Delete templates[edit]

The reason for the wording is because I've proposed moving the function of deletebecause over to Template:Delete, since that template is so rarely used. I'd make the change myself, but that template is protected. My wording makes sense in that context. See Template talk:Delete#Combining Deletebecause/db function here. Also, new users may not understand what the {{1}}, if carelessly left blank, refers to. A couple words help here. I'm going to revert for the time being. -- Netoholic @ 7 July 2005 13:55 (UTC)

Hello MacGyverMagic![edit]

I hope you've been well. I took a quick peek to see what was happening with that awful Armenian Genocide page, and things have gone from bad to worse. I was reminded of BM's message early on: "I don't think Fadix appreciates how unlikely it is that Wikipedia will declare his point of view to be the only one legitimate enough to be reflected in the article. That isn't how Wikipedia works."

For all intents and purposes Wikipedia's checks and balances have failed, and a master propagandist has won. All he had to do was chatter endlessly and drown everyone out. Gaining allies (who have a "bee in their bonnet," according to an unofficial mediator) made his job much easier.

Since this person has so far succeeded in erecting his personal "Armenian Genocide" Monument on Wikipedia, I have a request. You had made the decision to put his drivel on his own special "Fadix Analysis" page. That has become insult to injury... underlining the fact that he has steamrollered his way in with his claims and photos with little or no legitimate sources. Since his huge mouth has helped produced a mini-encyclopedia of archives, this "Fadix Analysis" should be incorporated into one of the pages of Archives 1. And it should be one of the earlier pages in these archives, which is where it chronologically belongs -- and not a special page anymore. Having "Fadix Analysis" as a separate page now accentuates how successfully this ethically-challenged zealot has become the master of this area, and the situation is sad enough without such extra-accentuation. Thanks. --Torque July 10, 2005

Template locations[edit]

I have noticed you discussed template locations at Wikipedia talk:template messages.

One user has unilaterally been moving templates from articles to talk pages en-masse (over 100 articles are affected during a spate made by the user last night). I have spent some time trying to resolve this issue.

There is now a poll discussing where templates belong created at Wikipedia:Template locations, and a discussion at Template talk:Expansion. ~~~~ 14:03, 10 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Marquees[edit]

Thanks for answering my question about marquees at the help desk! Anyways, I just thought it would be a cool thing for my user page to have scrolling text or even scrolling images. Oh well, thanks anyways. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 01:30, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the information. I've got another idea for my user page and I'm in the process of revamping it. Flcelloguy | A note? | Desk 19:10, 15 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Oh shit, I was writing a stub for Taboo (musical) when I noticed an edit conflict with a shorter stub. I just overwrote, but I guess this must have been the moved Taboo (album) stub. I was at the same time engaged in rewriting that in another browser tab. I started Taboo (disambiguation) this morning. I think I'll split them out again because they're actually rather distinct entities. There were really two musicals, one with a crappy book that did very well despite that on the West End and on tour in the UK, and another with a completely new book by Charles Busch and flopped horribly on Broadway despite that. I'm yet to start on the album write-up but it'll have to give cast details for the album and will link to different reviews. Reviewers of this album remarked that it presented the music in quite a different light.

I'll handle this, I'll sort out what's missing from where and put it all where it should be. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 12:55, 11 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal 7[edit]

Hello my friend,

I saw on one hand that you said you believe that Link is encyclopedic because he "is the protagonist of a Nintendo games series," but you then vote in support for the proposal that would have him deleted. I am confused by this. Those two things read as you believe he belongs in an encyclopedia, but you approve a measure that could have him deleted. Personally, i believe that fan-made characters for people's everquest and dungeon and dragons games, do not have a place on this site, but at the same time, to me, this proposal reads to me that industry created characters, like the overstated Link or Cloud Strife clould easily be deleted by an admin that has no knowledge of the character. That is why unless, unless the wording is made less vague, i am opposing this proposal. --ZeWrestler 12:34, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Informing DYK authors[edit]

Hi, MacGyverMagic, thanks for all the work you do on WP:DYK. I love seeing the new articles Wikipedia is producing. I was wondering though why you removed the "Older articles" section whose authors hadn't been informed. From your edit summary it appears to be intentional. Did you feel that too much time had passed and that it wasn't worth informing people any more, or perhaps that if no one was going to inform them, that you might as well remove the entries? — Knowledge Seeker 23:30, 12 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • Makes sense. Thanks for explaining. I went ahead and left them messages. — Knowledge Seeker 08:08, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wazzup?[edit]

Any article Ican assist you in writing. I want to contribute tho the egypt ritual article I aquired some more info, not my field but oh well. Only problem is I can't remember the articles title. :) --Cool Cat My Talk 13:19, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Commons protection[edit]

Hi MGM. Are you Commons:User:131.211.210.15? I bet it would have been nearly as easy to upload Commons:Image:ICC-cricket-member-nations.png locally to Image:ICC-cricket-member-nations.png, and it would have gotten the image protected 5 hours earlier. Tv characters in wheelchairs[edit]

Thanks very much for your reply to my query at WP:RD. I am grateful. Haven't communicated with you lately. How are you doing? PedanticallySpeaking 17:16, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for your note. I had Jason Ritter in my original question, along with Raymond Burr and Sarah Rue, but it can't hurt to make certain all the bases are covered. PedanticallySpeaking 17:33, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

Egypt[edit]

Wasn't that article you were looking for titled Egyptian burial rituals and protocol? Anyway, you can drop info my way by email. I can't promise, I'll write anything on the short term, but I'll make sure it gets passed to the right people if you can't write it yourself. - Mgm|(talk) 17:35, July 13, 2005 (UTC)

