How we will see unregistered users

Hi!

You get this message because you are an admin on a Wikimedia wiki.

When someone edits a Wikimedia wiki without being logged in today, we show their IP address. As you may already know, we will not be able to do this in the future. This is a decision by the Wikimedia Foundation Legal department, because norms and regulations for privacy online have changed.

Instead of the IP we will show a masked identity. You as an admin will still be able to access the IP. There will also be a new user right for those who need to see the full IPs of unregistered users to fight vandalism, harassment and spam without being admins. Patrollers will also see part of the IP even without this user right. We are also working on better tools to help.

If you have not seen it before, you can read more on Meta. If you want to make sure you don’t miss technical changes on the Wikimedia wikis, you can subscribe to the weekly technical newsletter.

We have two suggested ways this identity could work. We would appreciate your feedback on which way you think would work best for you and your wiki, now and in the future. You can let us know on the talk page. You can write in your language. The suggestions were posted in October and we will decide after 17 January.

@MGA73: uploaded by User:Mr.ちゅらさん with text claiming the source is "Japanese edition" and "photography person Lusheeta" who I presume is ja:利用者:Lusheeta. I presume the admin uploaded a file somewhere and it got renamed. That's all I can see. Magog the Ogre (t • c) 19:18, 17 January 2022 (UTC)

I accidentally uploaded it to commons as "Sausage Tree in Botswana.jpg", rather than "Sausage Tree in Botswana.JPG". I did it the long way because I could not work out how to operate that bot, or how to at least give it the message that the image has been evaluated and deemed fit for upload to commons. I was cleaning up articles with broken links to upload.wikimedia.org and noticed that the oldest version of File:Plaque stonework ainslie church ACT.jpg (uploaded at 03:36, 6 September 2005) appears to have been lost when the file was moved to Commons. Shouldn't that other image then be moved to Commons under a different file name? I don't see why it being uploaded in error is relevant. The context for this is that there is a broken link to that version of the image at All Saints Church, Canberra (the first reference), which I've been trying to track down and fix. * Pppery * _{it has begun...} 03:14, 3 February 2022 (UTC)

You misunderstood me; there is a link to https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/archive/b/b1/20050906033915%21Plaque_stonework_ainslie_church_ACT.jpg on that article (added in 2006). Before you deleted the local copy of the file, that link worked, and pointed to the image in question. Now, that link is dead. I thought F8 deletions weren't allowed to cause permanently broken links. * Pppery * _{it has begun...} 23:07, 7 February 2022 (UTC)

@Pppery: deleting the local link will *always* break the direct link because direct links weren't made to work that way. The uploader should have created a second version of the image if it was meant to be used. I will restore this properly under a different name tonight when I get a chance. New administrator activity requirement

1. Made neither edits nor administrative actions for at least a 12-month period OR
2. Made fewer than 100 edits over a 60-month period

Congressional districts with county boundries

Dear Magog the Ogre,

I noticed that you've made quite a few county maps of congressional district results which inluded counties that are split, if you could direct me to the reference maps used to model those county splits I would appreciate it. Recreation of hoax draft?

Would you have a look at Draft:Movimento Independente pelos Jovens Audazes and see if it's a recreation of the stuff you deleted (for hoax reasons) back in September? It was recreated 3 days after you deleted it, by a then brand new editor (whose first edit was to claim COI for the draft, and then second edit to start a draft of the same name). Update on non-Berne templates

After the very useful discussion on Copyright notes Iraq, I made adjustments to {{PD-Iraq}}, created the new template {{Non-free no treaty}}, and then deleted Copyright notes Iraq under G7. I wonder if it is the same file as File:SJMSOM.jpg and if there is any indication that the uploads are own work (user only uploaded 6 files in total).
