Manchester City can confirm that 28-year-old Belgian striker, Emile Mpenza, is currently having a trial with the Club.
Part of Mpenza's trial saw him perform a starring role in a behind closed doors match against Blackpool yesterday, scoring the second goal in a 3-0 win. It also gave those in need of match fitness a chance to get a game under their belts with Didi Hamann and Stephen Jordan amongst them to complete 90 minutes.
City opened the scoring after 40 minutes through Daniel Sturridge. Neat play from Djamel Abdoun gave Sturridge a chance to roll the defender and drive an unstoppable right foot shot into the bottom corner from 10-yards out.
It was 2-0 after 48 minutes and a deserved goal for Emile Mpenza, who did everything but score in the first half. Didi Hamann slipped the ball through to the former Schalke man and he made no mistake with a clever dinked finish.
With 15 minutes left, City scored the best goal of the game to make it safe, as Michael Johnson showed great feet and deft outside of the boot finish from close range. Daniel Sturridge again did well in the build up, supplying Johnson with a clever back heel.

Player registration and competition eligibility[edit]
Starting in the 2010-11 season there will be new player registration requirements that must be met by every club playing in the English Premier League. Clicking on any of the topics listed below will access a brief overview of that topic. Overviews of the existing UEFA player registration regulations are also provided for the sake of comparison and because they also help provide a more thorough understanding of the actual implications for the Manchester City football club of both these sets of player eligibility requirements.

Every team competing in the Premier League will only be able to field a senior player in league matches that does not meet the Youth Player provision [1] if he has been appropriately registered with the Premier League before the end of the summer transfer window. Each Premier League team can register no more than 25 such players, although less than that number may be registered by a club if it so chooses. A squad of senior players that minimally covers the team sheet selection (which normally identifies 18 players, but it can be less, and it does not have to include only senior players) for the first match of the season on 14 August 2010 must have been registered with the Premier League by that date. However, subsequent additions and deletions can be made to this registered nucleus squad right up until the day after the closing of the summer transfer window on the last day of August, at which point the squad of registered senior players becomes frozen until the January transfer window opens.
Each Premier League team must re-register its 25-man squad with the Premier League at the end of the January transfer window for the remainder of the season. This permits adjustments to be made to the original registered squad as a result of player transfers and loans transacted during that window. A maximum of three changes can be made to the squad that was originally registered at the end of August when that squad is re-registered at the end of January. The term "registration" is somewhat of a misnomer for this process because even before these new regulations were introduced for this season every player belonging to a Premier League club had to be registered with the Premier League before he could legitimately participate in a Premier League game. The actual process of registering a squad of players with the Premier League that commences this season requires only that the club submits a list of up to 25 already validly registered player names by each of the required squad registration deadlines, after which cutoff date the squad is then frozen for the remaining duration of that registration period. Thus a senior player must be both (1) already registered with the Premier League AND (2) have his name validly submitted on his owning club's squad list by the appropriate deadlines in order to be eligible to play in Premier League matches in the corresponding registration period. It is only condition (2) that has been added starting this season with respect to senior players. In the case of junior players that satisfy the Youth Player provision, they are still only required to satisfy condition (1) as in all previous Premier League seasons in order to be similarly eligible to play in Premier League matches in the corresponding registration period. |

Within every Premier League team's (up to) 25-man registered squad, eight slots must be reserved only for players that meet the Homegrown Player provision (see below). If a Premier League team chooses (or is unable) to register the maximum eight players permitted for these slots then any unused Homegrown Player slots will be forfeited. A Premier League team may register more than eight players that meet the Homegrown Player provision up to a limit of the full 25-man maximum for the squad.
A Premier League team may also register in a similar manner any number of players (up to a maximum of 17) that do not meet any of the youth or homegrown provisions. However, if the number of Homegrown Players registered exceeds the eight slots allocated to them, the total number of other senior players that can be registered will be reduced accordingly, so that the overall maximum of 25 senior players in the registered squad is not exceeded. (1) Homegrown Player Provision: A "homegrown player" is defined as one who, irrespective of his nationality or age, has been registered with any club affiliated to either of the English or Welsh Football Associations for a period, continuous or not, of three entire seasons or 36 months prior to his 21st birthday (or the end of the season during which he turns 21) [1]. (2) Youth Player Provision: For a young player to meet this provision he must be younger than 21 years of age, OR have turned 21 years of age ON or AFTER January 1 of the year in which the season starts, on the first day of the season. Thus many qualifying players will already be 21 years of age come the start of the season in question [1]. |

