Thanks

Hi MER_C, just wanted to say thanks for reverting the vandalism on my user page. Keep up the good work! Regards, Accurizer 14:24, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. MER-C 08:38, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I know not every user likes it if his userpage gets edited, but I still think my removal of the [[Media:Example.ogg]] was legitimate. All pages containing that "Sound" should have that link removed, because it is only added either by accident or by vandalism or experimenting with editing by the editing toolbar. If I would limit that cleanup to articles in the main namespace the list of articles containing it would grow fast and make it impossible to find any new editing experiments which need fixing. Thus I also clean user pages or talk pages. andy 16:37, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Fair enough. It's an unusual place for a test page. I guess that's what threw me off. MER-C 08:45, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you

Thanks for reverting the edit to 'Delacroix".

Hi

Hello, my username is Clevelander but during weekdays while I'm at work, I can't log on to Wikipedia, so I edit as an anon. If you have any further messages that you would like to address to me please put them on my talk page. I hope you understand. -- Clevelander 12:31, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed my revert (thanks for bringing this to my attention, however could please authenticate this by making a dummy edit on this talk page? MER-C 12:38, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't follow you. What do you mean by "dummy edit?" Did I just do it? -- Clevelander 12:56, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Save a new version of the page with an edit summary, but don't change anything (or add a benign space). MER-C 12:58, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you did. I apologize for being vague, but could you do it with your real account? Thanks. MER-C 13:01, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll do it as soon as I get home. I'm at work now and thus I cannot log in. -- Clevelander 13:03, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Testing: 1, 2, 3. Testing: 1, 2, 3. -- Clevelander 19:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I removed the CSD tag from this article as it has grown since then. Tintin (talk) 14:18, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, fair enough. MER-C 14:30, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just notice you're revert of vandalism Bahrain Centre for Human Rights. This page is coming under sustained attacked with revert after revert to an entirely new text. Someone's very determined. Arthur Lee Forever 15:00, 11 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Assistance?

Can you look at this one - Leonard Susskind. Think I'm getting the reverts right but he is giving me grief and placing warnings on my page!! Cheers -- Nigel (Talk) 12:54, 12 August 2006 (UTC)

He's an IP and shouldn't be doing that. I think you should report this over at WP:ANI, I've never seen this kind of behaviour before. MER-C 13:01, 12 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Improving searches for bi-capitalized words

I'm a long time reader but new editor. I added a page for MicroAge and I noticed that when one searches without capitalizing the A in MicroAge there are not results returned. How do I help make a search for "microage" find the MicroAge article? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Markmckeever (talkcontribs)

You need to create a new page with the exact contents
#REDIRECT[[page]]
where page is the page you want it to return. (I've already done that for you.) MER-C 04:03, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I checked it out and I think I understand it. Sorry I didn't sign. I'm still learning... Markmckeever 04:07, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

How did you know???!?

So quickly? Yanksox 06:23, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I was the one who reverted this and knew that it was a blockable offense, especially when he already had a {{blatantvandal}} on his page. MER-C 06:29, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmm, OK. Next time, just wait for the block to actually occur. It threw me off, since I thought someone else blocked when I would have gotten a message...I'm easily confused. Well...um...thanks and keep up the good work. Yanksox 06:35, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
OK. MER-C 06:37, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Excuse me-- Tim Cain

Why did you request speedy deletion? And why did the other guy change the page into a redirect? I already wrote this before, but I'll explain again. There is MORE THAN one famous Tim Cain. That's why I was setting up a disambiguation page in case someone wanted to add the other Tim Cain. Sheesh. -- Solberg 06:46, 13 August 2006 (UTC)Solberg[reply]

At the time I saw it it only had one link. It still does. Therefore it qualifies for speedy deletion under CSD G6, which covers disambig pages with only one link. MER-C 07:00, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

bahrain centre for human rights

Why do you keep changing the entry for the centre? The version you are posting is extremely biased, and inaccurate. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.194.62.22 (talkcontribs)

OK, you may be right but your version has not one wikilink, not one category and is poorly formatted. We would welcome your contribution if you addressed those issues. Thanks. MER-C 07:23, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

hi. that's because when i first edited it (because it was shamefully biased) i spent ages rewriting it with links and then someone reverted it. i tried again but while i was editing a mistake someone reverted it again. and so on, so on. since then i have just tried to keep the new text there at least, but it is routinely being changed. is there some way i could complain/ do something about this?? i will work to improve the entry later.

Just wondering!!!

