High school articles[edit]
Hi there. Be sure to check out the Schools Wikiproject as you edit high school articles, especially one which you appear to have a close connection to. The projects have general guidelines in terms of appropriate content and layout for consistency in similar articles.
First, individual state championships and records aren't considered notable enough to include in school articles. An individual state champion might be included in the article, however, if that person is notable on their own (in which case they'd be in the Notable alumni section). Consensus has typically favored including only team state athletic championships and occasionally runner-ups. The point of school articles is to give readers a general idea about the school, not as a place to list every accomplishment by students who happen to go to school there. The school is more than welcome to list that on their own website.
As for the specific location, I am fully aware that Woodridge High School has a Peninsula mailing address and is referred as "Peninsula Woodridge" by the Associated Press. However, the high school is not physically located in the village boundaries of Peninsula and is actually in the city of Cuyahoga Falls, a classic case of ZIP code and city boundaries not matching (a result of Cuyahoga Falls merging with Northampton Township in the 1980s). Because there are articles for both Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio and Peninsula, Ohio, we can be more accurate in the description. Peninsula is mentioned as being part of the school district and remains in the school's physical address on the infobox. --JonRidinger (talk) 20:25, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
It's been on the page since page creation, and I see no reason why it should be removed now. They are notable achievements. One in particular, was a team who set the state record, for Division II and all divisions, and is worth recognizing. These athletes are already in our hall of fame. If re-worded to "Hall of Fame" and noted in that way, would that meet your standards? This listing is a considerably shorter list than the hall of famers. --Mariscmoore (talk) 20:37, 8 October 2015 (UTC)
- They aren't my standards, they're Wikipedia's standards. Info being on a page "since it was created" isn't a valid reason for it to stay there. It has to adhere to Wikipedia's standards of notability and the WP:SCOPE of the article, along with established consensus for similar articles, which is to only include team state championships (with debate about including team runner-ups...I support including runner-ups in most cases). No one is questioning the accomplishments of those athletes, but that doesn't mean it should be included in an article about the school. A suggestion is to use your sandbox (link at the top of the page next to your user name) and store the info there or even create a new sub page for your user name such as User:Mariascmoore/Woodridge. Articles like the Woodridge article often have inappropriate info simply because they have very few page views and even fewer interested editors who know the Wikipedia guidelines and take the time to edit a page. In fact, most high school articles suffer from that. The Woodridge HS article could benefit from more properly sourced info about other aspects of the school (academics, arts, demographics, campus...) and appropriate (and properly licensed) images. - Also, as I have linked before, Wikipedia has standards for notability. Holding a state record is certainly an outstanding accomplishment, but that does not mean it's notable. Being in a local hall of fame is also not a measure of notability. A better course would be to get some written prose for the athletics section so that some of these accomplishments can be summarized and mentioned as part of the overall athletic program.
