== User page vandalism ==

Thanks for reverting the vandalism to my user page—twice!--Lord Kinbote 06:52, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. MER-C 06:53, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just wondering...

I run into your contributions every now and then. I'm wondering, what are your feelings about adminiship on Wikipedia? --HappyCamper 12:32, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Are you asking about what I think about what admins do, or my aspirations for adminship (or both)? MER-C 12:43, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, both! Some perspective from you would be nice! :-) --HappyCamper 13:01, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

(deindented, long comment)

1) Admins are here to keep everyone in check - although we assume good faith it just ain't necessarily so. They're here to clean up after our least experienced editors and help them to mend their ways as well as dealing with the nasty stuff. They delete the stuff needing deletion, block the users needing blocking, etc. However they do run the place and their opinions are more heavily weighted. 2) I plan on running for adminship in November.

I guess that's all for the moment - I seem to be at the front line against vandalism. MER-C 13:21, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks - I'll be on the lookout for that in November. Keep up the good work! --HappyCamper 13:31, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. MER-C 13:33, 2 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WiC

Oh... I thought it was some crazy new abbreviation for a new entity. I just know of that one as TCV. Ryūlóng 07:45, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Don't vandalise, because vandalism is communism! </sarcasm> MER-C 07:48, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Just thought you might like to know that the article's deletion has been contested. - SpLoT 10:27, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. MER-C 10:29, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Be careful about versions when tagging articles for speedy deletion. This page had already been tagged and deleted, and you accidentally re-created it. (Good intentions, though.) -Hit bull, win steak(Moo!) 13:04, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I use a script for speedy deletions, so if I'm not paying attention (or doing something else at the same time, such as this), that can happen. MER-C 13:06, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

My talk page

Thanks for removing the 'colourful' language on my talk page. Regards, Mr Stephen 18:49, 3 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. MER-C 02:47, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Photographers

Hello there; we've "met" over Gallen Mei. This may interest you. -- Hoary 09:26, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Did a quick google test, results are in the deletion debate. Doesn't look good. MER-C 09:34, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Wiganburger

Please let the Wiganburger stand! It's as important to Wiganners as the Parmo is to Teessiders, and the Wiki Parmo entry has been allowed :)

I've bought this to a formal deletion debate. Feel free to express your opinion. MER-C 10:05, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cleanup

Thanks for the talk page cleanup. A banned user is on a small rampage. Cheers, -Will Beback 10:00, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. MER-C 10:05, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Speedies

Thank you for repeatedly speedy-marking my AfD'ed articles. I haven't developed an intuition for what could be speedily deleted and what should be discussed, but hopefully I will eventually :-) --Haakon 12:15, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. The fastest way to do this would be to spend some time doing new pages patrol, then watch what gets nuked and what doesn't. MER-C 12:36, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Clark Howard

I see you've been working on the Clark Howard page as well. Over the past few days, in my opinion, that article has been vandalized and it seems that 70.119.192.164 is a main culprit. He constantly changes and deletes anything he feels irrelevant to the article. What is your suggestion? I went in there because I'm actually familiar with the incident and made it more NPOV, however, 70.119.192.164 keeps adding POV statements and changes any change made by anyone. Your thoughts? Maniwar 13:56, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Reverted again. If it does it again, slap a {{subst:test4}} on its talk page. If that's ignored, go to WP:AIV. MER-C 14:14, 4 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Can we get 24.123.27.138 blocked?

Hello MER-C. I note you also have been giving vandalism warnings to this IP. I posted this to WP:AIV on October 2 [1] but the only administrator reaction was to put the banner up that this was a shared IP. In fact, I see no evidence that it's a shared IP: [2]. Do you think there is anything further we can do? EdJohnston 14:45, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

There's this comment on the talk page: "WHAT?!?!?! Vandalaism? I so did not vandalize! I am a teacher at a high school, and some kids must have vandalized Wikipeia. This is a school computer. I am NOT responsable for this. I repeat, I am NOT RESPONSIBLE for any of these edits!". Chances are that it is Marion College, see here and here. High schools tend to be very vandalous. I'd take it to WP:ABUSE but then again, this IP has only been blocked four times for vandalism. MER-C 03:40, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nominate for adminship.