The new Premier League player registration regulations parallel the existing UEFA player registration regulations currently in place and enforced for club participation in the Champions League [2], Europa League [3] and Super Cup [4] competitions organized by UEFA, but with the following two major differences:
(1) The UEFA player eligibility requirements for Locally Trained Players are a little stiffer than the new ones stipulated by the Premier League for Homegrown Players. Under the UEFA player eligibility rules, four out of the eight slots reserved for Locally Trained Players can only be filled by players that have qualified for that status via the club's own academy, and which UEFA terms Club-trained Players [2] [3] [4]. (2) The UEFA player eligibility requirements for Youth Players are also somewhat more stringent, requiring that a young player have spent at least two uninterrupted years registered and eligible to play with a club since his 15th birthday before he is then eligible to be registered and fielded as a Youth Player in any UEFA competitive match. The comparable Premier League requirement does not stipulate any such prior tenure, and a young player signing with a new club who satisfies the age limit requirement will immediately satisfy the Premier League's Youth Player provision [2] [3] [4]. |
Squad status designation[edit]
Based on the UEFA and Premier League squad registration regulations described above each player that is currently a member of the Manchester City first team squad can be assigned a "Squad Status" attribute that designates his ability to satisfy those player registration requirements in any UEFA or Premier League competition in which Roberto Mancini may wish to select him to play. Such a Squad Status designation may only be one of the following:

| Squad Status |
The most lenient squad status designation (from the player's perspective) is "UNDER 21" because these players satisfy the Youth Player provision stipulated in the new Premier League player registration regulations [1]. Prior to the introduction of the new SQUAD LIST for season 2010-11, a club could not field a player in any Premier League match unless that player's registration with the Premier League was in effect. A club was only deemed to hold the registration of a player upon receipt of the Premier League Secretary’s certificate in writing to that effect. Such a notification for a player could take effect as late as one hour before kick-off of the match in question. In this regard, nothing changes at all with respect to the registration of young players that satisfy the new Premier League Youth Player provision. An unlimited number of these players are eligible to play in any Premier League match without any requirement for their prior inclusion on the newly introduced SQUAD LIST that must be submitted to the Premier League at the end of each transfer window. |

The next (less lenient) squad status designation is "YOUTH" because these players satisfy the Youth Player provision stipulated in the existing UEFA player registration regulations [2] [3] [4] IN ADDITION TO the Youth Player provision stipulated in the new Premier League player registration regulations [1]. Thus a "YOUTH" designated player is eligible to play in any Premier League match without any requirement for his prior inclusion on the SQUAD LIST (as defined for "UNDER 21" players above), as well as being eligible to play in any UEFA competition match without any requirement for prior LIST A registration with UEFA in order to do so.
These players do still have to be registered with either/both those governing bodies in order to be eligible to play, however eligibility to play in Premier League matches is achieved via the same extant registration process described for "UNDER 21" players above, while eligibility to play in UEFA competition matches is achieved via LIST B registration rather than LIST A registration. UEFA LIST B registration has no limit on the number of young players that can be registered in this manner, and a "YOUTH" designated player can be registered to play in any UEFA organized match via a LIST B submittal made no later than 24.00 CET on the day before any match in which the player is to play. The "YOUTH" squad status designation is considered to be more stringent than the "UNDER 21" squad status designation for young players because "YOUTH" status players have to have been registered with (and eligible to play for) their current club for a minimum of two uninterrupted years after attaining the age of 15 before they are eligible to be registered via LIST B in order to play in any UEFA competition, while "UNDER 21" status players have no such tenure requirement levied on them, and so they are eligible to be registered to play in any Premier League match as soon as they join their current club. Note that if a youth player is on loan to another club he is NOT eligible to play for his parent club during the period of that loan spell, so although his registration with his parent club will remain uninterrupted while he is out on loan, his eligibility to play for the club will not. Consequently, any young player who has been designated with a "YOUTH" status is always eligible for any matches that a young player who has been designated with an "UNDER 21" status is eligible for, but NOT vice versa. Therefore, an "UNDER 21" status designation always subsumes a "YOUTH" status designation. |

