 17:47, 3 May 2009 (UTC)
Daedalus is correct, using a template will cause drain on the server, no matter which template you are using. I suggest you just use another character to accomplish almost the same result if you think the <nowiki>|</nowiki> is too long for the sig. Regards SoWhy 19:15, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

Editing others' user pages

As has been addressed to you at Simple wiki, please stop editing others' user pages without their consent to do so, especially to add links and interwikis like you did here. Majorly is active on a few projects, so if he doesn't have the interwikis given, that's probably because he prefers not to. I'm sure other users are this way, too (I don't have my interwikis listed, and I would revert someone who added them to my user page). either way (talk) 20:47, 3 May 2009 (UTC)

My RFC

Please remove my RFC from the approved RFC list. My RFC has not yet been certified by two users, so, therefore, cannot be listed as approved. Thanks, either way (talk) 10:40, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Two people have certified it: the creator of the page and download. MC10 | Sign here! 22:04, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
No, only one has. See Wikipedia:Requests_for_comment/Either_way#Users_certifying_the_basis_for_this_dispute. either way (talk) 23:08, 8 May 2009 (UTC)
There are now two users certifying it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Download (talkcontribs) 02:50, 9 May 2009 (UTC)
No, there is still only one. Neutralhomer only supported the view, he did not endorse it. FMAFan1990 was out of line to move his comment to somewhere other than where Neutralhomer placed it. If Neutralhomer wishes to certify, he should add evidence and place his signature in the certification section. either way (talk) 03:06, 9 May 2009 (UTC)

Hi

I noticed you edited my guestbook putting in the summary box subst: or something like that. What did you actually do? I don't notice any changes and I just wanted to know. Ross Rhodes (T C) Sign! 16:57, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

What exactly were you trying to do here? -- Smjg (talk) 10:14, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

If the |subst= parameter was used incorrectly, the template won't screw up. MC10 | Sign here! 02:01, 12 May 2009 (UTC)
But with your change, the templates didn't work anymore when left unsubsted, which should still work. Amalthea 13:19, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

ref changes

I saw you made some changes to the refs in some articles. As far as I can tell, <div class="references-small"> had no effect and {{refbegin}} had no effect except unnecessarily indenting the references. What are these intended to do? Bubba73 (talk), 05:20, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I use the {{reflist}} series to fix references. <div class="references-small"> makes the book title look better. Basically, I like the smaller text for the references. MC10 | Sign here! 01:05, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
As far as I can tell, the "small" didn't change the size of the references and the reflist only indented the references when there was no need to. Bubba73 (talk), 01:26, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
There, fixed using {{reflist}}. MC10 | Sign here! 01:51, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Vandalism template

Hi,

I noticed that many (all ?) vandalism templates (uw-vandalism 2, 3, ...and uw-delete 2,...) are broken when you put them directly with {{uw-vandalism3|Test}}. They still appear ok when you substitute with {{subst:uw-vandalism3|Test}}.

Let me show you what happens (you can also check by yourself in the sandbox) :

No subst : Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, {#if:Test|as you did at Test,}} you will be blocked from editing.

With subst : Please stop your disruptive editing. If you continue to vandalize Wikipedia, as you did at Test, you will be blocked from editing.

Since you're the last one to have edited theses templates and i don't understand the language used to code them, could you check why is this happening ?

Thanks in advance, Regards, Ksempac (talk) 11:29, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

Sorry. You can revert my changes if you want to. My changes force you to subst: but the |subst= parameter will work if something wrong is imputed. MC10 | Sign here! 02:08, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
No problem. I wasn't accusing you of anything. I just asked for help from the person most likely to know how to fix this, meaning you. Anyway, it's a moot point now, others complained on the discussion page, and your edits have been reversed. Regards. Ksempac (talk) 09:03, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

You have new messages?

Hi
What's {{You have new messages}} for?
Amalthea 13:20, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

And {{Fullurl}}? An unused wrapper for a parser function that doesn't appear to add any functionality? Amalthea 13:24, 13 May 2009 (UTC)
{{You have new messages}} should be deleted, as it's already located at MediaWiki:Newmessages. There's also no functionality of the template. -download ׀ sign! 00:21, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Delete {{You have new messages}} if you want to, but the reason I created {{fullurl}} is because some people might forget it is a parser function. MC10 | Sign here! 02:14, 14 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh well. Those people will notice quickly enough, and routing it through a template anyway has an unnecessary performance impact. In similar cases, like {{NAMESPACE}} where we previously only had a template which was then turned into a parser function, the then superfluous template was deleted as well. In this case, I could understand it if there were a huge number of transclusions already, but since there aren't I'd rather not tempt people to use the template. Amalthea 09:13, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

references

I noticed that you changed the references in some chess articles. At first I thought "neat, I didn't know how to separate information footnotes from reference footnotes." As a result of your edits, both footnote references and citation references are in the same section, as in King and pawn versus king endgame. Two or three years ago someone took me to task for putting both types of references in the same section. Since then, I've put the footnotes in one section and the citation-type references in another section. (The MOS says you can have both Notes and References, plus Further Reading.) What is your opinion on having both styles of references in the same section? Bubba73 (talk), 04:24, 19 May 2009 (UTC)