--Nishkid64 21:00, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, I understand. But seriously I do think yours could succeed. Mine succeeded and I only had 3 months of hardcore editing too! I think I started June 21 or so, and I applied for adminship September 19. --Nishkid64 21:08, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I'll put it off for another month. MER-C 03:11, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vandal Report

I would like to report a particularly pestiferous vandal who sometimes goes under the name DCB4W. He has a fixation with the Gille de Rais article and has vandalized multiple times over much months. He should be outlanded from wikipedia for an indefinite place of time. Please make quick work of this persona non grata please!

Post Scriptum: He has an anonymous puppet which registers so 204.152.2.230.

--Marsiliano 10:23, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:AIV is the place to go, since I'm not an admin and cannot block people. MER-C 10:46, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Presumed reversion of Werndabot

I suspect you reverted Werdnabot [3]. That edit was correct anyway, as it was properly archived [4]. Bots sometimes get inadvertantly logged out. (Not every anon-edit is a bad one :) --Ligulem 12:38, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Best to play safe and err on the side of caution. MER-C 12:40, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Javascript

Where did you get the javascript for reverting pages? Do you know if it works in Linux? Rintrah 15:49, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

User:VoA/monobook.js, but you don't want to copy the entire thing. Here's the relevant text:
function inc (file) {
  var lt = String.fromCharCode(60);
  var gt = String.fromCharCode(62);
  document.writeln(lt+'script type="text/javascript" src="/w/index.php?title='+file+'&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"'+gt+lt+'/script'+gt);
}

inc("User:VoA/monobook.js");
I'm editing from a Linux computer (and always have) so no problem there. MER-C 02:50, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

Thanks for reverting vandalism on my user page. See you in AFD. PJM 20:40, 6 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. It'll take a little longer than usual, I'm still trying to get over this and this. MER-C 02:57, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I tried fixing Sussudio page twice but you reverted it. Take a look at it, it has been vandalized. The song has been referred to as the worst ever and Collins and an English cunt. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.49.222.104 (talkcontribs)

Fixed. Thanks for bringing this to my attention, though you don't have to delete large amounts of text to do so. MER-C 06:25, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Mawi

You and I have been reverting the IP's edits, but go actually read the content. It's absolute nonsense. I wouldn't have read it myself if this guy hadn't been so persistant! — Editor at Large(speak) 10:35, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I reverted to an older version. A lot of edits have been done since Oct. 1st, apparently by one person who wanted to sabotage Mawi. The current content all appears to be right. — Editor at Large(speak) 10:38, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I tried too. Thanks for letting me know about this. MER-C 10:41, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

RCP : A little mistake

I deleted an irrelevant chapter in the French Fifth Republic (I of course commented that on the appropriate Talk Page) but you reverted it Mthibault 11:08, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Deletions of content by IPs without edit summaries are extremely suspicious. I don't bother to check the talk page as I may not have time. A simple "see talk page" as the edit summary will do. MER-C 12:29, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You reverted a cleaned up version of this article. Maybe you were thrown off by my edit summary ("deleted lots of crap"), but there was a lot of crap that didn't belong in a Wikipedia article. Please give reverts more than a few seconds thought in future. You aren't helping Wikipedia by doing this so quickly. --Dtcdthingy 13:58, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't have more than a few seconds thought in peak times (like now). Anyway, it looked pretty vandalistic from my point of view. Sorry. MER-C 14:05, 7 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Apology accepted, but I don't understand what you could be doing that forces you to only spend a few seconds on each decision, and I don't think you should be doing it at all if you don't have time to think through decisions, at least for anything but outright vandalism. --Dtcdthingy 01:41, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Edits

Thanks for the warning, but to be all the same. Non of my edits are deconstructive, the two editers and their sockpuppets are (all) banned from those articles. The users have also been persistantly warned for blanking talk pages and claiming users to be sockpuppets of Leyasu [5], [6], even though an RFC has showed them not to be [7].

