Messages from Students (Fall 2011)

Just wanted to remind you to check out mysandbox and see if you are good with the topic. Dsylve44 (talk) 01:17, 19 October 2011 (UTC)Dsylve44Dsylve44 (talk) 01:17, 19 October 2011 (UTC)

Mitch,

For the extra credit do we have to go to both of the events in October and along with that do a paper on the event???````Mueller86````

No Each extra credit opportunity is a separate thing. --MTHarden (talk) 12:47, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Week 1

Mitch, are we to do Week two section 3.2 for this week?? 19:17, 29 August 2011 (UTC)(Mueller86)Mueller86 19:17, 29 August 2011 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mueller86 (talkcontribs)

No... Well I guess. The Week 1 Assignment will be graded this Sunday (4 September), the Week 2 Assignment (which I suppose you ought be doing now) will be graded on Sunday September 11th. Make sense? --MTHarden (talk) 19:24, 29 August 2011 (UTC)

Mitch, I just wanted to see if "Responsible Christian Counseling" by George G. Konrad was an article. You can find it on this site. http://www.directionjournal.org/article/?266 Thank you --CreativecookEr (talk) 20:12, 28 September 2011 (UTC)

Week 2

I finished my quiz, with a 9/10 (which isnt great, but I didn't want to re-attempt my quiz because of time limits) I finished my the Wikipedia Week 2 Assignments, BUT I wasn't sure how to deliver the assignments to Turnitin. If you have not noticed yet, I am not tech savvy - but would like to make sure I fix this so I don't miss out on any more extra credit points! Jillian.Hind (talk) 04:00, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

It does look like you did it right. You don't really have to include other class assignments like quizzes or extra credit or whatever. You even signed your comment, good job! I would say I would prefer if things were linked, and I think you should've used a level 2 heading on your calssmates talk page, but that's just minor formatting stuff. I'll fix it for you, so that you (and everyone) can see. --MTHarden (talk) 19:19, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Mitch, I don't know if I did any of this wiki stuff correct and I have no idea about the Turnitin thing was I supposed to do that for the quiz? I think I'm going to have to meet with you after class or something because I really don't want to fail this class just because I don't get the wiki assignments correctly. Thanks so much. Stabers (talk) 01:30, 12 September 2011 (UTC) Sandie Tabers

I don't want you to fail either. --MTHarden (talk) 03:07, 12 September 2011 (UTC)

Week 3

Hey Mr.Harden, I have been browsing through stub class articles to see of any that I'm interested in, I've found a few, but I'm a bit confused. Some of the articles I've been interested in already have posts by previous students of yours who have had ideas on how to improve them. Does this mean the article has already been improved elsewhere? Or does it just mean the student didn't ever do it and what I see is the actual article? Please and thank you for the help! --danielle*rose (talk) 03:25, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Well it depends. There are many reasons a studnet might've touched an article that is still a stub class. Maybe the article wasn't improved enough, or a student critiqued it but ended up working on something else. In any event treat it just like any other Wikipedia article, if you think you can improve it (aim for a 5x expansion), and there are enough good sources out there that make you think it could be a good topic, then it is probably still fine. --MTHarden (talk) 13:34, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Mitch I sent you am e-mail but not sure if it went so I'm sending you a request on here. so if its ok with you I would like to come talk to you about this wikipedia stuff on thursday or friday around 11am please let me know which is better for you. thanksStabers (talk) 00:20, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Either is fine.--MTHarden (talk) 00:22, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Mitch change of my plans sorry but I will have to come on friday at 10:30. Thanks so much Stabers (talk) 00:53, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Five articles I'm interested in

1. Anxiety threshold 2. Bipolar NOS 3. Racing thoughts 4. Range anxiety 5. State-Trait Anxiety Inventory — Preceding unsigned comment added by Tutterrow1992 (talkcontribs) 21:07, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

  • That's nice, but really you should put that on your user page. --MTHarden (talk) 21:23, 15 September 2011 (UTC)

Mitch. I'm finally in line with the rest of the ducks in class, and have week one and two done but not three. I know it's due tonight, and I've been trying to figure it out since I got home and I'm just not sure what I'm doing. Olivia Miss Hurricane 2011 (talk) 02:48, 18 September 2011 (UTC)

Mr. Harden, I am struggling with the week 3 assignments i have just completed week 2 and realized i was a week behind. I am in your phy 101-02 class M$W i was wondering when would be a good time to come speak to you. your class is the last class i take. I was hoping to come see you sooner but I had to go straight to work after class on Monday. thank you (Em153328 (talk) 01:56, 21 September 2011 (UTC))

Ab my wikipedia assignment.....