Well, according to Template:Reflist, it is okay to combine them into one section. The "notes" section should actually be notes, as I seperated out in Zugzwang. BTW, could you help me find the MOS: section? It's too long. MC10 | Sign here! 02:00, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
WP:Layout#Notes, Footnotes, or References says "section or group of sections", implying that it is OK to have more than one. I think I've seen it somewhere else too. Someone (not me and no one I know) changed back two of the articles you changed yesterday. Bubba73 (talk), 02:09, 20 May 2009 (UTC)
And while I'm thinking about it, most of the notes I put in articles are really external links to ChessGames.com, so the reader can go to the complete game. Except for one or two cases, I have a paper reference for these games so the link to ChessGames.com is really a "more information" external link instead of a reference. The user can use that to play though the moves. Bubba73 (talk), 02:26, 20 May 2009 (UTC)

Editnotices for User: and User talk: subpages

{{helpme}}

How do I create an editnotice for a subpage of a User: or User talk: page? Thanks. MC10 | Sign here! 17:28, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

See WP:EDITNOTICE (surprisingly enough). Amalthea 17:31, 23 May 2009 (UTC)
Hmm, I just noticed that it didn't really elaborate on the point, I was convinced it did. Anyway, only sysops can create editnotices for userspace subpages. If you feel you have a good reason for one in your userspace, go the appropriate talk page and make an {{editprotected}} request, along with the exact code using {{editnotice}}, and an explanation why it's necessary. It's usually enough if you go the talk page of the page you want an editnotice for, and let the admin figure out where it needs to be placed, but you can also directly request it at the right spot. For example, for a subpage User:MC10/Foo, the request would go to Template talk:Editnotice/Page/User:MC10/Foo. Amalthea 20:46, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

De facto

I'm not sure that's true. I'm communicating with that editor, and I think there's a good chance he'll be able to meet sufficient conditions to be unblocked. Thus, your edit - made in perfect good faith, and sound judgment - may turn out to have been premature. I'm not necessarily suggesting you undo it, nor do I intend to revert you; I'm just giving you a heads-up. -GTBacchus(talk) 18:52, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

I agree with you; however, the community seems to have a consensus to indef block. MC10 | Sign here! 18:56, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, I think that's likely to change. I don't think such a consensus can be accurately gauged while the iron is still hot. The community consensus is that they're mad at him, now. -GTBacchus(talk) 18:59, 31 May 2009 (UTC) By the way, this talk page is confusing. My usual way of watching a page and knowing where I am seems to be somehow... disoriented. -GTBacchus(talk) 18:59, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Why is this reply not showing up when I click on your talk page, and what's on my watchlist? -GTBacchus(talk) 19:01, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Oh heck, now I've broken something... -GTBacchus(talk) 19:02, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
(edit conflict) Try purging the page. You should watch User talk:MC10/Messages. MC10 | Sign here! 19:04, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
This is very confusing. I can't use the "discussion" tab at the top of the page to get from a diff to the real thing, the way I usually can. Why is it like this? -GTBacchus(talk) 19:06, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Then after I hit "save" I get dropped at a soft redirect! Why? -GTBacchus(talk) 19:07, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
The soft redirect is because the messages only show up at User talk:MC10. Very unneccessarily complicated, but oh well. MC10 | Sign here! 19:10, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
Well, I often track changes using the "hist" link from my watchlist, then clicking to the diff of interest, and then clicking "discussion" to see the page where the conversation is. That just doesn't work here. -GTBacchus(talk) 19:13, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
I'm getting it fixed — could you help me delete some of the pages? Thanks. MC10 | Sign here! 19:17, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
No prob. -GTBacchus(talk) 19:20, 31 May 2009 (UTC)
This can be fixed very easily, you don't need a subpage in order for the new message link to work properly. If you allow me to, I can fix it.Please reply on my talk page.— dαlus Contribs 22:07, 31 May 2009 (UTC)

Final warning

  1. I was not edit warring on User:DougsTech; I made only one edit (in three edits).
  2. I reverted User talk:DougsTech because there were unfinished conversations that are important to the case.