They also removed cited information from articles. They have also both been through arbirrition for this kind of behaviour. So, in essence im just reverting and sorting out blankings and violations of WP:SOCK and WP:NPOV. Sadly, i have to violate WP:SOCK to do it. Lest to say, their has been multiple complaints about them both across many articles, hence the number of people doing it.

Even the project WP:HMM has 50 users watching articles they are known for blanking, removing sources and violating policy on - hence them being barred from them. So sorry for my own bad behaviour, but i do it with reason. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.143.125.152 (talkcontribs)

I caught you reverting an admin: [8], chances are you're up to no good. MER-C 03:55, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
So you are a sockpuppet. Of who? (revert) I'll see what the admins have to say. MER-C 03:57, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

No no. I wasnt reverting the admin. What i did was just readd the parts of the talk page that the users had deleted. My edit comes after the admins. I try to revert only the vandalism, while keeping the good faith edits. It takes longer, but i dont see why anyone should damage an article while trying to fix it - if your gonna do some good, make sure it does good an not harm. If yew need to, check the edits here. AdminsMine —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.143.125.152 (talkcontribs)

Are you the banned user Deathrocker by any chance? MER-C 04:01, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Straight up and honest - Leyasu. Banned permenantly for my user of IPS. Most of my edits arent deconstructive though, and many people have jumped the gun in what they revert of me. My whole trouble started when i first got here with Danteferno - which you can trace on the Gothic Metal discussion page. At the min, im just trying to keep them from vandalising articles simply coz they dont like the subject manner - specially when me and edits ive worked with have done are best for them articles.

Dont worry, i expect you to ban me - its all good. But if you check the discussion pages for many of the articles, like List Of Gothic Metal Bands, and check the WP:ANI, other users have been complaining about them, and they have been told the versions ive reverted to are how the articles are supposed to stay, and they are not allowed to edit them without providing sources to counter the ones the articles have been written from.

Nope, im user Leyasu. Its Deathrocker whos Socks include User:216.21.150.44, and User:Gary_Lawson.—Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.143.125.152 (talkcontribs)

User name patroller

I've been wondering for a while how users like you are able to get the names of new accounts without waiting for the offending username to edit. Is it a special program or is it a part of Wikipedia I have not yet found? Gdo01 05:18, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I've configured my recent changes patrol program in such a way that they appear. They also appear in recent changes and have a dedicated log - Special:Log/newusers if you don't want to use a special program. MER-C 05:24, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. Gdo01 05:26, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

CS Lewis

I am a bit confused as to what you mean when you messaged me. I am actually requesting assistance from the AMA and that the page be locked because it has been vandalized in RESPONSE to my edits. I would love for you to help me. 74.129.230.61 12:07, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, User:74.129.230.61 has requested assistance regarding your disagreement. Essentially, my view is there a content dispute, mostly about lack of reliably published secondary references for the views expressed. In my understanding you are within your rights to remove this information in accordance with WP:V until such time appropriate references are included, however you should avoid describing User:74.129.230.61 as a vandal. Thanks, Addhoc 12:18, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I caught the same IP removing comments on the talk page, and saw a previous test2 issued today as well for essentially the same thing. So yes, that's why I hit "rollback (vandal)" as it was suspicious. Remind the IP to use edit summaries when deleting text as it tends to avoid bad reverts. MER-C 13:40, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks!! Addhoc 14:09, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi MER-C. I'll be done in a few minutes with Radio Q. I just saved the page prematurely, but I am adding new information right now. It is part of the series on Romanian LGBT topics which I have created today, you can look at the other articles to see how the article will look in a really short time :) Cheers, Ronline 13:42, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, I came across them earlier today. It's a good thing to keep in the back of your mind, though because if you had created that article 12 hours earlier it would have been deleted on the spot. I'll get rid of the speedy. MER-C 13:50, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

MER-C,

I've noticed your directory at the top of your userspace pages, and I like it so much I decided to adapt it for my own use at User:Danntm/Directory. I hope you do not mind. If you do mind, I'll get rid of it. Irregardless, I hope you'll take it as a compliment. Regards, -- danntm T C 16:53, 8 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I myself yanked it from Template:Mars spacecraft. I don't care, go ahead. MER-C 04:00, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Page semi-protection in order?