Why are you editing my page??!?!?!! Jtervin 09:29, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Sock tagging

You are really *&%$# fast! I was trying to work out what the template for suspected sock was and while I was doing it you tagged them (User:ESS EN ARR EWW BEE!!!)! ViridaeTalk 10:55, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've really had it with this vandal. I've tagged over 60 sockpuppets today and he shows no sign of stopping. There's another one... WHACK! MER-C 11:03, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

3 Minutes; impressive!

I couldn’t have my revenge over that lousy OrphanBot for more than 3 minutes eh? Do you know how much pestering I’ve had (usually unjustified) from that lousy thing? Miller 10:59, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

When you upload an image, please select an appropriate license from the drop down box that is labelled "Licensing". That way, you don't have to worry about OrphanBot (unless you have to add a fair use rationale). MER-C 11:40, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
When I was new to Wikipedia I wasn’t familiar with things like that; but I’m getting used to it now. Anyway I can still keep my little picture here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_talk:Simpsons_contributor/Copyright_violations (when you see how many messages have had to be moved there to unclog my talk page you’ll understand my frustration!) .Thanks for your comments and I’m definitely starting to enjoy working on Wikipedia now. Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Jew Aardvark

Hi, Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Jew Aardvark are actually suspected sock puppets of Blu Aardvark. Please see: Category:Suspected Wikipedia sockpuppets of Blu Aardvark and Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets of Blu Aardvark. There must be 50-100 in the Jew Aaarvardk category. I wonder if there's a fast way to merge them. Anomo 17:54, 13 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, all the sockpuppet templates were subst'ed - I had {{subst:sockpuppet|Jew Aardvark}} on my clipboard all day long yesterday because you'd get another one every few minutes. I'll start reapplying the sock templates now. MER-C 04:17, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

About the Lxrun page

I do not object the deletion, but pal, you need to calm down. Look here. I just started the page. -- Femmina 11:44, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The way the article was written meant it wasn't going to survive. In fact, it's already been deleted [1]. Putting that template there took me one click and three characters typed and I tag dozens of pages for speedy deletion per day (under CSDs A1, A3, A6, A7 and G1). And yes, I follow the stock scam that is SCOX from Groklaw and IV but Wikipedia must be NPOV. MER-C 12:00, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for your comments. But this time this is necessary. It was an article with the name Pushpaka Brahmins. One named Agrarianstudies reverted it and there was a conflict in all links. So I changed it into original form. Let it be as this for this time. 202.83.59.21 11:57, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately what you did was a copy and paste move. The proper way to move a page would be to use the move page function which only registered users can do. I'll get on to it. MER-C 12:00, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi , well I don't know if you are an admin. But well if you are then I request you to remove the speedy deletion tag from this article now. This is because I have added more information on the page now and now it is well and truly on the way to offering enough info about the subject to establish the notability.

Unitedroad 11:07, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The speedy deletion tag was removed five minutes after you posted your comment. Any registered user can remove speedy deletion tags, except the user who started the article. MER-C 09:52, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wow

Nearly 4000 edits in just over a month. Fantastic work, I took a look at your contributons to see if you would be a suitible admin candidate, but having only been here for a bit over amonth you will not have a hope in hell - most AfD voters want 5-6. Great Gransden

Hi. You reverted back an entry on the subject of "Great Gransden". The passages that you reisnstated are clearly attempts at jokes made by one or more contributors. Please read through these and check! I understand the importance of ant vandalism, but me deleting these ridiculous paragraphs was not vandelism. There was nothing true there, it was all clearly schoolboy humour. I will update the page with correct info on the village shortly, but my edits removing the joke info were valid.

Many thanks :-)-- Chill doubt 11:44, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

A1 and A3 speedies

Please don't add these speedy deletion templates one minute after an article's creation, it is a violation of WP:BITE and WP:AGF. Please review Special:Newpages from the bottom except in the case of WP:CSD#A6 attack pages. Thank you, Kusma (討論) 11:43, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, that isn't very possible, because I use WP:VF and it only takes half a minute before the edits scroll by. I do admit that since I wrote a script to tag pages for speedy deletion with one click that I am more inclined to tag than to take other measures. I feel that such tagging actually gives the n00bs a prod (no pun intended) in the right direction because they tend to get fixed up quickly. I might add a deletion warning facility to my script to warn n00bs of impending speedy deletions. MER-C 12:52, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That seems like an argument to fix WP:VF so new pages can be reviewed by a slighlty more friendly procedure. It must suck if you do a partial save of your first article (just having tried to read Wikipedia's complicated documentation) and receive a very unfriendly deletion tag in response instead of a nice message on your talk page that asks you to please expand the article (followed by a speedy deletion nomination an hour later). Of course I don't have any statistics how many newbies do get scared away by speedy tags and how many actually improve the article in response. Anyway, just try to keep this in mind and make your use of the tools (or the tools themselves) a bit more newbie-friendly if you can (I hope that is possible without damaging your great efficiency as a vandal-fighter, which I appreciate). Happy editing, Kusma (討論) 12:59, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Blu/Jew Aardvark sockpuppets