You said that I didnt leave a link to my page but I thought I did so idk what went wrong???? Did youtake off points for that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jennifer dunbar (talkcontribs) 02:02, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

You were supposed to leave a critique on a talk page somewhere, that is the thing that I didn't see linked anywhere. I checked the two links you had to articles you were interested in and didn't find your critique there either. In a last-ditch effort I checked your contributions and saw that you had left a critique on the Black-dog bias talk page. --MTHarden (talk) 02:13, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Week 4&5

Hey Mr. Harden! I have week 3 and week 4-5 done. I was wondering if you could check my week 4 contribution to make sure I have the right source and my sentences are okay to use. Thanks! --Annmohh (talk) 00:08, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Oh good. Well I took a glance at your Week 4&5 and I's like to point you to WP:BLPSPS, which suggests that using Whitfield's own website as a source of information about Whitfield is technically ok, but discouraged. Also two of the books you listed are already listed earlier in the article as well as in the bibliography section. I think the easiest way to improve this to A quality work, would be to instead use a secondary source to cite a fact about one of those books. Which was the most popular? The most influential? --MTHarden (talk) 01:27, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

I was ondering if u could check my page and see if i completed week four and five assignment correctly Ncathey17 (talk) 18:58, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

Ok, so remember you can't just use "some website" as a source. Try a journal article, or a magazine or newspaper. Secondly there were a bunch of spelling and grammar errors there so I wasn't sure exactly what you were trying to say. The trouble with all the articles on specific phobias is trying to add information that is distinct from the information on Phobia. Why don't you try to do this assignment on Trichophagia you'll notice there are 4 references at the end of the article that have not yet been included int he article. So perhaps you can find one of those, read it, and add some new information. --MTHarden (talk) 04:37, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

I Did the two sentences and I need to know if I cited right. Can you help me please? --Karina Quintanar (talk) 21:41, 29 September 2011 (UTC)

I responded in the article talk --MTHarden (talk) 04:41, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

I revised it, but I still do not think i'm doing it right.--Karina Quintanar (talk) 15:56, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

You're right, it still has problems. I commented more at the talk page. Again, my suggestion is to try to take a bigger piecce of information and summarize it in your own words. Don't just re-write a statement the authors of your source made. --MTHarden (talk) 21:02, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

I added a sentence to the article Pervasive refusal syndrome but I'm not sure if I did it right. Could you check and get back to me? Thanks.--Beebee's wingman (talk) 19:33, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Your problems are three fold:
  1. The date did not import from DOI and needs to be entered manually.
  2. There are several typos in your edit.
  3. The biggest problem what you wrote: "As to what causes PRS is unclear at the moment but it seems to be associated with a sense of hoplessness" is a WP:CLOSEPARAPHRASE of this sentence from the articles abstract: "The causes are unclear, but likely to be complex, multiple and associated with a sense of hopelessness." AND that information is already in the article in this later clause: "PRS may be linked to learned helplessness"
my suggestion would be to read the article (not just the abstract) and then try to pick a more substantial bit of information, and summarize it down into a sentence. Let me know when you have that done, and then I'll grade your work. --MTHarden (talk) 20:56, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Help! I did week 4 and 5's assignments, but... when I cited my sentences, I inserted the web cite and filled in the information, but for some reason I cant find it on the article page now? It has the little [1] at the end but my citation information is no where to be found? not sure what I did wrong ): danielle*rose (talk) 18:04, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

I'll help you. I'm not affiliated with the course... hopefully this isn't unethical or anything. Please let me know if it is!
The error text at the bottom of the page describes the problem. This is how to fix it. Melchoir (talk) 18:12, 2 October 2011 (UTC)

Hello! It's Sandra Sanchez. I'm barely getting the hang of this wikipedia stuff. Will you please look at my previous assignments and let me know if they are correct? I'm sorry they were done late. Can I still get partial credit? Thank you for your help. Sanwish (talk) 18:05, 4 October 2011 (UTC)

about my critique and about the assignment that was do today.......