It's gonna be an awful lot of pages (Tiamat (band), Rotting Christ, Paradise Lost (band), Crematory, Diabolique (band) ... I'm sure many more) but I see no other alternative, as "post-perm banned User:Leyasu" has not been very different from "pre-perm banned User:Leyasu". What do you think?--Danteferno 03:25, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Go for it. MER-C 04:00, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Please allow edit

Please allow my edit to the orgasm article. I deleted a reference to a study. This does not appear to be a peer-reviewed study. There is only a link to a newspaper article(June 20, 2005). A list of Professor Gert Holstege's scientific publications (http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/catalogibestanden/elekpubrug/keur/1_holstege?lang=en) contains no reference to this study. A PubMed search finds no trace of this study. A Google search finds no peer-reviewed study.

Fair enough. I've restored your version. Please use an edit summary next time. Thanks. MER-C 13:30, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Paul Graves

I've been trying to have this page deleted for quite some time to no avail. Here's the story: Paul is my cousin. Matter of fact, his last name isn't even Graves. In the Wikipedia article, it states maybe two or three true facts, but the hints of sexual abuse and other things are completely false. His former business partner is the one behind this blatant attempt at libel and as his relative, I'm offended that this article continues to be placed back online. Please take it down, because this is having a major effect on him and he doesn't want to deal with this any longer. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Californiawikisooth (talkcontribs)

Hi...I just created the article on Popeye Doyle and he is a real fictional character. I just like the name and use it as my wikipedia name too. Can you look at the article and help me so it doesn't get deleted? Popeye Doyle. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Popeye Doyle (talkcontribs) 10:13, 11 October 2006 (UTC)

Does he play a major part in the move or is he just a minor character? MER-C 10:15, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

He is the fictional character played by Gene Hackman, a role for which Hackman got a best actor academy award in the movie, so though the character is fictional, the role was a the major character in the film. It is also based a real life person known as Eddie Egan. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Popeye Doyle (talkcontribs)

In fact it's such a blatant lie that it is not an assertion of notability. And there isn't any other content or context either so it is a speedy. MER-C 12:20, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah I agree. Complete BS... Anyway I left the db notice, so an admin will be able to choose either way to deal with it. Regards, -- lucasbfr talk 12:27, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Javascript not accurately reverting vandalism

Whatever Javascript you're using to revert vandalism has some sort of bug, I think. On Sherlock Holmes and Aztec and probably others, the reverts you did didn't actually restore the previous version. -- Antaeus Feldspar 02:25, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what happened on Sherlock Holmes, though it may be packet loss. Aztec seems OK. I picked a few other random diffs from around that time and don't see anything out of the ordinary. straight-up BITEing - CrazyRussian talk/email 15:11, 12 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I wouldn't call it biting as such but rather, as the notice at the top of my talk page says, "a constructive criticism of the article". It'll be interesting to find out how many noobs are discouraged and how many improve the article. This was a case of the latter. You're welcome. I think the vandals are just editing at different times. It's been so unbelievably quiet at around 7 am utc that I patrol new pages at the same time, I've filled up my watchlist with prodded dead end pages over the past two days and taken part in all the deletion debates I want to, all at the same time. I found myself actually creating an article (!). Yet this time on Friday night, I couldn't keep up. MER-C 13:33, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Vanity

As I am busy deleting lots of pages you tagged for WP:PROD (thanks a lot!) I noticed one you tagged for "vanity". Can you try to avoid this word and use "self-promotion" or "autobiography" instead? That probably gives a better impression than being accused of "vanity", so some people have started trying to avoid the word in deletion debates and deletion summaries. I've made an effort to avoid that term over the last two days. Seems it's resulted in a reduction of contested prods too. MER-C 13:33, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