Hi MER-C, just to CC what I posted to Wikipedia:Requests for checkuser/Case/Jew Aardvark:

I'm not a clerk or checkuser, but some of these usernames are so obviously sockpuppets (or impersonators) that they don't require the intensive checkuser search. Simply report them as obvious sockpuppets or impersonators (or bad usernames) to get them indef blocked. Let's not waste Mackensen's valuable time with these obvious cases, shall we? --Deathphoenix ʕ 14:31, 17 August 2006 (UTC) Oh, and as a postscript, all these usernames are blocked. I think it's best to report these names elsewhere, such as Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets or WP:ANI. --Deathphoenix ʕ 14:33, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Basically, a checkuser isn't required to block the obvious usernames. Checkuser takes up a lot of time and effort. These usernames are so obvious that they don't require any checkuser to be done on them before being indefinitely blocked. If you see future names like this, I suggest you post to Wikipedia:Suspected sock puppets or WP:ANI (the latter will probably get you a quicker response). Cheers, Deathphoenix ʕ 14:36, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You can ignore what I just wrote. Mackensen himself finds it useful, as stated below:

  • Comment. Actually, this is useful, because many of these come from open proxies, which I can then identify and block. Mackensen (talk) 14:50, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
    • Ah, okay, then perhaps I should retract my statement. I was concerned about RFCU time, but if you have no complaints, then neither shall I. :-) --Deathphoenix ʕ 14:57, 17 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, that's why I do it. I realise that this vandal is an open proxy farm and I think upwards of ten open proxies have been blocked because of it. In fact, I am listing yesterday's catch of 24(!) sockpuppets right now. MER-C 09:55, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
That's nice. Jew Aardvark is actually doing us a favour. Plus the names are quite hilarious. :-) --Deathphoenix ʕ 13:59, 18 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Spam != CSD

Try as we might, blatant spamming is not one of the WP:CSD (although I would completely support it). Just figured I would tell you. alphaChimp laudare 12:18, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's a current proposal which would formally allow such spam to be shot on sight, so if you want to voice your opinion, go ahead. I feel that WP:IAR applies when it comes to deleting blatant spam and the only way to get a speedy deletion is to well, um, tag it for speedy deletion. MER-C 13:08, 20 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Find the userpage of an oversight. On the left (under "what links here" and "related changes") there is most likely to be a link that says "email this user" (and it does what it says). It's independant of your email address, however I haven't tried it. MER-C 08:37, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

DEFCON

Coming to help - noticed the defcon level. ViridaeTalk 13:41, 21 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's EddieSegoura for you. What started off as a removal of a sockpuppet notice on a userpage spiralled out of control. By the time I had logged off for sleep (13:15 utc), it had mostly gone. Thanks. MER-C 09:35, 22 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MER-C, I see that you tagged the article Shimlar for speedy deletion as "non-notable website, crufty". Unfortunately those are not among the criteria for speedy deletion. Please try to avoid using the {{db}} template for proposing speedy deletion. The criteria-specific template such as {{db-bio}} are much more useful because they tell the admins the exact criteria you are using. If you cannot find a precise template that fits the article, it probably isn't speediable. Thanks, Gwernol 09:36, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Similarly, "spam" is also not one of the WP:CSD, as applied to Housingnews. It is important that you only use the specified speedy deletion criteria. Thanks, Gwernol 09:50, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, there isn't a CSD for non-notable corporations and websites, but they should be deleted for the same reason we delete articles on non-notable bands and people. Prod is too slow when it comes do dealing with blatant spam and the spammer can remove such tags legally, giving an article which should be shot on sight a lifetime upward of five days. MER-C 09:57, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
There are reasons why there are not CSDs for non-notable corporations and websites and spam. CSD is a no-appeal, sudden death process so if carefully designed to be limited. Yes, Prod is slower, but deliberately so - it gives people a chance to improve articles rather. You can always use WP:AFD if the author removes the Prod tag. I know its frustrating - I've spent plenty of hours on new pages patrol myself - but given the fact that speedy deletion does not allow time for improvement instead of deletion it needs to be used sparingly and appropriately. Thanks, Gwernol 10:02, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
It's a problem without a solution that's only going to get worse, with the amount of search engine optimisation going on. MER-C 10:36, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I saw that you tagged ArrayComm for speedy deletion. I wanted to let you know that WP:CSD:A7 does not apply to companies. In this case, I think the company is notable and that the article should be kept. TruthbringerToronto (Talk | contribs) 11:28, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Now that it meets the notifiability guidelines, I agree. MER-C 12:34, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

check it out :) - CrazyRussian talk/email 13:05, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That looks awfully familiar. It must be a coincidence! :) MER-C 13:10, 24 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