Mr. Harden, Ok so I really dont understand this wikipedia stuff AT ALL!! So according to your last post yo did find my critique under my contributions...but what did i do wronge? And the assignment that was due tonight Jen had to walk me through EVERY STEP because I had NO IDEA how to do that either so I hope that was done right????? I was really confused with the siteing part=( — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jennifer dunbar (talkcontribs) 01:56, 3 October 2011 (UTC)

You are right that you didn't do it quite right. But if you've been back to check then you've seen that several other Wikipedians swooped down and fixed some of the problems. When you don't understand things, you might consider coming by during office hours for help. Also I'd point you to the support chatroom or the online ambassadors for good wikipedia help. --MTHarden (talk) 13:57, 5 October 2011 (UTC)

I didn't post here earlier, but it looks fine at first glance. --MTHarden (talk) 13:02, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

I revised week 4 and 5. would you mind checking it again for me and let me know if it is better. thanks--Beebee's wingman (talk) 14:09, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

The date is wrong on your citation. --MTHarden (talk) 13:02, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

I am having trouble with assignments articles that I picked in particular. Can't seem to find topic that would be good to expand on..Please help.--Dbarber1 (talk) 00:35, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

There are 1,0000's of articles to choose from. You are welcome to choose different ones than you already have. The assignment to pick some articles was from over a month ago (Week 3). Don't pick a journal, or anything that ends in phobia or NOS. --MTHarden (talk) 13:02, 18 October 2011 (UTC)

Week 6

Okay so I edited the second person below me, but the person thats directly under me is who I'm having some trouble with because I don't know how to get to any of her sources. So if you could let me know how I can go about looking at her sources, or just let me know if I should just skip her and do the next person below me. Thanks! (Shannon Rallo (talk) 16:09, 3 October 2011 (UTC))

Mr. Harden, help! I was looking back on what I need to do for week 6 and it said there should be some feed back from you. But I didn't see anything. All my stuff is on my page under the discussion tab, if that helps. Just let me know if I'm doing anything right. Thanks!! Ml174339 (talk) 20:49, 7 October 2011 (UTC)

The sentence added from last week is missing and it looks like someone was already trying to edit that page for the Wiki project? I am confused and don't really know what to do now...please help me... Thanks! Ewoodruff13 (talk) 16:49, 9 October 2011 (UTC)

I need help please. Can you please look over the peer check I did for Nrs53. The link is Orientation (mental) under causes of mental disorientation--Karina Quintanar (talk) 16:08, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

I am having a lot of trouble with the week 6 assignment. can I stop by during your office hours on Monday and have you help me with it? Thanks.--Beebee's wingman (talk) 19:00, 8 October 2011 (UTC)

Mitch I think I may have figured this week out but not too sure if I did it right I guess time will tell I know it's a little late but at least I got it done! Have fun with trying to make sense of what I am hoping makes sense...Stabers (talk) 03:42, 11 October 2011 (UTC)

Well...

I have been back to check, but as I said I dont understand this stuff at all so I dont even know what exactly was done to it=( I dont know I guess I just feel like we are spending way to much time trying to learn how to work Wikipedia and Im so pressed for time that Im not left with much time to read/learn my actual phychology that Im suppose to be learning. And because of this Im fairly sure that I failed my midterm last week............................. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jennifer dunbar (talkcontribs) 01:17, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Class project

Hi, I do not want to digress here (pun intended) but regarding the Talk:Tangential speech class assignment, how does one get that kind of thing started? I had hoped for that on Talk:Message_passing, but I no longer walk down academic corridors. Any idea how that might happen? Thanks? History2007 (talk) 21:10, 24 October 2011 (UTC)

I guess I'm not entirely sure what you are asking me, but if you wnated to know how I got started with the WAP then I started here: Wikipedia:USEDU --MTHarden (talk) 21:18, 24 October 2011 (UTC)