No I will write it myself. Just not this week. :) --Cool Cat My Talk 17:43, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Current DYK[edit]

Why is the Did You Know identical to the Pic of the Day? I've got WP:DYK on my watchlist, and in the last 10 minutes there's been a flurry of edits that have just forgotten the Did You Know format and gone and copied the Featured Pic. What's up!?! Harro5 06:28, July 16, 2005 (UTC)

  • Would it really be so terrible to change the main page twice a week? My point is that it should be labelled 'Today's featured picture' because that's what it is, and the title draws attention to the picture that isn't there with the DYK factoid format.--Pharos 08:07, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

POTD selection[edit]

Hi Mgm,

Following on from Talk:Main Page - You can see the up comming POTD selections at Wikipedia:Picture_of_the_day/July_2005. Tomorrows POTD is Image:Canyon de Chelly, Navajo.jpg which will be fine.

At the moment, we are averaging around 5 new FPs a week. If we got up to >7 new FPs a week I might be able to just feature new promotions, but as it is I alternate daily between recently promoted and older FPs. Also images are featured in the order in which they are promoted.

Putting POTD on the main page at weekends is going to require some modifications in the procedure. I'll probably try to ensure that there are two recent FPs selected for the weekends, and I'm also likely to face problems with people wanting to ensure that their picture gets selected for a day when POTD will be on the main page. I may have to move over to autocratic selection as is done with Featured Articles. -- Solipsist 09:20, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

  • I don't think that having POTDs on weekends on the main page is a good idea for Wikipedia; this should be done on the Commons. Afterall, wikipedia is an encyclopedia and the Commons is a media file repository -- it only makes sense that the former prominantly display articles and that the latter show off pictures. As an active participant both on Wikipedia (English and French) and the Commons, I believe that that these projects have different missions, missions that should not be confused. And as others have noted, the DYK feature is an excellent way to encourage people to write articles and furthermore to encourage others to look over and edit new articles. --Zantastik talk 11:32, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Featured pictures on the English Wikipedia have a different emphasis to those on Commons. In particular they are featured for their role in illustrating an article on the English wiki. A good picture that doesn't illustrate an article is passed over to Commons which has no particular context. It is not just a question of encouraging photographers, Featured Pictures tends to stimulate people to go and look for images to illustrate articles, write articles to go with a good picture they have found, and translate articles from other wikis. -- Solipsist 11:53, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
Good point, Solipsist. However, even if having featured pictures on the front page stimulates productivity, I think that they should only be displayed on the weekend: if illustrations are vital, articles are even more so, and DYK also encourages the production of good content. --Zantastik talk 19:05, 16 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Could you add the Speedy deletion warning?[edit]

You seemed to support adding a speedy deletion warning to MediaWiki:Newarticletext. The consensus seems to be to add it. I've written up a suggested text for it on the talk page. Would you be willing to implement it? Thanks! JesseW 05:46, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

DYK / POTD layout[edit]

Hi MGM,

In case you hadn't noticed, I've kicked off the discussion for changing the layout of the DYK section to accomodate switching to POTD at the weekend at Talk:Main_Page#DYK_.2F_POTD_layout.

The biggest issue I can forsee with switching to daily transclusions, is that DYK, by its nature, is more timely in its updates. As it works at the moment, if nobody updates the template in the morning, yesterday's DYK continues to show, whereas with daily transcludes there is a danger that the next template might not be populated. However, the simple solution would be to copy and paste the Monday DYK in to the Tuesday template, then update Tuesday with new items when available (and so on). -- Solipsist 21:31, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Hey[edit]

Are you a administrator? I need help with two articles that needs to be protected from users who write from their point of view. Albanau 22:27, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Nope, we were discussing personal attacks, this is something els. Albanau 22:33, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

I want you to restore the article Arvanites and Arvanitic language to the last change by me, [1], [2], and protect this two articles. I gaved sources from Encyklopedia Britannica and Cambridge, Princetion and Oxford University Press that Arvanites are the descendants of settlers of Albanian ancestry of central and southern Albania that settled in various Greek lands during the Middle Ages, and the Arvanitic language is variety of Tosk Albanian. This simple facts have user:Theathenae simply ignored and have been refused to take part of any disscusion wisely, here he delated my message I send to him, [3], and here [4], [5] he have simply ignored also the facts that I gaved him and violated the 3RR rules. Q: how is possible sockpuppetry investigated?[edit]

Are user IP's somehow visible to plain users, or does it take an admin to verify sockpuppets? Thanks in advance. Chronographos 23:36, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks. I suspect sockpuppetry at Talk:Albanians and Talk:Arvanitic language based on "style of writing, field of interest in articles and POV" by signed editors. How can this be investigated? And an unrelated question, if I may: when exchanging messages on user talk pages, is it proper etiquette to answer an inquiry on the spot or to do so on the inquiring user's talk page? Clearing personal talk page[edit]

Previous message sent to me by a fellow admin.:

No, it is actually quite fine if you purge the contents of your talk page into the page history, since all of the content is readily available through that. Some user copy-and-paste archiving, and others just blank the page in order to get the content into the history. Personal preference, I suppose. Bratschetalk 5 pillars 04:35, July 17, 2005 (UTC)

Hey again[edit]

I request 24 hours ban on user:Theathenae for his violation against policy rule, he have blank his page once again, [6], and another 24 hours for violating the 3RR. He have edit the page Arvanites and Arvanitic language so many times without taking part of the discussion. And also please delate his insult against me, [7] cause I allready fell offended, if this is an personal attack I request ANOTHER 24 hours ban against him. This seam fear enough and so he can learn a lesson. Albanau 12:27, 22 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]