The next (more stringent) squad status designation is "HOMEGROWN" because these players satisfy both the Association-trained Player provision stipulated in the existing UEFA player registration regulations [2] [3] [4] AND the Homegrown Player provision stipulated in the new Premier League player registration regulations [1]. The actual terminology used by UEFA for such players is a "locally trained player" that is also an "association-trained player" - which, since it is a bit of a mouthful, is why the Premier League terminology is being favored here.
The senior players designated with this status are currently the only players whose names can be validly entered in slots 18 through 25 of the SQUAD LIST in order to attain eligibility to play in Premier League game fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period. Only senior squad players that satisfy the new Premier League Homegrown Player provision can be registerd to play via one of these eight slots, and if a Premier League club does not have eight such players registered on its own books that meet this requirement, it must forfeit a possible player registration for each player that it falls short of that number (i.e., for each of the eight SQUAD LIST slots that it has to leave blank). If one of these eight slots is used to incorrectly register a player that does not meet the Premier League Homegrown Player provision then that slot will be forfeited for registration use by any other player in that registration period AND the invalidly registered player will not be eligible to play in any Premier League matches covered by that registration period, even if he was subsequently re-registered via a vacant slot in one of the other 17 slots on the SQUAD LIST form. Similarly, these same senior squad players are currently the only players whose names can be validly entered in one of four slots on the LIST A form that permit the registration of players satisfying the UEFA "association-trained player" provision to attain eligibility to participate in the pertinent UEFA competition game fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period. Only senior squad players that satisfy the existing UEFA Association-trained Player provision may be registerd to play via one of these four slots, and if a club does not have four such players registered on its own books that meet this requirement, it must forfeit a possible player registration for each player that it falls short of that number (i.e., for each of the four LIST A slots that it has to leave blank). If one of these four slots is used to incorrectly register a player that does not meet the UEFA Association-trained Player provision then that slot will be forfeited for registration use by any other player in that registration period AND the invalidly registered player will not be eligible to play in any UEFA competition matches covered by that registration period, even if he was subsequently re-registered via a vacant slot in one of the 17 "free player" slots on the LIST A form. Note that not only can the names of these senior "homegrown players" be validly included in one of those four/eight specifically designated slots on the respective SQUAD LIST and LIST A forms in order to attain eligibility to play in the corresponding Premier League or pertinent UEFA competition matches, but they can also be validly included in any of the other 17 slots on those forms in order to attain that same eligibility to play. |

The senior players designated with this status are currently the only players whose names can be validly entered in one of four slots on the LIST A form that permit the registration of players satisfying the UEFA Club-trained Player provision to attain eligibility to participate in the pertinent UEFA competition game fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period. Only senior squad players that satisfy the existing UEFA Club-trained Player provision may be registered to play via one of these four slots, and if a club does not have four such players registered on its own books that meet this requirement, it must forfeit a possible player registration for each player that it falls short of that number (i.e., for each of the four LIST A slots that it has to leave blank). If one of these four slots is used to incorrectly register a player that does not meet the UEFA Club-trained Player provision then that slot will be forfeited for registration use by any other player in that registration period AND the invalidly registered player will not be eligible to play in any UEFA competition matches covered by that registration period, even if he was subsequently re-registered via a vacant slot in one of the other 21 slots on the LIST A form. Note that not only can the names of these senior "club-trained players" be validly included in one of those four designated slots on the LIST A form in order to attain eligibility to play in the corresponding UEFA competition matches, but they can also be validly included in any of the other 21 slots on those forms in order to attain that same eligibility to play. Since there are currently no comparable Club-trained Player requirements stipulated for clubs participating in the Premier League competition, players designated with an "ACADEMY GRADUATE" squad status should be regarded as being exactly the same as players designated with a "HOMEGROWN" squad status (see above) for the purposes of satisfying the player registration requirements stipulated for squads submitted to the Premier League via the SQUAD LIST. Consequently, a "HOMEGROWN" squad status designation always subsumes an "ACADEMY GRADUATE" squad status designation - viz. all "ACADEMY GRADUATE" status players are also "HOMEGROWN" status players, but NOT vice versa. |

The fifth (and most restrictive) squad status designation is "FOREIGN" (which is really just a more convenient term for "Not Homegrown", while the corresponding UEFA term is "Free Player") because these players do not satisfy any of the youth nor homegrown player provisions of either UEFA or the Premier League. Consequently, it is currently only possible for these players to be registered for eligibility to play in the pertinent UEFA competition games and/or the Premier League match fixtures scheduled to occur in that registration period via assignment to one of the remaining 17 slots (slots 1 through 17) on the respective LIST A and SQUAD LIST forms. Although there are a lot more of these slots on the LIST A and SQUAD LIST forms relative to the other designated slots, this is considered to be the most restrictive squad status from a player's perspective because those players designated with a "FOR" status can ONLY be registered to play via those slots, while the senior players with other designated status (viz. "HGP" or "ACG") are also able to be registered to play via these 17 slots in addition to the slots that apply only to themselves due to their different levels of local training.
Note that young players that satisfy the Premier League Youth Player provision yet fail to meet the more stringent conditions of the comparable UEFA Youth Player provision (viz. players having "U21" rather than "YTH" squad status), CANNOT be LIST B registered for any of the UEFA competitions. The Squad Status and Player Eligibility codes defined below have been derived from information contained in the UEFA and Premier League rules and regulations (R&R) publications for the 2010-11 season as published on the official web sites of those respective football governing organizations.
