Waga Tomo Hitler (my friend hitler) is a japanese stage play written and produced by well-known playwright Yukio Mishima. Published in book form October 13th,1968 and was first produced on stage the following year, and ran from January 18th to the 31st in 1969. In one of these productions, Mishima himself played Adolf Hitler. 

Mishima was inspired by the assassination of ernst roehm and was intrigued by Hitler’s political genius. However, more of his influence for Hitler’s character came from one his other plays. Since Mishima other play Sado Koshaku fujin (madame de sade) stars an all female cast, He wanted My friend Hitler to be an all male cast. According to mishima, “in the two plays, he wanted to refute criticism claiming that he could not be able to portray both genders.

Thus, unlike all prior forms of theatre mentioned, both shingeki and shimpa are styles of Japanese theatre that draw on Western influence. Shimpa is an abbreviation of shimpageki (新派劇; New School Drama). Shimpa was Japan’s next step in theatrical development, which emerged after Japan was opened to the West. Sudō Sadanori (1867-1907) is considered the originator of shimpa theatre. Shimpa was originally a protest against the conservative government.
